A Chance Meeting
@Emma WynnWhen Emma asked what it was like being homeschooled, Bailey thought for a minute before responding. “It was great, but it’s all I knew. Coming here was the first real school experience I’ve had ever, so it was a big change and very different.”
Realizing that she had never asked Emma what she had been reading, Bailey quickly spoke, asking “What book are you reading? Is it by a muggle or magical author? Who is it by? Is it for fun or for school?”
Trying to control herself, Bailey took a deep breath before continuing. “Sorry if that was a lot. I get overly excited about books. But at least I’m not the only one now- I have people like you and other Ravenclaws who love books too!”
Looking at the shelves, Bailey admired the library. It’s carpeted floors and never ending shelves were like a second home to Bailey. To be honest Bailey thought Hogwarts is my second home. Besides Leeds, this is the place I live. Though if we counted places I felt welcomed, Taekwondo would be in the list too. And really any library, but especially the one in Leeds
Zoning back into the conversation, Bailey turned her attention back onto Emma.Word count: 205 ishDon’t worry. It’s not a problem!

Emma nodded. “That makes sense. I think everyone had a bit of an adjustment whether they were in school or homeschooled or magical. After all, it’s not like there’s a magical school for younger kids so it’s a bit of a transition either way. Though definitely different from home schooling.” Emma could see that it could be overwhelming. She had kind of had some framework of what school was typically formatted like but that didn’t help with the whole loss of electronic tools, switch to quills and ink and parchment,…..magic. That had kind of thrown a loop in what she knew about school. But still the classes and switching between them wasn’t all that new so that was a blessing really. One thing she never had to deal with.
Forgetting she had come here and gotten a book, Emma blushed slightly, though she didn’t know why. It wasn’t like it was an embarrassing book. Shrugging, she grabbed it from beside her, and showed Bailey the cover. “I’ve been trying to read more about the magical world so when I’ve got time and the inclination I browse the shelves and grab random books. I kind of found this by accident. It’s called Weird Wizarding Dilemmas and Their Solutions. I figured it’d be a bit of a laugh.” Emma chuckled quietly, looking up again.
“No, no, it’s understandable really! That’s one topic I can talk a lot about.” Emma nodded, and grinned at Bailey, glad that she was making friends. “If you don’t know what book you want, what’s your favorite thing to do, just randomly browse the shelves or figure out subject matter and then focus only on those shelves?” Admittedly, Emma did both, but she figured that didn’t matter. It was just going to be fun to continue the conversation.

A Chance Meeting
@Emma WynnWhen Emma talked about the transfer, Bailey felt like she had done to a public school in the Muggle world. Deciding to ask and not just make assumptions, Bailey said “Did you go to a public school before hogwarts? And how did you discover your magic?”
As Emma picked up her book and showed Bailey, she said that she was trying to figure more out about the magical world. Understanding this, Bailey said “That’s understandable. I did the same thing last year.”
Reading the cover of the book, Bailey realized that she had read it last year! “And I am almost completely sure that I read this books last year too!”
Surely I read Weird Wizarding Dilemmas and Their Solutions, right? Bailey thought.
Reassured when Emma said that she talked a lot about books too, Bailey then went on to answer Emma’s questions.
“I tend to just roam the shelves, but sometimes if I’m looking for a book on a specific topic I’ll look there. I’m not picky at all though. How about you? Do you roam the shelves or do you search by topic? And how many books do you typically check out at one time?”Word count: 205 ish

