Time: a month or so before school starts

"So it's 15 silver ones to one gold one and 27 bronze ones to one silver one?"

"No, mom, he said 29 knuts to a sickle and 17 sickles to a galleon." Della felt a little embarrassed for both her and her mother as they traversed the colorful and overwhelming wizarding street. They probably clearly stuck out. Everyone would know that they were from the muggle world. Sure, the Hogwarts professor they had sent was very helpful with directions to the Leaky Cauldron. Della's mom, Lena, had trouble noticing it from the street, but Della was able to spot the pub with no trouble. Someone else from the Ministry of Magic helped them get into Diagon Alley and exchange their pounds for wizarding money. Della was soaking in every single detail like a sponge.

"Well, they sure did make it complicated huh?" Lena was juggling a sack of coins and the school supply list. She seemed to be taking all of this in stride. Like any concerned mother, she asked pointed questions to all the witches and wizards they've met along the way, ensuring that this was the right choice for her daughter, but she hadn't once protested the idea. She had only asked Della if this was something she'd wanted.

"Where to first?"

Della looked at her mom, a small smirk appearing on her face. "The bookstore, of course."

"That's my baby girl--we found out you're magic and all that, but some things will never change."

Della looked around, cheeks red, hoping no one heard that. Diagon Alley was bustling. She saw people in what she assumed was wizarding fashion, and others whose clothes looked more familiar to her--maybe they were Muggles or Muggle-born. She thought it would be difficult to find the bookstore in this crowd; she didn't even know what it was called. But each store, for the most part, had helpful sign: Potage's Cauldron Shop had a cauldron; Ollivander's had a large wand over the letters; and Flourish and Blotts had several books. Della made a beeline for Flourish and Blotts, pulling her mom along.

The inside smelled of old paper, dust, binding glue, and candle wax. It was wall-to-wall books, some on shelves, some precariously stacked, some even floating. Della's jaw couldn't help but drop. "Wow."

"Okay, let's try to stick to the list, you can't buy them all." Lena laughed, then frowned. "Also, I'm not sure how the conversion rate works--we have to budget carefully. I'm not sure how expensive this all is compared to our stores."

A friendly-looking shopkeeper spotted them from across the store and started making her way over. Della nodded towards her, "Mom, can you ask her for the books on the list, and maybe I can look around? I promise I'll only pick one new book. Just one extra?"

"Okay . . . we can do that. But don't leave me alone here for too long!" Lena looked a little apprehensive about navigating this conversation alone.

Della nodded quickly and started to purposefully walk to the back of the store where there were fewer people, in search of a new book.

Cassidy pushed open the door to Potage's Cauldron Shop and joined the vast sea of wizards and witches manoeuvring Diagon Alley, marching along with their footsteps echoing through the long cobble path. Her mother followed behind her, wand out as she guided a black cauldron through the mass of people. They made it a few meters before her mum stopped at one of the shops lining the alley, placing the cauldron by the window. Cassidy followed like an obedient sheep.
I can't carry this through the crowd, people keep bashing into it. I'll apparate home with it and come straight back,” she added quickly as Cassidy's face dropped at the thought of going into a shop alone.

Cassidy had always been quite socially nervous and hesitant, she also hated having to do new things that required social interaction. Plus these people weren't any old people, they were wixes. Despite her mum being a witch she had never really interacted with many other magical people and she didn't know their social norms. Her dad got a tad jealous of wizards and witches, as he was born a squib to the Fraser family, a family hosting Alice Fraser who had become a master of transfiguration and animagi, one of the few registered animagi in the wizarding world. So her mum tried to keep magic in the household limited, out of pity.

Next on your list is your books, they'll be in Flourish and Blotts, the green-blue shop with two windows on either side of the door,” She pointed vaguely into the crowd as she handed Cassidy the enchanted list, which had given itself a tick by the cauldron's box.
I'll come to Flourish and Blotts when I'm done.”
And with that, her mum warped away with a little swirl of blue warping the world around her, taking the cauldron as well. Cassidy blinked absently for a second before going to stare into the crowd, wondering whether to just stay there instead. But then mum will come look for me in Flourish and Blotts, I have to be there. With a small sigh escaping through her parted lips, she began to tread into the crowd, squeezing through gaps and weaving past huge birdcages, her misty gaze searching for any green.

It wasn't much wandering until she spotted the shop — a greenish colour with two towering checkered windows and gold lettering reading ʼFlourish and Blottsʼ over it. What a weird name, Flourish and Blotts. It didn't make much sense, but it sounded more like a gardening shop. There were a lot of weird names here, so she guessed she better get used to it. Flicking her blonde hair over her shoulder with her hand, she made a beeline for the bookstore like the street was being attacked by acid rain. Cassidy pushed the green door open with a little golden bell tingling above her and let her eyes wander; large bookshelves from the floor to the roof; stacks and stacks of books towering precariously that hadn't been put away; stairs to a second floor where more books awaited. It was a mini library and cater she was done admiring it it made her sick. How would she find her books? Were they ordered alphabetically?

