As the boy approached her, she thought he was coming to mock her, mock her for being so soft; she back off. But then she saw that he was holding the things which had fallen from her bag. Then the girl who was holding her letter came too. She too had somethings in her hand. Thanks... I didn't mean to create a scene. I'm sorry. It's just that my hamster didn't make it.

Saying that out loud made her feel better. Way better. She took the letter from the girl's hands. I'm Laverne, Laverne Taylor. What are your names? Ohh and you, she said pointing to the boy I don't know your name but no, it's not hard walking up the stairs if you're used to walk in heels.

I'm Gryffindor and I'm a first year. What about you? Should she have said that? Maybe she's talking too much about herself. What is happening, why is she overthinking so much. What she over? Was she wearing too much? Why had he asked her about the heels? Was it too much pink? STOP... stop overthinking Laverne, she thought. So why are you all here? Did your parents write to you or were you writing to your parents? Ok chill Laverne and let them answer now. Let them talk about themselves.

Corrine started collecting the wandering things too, returning them to the girl. It was nice of her. Nice of them. The only thing that wasn't nice was that the things were among the owls' poop. Paul had to pay extra attention not to pick it instead of her belongings.

"Uhm... there. Hope we haven't missed something." He handed what he thought to be the last item there was on the floor, looking around under their feet, scanning the floor.

He hadn't really noticed that Laverne took a step away, until he looked back up and found out he was farther away than he'd thought he was. He raised an eyebrow but remained stood where he was standing, not wanting to make her feel any more upset.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Paul." He introduced himself briefly, not adding his house, for he was still wearing his robe, even though it was the afternoon, out of which it was clear which house he's a part of.

Taking a look at Corrine, gracing her with a supportive smile and a thumbs up. His eyes then flicked towards Laverne as she mentioned her hamster. Paul frowned. "Oh. That's harsh... I'm sorry. How old was he?"

He went silent for a moment, lifting his hand to pet an owl who seemed to be watching him, sitting on his right.

"Uh... none. I should probably write to my parents though." Shrugged the boy to Laverne's question about why they came.

To the topic of the heels, he didn't have anything to add, besides perhaps, wondering how long she's walking on shoes so high. "Right. Well, I've seen mum in similar shoes once or twice. She's never been good at walking on them. Maybe, you could teach her."

Well that escalated quickly. Thought Riley. Also, the boy could speak. Proving this, he said "I'm Paul from Gryffidor. First year too. Nice to meet ya both." Riley gave a small smile. When Corrine had asked him if he was okay he responded with "Oh, it's just..." He looked troubled, and not in the good way. "I should write to my parents, but I hate writing.” He said quickly. Paul looked around a moment, and looked wonderfully at an owl. "What a strange way to deliver letters." Paul said in an almost whisper. "Wonder if there's some... special training they have to do, to become so reliable." He looked embarrassed at that statement, so he did something Riley wasn’t prepared for and shifted the attention to her. "Are you alright? Riley was a bit startled at this comment and put on a fake smile while she dropped her arms. ”Oh, uh, you know just-“ Nervous ”Cold.” She added quickly. And just as she said, another student walked in.

She was surprised that the group went from only two girls to four students. I mean, was today national owl day or something? The girl was wearing lots of pink and quite literally resembled a doll. It felt like all of the group’s attention shifted to her, and it seemed that she was reading the post she had received. Paul was the first to speak to the newcomer. "Whoa... nice shoes!" He said quickly. "Wasn't it hard to get all the way up here, up the thin staircase? If I were you, I'd be afraid I'd trip, fall down and die, probs, on those... huge heels." Hm. He either has no filter, or he’s terrible at small talk. Thought Riley. The girl in pink looked sort of frantic after reading the post, and Riley could see tears welling up in her eyes.

"Has something-" Almost at once, a string of unexpected and unfortunate events spiraled through. With a big gust of wind, both her letter and handbag flew away. With her handbag hitting the floor and her letter flying out the window. Now you see, Riley has mediocre reflexes when she has no reason to react. But when someone-er-something was in danger, she wasn’t playing around. She ran to the window and caught the letter. Corrine grabbed the bag quickly, but froze. Riley wasn’t sure why but the girl in pink and Corrine had locked eyes and were seemingly communicating through telekinesis. Or not. "Uhm... there. Hope we haven't missed something." Riley held up the letter. ”Here’s your letter?” Riley said.

“Thanks... I didn't mean to create a scene. I'm sorry. It's just that my hamster didn't make it.” Riley put a hand to her mouth.”Im so sorry- That’s… sad.” It may not have been the most sentimental reaction, but it was what she could think of. "Oh. That's harsh... I'm sorry. How old was he?" Paul added. “I'm Laverne, Laverne Taylor. What are your names? Ohh and you” She said, turning to Paul. “I don't know your name but no, it's not hard walking up the stairs if you're used to walk in heels. I'm Gryffindor and I'm a first year. What about you?” "Nice to meet you. I'm Paul." He also added a comment, most likely related to the question he had asked earlier about her large heels.

