Eonaria was staring at Avis as if she had no idea whether she was telling the truth, as if it might actually be possible to own a room for of handkerchiefs. That lit a slightly arrogant, mostly entertained fire inside of Avis. That was what she was going for. To be so incredibly unpredictable even the most mundane and obvious of actions seemed entirely strange. To be so unpredictable that she was, well, not predictable.
She nodded at Sabrina in acknowledgment of Ravenclaw's correct answer to Eonaria's question. "Yeah. A hex code just uses a hexadecimal system to represent colors. Black is 000000 and white is ffffff." It probably wasn't a very useful explanation, but if was hard to teach someone algebra when they don't understand basic maths, and Avis wasn't prepared to explain a hexadecimal system.
"but I can guarantee that Avis is interested in handkerchiefs- " Avis, holding back her laughter, gave Sabrina a look - No, I did not try in the slightest. Beginning to feel bad for leaving Eonaria so in the dark, Avis sighed. "No, I don't have a room full of handkerchiefs at home. My mum, however, is the President of the International Association of Women Who Refuse to Wear Handkerchiefs. People send her handkerchiefs and she burns them in our yard. Sabrina sent her some, and that's how we met." She spoke with a completely straight face as if this was a common occurrence in England, her meeting new people because they sent handkerchiefs over to be burned. This, of course, was even less true than her last statement, but Eonaria seemed ready to believe almost anything, and Avis wanted to see how far she could go.
Having frustratedly given up on her clarineting endeavors, Avis finally pulled the reed out of her mouth and placed it in its case, though she left the clarinet itself lying on the bench where she had laid it. As she did so, she heard Eonaria's truly terrible response. What had Avis just shot her a look for? Don't mention it. And now Eonaria had gone and done the complete opposite. After a quick look at Sabrina to determine any damage control she might have to do, she shot another look at Eonaria.
"Moving on - Christmas! How were you two? Anything exciting happened? I sent you both a gift, did you get it?" Avis smiled. It was a good thing Sabrina could find ways to distract herself. 'Yeah, thanks. Christmas was good." She shrugged. "Loud. It's always loud. Daniel decided to speak Spanish in protest of my dad speaking Nepali instead of English so we had three different languages going. Except Daniel is the only one who speaks Spanish, so it wasn't exactly useful for him."

XXXEonaria stared when Sabrina began to explain something about 'photoshops.' ...a place to purchase photos...? After Avis listed out a string of letters and numbers, she simply sat there with an odd expression on her face. "So you're just assigning certain colors different numbers... in a mathematical way?" She tried to imagine how many combinations you could make with six slots, 10 numbers, and 26 letters. Many. Very many. "...alright." Eonaria still didn't fully understand it, but decided to drop it. It's not like she was going to be doing Muggle color work, anyway.
XXXThen Sabrina commented that handkerchiefs were the catalyst to her meeting Avis, which made Eonaria raise her eyebrows. "What an interesting topic to relate about." But then Avis proceeded to explain that her mother was the president of... whatever abomination of an association that was. "Oh." That certainly was not believable at all, but then again, Muggles had some very strange group names... "Why not just burn the handkerchief yourself?" Don't mail someone your handkerchiefs. That's just downright concerning for those people.
XXXEonaria took another look at Avis: her facial expression seemed a little too serious for the situation. She scrunched her eyebrows slightly, but decided not to question it. If Avis's mother truly ran an association for handkerchief burning, well, it was none of her business. Let the strange be strange. "What do you have against handkerchiefs?" Eonaria asked Brie, bewildered.
XXXAs the topic shifted towards the holidays, she nodded. "Yes, thank you very much! I really loved it. I shall forevermore use the gift thou hast bestowed upon me." Eonaria grinned, her thoughts flashing back to the silly roleplaying they had done when they first met in person. She turned back to Avis as the other girl spoke of how loud her Christmas had been. A little bit of wistfulness peeked into her heart.
XXX"That sounds kind of great." She said thoughtfully, recalling her own holidays. "My Christmas was quiet. Very quiet. Lots of books." Eonaria sighed slightly. She really wished her home could one day welcome her excitement at snow. When she first woke up and saw the blinding white blanketing the ground, she had squealed in excitement and rushed out the door as soon as she put her clothes on. Sadly, no one joined her. Ah, whatever. It'll happen one day. Okay, perhaps she was in denial.
XXX"What about you?" Eonaria grinned at Brie, trying to brush away the negative thoughts. She was going back to Hogwarts! With friends! But her brother's words briefly rang in her mind: "Friends aren't everything, Naria. You have to learn to rely on yourself." Her heart sank.

