It seemed so simple … and yet so easy. So easy for Devon to fly right through, past a bunch of students from Durmstrang or Uagadou. The entire time, nothing happened to her … including from a … wait, was that a fire-breathing chicken? It sounded so adorable! She eventually found herself next to a Durmstrang student … with a Uagadou student ahead of her. Her green eyes flicked behind her, vaguely aware that Cursa and Basil were nowhere nearby. It was up to her now, at least to give them a fighting chance. Hopefully.

Letting out a quiet sigh, Devon looked at the Durmstrang girl near her and gave a friendly smile and a wave. She wasn’t one to find these games competitive at all in the slightest. Flicking her eyes back ahead of her, Devon considered her options. Hopefully, whatever she decided to do would help …. or at least keep them in the running. Only time would tell.

Since she was a young girl, Devon was obsessed with her hair. She rarely wore it down to her shoulders. Instead, she liked having it styled differently. She chose even more intricate designs when she learned to do her hair. She enjoyed having the creativity of choosing a different hairstyle. Even now, at Ilvermorny, Devon tries out different hairstyles.

Devon was a dancer and enjoyed playing the violin. She had plenty of experience dressing up for dancing and playing at recitals. Compliments were given to her … and not just about her performance. “Devon is so pretty!” “Mom, can we ask Devon where she bought that dress from? It looks so lovely on her!” “Do you see the hairstyle Devon is using? It suits her!” It filled her with pride to know that people liked her and were willing to compliment her. Even more importantly, they were willing to compliment her on more than just her performance.

Devon took her time getting dressed and applying her makeup in the dressing room of her dance school and recitals. It took her so long that she’d have to arrive extra early. Yet, despite how long it took, she wanted to appear poised to perfection for her performances. As important as it was to entertain, she also needed to look good while doing so! Within the dressing room, she often helped the other girls with their hair and makeup, as well.

Once her ears were pierced, Devon became attached to wearing different types of earrings and would frequently wear mismatched earrings. She routinely followed the beat of her drum. She’d even wear mismatched socks whenever possible … if she ever wears socks. As much as she pays attention to fashion, she also likes to add her quirks to her dress sense. Between her jewelry and hairstyle, she makes sure she is remembered for being skilled and her appearance.

Just like with her clothing. Devon loves to wear dresses and skirts. With the Ilvermorny dress code the way it is, she always wears sandals. She loves wearing colorful clothing, as well. Bright colors filled her wardrobe, her favorites being the pastel colors. Despite the dress code, she always tries to look her best. Whenever she could, she enjoyed expressing herself even more with muggle clothing. She puts forth considerable time to ensure her clothing looks good and that she wears only a limited amount of make-up. As she grows older, she’ll spend that much more time applying the makeup she chooses to wear.

Calming Presence (Year 2) WC: 405

Picture it. Devon was in the dressing room changing into a beautiful outfit for a violin recital or changing into a leotard so she could practice dancing. No matter what she’s doing, she stays calm and collected. She thinks about the upcoming competition but doesn’t let it get into her head. She knows she practiced well and that becoming nervous about the situation would not help. So, she kept her head calm and composed.

Even more so, Devon would comfort the other girls around her in the changing room of the dance studio and the auditorium. She’d do her best to calm their spirits, including the girls she was supposed to compete against. Even after a few minutes of talking to her, the other girls would feel calmer and less stressed. After all, Devon believed in a fair competition, where she’d test her skills in a head-to-head match. It would even the playing field, which made her much happier if she won (and made her humble if she lost).

Throughout her time in muggle school, Devon never stressed about her homework. She was pretty studious, in fact, and never let the pressure of an exam haunt her. She never experienced that annoying feeling of anxiety and stress. Her mind was perpetually at ease; her performances spoke volumes due to her never worrying. She knew she could do the work, knew that she studied a lot, and believed in herself. As such, she never attempted to second-guess her decisions or confidence.

When Devon came to Ilvermorny as the youngest child in her family, she already heard stories from her older siblings about the school. So, when she started, what occurred at the school felt like second nature to her. Taking part in the ceremony for her house didn’t stress her out. Although she was very happy to have been chosen by the Horned Serpent - it was the house she hoped would choose her. With all the magic all over the school, she did not show any extra worry about her abilities. Even though it was all new to her, she took each challenge with stride and a smile. She studied until her mind went numb and joined as many clubs and activities as she could manage. While she was always on the move, she was happy with her life and her decisions. Her presence was calm, and she exuded that feeling to those around her.

