EmmaLee shrugged as the other three told her what the hat had said.
"Well, it's all speculation. Who really knows how the hat works except for the original founders? And maybe some professors who have studied it." She said, then turned to smile at Emily.

"Why thank you. I like to think that I'm smart but sometimes my grades say otherwise." She said with a small little laugh at her own expense. She gave a little wave as if to wave off Emily's concerns about offending her. "I'm not offended a bit. To be honest, I am a bit disappointed that there seems to be so much opinion on what is the worst or best house. It seems to divide the school a bit more than the founders intended. I think all the houses are equally good." She said with a shrug.

"Moreover, though, I am curious and determined. So I think the determined part won out in the end." She continued the previous conversation with another small chuckle at her own expense. "I love solving every little mystery that I can get my hands on. There are these non-magique books that my friend, Kiernan, found where a girl and two brothers go all around the world and solve all kinds of mysteries. I think that I want to do that when I grown up." She asked, putting her hand to the side of her mouth like they were talking about something secret.

"What about you all? What do you want to be when you grow up?" She stood up and clasped her hands behind her back, bouncing a little on her heels in excitement now that they were talking about something she was actually interested in. Although, figuring out how the sorting hat works was definitely on her mystery list to solve.

After Emily spoke there was silence until EmmaLee spoke. After she spoke Emily turned to her cousin to see that he looked somewhat bored. She didn't know if anyone else noticed this.

Emily then heard Lily speak. She noticed that Lily spoke to what EmmaLee said. She then felt that she didnt have anything to say. She then heard EmmaLee speak again, so she listened then said,

"Your welcome! As long as your grades are better then Hide's then your smart in my book! I'm glad I didn't offend you. Ya, I agree with you, E. It also makes no sense why almost everyone hates Slytherin. I don't hate it at all. I mean, Slytherin gave out good witches and wizards. Not only bad ones."

Emily stopped speaking since she said too much. She knew she had a point though. She then looked at her cousin to see him glaring at her. She then heard him say,

"This year I'm gonna get better grades than last year! At least I didnt get any T's."

Emily smiled at her cousin. She then saw his glare turn into a small smile which made her very happy. She then heard EmmaLee speak again so she turned to her and listened. Then she heard Lily speak. Finally Emily got to say,

"I love solving mysterious! I solve them all the time with Hide. Its very fun solving them with someone. But now, we can't as much as we used to."

Emily saw Hideaki's smile turn into a frown. Emily frowned too. But her frown didn't stay for too long since EmmaLee's question made her smile again. She then noticed that Hideaki smirked. She then heard him say,

"Well, whatever Em will be. I'll be it with her! Since thats what we promised each other three years ago."

"I either want to be a professor or be an Auror like my mother and brother." Emily says happily.

EmmaLee widely smiled at Lily. "I think being an author would be great and I'm sure your stories are a lot better than you think they are." She put a comforting hand on Lily's shoulder. "You don't have to show us anything you don't want to but I'm sure we all would be happy to read it if ever wanted to share." She said, continuing to smile and looking to Emily and Hideaki for back up. As Emily and Hideaki answered her question about jobs, she nodded.

"That is cool that you want to be like your family members. My father was a potions master and my mother is an herbalist and healer. I don't think either of those jobs suit me very well." She said with a small chuckle at her own expense. "My step father is a business man and he has expressed wanting me to take over for him one day, but that doesn't interest me either." She said with a shrug.

EmmaLee considered what her new friends said about mysteries and wrapped one arm around her waist, placed her elbow on her arm, and then put a knuckle to her bottom lip in a thinking kind of pose.

"Well, I mean, what if we could find out how the Sorting Hat works? Like completely. I mean, it could be as simple as a book in the library or going and asking Headmaster Lear, or it could be a whole interview of people and we could put a book or presentation or something together." She asked, looking up at all of them and shrugging. "Do you all want to try?"

Colin finished his homework at last! Now he could pay more attention to listening in on the interesting conversation going on just around the corner. Everything was so interesting --- he found it hard to pick a favourite subject! Their conversation turned towards the Sorting Hat, and that piqued Colin's interest! He recognised Lily's voice, one of the new snakelings, and undoubtedly a trouble maker in the making! The French sounding girl he didn't know, though had heard her talking in the great hall several times. The other two he didn't know, though apparently the boy was Slytherin as well.

He decided to get up and see if he could join them. Talk about mysteries and the Sorting Hat was too much to resist! As he came around the corner, he saw that the French girl was standing up and pacing about, talking excitedly about future jobs and the nature of that dratted Hat! Lily too seemed exceited about the talk of mysteries and future possibilities; but the silver haired Slytherin boy and the girl he was with were getting up to leave. "Perhaps mysteries aren't their thing!" he said under his breath. Colin wondered if maybe they had a date and that's why they were leaving.