Avis must've known that her elaboration only complicated the hex code concept to the Griffindor girl, and Sabrina might've even scolded her for it if it wasn't for the way she said ffffff and 000000 while keeping a staright face. As it was now, Sabrina only snickered. In her opinion, Avis' seriousness sometimes acted as a double edged sword, making her seem almost comical at times.
It seemed that Avis was having fun expanding on the hankerchief lie. Sabrina was about to shoot her another look because - she knew the girl could lie better... Okay, she didn't see it in practice but come on, it was Avis. But to her utter shock, the surprise flashing in Nari's eyes was sincere, followed by a genuine question. For a moment, Brie just silently observed her friend, waiting for her to roll her eyes or somehow else express her realisation.. but that didn't happen. Instead, Nari followed up by yet another question.
This time, Sabrina send a quick questioning side-look Avis' way. Why was this lie working?! Scooting back in her seat she cleaned her throat before answering, "Builds.. community." she settled on witha shrug, moving on to the next topic completaly. She was happy to hear that both of the presents had arrived, and that the girls seemed to like them.
"Thanks for the socks, by the way. I am sure I'll make a good use of them" she gave Avis a smirk before turning back to Nari, "It is entirely my pleasure to hear that my gift has provided you with such joy, sire" she bowed slightly her voice just a little higher pitched. She was quite impressed at how good Nari was at this.. established kind of speech, vowing to herself to practice it more.
"And you understand Nepali?" she asked the other Ravenclaw, sounding almost incredulous. For as long as she could remember, Sabrina felt no need to understand another language. All her friends and family spoke english, and all of the media that interested her was in english too. Hogwarts was actually the first place where she was properly introduced to other cultures and languages. It fascinated her.
Opposed to the wonderful sounding Christmas Avis described, Nari's reply was almost.. sad - or at least in Sabrina's eyes. "Well, you can bet that you won't be getting a lot of quiet now. Not at Hogwarts," she said after a moment of quiet, swinging her arm around Nari's shoulders, bringing her closer. "Not with me around." she added, almost as if to comfort her friend.
"And my Christmas was great! My mom and dad always host this party for family and family friends so I a lot of people came by. It was a lot of fun. Oh, and I got an enchanted teddybear, that was definitely a highlight."

Sabrina was snickering at her explanation of a hex code, and Avis didn't understand why. It hadn't been funny, she had just been explaining a hex code. She shot a questioning look at Sabrina but was then distracted by Eonaria's response. The girl had believed her. Believed her! She actually believed that Avis' mother burned handkerchiefs for a living.
"Why not just burn the handkerchief yourself?" Avis flickered her gaze between Sabrina and Eonaria and back; this girl couldn't possibly be serious. She honestly couldn't even remember what association she had said her mother belonged to anymore. She was at a loss words. What on earth was she supposed to say? Thankfully, Sabrina seemed to pick up the story. "Builds.. community." A small smile snuck it's way onto Avis' face.
Sabrina then moved on to the next topic, and Avis sat back and listened. She was honestly unsure as to how to keep the story going, and she wasn't really sure she wanted to. There was a line between a joke and a taunt, and they were pretty close to it. A topic change was good.
"Thanks for the socks, by the way. I am sure I'll make a good use of them" Avis returned the girl snicker. "I know how much you enjoy swimming, I just wanted to make sure that you always have that feeling."
"And you understand Nepali?" "Hō, mērō bubā nēpālabāṭa ā'unubha'ēkō thiyō, ra uhām̐ ra mērī hajura'āmālē mērī bahinī ra malā'ī sikā'unubhayō." Yes, my father came from Nepal, and he and my grandma taught my sister and I. As she spoke, Avis smiled. It was a different sort of smile than what Sabrina usually saw. Usually, Avis smiles were more like sharp grins, mischievous smirks, or laughter. This was a genuine smile of joy, and it completely changed Avis. Speaking Nepali, for a moment Avis lost her Hogwarts shield, and it was as if she was still at the train station with her family.
As she finished though, her smile disappeared as she returned to Hogwarts, in a train with two girls who almost certainly didn't understand Nepali.