Prodigal Divination Learner (Year 3) WC: 582
Reducio
After her first year at Ilvermorny, Devon did not take the summer completely off. When her siblings bought their books, she enjoyed sneaking glances at her older brother’s books. There was one with a crystal ball and a giant eye! And one with … numbers! As such, she was immediately drawn to the Divination and Arithmancy textbooks (and was always good at math when she was in the muggle public schools). When she was able to, she snuck into his room and glanced through the pages of the book. She saw images of techniques she briefly heard about in the muggle world … palmistry, tarot cards, and tea reading! But she nearly dropped the book at the mention of Xylomancy! Tree-branch reading! That wasn’t something she heard of before … but it dealt with branches! And she loved being outside!

Taking very brief notes, Devon copied what the twigs actually meant. Furthermore, she even drew pictures. So, as she walked to Central Park to play soccer and meditate in the grass, she would practice trying Xylomancy. Having no idea if she was doing it correctly, she routinely confided in her best friend, Kaitlyn Connor (my PC). The girls had exchanged phone numbers before, so Devon started text messaging Kaitlyn with her findings.

The girls also routinely FaceTimed each other. Devon would be sitting in Central Park, showing Kaitlyn what she learned about the tree branches. They even video conferenced, drinking tea together to try to read the leaves. Any time Devon wasn’t talking to Kaitlyn, she was on her computer or phone, looking up tea reading. She was amazed at the prospect of being about to see the future.

When Devon came to Hogwarts for the Spring Soiree in 2025 during her second year, she met with Kaitlyn, and they read each other’s tea leaves. Devon also attempted Xylomancy again, but got even more confused. While she had a fun time with her best friend, she didn’t want to confuse herself further. When she left Hogwarts to go back to Ilvermorny, she promised to do more research. And research, she did!

A lot of her time was spent in the Ilvermorny library reading up on Divination. Devon also liked to spend time with her older sister, Rebecca, reading her Divination textbook, as well, while they painted each other’s fingernails and toenails. It made for a good way to pass the time, plus Devon liked it that her older sister supported her thirst for knowledge.

Naturally, when Devon went home for the summer holiday, she couldn’t do anything with magic. But, she constantly enjoyed drinking tea to read her leaves while FaceTiming Kaitlyn. She began to keep a journal of her readings. Lo and behold, she finally noticed a lot of them coming true. For the ones that didn’t, she noticed that she missed an interpretation that likely fit her circumstances better. All of this would be written in her journal. Naturally, she wasn’t a student of the class yet, but recording her thoughts would likely be helpful.

Now, with her third year approaching, Devon proudly bought her Divination and Arithmancy textbooks, along with a set of Tarot Cards. She could be routinely found taking very copious notes from the books, cross-checking her notes with what she had already tried out … all the while happily chatting with Kaitlyn. When it came time for choosing her new third-year classes, she checked Divination and Arithmancy immediately, happy to have the chance to properly learn the material.

Such a clean throw. Chuki didn't even need to explain in any form of words. Broom Racing's sole principle was that everything can be done without even a voice to spare...unless its casting spells. But regardless, Chuki threw the boy ahead like it was second nature. And it was, from practice and the effort she placed years worth into.

She made a smile, seeing that her team member flew far enough to get a head start against the sole Ilvermorny racer that took to the skies. Did Chuki's words make the other two shiver in fear instead? Ah well, Chuki figured as she cracked her muscles.

"Ha! Stay where you are then, Ilvermorny! Even sitting around will not save your school's face!"

Did Hans expect his impromptu African teammate to do that? Not exactly. Did he enjoy it? Hell yes. Perhaps little people would have claimed they enjoyed being thrown forward with only open sky under them, but in a rush of the wind, the action proved of resourceful use as Hans found himself sailing far further than the other racers. All of the obstacles he passed with ease. The map was quite frankly false advertising; the chickens didn’t even make an attack of any sort, much less breathe fire. And the snow? That was a Durmstrangian’s element.

01. Fearless
Reducio
If Hans Jenssen was a wolf, he would have been drunk on the scent of fear.

It had always clung to the family - mostly with subtlety, though sometimes more pungent than others – like how moist moss clung to rocks. Greta Jenssen, under maternal pressure, climate of opinion, and Durmstrang’s Dark Arts curriculum, came to truly understand the treachery of magic, through certain unsightly scenes she had experienced at the Institute. Combined with the traditional beliefs of devoted Christian Klaus Jenssen, the situation eventually aggravated to the point where they had become fearful of their own son, sending him to Durmstrang out of disease at his abilities. It was disgusting. It was pathetic. It was shameful.