Realizing that she hadn’t shared her own schooling, instead jumped right into questioning Bailey about hers, Emma nodded, and then decided she really should answer the rest of the questions. “I did, public school was super structured but I was lucky and had some friends in my classes so that wasn’t bad. Made the maths particularly a bit better. Umm…..well really, I didn’t put it together until I got the whole magic speech from that professor who delivered my letter. But then the fact that I kept thinking I was putting things down in one place only to discover them close at hand when I needed them started making sense. I’m assuming that was magic and not some weird memory thing. I did disappear or at least become somewhat invisible at one point when I was hiding from my parents in a wardrobe.” Emma perked up, thinking the last bit sounded cooler than the rest. After all, who wanted to say their magic could be dismissed as memory problems, rather than a definitive act. “What was your first sign of magic? I’m always interested in others’ stories. It’s amazing the many different ways magic can manifest.”
Rubbing the cover of the book, a somewhat unconscious action, Emma grinned at Bailey, happy that she understood. “Did you find anything particularly memorable?” Emma asked eagerly, happy to not be the only one who had been interested in learning more about this whole other world that she was now a part of. It wasn’t like she could ask her parents, they were just as clueless as she was although they were learning. They did want to know more but they were also kind of separate, as they weren’t living in it full time like Emma did. “Oh! Even better! Maybe we can discuss it when I’m done?” Emma knew it was quite a stretch to ask her to remember a book she had read a year ago but still it didn’t hurt to ask. Bailey could always say no.
Emma nodded along with Bailey’s answer. “Kinda depends on the mood I’m in really as to which method I go with. That’s a lot of my choices around books honestly, it all depends on my mood at the time.” Shrugging, Emma’s grin grew wider. “Oh, no this is an aberration! Usually I check out a stack of books, and at least some relevant to homework. Today’s just different or at least at the moment. It might change before I leave.”

A Chance Meeting
@Emma WynnWhen Emma started taking about her schooling experience, Bailey listened attentively, curious about what it was like.
Math… was never fun. Sounds like it wasn’t much different in public school. Maybe more friends, but not as much freedom. Both homeschooling and going to public school have their pros and cons it sounds like Bailey thought.
The the conversation turned to first instances of magic. When Emma asked for hers, Bailey smiled and replied “it was in my local library. I saw the new book by my favorite author and it just… flew like 20 feet across the library into my hand. The librarian, a squib, made everyone believe that she had tripped and I had just caught it, but she had to explain to my parents that I was a witch. That was an interesting conversation.”
After she finished, Emma mentioned that she usually checked out a stack of books. Bailey smiled again and said “so do I! I usually leave with about 20 or more books. How many have you checked out at once?”
When Emma asked if she would share some books that she read or if they could discuss it, Bailey said “Of course! I love discussing books I’ve read with someone who also loves books. That sounds great!”Word count: 220 ish

Emma grinned and chuckled. “Now see, that’s much cooler than mine! And oh how lucky! Squibs are from magical families but can’t do much magic right? Or am I misunderstanding. I think that’s what I recall reading, but admittedly it’s been a bit.” Emma’s smile dimmed, and she hoped she had explained it well. Or at least in a non-offensive way. She couldn’t imagine how frustrating that would be, to be surrounded by magic and not be able to use it yourself. It was worse than not knowing the magical world existed at all. At least then you didn’t see the amazing things that could be done but not be able to participate. Emma’s face had slowly lost the smile, her thoughts broadcasting across her face, as it did a lot.
Pulling herself back to the conversation, her smile grew and brightened as Bailey turned back to books. She tried to recall the most she had checked out at once, but admittedly she didn’t count very often so she just did her best to estimate. “I think around that, maybe like 17 or 18? I do know I needed help with the door, and I had to use my chin to try and keep the stack steady.” She could only imagine the image she had made, the books stacked in her arms and her chin resolutely holding them tight to her body. She had tilted the books a bit so they leaned against her body, and it had certainly been a bit of a balancing act. Plus the weight had been a bit heavier than what Emma usually did. “I certainly regretted not bringing a bag, or even better my backpack that day!”
“Awesome! Yes, it just seems to bring a new kind of light to the book I find.” Emma nodded along as she spoke, trying to describe the feeling she got when talking about other books.

@Emma WynnEmma chuckled and said that her discovering her magic was so much cooler than hers. Bailey disagreed, saying “I’m sure it was neat too. How did you discover you were a witch? And i think that is what a squib is… or maybe it’s someone who has magic in them but not enough to complete spells and such?” Bailey was worried she would be offensive, taking like this. She hated to be seen in a negative light and did her best not to be seen in such a light.
As the conversation turned back to books, Bailey and Emma both seemed to brighten. Maybe we were both worrying about being offensive Bailey thought. and I’m glad for the change of topic
As they were comparing how many books they typically checked out, Emma said she usually checked out 17-18 books. Bailey smiled as she continued saying that she regretted not bringing a bag. Bailey had, and decided to offer her help. “When you are ready to go I can help carry them back to your dorm, if you want. I know I can’t go inside, but I can get them to the door at least.”
Bailey smilies, hoping that she hadn’t just made Emma uncomfortable.Word count: 210 ish

