AI Use and You
I have my own personal grudges with AI-generated art, but its applications on H.io are mostly harmless. There are enough members that use it consistently and mindfully, and so long as there is a standard of transparency in terms of exchanges and uses, I personally see no direct reason to ban or harshly regulate it.

AI Use and You
Hello, everyone! I was originally intending to be a passive reader of the discourse in this thread, but after seeing the earnest discussion happening, I was inspired to share my own opinion on the matter :D

Personal opinion:
Reducio
To preface, the AI-generated content that I will be focusing on is mainly content from text-generating AI software that generates, changes, and/or supplements content (eg, paragraph outlines that are translated and generated into full sentences from one language to another), not so much software that uses AI to point out writing errors and solely used to translate fully written works.

To start, I want to say that while accessibility is a concern that I am sympathetic towards, I don't believe that AI has a place in creative spaces, whether it be for recreation or work. As someone who does not speak English as their first language and struggled with developing a good grasp on English writing, AI is often marketed to people such as myself as a tool that connects us to the most spoken language in the world, and as something that can supposedly erase my inadequacies and present my ideas in the language in ways I can only dream of. However, it is exactly because of my experience with learning English creative writing that I cannot accept the replacement of human work and effort by AI-generated works, especially for a site like Hogwarts.io.

In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that the growing popularity of generative AI has led to the devaluation of human labor and creativity. The appeal of AI is undeniable due to its convenience, speed, and the vast array of information at its fingertips. Anyone with Internet access can now access some form of AI generation software, and companies find ways to actively tempt us with the attractive prospect that perfection and our "impossible" can be achieved with no labour. However, therein lies the flaw in that line of logic: How can something be created from nothing? If not your own labour, then it must be someone else's. Companies feed AI generation software with lifetimes of human labour, hard-earned skills, and unique, creative voices to fulfill requests typed within minutes, reducing whole generations' of personal voices and creative works to the whims of someone who wanted gratification for none of the effort it takes to achieve it.

When I first joined this site in 2020, it was a time when I was young and not at all confident in my writing. AI-generated content was practically unheard of, and without any clue on how to write RP posts, I had to personally find methods to improve myself so as to express my ideas with others. I, like many members, joined because I wanted the happiness of interacting with like-minded individuals, forming connections with my own words and ideas, to bring ideas that only genuine conversations can create to life, so I went to learn. There were countless talented writers on the site whose works I would read for inspiration, and as I studied their flow and styles of writing to develop my own style of writing, I admired the effort that they put into creating such thoughtful works for RP partners and strangers such as myself to enjoy. Some of them had flaws scattered about, but the sincerity was what shone through. Even now, in this age where AI-generated content and "slop" are ubiquitous, countless members are still determined to preserve this precious exchange of authentic, creative works. In recognition of that effort, isn't it only right that we reciprocate with equal measure of dedication and sincerity? To use AI to generate responses to threads, or to generate homework answers for lessons, does it not mean that you are actively funneling the fruits of someone's labour into a software that does not care a single bit about the recipient of your response, in order to obtain something that is a disrespectful mishmash of equally stolen work from others?

Rather than treating this issue as solely a matter of accessibility and recreation, I think we should also evaluate this issue and its impact as a matter of respect. In joining this community of writers that is built on the foundation of passion for this fandom and the creativity of our members, do we hold enough respect for not only our RP partners and the readers who want to appreciate our unique, creative voices, but for the hard-working staff who want to protect our collective love for creative writing and genuine interaction, to not forsake this community's creative integrity for the sake of convenience? Many of us are not focused on instant gratification, and we do not discriminate against others who have imperfect writing or busier schedules, so we should not immediately jump to protect this rapid convenience of AI-generated works so passionately. Rather than convenience, what we should be safeguarding and enhancing is the inclusive, safe environment and community that encourages and allows writers of all backgrounds and ability levels to grow and learn without shame.

To end off, I do not condemn or scorn anyone who actively uses and advances AI-generation software, because it is also a tool and product of the labour of professionals in that field. I understand the need for translation and writing assistant software, even those that use AI. It is an advancement in mass communication, and I respect how it has enabled exchanges between people of different backgrounds and tongues. However, I am still unable to accept AI-generated content as something "created", and I do not wish for it to become a cornerstone of creative forms such as writing, regardless of the intention and brainstorming behind the prompt, especially for this site.