XXXEonaria looked between the two Ravenclaws, both of whom were now smiling rather suspiciously. Maybe she was hallucinating a little, but they seemed to unanimously decide to move on from the topic, so she did as well. "...right." She commented awkwardly. "Communal acts of arson are surely the most effective way to induce harmony." Eonaria beamed slightly when Brie returned the inside joke, feeling that flicker of happiness again. Brie joked that she would be getting none of that silence at Hogwarts, causing her to grin again. Eonaria's heart felt incredibly full, like it was going to burst.
XXXAh, crackerdoodles, I'm getting emotional again. Shut up. She listened, surprised, as Avis gave a demonstration of Nepali. It was a language completely unfamiliar to her. I didn't even know there was a language called Nepali, but don't curse me, I definitely dozed off during geography lessons as home... She grimaced slightly before quickly relaxing her face into a sweeter expression. Eonaria didn't want either of the girls to think she was grimacing at what she was about to say- because she wasn't! Really!
XXX"Wow, that was really impressive!" Hopefully no altercations today... "Do you speak any other languages?" She directed the question to both Sabrina and Avis. I mean, Avis already speaks Nepali, so it's improbable for her to know another language fluently- unless she does, in which case, er, you know what? Nevermind.
XXXBrie recalled her Christmas break enthusiastically, detailing the party her family had hosted for friends and relatives. "An enchanted teddy bear?" Eonaria asked, curious. "What were the spells on it? Or, well- I mean, what did the spells do?" She couldn't think of many things one would enchant a teddy bear with- resistance and dirt-repelling charms were likely, but that sounded more like a standard teddy bear with enhancements. What if it had been enchanted to move around and talk? Eonaria shivered at the thought. That would just be creepy.

Avis' further comment on her Christmas gift to Sabrina earned her an exaggarated eye roll, followed by a sarcastic: "How thoughtful of you." In all honesty, Sabrina loved the present, had audibly squeeled when recieving it. Even though it was just a stupid joke, the fact that it was from a friend made it special to Sabrina. So even though it definitely wasn't Avis' intention, upon getting them, Sabrina had worn the socks for good two hours.
Arm still swung loosely over Nari's shoulders, she now listened as the mentioned girl spoke - what she presumed was - fluent Nepali. "Wow" she said, wide-eyed, very much impressed "that's so cool! What was it that you said? Can you teach me something?" she voiced her interest.
It wasn't just that it sounded really cool, but also how Avis looked when speaking Nepali. Sabrina couldn't pinpoint what it was, but something changed, the girl infront of her transformed, suddenly brighter than Sabrina ever remembers her being, almsot as if shining.
Even when not looking at her, Sabrina heared the awe, matching her own, when the girl sitting next to her spoke. As if elaborating Nari's question, Sabrina raised her brows. Could Avis speak even more languages?
"Yeah!" Sabrina finally looked back at Nari, quickly jumping between topics "if I am close by, he gives me a hug every three hours- here, I'll show you" slipping her arm back from around Nari, she stooped down to pull her trunk out from under the seats, snapping it open. On the top, there laid a light brown teddybear with a ribbon red bow. Picking him up, she kicked the lid of her trunk back down, sliding it back under the seats with her foot.
"His name is Beau," she introduced her plushie to the girls, sitting him down between her criss-crossed legs, "he last gave me a hug this morning, so it should happen soon" she added, chin resting on his head, hands clasped at each of his sides.

"Do you speak any other languages?" Avis looked at Eonaria. That comment was...a bit too polite. But the girl was pureblood, and they all seemed to be exceedingly polite beyond what was possible necessary. She shook her head. "Tío speaks Spanish, but the rest of us speak Nepali, besides my mum and Maria." She rolled her eyes for a moment. "Tío will start speaking Spanish whenever we speak Nepali at home just to annoy us." It wasn't to annoy them, not really, more to let the family know that he was feeling left out, but Avis hadn't yet picked up on that social cue, and it would be a while before she did.
She shifted in her seat, pulling one leg up and over the other while glancing out the window at the Scottish highlands rapidly slipping past. She pulled her gaze back to Sabrina as the Ravenclaw pulled a Teddy Bear out from her parcel. An enchanted teddy bear, apparently. For a moment, Avis looked at it with a well-hidden look of jealousy. After all, she hadn't gotten anything enchanted. If Avis wanted something magical, she had to get it from Hogsmeade herself. Not that she went to Hogsmeade.
It wasn't as if Avis hadn't gotten anything nice, she had, after all, gotten the clarinet that was now sitting on the seat next to her, of which she was appreciative. But she hadn't gotten anything magical. For a moment, she wished She could be a pureblood, or a half blood, someone whose parent knew about and could get magical objects for Christmas.
But then she got logical. Magic teddy bear or clarinet? Clarinet, any day. Stuffed animals were not Avis' thing. And this was only confirmed when Sabrina mentioned the enchantments. It was enchanted to hug the girl. Avis was also not a girl for hugs. Or so she thought, in any case. Her family, though loving, wasn't exactly a hugging family. They were more of a poker family. As such, Avis hadn't really experienced many hugs, she didn't understand the value.
"Why'd you name it that?"

