2024/25 Stage 2 Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 2

Her Confringo was as successfully cast as usual, thankfully, but things didn’t go as planned. “HAVEN, watc—”she gasped when the spell veered off course and went straight towards her teammate. Haven wasn’t in time to duck the blow, and Lindsey winced as the spell hit her fellow badger—she was perfectly aware that that her own spells hurt. Especially Confringos. “I—I’m terribly, terribly sorry that it went wrong.” Lindsey clenched her wand hard, genuinely remorseful. “Are you still okay?” She asked, sheepishly.

Lindsey cursed herself under her breath. This was all her fault. Lea was already being unlucky enough, being chosen as the prior target of their opponents, and now she was adding insult to injury. This didn’t usually happen, true, and should she blame that potion for it? Lindsey groaned. This wasn’t a very appealing way to kick off.

The trip jinx was no joke. Being able to dodge and maneuver was highly important for Lea and suddenly having that partially taken away left the Hufflepuff in a world of pain after the rest of the spells were thrown. From exploding crackers to full on explosions, Lea was unable to aim a spell of her own as she squinted in an attempt to focus. Gryffindor had grabbed a quick lead, the badgers seeming to get stunned by their speed as none of hers or her teammate's spells hurt the lions. She winced, glancing as Lindsey would also unfortunately go for Haven- hopefully this could be turned around.

Extension

"OOOOOoOOww!" Haven said to Lindsey. "You're supposed to aim for the other team, not for me! Even I know that!" She rubbed at her arm and sniffled back a few tears, the whole potion thing messing with her brain a little. "Great! Now I'm leaking! In front of the other team! This is terrible! I want my cake and some hot chocolate."
She took an exhausted breath, even though they had just started. "I think I need a nap. Preferably not a forever one." She looked the Gryffindors dead in the eye. "Please don't hurt me."
It had been a long couple of days.

This round had been a true display of Galton's growth and maturity. A mention of "cake" a year ago would have, at the least, split Galton's attention. Now? Nothing. Such simple, sugary bait would not affect him. They would not be repeating the sorry display they'd put on last match.

So, while Galton did not have any cake. Not a light, fluffy, frosted tiered cake. Nor a mouth-watering-ly moist cheesecake. Certainly no sugar-dusted chiffon cake, or a delectable dundee Cake in sight. But he did manage to cast and land a hit. Cake would come later, it was time to duel.

It was an explosive start. Literally. Two balls of energy sailed across the piste. Evelynn’s was aimed at Lea who would have suffered less if she wasn’t thrown off-balance by Meenauh’s Trip Jinx. The spell descended to Lea’s feet and slammed into the piste below her, exploding in a manner that made the audience wonder if Lea would even have feet after this. Her teammate, Lindsey, tried to replicate that damaging spell on Evelynn but she floundered her aim, causing the piste to explode under her fellow Hufflepuff, Haven. Instead of going directly for a target, Haven decided to set her team up for the future by conjuring a thundering cloud over the Gryffindors’ heads. Despite the low rumbles, the cloud stayed dormant for now. Lea tried to give Galton a shower, but he was too busy preparing the Cracker Jinx to be bothered or even hit. Galton conjured two sets of exploding crackers, one of which was abysmally far away from anyone on the piste. The other was wonderfully aimed, catching all three Hufflepuffs.

In the brief lull between spellcasting, the Ravenclaw moderator retired from the piste and taking his place was a trembling second year.

Pyxis didn’t know if being here was a privilege or a punishment. Sure, taking Damion’s place meant that he would get more experience with refereeing the upperclassmen and the fact that he was deemed worthy enough to oversee this match was definitely a compliment. But the lad was still getting used to the absolute horror of watching people get decimated by magic, and standing on the piste with some of the oldest faces in duelling had him trembling in his expensive shoes. The floor of the piste was already decorated with two craters and countless shards of wood, and the duel had only just started. The young wizard gripped his cloak tightly to mask his shaking hands and cleared his throat to announce his arrival. Thankfully, these old folks didn’t opt to explode each other for their next bout of spells.

The Hufflepuffs were clearly not having a good time. Broken-open crackers still littered the piste and the charred craters were exclusively on their side. Pyxis almost expected them to return the favor with some fire power of their own, but a step back was seemingly taken. Haven took a route recognizable to Pyxis and aimed a Blindfolding Spell at Meenauh’s head. However, no blindfold was conjured as Meenauh stepped out of the way, her sight remaining intact. Lindsey chose a spell that Pyxis spent a couple seconds placing and it took everything within him to keep his eyes on the duel instead of rifling through the duelling notes he stuffed in his pockets. From the incantation, it sounded like the Hufflepuff wanted to deter Evelynn from using her arms and legs effectively. But the Gryffindor was too sharp, spotting Lindsey’s wand being aimed at her and easily avoiding the spell that shot out of it. Lea was the only one of them to have some success with a healing spell that left both herself and Haven shrouded in a glow. The latter felt herself becoming rejuvenated just before facing the oncoming barrage of spells targeted at her.

Galton’s spell left his wand first as he attempted to set Meenauh and Evelynn up for victory. His Trip Jinx caught Haven on her ankles which sent her stumbling and unable to full focus on avoiding the spells of Galton’s fellow lions. Pyxis’ eyes widened as he watched Meenauh conjure a set of crackers to join the ones already on the piste. So even the upper years rely on this spell? He knew what spell he’d be studying over the summer. Haven, still stumbling, was caught amongst Meenauh’s crackers as the festive items showed no mercy with their popping. Both of Haven’s teammates were too quick for the spell with Lindsey showing some brilliant situational awareness. Lastly, Evelynn had her sights on both Haven and the rumbling cloud above the Gryffindors. She’d take care of both of them. Two jets of wind left her wand. One went skyward and blew the cloud across the piste until it was situated right above the team who conjured it. Her second jet was discontented with being aimed at one target. Halfway to the Hufflepuffs, it split in two. Haven and Lindsey felt the breeze begin to pick up until they were both being blasted by the strong wind.