It was all the motivation Hans required to be nothing like his predecessors. Ever since Hans’ accidental instances of magic became particularly noticeable to his parents, at around the age of ten, he had been told to dampen his powers, to stay wary of himself, to never allow emotions to get the better of him and for his magic to lose control, to fear himself. Of course, that was exactly what he did not. Hans saw fear as the weakness that held back her mother’s (once a successful witch) true potential and would only hold him back from what he could achieve. Fear was a wild land of doubts that required conquering and taming, so taming was what he would do. He would not heed to it, rather, he would make fear heed to him.

Reckless, they had called Hans, always the one to climb the highest tree (even when it seemed as if it could not support his weight), seek out the steepest route on a climb (even when the rocks seemed loose), dip into the deepest waters (even when the currents looked slightly too treacherous). He talked back to teachers, which only seemed to escalate any trouble he was in, disagreed with coaches, despite their strategies being flawless, and most importantly, disobeyed his parents, reading any texts he could get his hands on magic, fiction or not, all without a second thought or a droplet of fear about the following consequences. Yet like anything, fearlessness was a double-sided coin and to Otto Hoffman, Hans’ maternal grandfather, a quality, especially after he had witnessed the downfall of his own daughter. What started as courage was nurtured into a dare-devil nature, yet Otto withheld the belief that with his careful honing, it can become Hans strongest trait.

Perhaps, it did, but it also became one of his weakest. For he was not truly fearless. He was phobophobic, afraid of fear itself. How ironic.
02. Charmer
Reducio
It might seem to the casual eye that despite being from a magic-intolerant half-blood family, Hans Jenssen had every opportunity in front of him.

He seemed to be the main character of his custom-tailored chronicle, a spotlight following him as it does the lead singer, from the way he kept his eye contact, his head high, his posture straight yet relaxed, his clear articulation. He took easy initiative without much thought, able to rally all audience members with a chef's salad of humour, persuasion, passion, and casual, comfortable, confidence. He knows how to drive a point home and knows how to do it in a way so others would be behind him. As former team captain of his school's football team, leadership seems almost like second nature, something he almost derives strength from.

Hans has a certain composure to him that he almost never loses, an obviously positive yet seemingly careless nature. With friends and positive acquaintances, Hans feels like a ball of sunshine and positivity, all smiles, easy laughs, and radiations of enthusiasm. Such an upbeat aura draws others in with interest and causes them to want to spend time with the boy. He is actively assertive and outgoing, never against associating himself with new people as long as they share fairly similar values or interests. Once such associate have become those he could call friends, he is especially caring and loyal, trait that would only go on to draw in more people to befriend him.

However, perhaps do to his young age, he never takes anything quite that seriously, a flaw, certainly, yet exuding a peculiar innocent charm, especially popular among his classmates back in elementary school. This nature entailed a lighthearted and jovial outlook with a particularly nonchalant nature that was almost rarely seen in Durmstrang's prestigious and uptight environment. While Hans would argue that the academy required some relaxation from time to time, he also knows when to halt. Fun, games, and jests are certainly alright, but with professors, it always had to stop at a certain point for his grades to begin. He presents himself as eager to learn magic (which he is, due to not having been exposed to it for most of his life) yet not as a "teacher's pet" if one would. This did wonders at earning him respect in a condition where the powerful and successful were valued above others. Finding a balance seemed essential, as being too respected often led to intimidation, he found, as well as a much colder reputation than he desired.

What is charming? One might enquire such. If it had anything related to popularity and pleasantry with masses, then Hans was fairly quite the master.

you will burn and you will burn out; you will be healed and come back again. and i will wait for you.

Wonderful, there were more spells cast this time. Aston was happy to see that one of the Ilvermorny racers, Cursa, rejoined the race. He cast a spell at the Uagedou racer that swung Hans forward last round but Chuki managed to hold on to her broom. As a quidditch player Aston had to say that casting spells on brooms seem hard, the aiming must be a nightmare!