XXXEonaria nodded thoughtfully when Avis clarified on the language situation. "I thought you said only Daniel speaks Spanish?" She could be remembering wrong, or maybe Tío was Daniel. Brie murmured in awe at Avis's demonstration of Nepali, asking what she had said and if Avis could teach her something. Eonaria looked between the two of them, puzzled, as Avis simply moved on to comment on the teddy bear. She didn't miss the way Avis's face tensed just the slightest bit.
XXX"Awe, that's such a cute name!" She beamed, patting Beau's head. The teddy bear was adorable with its little paws and bright red bow. Eonaria wished she had a teddy bear that would hug her- but maybe only in private. She could think of many situations that could quickly turn embarrassing if a teddy bear just came up and hugged her.
XXX"Would he still hug you if you weren't together? For example, if Beau was in your common room and you were in the Great Hall, would he come find you or wait until you returned to give the hug? And on that note, do the hugs queue up? If you were gone for 9 hours, would he give you three hugs? Or just one extended hug? Does the time keep ticking if you're not around to receive the hug? Or do you just carry him around all the time?" Questions spilled out of Eonaria as her brain went down yet another rabbit hole. Once she finished, her cheeks were tinted slightly red. The intricacies of magic were just so interesting. She could probably come up with more questions if she tried.
XXXFor Christmas, she had gotten some more interesting books than usual, along with a wand sheath she could strap to her arm under her robe sleeve. Very elegant, very practical, very... impersonal. But hey, not many complaints. It was pretty. Also that one book about Lethifold-Dementor theory was fascinating. Eonaria turned to Avis.
XXX"What did you get for Christmas?" Muggle things, most likely. Like that clarinet? She was secretly quite curious about what sort of things Muggle-borns received on holidays, other than books and toys and... teddy bears.

Thumbs stroking up and down through Beau's soft fur, Sabrina gave her teddybear a peck on the top of his head before looking up again. Nari was asking a follow up question on Avis's elaboration on her bilingual family. "Did she?" She tacked on, fingers sliding down to hold Beau's right paw. She briefly wondered what it was like to speak a language noone understood. Or at least the people you were speaking to.
The lack of response to her owm questions wasn't lost on Brie meeting the other Ravenclaws eyes with a small pout, more thoughtful than angry. "His" she corrected, " and it's from a book my cousin was reading. There was this guy named Beaufort? I thought the name was funny, so I name him that" she grinned down at her plushie, lightly tugging his arm up, "What was it you said in Nepali?" she called back to her unanswered questions, "could you teach me something in it?"
Meanwhile, Nari reached out, patting Beau's head whilst complimenting his name "thanks!" she beamed, not shrinking at the onslaught of questions that followed, actually welcoming the excitement, swiveling to face her friend more properly. "I am not sure, actually" she admited with a humm, looking back down at the teddybear, as if he could answer the questions for her "I don't think I was away from him since recieving him. Guess we'll see?" she smiled up at her.

"I thought you said only Daniel speaks Spanish?" Avis gave a sharp nod. "Yeah; Tío, Daniel, Tío Daniel. Same person." It depended, really on the conversation. According to her mother, Avis was supposed to call him Tío or Tío Daniel, as a sign of "respect." But her father always referred to him as Daniel, and so did her grandparents, so when Avis was talking quickly she tended to forget it. Plus, her mum wasn't here right now, was she?
"What was it you said in Nepali?" Avis, in all honesty, had been so distracted by the scenery outside the train that she had completely missed the question the first time, but now she looked at the girls and smiled. "I said my dad came from Nepal, and he and my grandma taught me and my sister. Or something like that, anyways, it was a while ago." She grinned. "Technically, I'm a native in both languages, but my writing in Nepali is awful. Its sort of like Chinese, and way easier to speak in my opinion.""...could you teach me something in it?" Avis scrunched her brow for a moment, trying to think of an easy word to teach her, but eventually gave up and just went with the general. "Well, to say hello, you can say Namaskāra."
Questions poured out of Eonaria, and Avis let out a small sigh. She really didn't care much about the bear. She would pretend to, sure, for Sabrina, at least somewhat, but she really didn't care much about the conversation. Well, scratch that. She wouldn't pretend to either, but she would directly scoff at it either.
"What did you get for Christmas?" Avis grinned, gesturing animatedly towards the clarinet still resting on the seat beside her. "Got that clarinet. It's a nice one too, the Buffet student model. I got it from my parents and Tío and my grandparents and Aunt. Then I got little knickknacks from my sister and Maria.
