You Can't Buy Them All  Finished

Della had just finished her ramble to Cassidy when a boy about their age dropped a book loudly next to them. They both looked over at him. Della was unsure what to say when Cassidy asked if he was okay. He seemed embarrassed, but he was trying to laugh it off. Della related to that feeling. She was often an awkward, walking bean pole, and she was sure she was embarrassing herself wherever she went. Della had expected witches and wizards to be confident and cool, but so far she had met fellow awkward preteens like herself. That was a bit of relief.

Della couldn't help but let out a chuckle herself. She hoped the boy saw it as laughing with him, not at him. "Hi, I'm Della. Uh . . . we were just talking about going to our first year at Hogwarts. We're buying the books." She hoped that that sounded like an invitation to join them and not be embarrassed. "Um . . . what book did you just drop? I was looking for an extra to read." Della tried to see the book where he placed it on the shelf, though she wasn't sure which one was the culprit. Was reading considered cool in the magical world? It had to be right? It's not like wixes watched television.

The boy seemed to try and force himself to relax, yet his face red as spices gave it all away. There was a short awkwardness thick in the air until Della beside her let a giggle escape herself. Cassidy couldn't help but wonder if she was laughing at the boy. She quickly dispelled the thought — no, she was laughing for the both of them.

Hi, I'm Della,” The pale-haired girl began to introduce herself to him, talking about their previous conversation.
Then Della asked what book he had now placed back on the shelf in its rightful place and Cassidy couldn't tell if it was to distract him or if she was genuinely interested. She decided it was probably both.

Cassidy slipped her own book back onto the towering shelf which looked as if it would collapse at any given moment due to the sheer amount of thick books weighing down on it. The 11-year-old came to the conclusion it was enchanted with some sort of charm to make it stronger. The Wizarding World seemed to make life so much easier, she couldn't see why they couldn't share their magic with muggles.

Cassidy turned away from the self and back to the duo, giving a tight smile to them both as she fiddled with a strand of blonde hair with her index finger.
It sounded heavy, do you like reading as well?” Cassidy added to Della's sentence.

Of course they were going to Hogwarts. What did he expected? Them buying their books there but attends Beauxbatons? As the girl who's name is Della chuckled at which Ashton thinks because of his stupidity which he couldn't blame her for, explained that they were buying their books for their first year at Hogwarts.

Della asked what book Ashton just dropped since she would like an extra book to read. "Let me see 'ere..." Ashton distractedly said while looking for the darn book that wouldn't just cooperate with him a while ago. Looking at it, he said "Well, if you would wanna know the history of the 20th century then Great Wizarding Events of the Twentieth Century would be fer you."

After he said that, the girl that Della was with, asked him if he likes to read which Ashton has rehearsed his answers many times since he would frequently get questions like that from acquaintances. "I don't like it but I do sometimes read when I got nothing better to do." Hopefully that was a convincing lie.

It's not like he's ashamed of admitting that he likes reading. No offense to the bookworms that he have met. But he did got teased by his friends for liking to read and them calling him a 'nerd' so he would just hide that little fun fact about him from everyone else that he meets.

Strangely the boy answered Cassidy's question by saying he didn't like to read—but he read when had nothing better to do. Nothing better to do in a magical world? Della wasn't sure she believed him. Of course, they all had to come to this store to pick up school books, but these three were in the back of the store, wandering through the stacks. He could have just bought his textbooks and walked out.

Usually, Della wanted to fit in, and she didn't attempt to go against the grain. But something about this boy's tone rubbed her the wrong way. Was he lying to seem cool? Did he think she was lame for being interested in his book? Why would he have picked it up in the first place? In fact, this behavior was something Della would probably do to fit in, but she wasn't responding well to seeing it reflected in another person.

Della looked the boy straight in the eye and said, "Oh well, I love to read." She reached across him and grabbed Great Wizarding Events of the Twentieth Century off the shelf. It was a little heavier than she had thought, and she almost dropped it. It wasn't quite the smooth move she had hoped for. She stuck to it though and began thumbing through the book—mesmerized once again by the moving pictures and overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the history of the world she knew nothing about.

Cassidy watched the boy scan the wooden shelves towering over the three for the book he had slotted back into place, labelling it as Great Wizarding Events of the Twentieth Century. Yet another non-fiction book. Don't get her wrong, Cassidy adores factual based books and loves to educate herself in the form of physical pages rather than websites but at least a few fiction books about tales of wizards and dragons would feel familiar to the ones she used to read when she was younger about the knights and princesses in towers. She missed those familiar books, even though she would usually ignore them became they were silly and overused. Now it seems most the books in the Wizarding World were factual.

Her attention exited the passage of nostalgia and re-entered the real world when the boy whom she didn't know the name for continued by describing how he only read when he had nothing to do. First she thought she should probably get his name sooner or later. Second she, for a small moment, felt a little superior to him. It wasn't something she could control, but she always felt people who read were more intelligent and had more respect from her than those who didn't. It was a stereotype she couldn't exactly shake. Then again, everybody judges others even if they don't want to.

Oh, well I love to read,” Della exclaimed as she leaned forward and tugged the thick book from its home on the shelf.
Cartoonily, the first-year lurched forward due to the surprising weight of the leather book as if she had expected it to be lighter. She steadied herself and began to skim through the old parchment, her eyes scanning it like a sponge soaking up water. Cassidy leaned forward to sneak a look at the pages she flipped through before twisting her head to stare at the boy.
What's your name? I'm Cassidy,” The blonde girl introduced with a respectful nod to him.