A loose thought in relation to the major inquiries
Reducio
On the issue of accountability, I personally believe that there is no question of who accountability should be placed on if AI-generated content infringes on site rules or is site-lore-uncompliant. Oftentimes, the AI software merely fulfills the requests of the person who entered the prompt, and it usually does not have the true capacity to consider the nuances of the site rules and site lore in relation to the text it generates. It is already quite problematic to generate texts for a creative site, but being unable to do the bare minimum of vetting the generated content for its compliance with site rules and lore setting is simply inconsiderate and shows an utter lack of effort.

Lost time is never found again, but in its shadows lies my path to freedom. (2020-2026)

I am firmly against generative AI, I hate how it takes stuff away from creativity. I value it so much, and cherish it close. AI takes this away, I see AI generated images (it doesn't deserve to be called art) and feel sad. There is no soul put into it, just a prompt. 'Give me a generic kid with brown hair and glasses' I could draw that and I feel it would still look better then anything AI could make. I stand firmly that AI should stay away from any space where creativity is expected.

HiO is a writing site, writing. Something us as humans have been doing forever. Robots are not able to encompass a human touch. I cant spell well, and I know that and can admit it. I don't care. I think it adds something to what I write, weather you see it as a positive or a negative that is on you. Human error is a given in anything.

If I see someone that uses AI in posts, I am 100% hesitant to thread with them. I don't know how they 'make' there posts. And I don't want to know, if they put my writing and say 'give me a roleplay response to this' I don't feel comfortable with that. I don't want my writing willingly given to a bot to be analyzed and to be given something with no thought put into it. I likely wont thread with anyone again if I find they replied to something I wrote.

Writing and the community are what have kept me on site for so long, the threads that I have been in. That I have written, and have been replied to bring me joy. No, I don't like some of my early writing. But without that I never would have improved. When I first made a post, I was just testing the waters. And I got a reply, and that lead to plots that wouldn't have kept me on site.

I have plots in motion now with fantastic writers that I love writing with, every time I get a ping in a thread I get a jolt of excitement to see how they wrote. How they think there characters think of mine. Not some robot that cant think. Seeing how us as humans can create characters, worlds, and plots with others is what I come to HiO for. I hate AI, and I don't want it used in creative spaces. Yes, AI profile pictures to. I honestly would much rather have a toddlers drawing then and AI picture as my profile any day. And what you may consider the 'worst writing ever' then AI. A wall of text with no periods or commas then a robot.
If someone is ok with RPing with bots, or just AI replies to and fro that is your opinion, but I won't be participating at all.

(this is my personal opinion)
I just found out the picture I was using (not the one I currently have, another one I had for a few days) was ai, I didn't make it- but my cousin sent it to me and told me they made it themselves, I'm horrible at telling what's AI and what's not so I didn't think much of it and simply placed it there (I found out it was AI after watching a video about AI and I just decided to go back to my old picture) and after finding out it was AI, it kind of took away the happiness I felt when I thought my cousin did something for me by themselves- mostly because there's no thought put into AI, it simply generates whatever you tell it to and does it, I would rather have a stick figure as a profile picture than have a genetic AI picture on my profile because at least I took the time out of my day of making something that was actually mine and felt good to make.

When I entered this site, I had to use grammarly because my first language is NOT English, and my English was really bad when I first got here- I had enrolled myself into an English class but it started way later than I would have liked it to, and so I had to use grammarly to correct my grammar for the time being- but now that I am finally in my classes and slowly learning? I don't use it anymore, why? Because I enjoy being able to write things by myself and I find roleplaying to be really fun.

I don't really understand why people find using AI to roleplay fun, I can understand using something like grammarly for people like me who aren't native English speakers- but it's always meant to be just that, a tool and nothing else, because what's the point of joining a rp site If an AI is doing the roleplaying for you? It's like attending a playdate and simply handing your toys to someone else so they can play for you while you simply watch and tell them what to do.

Not only that, but AI always manages to make things sound generic, like something you'd hear over and over and over again on popular stories- but instead of being someone's original work, it's a computer mushing all of those things together and coming up with something that simply includes a character you told it to put in the story.

It feels lifeless- boring even, because everything that AI generates is completely predictable, and it takes away the fun of creating your own character, developing their story and actually putting effort into thinking about how they'd respond to different things.

Although I've talked to people who use AI, their response as to why they use it (at least on other rp sites I've been a part of in the past) is always almost the same? I've had people tell me that they use it because they're more interested in what the OTHER person is gonna write back, because they don't think their writing is "good enough" and that they find it fun to imagine their character in a good story with someone else (so they're pretty much just excited to see what the other person will say in response) and the other thing I've been told, is that they're tired and have no ideas left for writing, and that's honestly not something I can understand... because there's so many ways to get inspired, I've seen people get ideas from staring at a stain on a wall or at a weird shaped cloud, so there's always ways to get inspiration.