Emma grinned sheepishly. It was kind of surprising really as it wasn’t anything huge. Her magic she meant. Really it had been mostly just things appearing close t hand when she didn’t recall putting them there. But then there was the one time she had almost seemed to disappear or at least blend with the shadows in her parents wardrobe after receiving her first..and only detention. But she also wasn’t entirely sure that had been magic, so she decided she’d go with the stuff she was sure of. “Nothing cool, I assure you. I honestly thought I was just forgetting things a lot. Several times when I needed things, they just happened to appear near my hand. I just figured I had set them there and forgot about it but then the professor showed up with my letter and it made sense. A bit reassuring as well, but definitely not as cool as a flying book!” Emma chuckled slightly self-depreciating.
Emma nodded, agreeing silently with Bailey. “Yeah, that sounds right.” Emma didn’t say anymore though, as she didn’t want to say anything that could be misconstrued about squibs. It seemed such a sensitive topic and she tried to avoid those as it generally meant she’d either become so awkward to end the conversation or she just couldn’t handle it and walked away or shut down. Either way, it never turned out pleasantly.
Emma grinned at Bailey. “If I can find that many books I’ll certainly take you up on that. Maybe there needs to be like a designated saying about bringing friends to book stores and libraries. Have you ever gotten lost in the book store like you do in libraries? I know I can’t buy them all or even a fraction but I just keep finding more and more interesting books that I seem to have a never-ending TBR!” Emma always struggled with choosing books when her parents gave her money to do so. It was so hard to choose only one or two, and then try and make a running list of the rest. Plus there had been times she accidentally grabbed the second or third book in a series and nothing made sense until she either bought the first book or found it at the library.

A Chance Meeting
@Emma WynnWhen Emma grinned sheepishly after Bailey had asked what her first instance of magic was, Bailey instantly thought she probably thinks it is not super impressive or important- but I think all magic is awesome. I should tell her that
When Emma revealed that she Ahmad made things she needed appear, Bailey gasped. Then Emma said that it was not as cool as a flying book, and Bailey replied “Maybe not to you, but I think all magic is cool and impressive and great in its own right.”
Then Emma said she might take Bailey up in her offer to help Emma carry all of her books back to the Griffindor common room.
Glad that she had, Bailey grinned and said “That sounds like a plan! And honestly I have the same struggle when it comes to book stores. I now carry a notebook for recommendations and stuff with me when I travel and stuff because I see so many interesting books out there!”
Looking around, Bailey saw a few people. It really wasn’t busy, and Bailey said that.
“I wonder why so few people are here? Is there like a broom race or quidditch match today? Do you have any idea?”word count: 210 ish

Emma shifted slightly, moving the book she had placed in her lap to the side and pulling one leg up and under the other, making sure her shoes did not rest on the chair. That would be rude and she didn’t like being rude even unintentionally.
Emma smiled, not surprised at Bailey’s response at all. She seemed very kind and good at making others feel better. Emma didn’t know how else to describe her. Plus Bailey had a very sunny outlook on things. “That’s a good way to look at things! I think I’ll keep that in mind when comparing stories, if you don’t mind?”
Emma laughed quietly, having fun but still aware they were in the library. She didn’t want to disturb any others who may have wanted the quiet. It also meant that she wouldn’t become the center of attention, something Emma avoided like the plague. She much preferred being on the edge, observing and able to engage with fewer people.
“Oh! That’s an excellent idea! And you can never have enough notebooks. You’re full of awesome ideas.” Emma gushed, complimenting Bailey. “I may have a bit of a notebook and pen problem, though after using a quill and parchment, it feels a bit strange. I’ve decided to try calligraphy as it seems like fun and something that would translate well from a quill.” Emma bit her lip, her cheeks turning a bit pink.
She grabbed onto the topic change happily. “ummmm…no I don’t. I admit sports aren’t really my thing but sometimes they’re fun to watch. Do you have a preference between the three main sports here?” Emma asked eagerly.
