Time for a Rest

Emma was scared, mostly that she had no clue what to do and she was also beating herself up for the comment. Though how was she to know it was a sore spot after having just met Vanessa? But still, she should have been more delicate or something. Or at least that was Emma’s thought process as she sat there awkwardly, no clue what needed to be done. She gave a miniscule breath of relief when the tears turned to laughter, and the conversation moved on, glad her distraction tactic had worked. She just quietly said “You’re welcome.” Emma hoped that it wouldn’t return the conversation to the previous topic and that they could keep moving, not returning to the sadness of the previous conversation.
“Thank you, that’s very kind of you. I hope you get a cat as well! They are very personality filled creatures, aren’t they? You never know what you’ll face when you face a cat, or at least that’s been my experience.” Emma blushed slightly at the ramble, hoping that Vanessa did not take that the wrong way. Cats were good, just very independent and tended to want attention on their own. Admittedly it was more than possible that Owl’s would be the same, but she hoped for one that was elegant but friendly. Maybe that would be impossible to have both but she was determined to try when she managed to wear down her parents.
“I honestly hadn’t given a name much thought, but I suppose I would. It might mean it actually happens like visualizing it will make it happen or something.” Emma stopped, deciding she should just focus on names. “Maybe Artemis or I guess I could go silly with Owlbert, but Artemis just seems more majestic and the owl seems like such a majestic animal.” Emma grinned happily imagining her perfect owl in her head. It would be nice to have a creature that she could hopefully bond with as well as be able to send letters out without worrying about an owl not being available or someone else needing one more. “My least favorite animals are reptiles and snakes. I know snakes aren’t an animal but still they’re creepy. And reptiles and snakes are just as creepy plus dangerous and ughhhh.” Emma shivered just imagining those creepy crawly things crawling all over her skin. “Do you have a least favorite animal? What’s it like living near a forest?” Emma only really knew city living, even if it was the suburbs of a city. That was much different than living near the forest or in the country.
Emma started, not expecting such an abrupt question. Her cheeks blushed as the question registered and she shook her head. “n-n-no. I haven’t really met many boys honestly and not enough to have those kinds of feelings. Why? Are you?” Emma answered as quickly as possible, turning the question back on Vanessa and hoping her blush would die down soon.