But anyways, idk...this is just my opinion, so correct me if I'm not actually seeing the bigger picture.

I'm going to separate my personal thoughts on AI and its ethics from my opinions on how it should (or shouldn't) be used here.

To absolutely no one's surprise, my thoughts align pretty well with Thea's.

Some backstory – I also joined the site back in 2018 and my writing was awful. Here are a few examples from the 2018-2019 school year:
Reducio
4 Dec 2018
This would be Koko’s seventh time playing the dreidel game. Of course, she’d only played it once a year in primary school, so she didn’t remember the rules at all and was pleased to have a review. Koko took a glance around her. No one had rolled the dreidel yet. At least, not in her group. She’d have to be the brave one. Putting the last gelt (which happened to be hers) in the pot, she then rubbed her fingers along the dreidel’s stem, as she thought of it. Gimel, she wished. Smiling wickedly, she spun the small toy with master speed and motivation. After all, the winner got chocolate.
22 Jan 2019
All she really wanted was a nice plate of brownies.

Chocolate was Koko’s comfort food. Especially brownies. Their lucious richness combining a texture like cake and a taste of chocolate was just what she needed to feel at home. Sadly, the only dessert that Koko would really want from the table was a few chocolate chip cookies. Not that they were bad or anything... but she really just wanted brownies.

While Koko had never been much of a foodie and had a thin frame, she had an overpowering sweet tooth. Taking a small bite of a cookie (which she had already piled multiple of on her platter), she gazed up at the sorting hat as it rattled off names and houses. It had started to get a tad boring to her, but all she could really do was sit and watch. Her fellow Slytherins really weren’t too socialable, were they?

She chuckled to herself and took another bite, savoring the little morsels of chocolate that came along with it. Koko wanted to introduce herself; she wanted attention, at least this time, but all the same she wasn’t sure how to gain it. Neither did she want to do that nor to be rude by interrupting the hat—was that even possible? To interrupt a hat? Victor would be surprised if she could do that...

”Hello,” Koko said loudly, her voice projecting over the area of the table that she sat at. Her voice sounded higher pitched than usual, and she could feel her pale cheeks reddening with the fact that her voice sounded odd. Her lashes fluttered as she glanced up at the ceiling, as she did when she was nervous. The spell on the ceiling, the one to make the stars appear, now that was artwork! ”My name is Koko Riddle. Um... I’m pureblooded, and, well, I like chocolate. How about any of you?” Koko said finally, lowering her voice a bit so that it didn’t seem to hop onto the F line of the treble clef.

So... yeah. Compare that with literally any more recent post of mine, aside from maybe the Cyrus-at-Tenūsa one. HUGE improvement. And it doesn't happen immediately, but when surrounded by others who like writing for the sake of writing here, growth does happen.

AI wasn't really a thing when I joined the site, so I didn't have that option. But I think that, even if I'd been able to use it, it wouldn't have actually helped me grow as a writer. That's not even to say I haven't used AI in the past, but I do think having it write posts/HW isn't really going to help anyone.

My thoughts? Humans do it better. There's more flavour, more spice, if you will. I find so much humour and creativity in human writing, even if it's not grammatically perfect or words are misspelled. The more you write, the more you learn, and the more you can do one of my favourite things: drop bits of your sense of humour into your posts. Writing is supposed to be fun! Have fun with your words, enjoy the process, all that jazz!

I know a lot of people RP for the collaborative aspect. IMO, that is better done when you're RPing with a human. If you're into bot RP, there's c.ai or ChatGPT or whatever else. But since I assume most of the writers behind the characters here are human, why not embrace that?

I wouldn't necessarily enjoy RPing with a bot, mostly because I think it would probably ignore a fair bit of what I posted previously, or our site's lore, which can knock one out of the site's immersive atmosphere. Not as fun. I also really love reading my RP partners' writing. I can often hear their voice shining through, and as is the case with Thea, I can also see how much they've grown over the years, which is really cool. I don't think it's really possible to have the same feeling with AI-generated posts. They often have the same sort of tone to them.

That's not to say you can't use it in different ways. Again, barring my personal opinions re the ethics of AI, I know some people have used it to translate their writing or to provide grammatical edits or even character feedback. For a collaborative RP forum, I think this is a fairer way to go about it. It preserves the integrity of collaborative RP while not alienating people who do struggle with English. (However, I'd suggest practising writing in English and then editing for grammar if you're writing in a second language, as that's generally more beneficial to you.)