The racers further ahead didn't stand - sit? - idle either. Devon aimed to cast a shooting spell at Talvikki and Talvikki tried to blatch Devon, just ram her broom right into the other racer. Both of those looked like it would hurt if they hit, if, unfortunately for the both of them, the other had quick reflexes and managed to dodge away from the attack.

UNIT 3

UNIT 5

That red headed racer from Ilvermorny still hasn't moved at all, was there something wrong with his broom? Cursa raced ahead but Chuki sped past time, likely from not spending her time casting spells at people. She zoomed past the chicken but it still didn't breath any fire, how sad.

Ilvermorny:
Devon sta: [d20 : 4] + 10 = 14, pass

Devon and Kikki end here
The pair that just tried to attack each other still stayed within range of each other, not letting one or the other get ahead. Even while going through the snowfall on the track they didn't slow down, the snow seemingly being of no difficulty for them.
UNIT 8
Hard fog - DC 25 acc

Durmstrang-Uagadou:
Hans acc: [d20 : 17] + 9 = 26, pass
UNIT 11

UNIT 12

Hans ends here
Hans stayed in the lead, the fog not lead him astray or lost. So far he really has been making light word of all the obstacles. But the thorns in the middle of the track finally slowed him down ever so slightly. Well actually it didn't slow him down, Aston was impressed by the way Hans continued racing despite the wounds caused by those thorns.

Still well in the lead and feeling fairly invincible, Hans was humbled when he was hit with hard fog. Normally an easy obstacle, this one he had barely passed without getting lost in its treacherous hazes. Still not fully orientated after that encounter, the next obstacle failed to slow him down but it was exactly his speed that made the scrapes hurt more as the thorns drew bloody lines across his skin. Biting down the pain he continued, and managed to make it away from the thorns, and away from the close vicinity of his opponents.

Finally, things were getting interesting. Instead of simply flying ahead like a robot, Kikki had made the brilliant decision to go for the blatch against the Ilvermorny racer that was right beside her. If her teammate that was ahead simply flew while Kikki knocked the girl off her broom, their victory was practically guaranteed. It seemed that the American had plans of her own, quickly casting Jaculor at her. Kikki, of course, dodged. This was because what on earth would she do otherwise? Get hit?

Her blatch missed as well, with Devon swinging out of her path, and the two remained in the standoff. Talvikki led by her fellow Durmstrangian, and Devon as the leader of her pack. It was time to win this. It felt pleasant to look ahead and see Hans fine, atop his broom and gaining distance. Oh wait, there was blood. Well, if he wasn’t fine enough to race and it cost them the match, Kikki wouldn’t hold back— this was no time to sit idle. They would have to fly like their lives depended on it so that they could beat these filthy Americans and go home champions.

Kikki has, throughout her life, always strived for perfection. Mastering multiple languages, practicing and memorizing any theory that might be remotely helpful later on down the road. She kept a well taken care of appearance, with well brushed hair and impeccable poise. It has been drilled into her that anything less than perfection cannot be tolerated. This is why Kikki always puts her everything into any action she makes. From brushing her broom, to make sure it is sleek, without a hair out of place, to how she speaks to other people. She has ensured that no matter what she does, she will always do it to the highest level, as to achieve perfection.

This has come to the front many times, but particularly when she was writing. Calligraphy was never something that Kikki focused on, as her writing didn’t need to be pretty for others to understand her. This all changed for her in a single moment, as her tutor questioned her place in her family because of messy handwriting. “There’s no way, with that handwriting, that you’re an actual Tähti.” His scornful voice will often surface in her mind when she questions if the effort she puts into everything is worth it. Kikki will always remember the way his eyes scanned her words on the page, before looking back at Kikki with underlying disgust.

Since that fateful day, she would practice how to write with her quill so that the words that flowed out were graceful and elegant on the page, never daring to damage her family’s reputation again. Because as many times as it was hammered into her that she stole their heir and wasn’t a true Tähti, she also was told over and over that her actions reflected their house as a whole. To ruin the family image would be to ruin her parent’s lives, according to how many times she was scolded into perfection.

Now? Kikki brushes her hair and braids it, ensuring there isn’t even a single hair out of place. Now, she takes such good care of her equipment, such as her broom and various stationary as to keep the shining look of brand new and perfect supplies that they need to be. Now, Kikki is too terrified to get anything wrong, lest she bring the entire family legacy toppling down. Instead, she reads all of the textbooks prior to classes. She listens to all the stories about Durmstrang, as to prepare herself for her future. She knows each and every class that she’ll take, she’s heard descriptions of the castle from everyone willing to tell her, and has mentally braced herself to be the very best that she can be: perfect.