Della looked Ashton straight in the eyes before she said that she loves to read and then picked up the book. She looked like she could use some help with it though and Ashton was about to help steady the book on her grip but then the girl seems to carry it and read it on the spot just fine by her own. Ashton may have needed to carefully word out his sentence because he didn't know if he offended them or not. But probably the first one was correct.

The girl, Cassidy, introduced herself and asked for Ashton's name which is fair enough. "I'm Ashton. Nice to meet you two." He said. He doesn't really know if he should continue to chat with them or if he's not welcomed anymore but he'll just see where their little chat would lead to and push his luck. He'll be lucky enough to leave the shop with somewhat kind of friends or he'll be unfortunate with enemies.

"Do you guys have any preferences for books? I might... ye know, read some of your favorites if I feel like it." He said, and then became curious on their blood status. Don't get him wrong, he doesn't really care what blood status you are, it's just that they seem to be quite new to all of this sort. Magic things and all. Sometimes, Ashton just thinks of random stuff.

"If you don't mind me askin' are you all muggleborns? Or is new here?" Hoping he didn't offended them, he waited for their response. Truth to be told, he is a half blood and you can't imagine his surprise when finding out magic is real. His dad had to explain it to him 2 times before he got used to that information real quick.

The boy seemed to relax a little more, especially when Cassidy asked him his name. Ashton.

Della was still looking through the large tome when Ashton asked about their book preferences. And then he asked if they were new around here. Was he new around here? Was it normal to ask if someone was muggle-born? If he was from the magical world, then it probably was normal. If he was muggle-born, then they would all have to find out together what the decorum and manners were of this new world.

Della glanced at Cassidy, hoping for some type of signal that would answer Della's internal questions. Realizing she didn't want to stare, Della closed the heavy book and hoisted it close to her chest, and she answered Ashton's questions.

"I really like stories about teenagers and young adults in like fantasy settings. Well, it's weird to read them now that it feels like I am in a fantasy setting. So, yeah, I'm muggle-born. This is my first real day out in the wizarding world. Just getting used to it all. And maybe I will have to buy this book, as I don't really know anything about anything." Della nodded to the book in her arms and gave Ashton a small smile. "What about you?"

So, his name was Ashton. She had never heard that name before. Maybe he wasn't Scottish? Then again, Cassidy's first name wasn't very traditional either. Plus, she didn't know very many people outside of her close friend group — it was a miracle she hadn't caused this conversation to collapse
as upholding chats wasn't her strong suit. Luckily enough, Della seemed to be a little better at it than her.

The boy, Ashton, asked both the girls for any book suggestions first before asking if they were muggle-born. The question would make sense if he was a muggle-born, but not so much if he was more knowledgeable on the Wizarding World. If he's asking if I'm a muggle-born, do I look lost and confused? Do I look vulnerable? Yes, I am confused, but nobody else can know that. How do I look like I know what I'm doing? The string of thoughts clouded her mind. Anybody wiser than her would know it was silly to try appear as if you always knew what you were doing, but there was no wiser power to help her in this bookshop. So she straightened her shoulders and held her head a little higher to maybe appear more confident.

Della quickly glanced over at her for a moment — almost in worry. Did she not have a favourite book? Was she afraid of telling Ashton her blood status? As Cassidy stared back blankly, she turned away and described her cup of tea; teenagers and young adults; fantasy tales. They weren't her favourite, but she missed any book that felt familiar at this point.
I prefer books about mystery and detective work, because you can try work out what will happen, ” Cassidy described. She liked working out puzzles for a reason she did not know; she just liked it.
And I'm half-blood,” she added on, as if it were less important. Because books were always a top priority. Obviously.

"Well, it's nice to meet fellow half bloods and muggle born here. I'm a half blood as well but grew up in a muggle neighborhood. Only now have I visited a magical place. My dad explained all this magical world to me 2 days ago. And I'll keep all your preferences in mind." Ashton glanced at the both of them. Those were some interesting picks and before he even realized it, he was babbling on about his own preference. "I personally read more thrillers and pshycology crime fiction. Kinda like a mix of both of yours." He said shrugging.

The girl, Cassidy, suddenly straightened her shoulders and held her head high which confused Ashton. He was gonna question if there was anything wrong but was interrupted by his dad calling him. It looks like it was his cue to go. Looking at his dad, he nodded.

Then turning to the two, he said, "Well, I liked our little chat but I think this is a sign that I need to go. See you both at Hogwarts." And with that, he left Flourish and Blotts with his dad, leaving a little wave to them. Their conversation was cut short but he do hoped to meet them again and fix his first impression.

A man called Ashton's name—Della assumed that this man might be the father he was just talking about. Ashton gave them a goodbye, a small wave, and he was gone. Della gave him a wave back. What a strange boy. He's difficult to read. Maybe Della would see more of him at Hogwarts. Hopefully, things went more smoothly next time—she hoped Ashton would be a friend and not the alternative.

Della turned back to Cassidy, someone she could see more easily being a friend. "Well, he was . . . interesting."

Della looked down at the book she was gripping tightly, "I think I will buy this one. Maybe I'll have some time to read a little before school starts and learn about the last hundred years." She smiled at Cassidy. "If you see me around school, and you read anything good, let me know, okay?" She hoped that would be a good way to extend the idea of friendship without seeming overeager.

"I should probably get back to my mom. I left her alone with a salesperson and my book list, but who knows what could have happened to her by now." Della glanced through the shelves, but she wasn't able to see Lena anywhere.