"Right. Well, I've seen mum in similar shoes once or twice. She's never been good at walking on them. Maybe, you could teach her." Riley smiled and spoke after Paul. ”Im Riley. And I’m a first year in Ravenclaw.” She said steadily. Her nerves seemed to be calming down. But before anyone else could speak, she added something else. “So why are you all here? Did your parents write to you or were you writing to your parents?” Riley spoke first again. ”Well, I just received an owl from my mum.” Riley stated, them looked to Paul and Corrine. ”What about you guys?” Paul spoke after. "Uh... none. I should probably write to my parents though."

Awkwardly, Corrine just stood off to the side. She doesn’t really know what to say; this group seemed to click better together without her in it. Nevertheless, she mumbles an introduction, barely heard over the sounds of the Owlery.

“I’m Corrine Aelina. I’m a first year student too.” She mumbles, glancing off to the side. “And.. I’m in Ravenclaw. Like Riley.”

Although this is the first time we’ve met, Corrine thinks to herself. A part of her could already feel herself wavering, wondering if she should’ve gone to the Owlery today of all days if it was this busy. She had just wanted to send a letter to her parents and to her grandparents, so that they know she’s currently doing well.

The plan had initially been to update them sooner on how her life is going, but classes kept her busy; the influx of homework featuring completely new material to learn—magical material, no less—kept her nose buried in books. Pairing that with the fact she surprisingly has friends keeping her company now, she hasn’t had much time to sit down and just write out what to say.

Nevertheless, Corrine knew that her family wouldn’t take offence. In fact, once they hear that Corrine’s actually doing well (and finally having friends), she’ll be willing to bet a pretty galleon or two that they’ll be overjoyed she’s coming out of her shell somewhat.

”Cold.” Suggested Riley nervously, and Paul nodded. "Uhm... then," Paul did several squats right on the spot. It wasn't unusual for him to do exercises out of a sudden, let alone when he had an actual reason to do them, he was unstoppable. "You can do squats with me to warm up!"

Several more, before he stopped and stood straight again. His cheeks were red from the sudden physical activity, as well as from the cool wind that was blowing throughout the Owlery. "Or... uh.. I could lend you my sweatshirt?" He unzipped his black, fleece sweatshirt with the logo of his football team - the Edinburgh Earthquakes. "It's no problem, you can have it. I have two or three more in my trunk. Besides, I wanted to head back down soon anyway so I won't need it." Offered the boy to Riley.

He watched as the letter found its way back to Laverne and listened to Riley introducing herself. He went silent, rubbing the owl's head. He wondered how it came to the wizards' minds to employ owls instead of pigeons. It was obvious that owls had the reputation of being smart, so perhaps, they wanted to look smarter than Muggles?

"Hey... Corrine." He lowered his voice, as he looked at the Ravenclaw who asked him earlier, what was wrong. He didn't want anyone else to get to know, as the matter was private. "You asked me before, what was wrong. It's letters related, I... I suck at writing. All letters look the same to me, I sometimes skip some or swap them for something else." He explained quietly. "I just... I want to write to my parents, but I want the letter to be really, really nicely written. Can... could you help me? Not write it, just check it after me? If there are mistakes in spelling or... something?"

Corrine snaps out of her thoughts, dazed. She hadn’t immediately realized somebody had talked to her, so it took a few beats before she had processed Paul’s words. “Hey.. Corrine.”

She looks over curiously. I thought he’d be paying more attention to their conversation.. I was just going to slowly leave out of awkwardness, she thinks to herself, slightly embarrassed.

“You asked me before, what was wrong. It’s letters related. I.. I suck at writing. All letters look the same to me, I sometimes skip or swap them for something else.” His voice is hushed, as if he’s speaking of a secret he sincerely wants to keep just between the two of them. “I just.. I want to write to my parents, but I want the letter to be really, really nicely written. Can you help me?”

After a moment, he adds, “Not to write it, just to check it after me. If there are mistakes in spelling.. or something?” Despite his question, Paul looks unsure. Maybe he didn’t know if Corrine would think of it as burdensome, or if she’d deny him.

But Corrine?

Corrine could feel her heart melt, causing her gaze to soften. Although she’s met her fair share of nice people since her journey in Hogwarts started, something about Paul just really warms her heart.

The girl smiles, her eyes crinkling. “Of course. You can ask me for help anytime, I’ll gladly help.”

Knowing that she could help makes her happy, and helping Paul is no different.

Paul was embarrassed about the disaster his writing usually was. It was not a matter he'd be happy to discuss with people on random occassions like this one. But, Corrine asked him what was wrong. She also seemed to be a nice person who wouldn't just walk around, talking about his problems to other people.

So he asked her for help, and it worked.

A huge smile resided on his face, after he exhaled in relief. "Whew! I-I..." He breathed in to tell her how afraid he was that she'd say no. That he was insecure she wouldn't laugh at him or mock him. Which she still could but... she didn't seem to be the kind of a person.

"Thank you so much. You're great!" Said Paul, hesitating a little, before he hugged her shortly, out of all the happiness he felt. The owls nearby all felt startled by his quick motion, hooting. But he didn't really care. If you asked him later on, he'd even tell you he didn't notice, out of how full of emotion he was.