Colin went over to the table and, bowing to the two girls, sat down across from Lily. He leaned over the armrest of the chair to greet the cat curled up under the table. His long hair spilled over and down to the floor. "Miaurau!" he called softly. Then he turned his attention to the others. "Hello, sister snake! Hope it's okay if I join you two? I heard you talking about mysteries and the Sorting Hat! What have you two figured out? I should have been in Ravenclaw, but here I am in Slytherin! But as you know, the Hat is never wrong . . ."

Rita was just reading some homework-related books in the Hogwarts library while trying to finish her homework, but the chatting going on in the library was a bit disturbing to her, which make her a bit angry, even wanting to shout to them "Quiet! I am working!". She looked up to see who was talking and found it was Lily, who was surprisingly wearing Hufflepuff clothes, along with some other students. She just met Lily twice, and she did not want Lily to leave a bad impression on her by shouting to tell them to be quiet. Instead, she said politely to Lily, "Could you guys lower your voice a little bit, please? I am trying to finish my homework, and I will join your chats very soon after I finished this homework. It would only take me roughly another 20 minutes." After that, she tried her best to focus on her work to get the job done. She knew the work was due tomorrow, so she did not want to procrastinate although it was what she normally did.

Her efforts paid off. After about 20 minutes, she finished her homework, and put the books back on the shelves and her notebook in her bag, before moving closer to Lily and the group of students chatting with her. She tried to lower her voice while trying to join their chats, "Hi, guys! I finished my homework and now can join your chats. But let us still keep our voices low because other students are working hard in this library. For those who do not know me, my name is Rita, Rita Su, and I am a second-year Hufflepuff. What are you guys chatting about? By the way, Lily, why are you wearing Hufflepuff clothes? Are you trying to trick others to think you are a Hufflepuff? But to be honest, I don't think you are a Slytherin. I just don`t think you are ambitious and cunning. Maybe I don`t know that side of you. Or maybe you can also fit in other houses. What`s your opinion? For me, I think Gryfinndor will be the only other option if I am not sorted into Hufflepuff. But Hufflepuff truly fits me best."

EmmaLee giggled a little as Lily seemed to backtrack when she talked about her mother. "I don't think my parents' jobs fit me, either." She said with a small shake of her head and a smile, before moving back onto the sorting hat. "Well, maybe we could ask Headmaster Lear to talk to it. It is probably kept in his office during the school year. I don't think he or any of the professors would discourage generally curious students. It isn't like that want to /do/ anything with it. We just want to understand it." She said with a small shrug as an older boy came over and sat down at their table.

Minx jumped a little, disturbed from her nap, as the boy leaned under the table to pet her, but she calmed at his gentle touch, butted his hand a little with her head in greeting, and went back to sleep as he sat back up to talk to her girl and her girl's new Lily-friend.

EmmaLee smiled at the cat's affection and then turned to the boy as he spoke. Apparently he was also Slytherin and knew Lily already. He seemed friendly enough. "Hello, Colin. I'm EmmaLee and this is Minx." She said, giving a little wave and then gesturing under the table. "We were just discussing maybe trying to go talk to it itself." She said.

Colin listened to the girls talk about the sorting hat and their ideas about how it chooses which students it sorts into each house. Mostly, though, he just listened to the way the three of them were talking. He knew that a lot of kids thought they should be in other houses. Colin always thought his friend Kim Aoki would make a good Slytherin. Or a Ravenclaw. He was a smart lad after all! Bailey, he thought, would have made a perfect Hufflepuff --- she loved baking and being with people, and she was just such a loving friend. Literally to everyone!

Of course, Colin thought he himself should have been in Ravenclaw with Liam. And now he wondered about these three. He didn't know Rita at all, though had seen the Hufflepuff around, of course. He had to stifle his laughter, though, when she started up on doing homework and how they had to be quiet so other students could work! Total Ravenclaw that one! he thought.

EmmaLee seemed nice and also curious. Perhaps Hufflepuff suited her well! Lily, of course, was a fellow Slytherin and he met her at her sorting. Like him, she was adamant about being in Ravenclaw. When she asked him what his thoughts were, he said: "I think you've got a really good point, TigerLily! Like --- you said you were determined to be in Ravenclaw, and so was I! I reckon I'm smart enough for Ravenclaw and I love studying and learning new stuff and all --- but here we both are! Slytherin!"

"I've always heard it said that the Hat takes into account where we think we should be. And you know what? I think it does! I just think it doesn't care that much what we think! Some of us end up where we really want to be; some of us end up in the last place we want to be. I reckon a lot of kids don't really know much about Hogwarts at all. It just puts us where ever it wants to, or maybe where ever it needs us to be!"

Once Lily announced that she was going outside, Colin checked his pocket watch to see what the time was. He still wanted to read for a while, so as Lily got ready to go, he said: "Was nice meeting you all! I'm going to off now and exercise my inner Ravenclaw by reading! See you at dinner, TigerLily!" He bowed slightly to the other girls before leaving.