Anyway, all that to say, my take is that you get more of writing things using your own words, be that personal growth, fun or even the simple satisfaction that, hey, you did that! And that is pretty neat. :)

Personal thoughts below because I think it's worth sharing:
As far as I'm aware, I have not threaded with anyone AI-generating replies. I would not like it if I did because it would mean that, without my consent, someone is feeding my work to LLM, and they would likely be trained on it.

Something I've worked really hard on for years has been curating different styles of writing, different voices, for all of my characters. It took me two years of planning to get Livia's voice right. While I personally doubt AI could actually do a decent job of copying it, I would be miffed if it managed to do it in however many seconds it takes to generate a response.

If you want to run your work through AI... sure, I guess. That's up to you. But you should not run someone else's work through anything without their consent. That applies to visual art, too.

I stopped using visual-generating tools a long time ago after learning that most come from artists' work being stolen. I don't want to contribute to that. A lot of my friends do, and I don't tell them what to do. I just won't do it myself.

Regarding text generation, I stopped using that after learning of the environmental effects, which has resulted in a staunch aversion to AI that even my tech-loving family have been trying to worm me out of. So far, no luck to them. AI words are not worth the impact on the environment. Some of the others who have posted in this thread have posted sources regarding this; I'd encourage you to do some reading and make up your own mind.

I do think that AI has potential (such as translators,) but I don't think it belongs on a creative forum such as this. I will also admit that I am incredibly heavily biased against AI due to having a lot of my own, personal works stolen by it.

Not being good at writing is certainly something I've seen and heard before from those who use AI. And to that, I have to say: Practice makes perfect. I have not been on this site so long that I have old posts to show, but I did start writing for fun what is now at least a decade ago. I wasn't even a teenager yet. I was a kid who just wanted to write fun little stories about my own characters in universes I liked. I was not good at it. That is the only way to put it.

I can look back at my old notebooks with a fondness as well as a hint of cringe. But I kept writing. It made me happy, and through the years, I got better. I developed my own style, my words, worlds, and characters improved every time I went back to them. I found the flaws, fixed them, learned from them, and was better for it.

My writing is in a place where I can say with certainty that I love it. I'm good at it and can feel proud of it. There are certainly times where I think I can still improve, but that is the nature of any skill.

AI does not have that same heart. There is not time or love put into the words it says. And even that could maybe be excused if it wasn't for the fact that gen AI runs off of the works of others.

All the time and effort I put into my stories, many of which I started posting online, was stolen from me. My words, of which I poured my heart and soul into, were dumped into some LLM so someone who didn't want to write could use my writing, and the writing of so many others who took the same time and effort as me, to get some AI slop for whatever reason. It still stings.

I once had a "friend" who put some of my art into some AI thing to try and make their own. At the time, I didn't think my ability to draw was good enough to get upset over. This was not even that long ago. I had joined this site when it happened. Looking back, it actually does upset me a lot. I had directly stated for my art to not be used in such a way. If someone ran any of the art I made for Pyce, for any of my characters, through an AI generator, I do not think I would want to interact with that person at all. My stances on AI images are slightly less harsh than my opinions towards it in writing, but again, I have only just started appreciating my own skill in drawing recently.

I have had the great fortune to only have someone use AI in a thread with me only once. I was not comfortable with it. The people in the thread with me weren't comfortable with it. There's something far more insulting about taking someone else's words and putting them into an LLM to get a half-baked response than most anything you can do.

Seeing actual responses from actual people, building up a story with someone else, using our words and time to make something wonderful? That makes me so happy in a way I don't think I can describe. Writing has been my favorite pastime for a long time, and it brings me joy when someone else writes with me. It's fun and different. A collaborative story is a beautiful thing and I don't AI could ever properly replace it.

Pyce's story was a collaborative effort from the start! Many aspects of their character are nods to the people who were there from nearly the very beginning. Slime the cat and Stella Drake both took inspiration from people who affected Pyce's creation. The fact that Pyce exists in the way they do today is largely due to certain irl friends of mine. The human connection is undeniable. And I don't want to lose it because someone else didn't want to put in the same effort and heart.

Thought I'd weigh in here as well. I agree with a lot of the points that have been made on a personal level as well as how I view H.io. The points about anything that can earn you Galleons, such as errands and homework, is extremely valid. As well as events. A lot of people work very hard to make these things happen, to check them and spend a lot of time on them so I think people who use AI to generate their answers or prompt ChatGPT or something similar simply to get a leg up should not be welcomed in these.