He released her in a few seconds. "I'll bring the letter to you as soon as I write it. Tomorrow, probably, or the day after." Did he say. "And I'll bring my grandma's cookies. You'll love them... everyone does."

Paul turned to the door, jerking his head towards it. "Alright, I might go back now. To have a a snack before dinner, and such." Grinned the boy.

When Corrine had agreed to helping the boy, she didn’t think he’d look so.. overjoyed. Instead of the uncertainty that was previously on his face, she could see his smile split into the widest grin possible. Simply said, in that very moment alone, the boy looked like the personal embodiment of the sun in human form.

Clearly though, she underestimated how happy he was, because before she could even fully process, Paul’s arms had tightly wrapped around her in a great, big hug. Warmth surrounded her from all sides and it didn’t hurt but one bit, but she couldn’t help but freeze anyway.

She’s unused to this. Physical affection, that is. Though her grandparents have been affectionate their whole life, she didn’t really have friends that would dish out physical affection so easily before. Paul came around. I don’t know what to do, Corrine awkwardly thinks to herself. I think he’s just trying to show his thanks, so it’s probably fine if I just—

Like a baby who didn’t know what to do, the girl unsurely wraps her arms around Paul to give him a warm hug back. Although her posture is stiff, she does eventually relax into it, finding her cheeks flushing at the realization that maybe she likes hugs more when it’s from her friends.

“Thank you so much! You’re great!” Paul cheers. Around them, the owls flapped, caught off-guard by his joyful shout. At his compliment, Corrine flushes, averting her eyes. “Not really.. I’m just glad to help.”

The hug felt so nice that when Paul pulls away shortly after, Corrine feels a small wave of disappointment wash over her, but she pays it no mind. “I’ll bring the letter to you as soon as I write it. Tomorrow, probably, or the day after.” Paul says with a grin.

Corrine nods, returning his grin with a soft smile. “Okay. I’m usually in the library when I’m not in class, so.. you can find me there, if ever.”

However, when he adds that he was bringing his grandma’s cookies, she giggles. “Well, in that case, maybe not the library. I don’t think we’re allowed to eat there.”

Seeing that Paul is about to leave, Corrine nods, turning to the other two. “..I’ll get going too. I wanted to continue reading my book about giants.” She mumbles, flashing them a smile. “It’s nice to meet you two.. I hope we see each other again.”

Paul was never a person to think much about what he was doing in advance. One of the examples was the hug he gave to Corrine, based on the swirl of emotion he was feeling at that moment.

He liked it, of course. Naturally. Who wouldn't like to hug a nice-smelling girl who promised to help him, moreover. So, considering all the facts, he also did enjoy the hug, although it was short.

"See you, Cor!" Did he say, waving at the girl, adding a conspiratorial wink.

As Corrine said her goodbye to Riley and Laverne, he got ready to do it too. However, before he managed to give his farewell once and for all, he remembered he wanted to give his black, football sweatshirt he was wearing under the robe to Riley who seemed to be cold, unlike him. So he took it off and stretched his hand with the piece of clothing to the Ravenclaw.

"There... take it. I'll survive without it." Uttered the boy again, smiling at Riley with a crooked smile and adding a wink as a cherry on the top. Waiting for her to either accept of decline.

After that, he said his goodbyes to the remaining two girls. "Alright, guys. See you both around! Take care!"

With that, he exited the tower, running down the stairs, taking two stairs per step.

It all went so fast. She was glad they weren't looking at her like she was that one fragile artefact, which too breaks easily. The boy said "Nice to meet you. I'm Paul." Well that made it easy to call him, instead of pointing at him like a freak. Hi Paul. I didn't notice your robes. You're Gryffindor like me too. Cool... The other girl came and said ”I'm Riley. And I’m a first year in Ravenclaw.” Hey Riley. “I’m Corrine Aelina. I’m a first year student too.” Said the second girl. “And.. I’m in Ravenclaw. Like Riley.” Hey Riley. Hey Corrine. "Oh. That's harsh... I'm sorry. How old was he?" Paul asked. I wondered why they were so concerned. Did they think I was a cry baby? They must have seen me as a shy girl... That's why they were concerned.

Ohh, he was one and a half years old. That's how long they usually live. But don't let it concern you guys. I stood straight. "Right. Well, I've seen mum in similar shoes once or twice. She's never been good at walking on them. Maybe, you could teach her." Paul said, laughing. Haha Paul then started talking to Riley. She looked like she was cold. "Uhm... then," Paul did several squats right on the spot. "You can do squats with me to warm up!" Laverne laughed. Paul looks like he's the funny kind. "Or... Why was she staring blank at their conversation?

Then Paul and Corrine started talking to each other. Looks like Paul had some problem with writing letters. Time after that went fast. Corrine left, saying bye to everyone. So did Paul. Soon, only Riley and Laverne were in the owlery. So Riley, do you know anything about Quidditch and whether first years can play or not? she asked, trying to break the silence.
