Duelling Moderation & Duelling Captain Expectations Update

We're implementing a few changes aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and overall consistency within the Duelling moderation team. These updates are now in effect:

1. Timeliness of Moderation
Expectations around moderation timelines have been formalized and will now be clearly communicated during onboarding and throughout the captain application process. Captains are expected to post within 4 days (96 Hours) after the player posting deadline (8 days from the previous mod post). If unable to do so, Captains must either request support from a fellow team member or communicate their availability so that someone else may step in.

After 7 full days ( 168 Hours )from the posting deadline (11 days from the previous mod post), responsibility for the thread automatically passes to the other Duelling Captains. This ensures players aren’t left waiting indefinitely. If you are awaiting moderation beyond this date, please contact your captains.

2. Patch Cycle Engagement
Patch engagement is now a formalized responsibility for all Duelling Captains and an included addition to the onboarding process. A brief activity report each patch stage will be coordinated by the team leads among the team.

3. General Site Activity
All moderators are now expected to meet the same baseline activity requirements as players. The minimum standard for both is:

One post per calendar month

This helps ensure moderators stay connected to the community and maintain an active presence on the site.

[So Feb 3 to March 3, Oct 9 to Nov 9] Some months are longer or shorter by a day or two, we do this by calendar month for clarity for the moderators and the players. In the case of users who have two accounts (eg staff with adult accounts), posting on either account will count towards this. For users with two or more accounts (e.g., iNPC subaccount, graduated student, or adult staff account), only the posts from the account associated with the roster will be counted.

Sadly, Clark Baird no longer felt up to the task of being a broom racing captain. There is no harm in that, but we will be on the look-out for his successor. So: we are once again looking for a co-captain to work alongside @Avery McCall (I swear they don't bite).

As a co-captain, you will be expected to:

- Moderate broom races
- Help with strategy and team discussions
- Contribute to the further development of the broom racing system with patching discussions and implementation
- Develop challenging race courses that may help you better your own moderation skills.
- Maintain and update the racing roster.
- communicate with your Head of House regarding access needs (and tags) for new team members as well as members who have been removed.
- Timely submission of team actions and stats to the mod for the game.
- Being part of our official Discord is a requirement of the role.

So why apply?

- You will have a hand in future development, policies, and patches
- You will be compensated for your efforts with IC money.
- There is a level of control that comes with this, and your efforts may make the difference between success and failure for your team.
- This is a moderator-level position that can be cited on staff applications.

The Test

Please keep in mind that you will need to complete a test based on the official Broom Racing system. This is so that we can determine if you are capable of understanding how to moderate matches and have the maths mastery for the role. While someone might be good at normal math, moderation can be difficult for some. When you receive the test, you will have until one week after we receive passing tests to complete it and send us the results.

Duelling Co-Captain Wanted

• This is a moderator-level position and comes with a certain level of responsibility but also privilege;
• You will be compensated for your efforts with additional money outside the one in your common room. (Money money money! We all want to be rich, don't we?)
• You can moderate a game for other houses;
• Just imagine your character as a captain. Would they be so cool?

Mechanics Changes

Trunk Locks Clarified
As trunk locks are a vital part of duelling we wanted to clear up some confusion about when a trunk is officially considered locked. If you request a trunk update but it isn't processed before the trunk lock date the update will not count for the upcoming stage.

This means that if you want to ensure that you have all your stats and abilities updated in your trunk in time for the trunk lock that we recommend doing so at least 14 days before the trunk lock date, as index can take up to 2 weeks to process applications.

Corrections For Moderation Error
We all make mistakes, and we as moderators are no exception to that rule. To make sure that everyone knows what to expect when a moderator makes a mistake during a duel we've discussed a few clear rules.

• The deadline to correct mod errors is the next round's mod post.
  - This means that as long as the next moderation post has not been posted yet mistakes in the previous moderation can be pointed out and will be able to be edited.
• There is a 24 hour action extension on mod errors caught 24 hours before/ after post deadline
  - If a moderation error is caught within 24 hours of the deadline to post and send in actions the duellists will be notified of this and given 24 hours to send in modified actions if so desired.

Spell Changes and Clarifications

Cracker Jinx
To avoid confusion we have edited the wording for the duration of the Cracker Jinx and if allies roll EVA on an auto hit/miss on the original target, we have also added an auto fail counter. The spell has been edited to reflect the following:

• If two or more duellists take damage from The Cracker Jinx then the duration will be set to 1, if only one duellist takes damage from the spell then the duration is rolled as normal.
• If The Cracker Jinx auto misses the target or the target auto dodges allies will still roll evasion for the radius damage.
• A +2/-1 AFC has been added to the Cracker Jinx

Reducio

Damage
• 50 + AP × 15 blast damage or 20 + AP × 8 for radius damage
Effect
• Exploding Wizard Crackers are conjured.
• The spell is affected by the Auto-Fail Counter (+2/–1) mechanics.
• -3 Wisdom for the duration of the spell.
• Upon hit, the target receives blast damage
• The target's ally needs to perform an evasion roll for the original accuracy roll, to avoid radius damage + effect. Even when the original target auto-dodges or the caster auto-misses.
• There is a 10% chance the explosion will affect the caster as well, in which case they'd take the radius damage and effect.
Repeated Hit
• If several effects are to be applied, only one Wisdom debuff is applied.
Duration
• If 1 duellist takes damage : 1-2 rounds (1d3, 1-2: 1 round, 3: 2 rounds)
• If 2 or more duellists take damage: 1 round
Nullify
• General Counter-Spell removes the whole effect and stat loss.
Critical Failure
• The damage and effect are applied to the caster
• An Acc vs Eva roll between caster and their ally decide whether the ally is hit by the radius damage + effect
Critical Success
• No chance of hitting the caster, no duration roll — max duration applied.
Impaired Hit
• The target suffers -2 Wisdom and takes half the damage.