Upon learning of Kikki’s selection of Broom Racing, her father had immediately hired a tutor to oversee her progress atop a broomstick. She had to be strong and fierce, yet quick and agile. All of these were difficult, and yet the young girl thrived. Kikki was always someone who wished to be part of something bigger. To be a gear turning amongst a machine, to be a key part of the success of a project. She chose Broom Racing because it combined so many things that the other sports wouldn’t even dream of. She could be casting spells left and right, or even chugging a potion in the middle of a match. Kikki could also simply fly, as quickly as possible until she physically could not find it in herself any longer.

Until the summer games, Talvikki was practicing with a full on Broom Racer. He was bigger, stronger, faster, and had loads more experience than she did. So Kikki learned. She adapted. She figured out how to respond to bigger, better opponents. It wasn’t as though she was a pushover— Talvikki was actually tall for her age, had boasted longer arms to match her torso. These helped her, particularly when blatching. Her elbows would find her opponents side and her broom would slam into his broom, attempting to knock him off balance while she shoved him from the broomstick.

Blatching was one of her favorite exercises, simply because it was the area in which she improved the quickest. This was why, at the end of her summer training, she insisted on a full blown race between the two. Her tutor understood her plan, and Kikki didn’t care. Because while she may still need improvement in many other areas, her form while blatching was nearly perfect, and it was incredibly likely for her to topple him from his broom, rather than he to escape to the finish line before she could finish him. And so it was. They lined up for the race, both zipping from the starting line as soon as the words “And… Go!” left the moderators mouth.

It was momentary. It was immediate. It was beautiful. Talvikki lined up her blatch and soon found herself looking down as he was sent tumbling to the ground below. But the difference, this time, before she took off to capitalize on the lead that she’d built? It was the earsplitting CRACK that seemed to echo in the air around them as the broom she had collided with was sent tumbling to the ground as well, this time in two pieces rather than the one it began in.

Devon could not help but giggle as Kikki tried to blanch her. But, just like the spell she had attempted, it failed. It appeared to be a standoff, for now. “Niiiicccceee tttrrryyyy,” she sang out playfully, as she shot forward. Faster and faster and faster. And right through a snowfall.

Ah, but not fast enough! Devon came to a stop, again at equal footing with Kikki. An interesting turn of events. The boy, Hans, was still much further ahead, still, unfortunately. She turned her green eyes back to Kikki and gave another friendly wave. “Hi, again! Can’t keep away from me, can you?” She teased, giggling and flipping her pigtails over her shoulder. “Then again, great minds think alike. Wouldn’t you agree?” She asked. While her tone was clearly playful and teasing, there was no malice or condescension behind it. Rather, she was still her friendly self.

Oh? Chuki couldn't help but slightly pause as a flimsy magic spell attempted to pull her back. Her broom shook, and it resisted the tug. Chuki couldn't help but laugh as she so easily pulled back like nothing. A mere rabbit attempting to fight against the cheetah? She looked back to see who dared to seek a fight against her,

"Foolish." She only spoke, turning her head back. She knew at least a few members of her homeland tribe were in the crowd. She will make them proud. When she wins, she hopes she'd get a personal bowl of rabbit stew in celebration once she returns home.

ILVERMORNY RULES!!!
Cursa watched in dismay as the Uagadou girl managed to slip away from his spell casting. Grr. She laughed. Cursa let out a resigned sigh as Colin's broom at last jerked into motion! "WHOA!" He had to scramble for a moment. Grabbing the suddenly moving broom whilst trying to be flung whilst also trying to keep hold of his wand was proving to be difficult! He probably should have paid better attention in flying classes...

Those early classes were horrible! The older boys made him fly on an actual charmed Swiffer mop! How humiliating! The only real broom he'd ever flown was Colin's ancient Cleansweep. It was pretty sketchy, like so many things about Colin, yet it was still pretty speedy. This Silver Arrow of his, however, seemed to have a homicidal mind of its own. Cursa wouldn't be surprised to learn that the broom had actually been cursed at one time or another.

Finally, he got the broom pointed in more or less the right direction. He knew Devon was way ahead somewhere, and that slippery Uagadou girl was within sight just ahead of him. For some reason, Basil had fallen asleep and hadn't moved an inch. Cursa was determined to, if not win, at least not be in last place!