I also feel like I kind of understand the point that some people may not be here to actually creatively write their own stuff... And I kind of differ on how much this space should be for them. For me personally, I would not want to do threads with people who write their entire post with AI and I would frankly feel quite upset if someone didn't tell me and I found out later that I'd been working hard on developing stuff when they're just pasting it with a "respond to this post"-output from a genAI. However, I also agree with Meyra that some people might not mind and those people might also already be here and have made connections and IC or OOC friendships and relationships that they would want to somehow maintain.

So what would be my solution? Making a separate mandatory tag for these posts when it comes to RPs. If the tag is not on and it seems to be AI, follow the steps that are currently taken and in repeated cases ban someone. If someone decides to make these threads themselves (or participate in them fairly regularly/in % more than they do in non-AI threads), I would suggest - if at all possible - having something under their little bio on the left telling others that they use genAI to write threads and posts. This would also mean that as long as more than 50% of their posts in threads is within an AI-thread they can't make homework, do errands or participate in events, etc. If there is something underneath the profile card within each thread, this would be fairly quick to see and the individual posts could be deleted quite easily as well to avoid the thread getting filled with genAI-content. If someone regardless of this participates in either of the mentioned things 3 times or more I'd say that should be a bannable offense.
I would also suggest a new rule that if staff finds that the AI-topic is not according to the lore of the site, the steps to remove a thread should be shortened so it doesn't take up too much time for those who work hard to make this space enjoyable for all. Especially since the OG Thread was not created time extensively either.

That way those who - like me - don't wish to having a RP partner that uses genAI to come up with their ideas can avoid this person whereas others who either don't mind or are a fan themselves can also continue. And staff would also not be spending a lot of time doing laborious work on people who are just here for their own reasons and not to work on their writing...

Thanks for listening to my TED-talk, look forward to seeing other people's ideas and thoughts! Also feel free to owl (or DM) me if you wish to continue 1-on-1!

small edit: I would say that if someone uses more than 75% genAI to write their RPs, I would also say they should not go to this site but find some other site to interact as you don't want the site to become flooded with purely AI-bots interacting with one another rather than actual users

Alright, I'm going to be very honest here. I have been writing since I was about 8 years old, not on site, but actually writing, books, articles, etc. It's been 8 years, almost 9 since I began writing. AI is a new thing, and if you know me, I am against it, completely, in all forms. I do not appreciate the fact that AI is taking over art (writing, drawing, music, etc.). I hate it so much, and now this thing about AI taking over acting, which is actually one of my passions.

So, I just wanted to come over here and say that if you want to read AI work, and interact with it there are platforms on there that you can do that, and only that. Such as ChatGPT, C.ai, janitor.ai, etc. I just would not appreciate going on h.io, a site I came on to write and interact with fellow writers who put soul and effort into their work just like I do. I really don't mind the lack of experience, and I don't mind someone going to AI and asking for improvements and improving their work themselves. Or even using AI to translate their own work, just not asking AI to create a reply to a thread.

Also, AI takes about 2-5 seconds to generate a reply. I don't know about others, but for my work, it takes 45-1 hour and half to write my replies. I sit and think about it beforehand, and that also takes time. I like to have objectives for each thread that I write so thinking about that also takes time. As well as the fact that AI DOES NOT PROVIDE ORIGINAL IDEAS it simply repeats ideas in a different way.

So I believe that's my opinion on this for now, and I might get back to this later if I remember anything else.

From a personal moral and ethical standpoint, I am highly against generative AI in general with few exceptions. I am totally against using AI for creative outlet. As Sofia Isella wisely puts it, "They want the machines to be human and the humans to be machines." The purpose of AI should be to allow more time in our day for creativity, not to be creative in our stead.

Aside from the valid and numerous points about the soul of human art and the purpose of collaborative writing spaces, I would like to note another thing. I realize AI scrapes published media as well as sites like this (I have heard several times that even personal documents in programs like Google Docs are being scraped, though take this with a grain of salt as I have not been able to find evidence yet) to gather data in order to "learn creative writing." I do not consent to this, but it happens nonetheless. Some may remember during the 2025 summer, site got overrun with bots and Zach installed new security to prevent the theft of our posts, which I am very grateful for. Thus far, we've endeavored to save Hio's writing from the clutches of AI.

In allowing users to write RP with AI, we would be encouraging a population of the site to purposefully run our creations through LLMs so that LLMs can train off our data and generate a response. I definitely do not consent to that.