She hesitantly stepped away from the door, taking in the quiet chatter and the smell of parchment and old leather binding them all. It was a bit fantastical, but so was magic. She slowly manoeuvred the shop with her list between her fingers, heading to the back of the store to begin her search. Her gaze brushed the shelves hesitantly; the leather bound books looked as if they would turn to dust if she touched them. She witched from the list to the shelves, trying to spot anything, but they all looked the same. One stuck out, though. Her Great Aunt Alice Fraser's book on animagi. She had read it before many a times, inspired by her great Auntie's work. She reached out and grabbed it, longing for the familiar touch. Cassidy flicked it open to a random page and stared in inspiration at the video/picture of the osprey perched in front of the camera, displaying her wings proudly.

As she stared in wonder at the pictures in the book, footsteps began to approach the back of the store where only a few people roamed the shelves. She glanced up from the book to see a girl dressed in relatively normal clothes. She looked about her age. Cassidy guessed she might not be accustomed to wizard fashion, like her in her plain jeans and black coat. She gave a courtesy smile and nod of the he to the girl.

Della began touching each book, overwhelmed by the textures, sizes, and colors. She had no context of what she was looking for or what she would want to look for. The section she now found herself was labeled "Transfiguration," according to a sign on the high shelf. She wasn't sure what it meant, but she surmised it had something to do with transformation. Della imagined that witches and wizards must be able to turn things into other things.

Looking over, she realized that there was another person in this aisle with her. A girl that had to be about her age. She was holding a book, and Della could see even from a few feet away that the pictures were moving on the inside. Was that common? Would that be in every book? Or should Della buy that book today?

The girl looked up, smiled, and nodded at Della. Della then noticed a sheet of paper in the girl's hand. It looked like it had the similar writing and layout of the Hogwarts supply list--Della would know, she had studied it so many times. This girl must be going to Hogwarts, too! Della had a million questions she could ask, but what if she had grown up in a wizarding family? Would she find Della . . . well, kinda lame? A sudden thought came to her mind: what if she was the only muggle-born to attend Hogwarts this year? No one ever said anything about there for sure being others this year, and she hadn't thought to ask.

Della smiled back and did a small wave with her hand. She hoped she didn't look silly or awkward. Were her cheeks starting to redden?

She summoned her courage. Her cousin Marnie wouldn't be going to school with her this year, and she would need to learn to make friends by herself. "Uh, hi, are going to Hogwarts, too?" Della asked, only loud enough for the girl in front of her to hear.

Cassidy watched the girl give a small cute wave to her in return for her slight smile as she began to approach. She looked the girl up and down; hair almost white hanging to her waist; fair skin almost as pale as her hair; simple muggle clothing, like she wore. She needed nervous and surprised at... Her book? Cassidy flashed a glance at the pages she had opened it on, but saw no fault. Then it hit her that she might not have grew up with magic because muggle didn't have videos in books.

“Uh, hi, are you going to Hogwarts, too?” The who she presumed was a muggle-born asked her in a voice as light as snow, as if she was scared of anybody hearing their conversation.
Cassidy nodded, snapping the book in her hand closed.
I'm assuming you are as well, then?”
Cassidy had had more conversations in this Alley than in the last month, most of them with Hogwarts students or soon-to-be students. She was glad she would know a few faces in the school. But just how many other faces would there be? Would it be like her primary school, with only about 150 pupils, or the high school she would have went to had she not turned out a witch, with about 1,000? Or more? Her mum had told her Hogwarts was bigger than the Eiffel Tower, so she wouldn't be surprised if she was met with 1,000,000 faces when she arrived, which wasn't ideal. At least she knew a lot about the wizarding world though.

Then she realized she should probably put a name to this name face in front of her.
“I'm Cassidy by the way, and you are?”

The girl snapped the book shut, cutting off Della's attention to the picture. Della took a look at the girl. She had dirty blond hair and a particularly small nose--the combination worked, she was cute. Della was a bit taller than her, only a bit, and knowing another girl this tall was unusual because Della was taller than girls her age. Her father must have been tall. Della's mom often remarked that Della would probably be close to six feet "when it's all said and done."

The girl wasn't wearing wizarding clothes. Maybe she was from the Muggle world, too? It at least comforted Della a little. Or maybe the wizarding world knew more about the Muggle world than the people she meant so far had led her to believe.

“I'm assuming you are as well, then?”

Della took this as an invitation to have a conversation. She took a few steps closer. “I'm Cassidy by the way, and you are?”

"I'm Della. And yeah, I'm going to Hogwarts, too. It'll be my first year." She hoped Cassidy would say the same. It would be great to know a face at the start, someone else in her shoes.

"What book is that?" Once again Della summoned her courage. She wanted Cassidy to approve of her, but she also knew she wouldn't get by if she didn't ask at least few questions about this new world. "And I don't mean to sound stupid, but were the pictures moving? Is that normal here? I'm from a . . . Muggle family." She let out a small, embarrassed laugh. "I'm still getting used to that word."

I'm Della. And yeah, I'm going to Hogwarts, too. It'll be my first year.”
Cassidy nodded — so Della would be attending Hogwarts as a first year as well. She was quite tall for a first year, but then again she had met a very small first year an hour before. Most the kids in Diagon Alley she had met were first years, maybe there were more first years at the beginning of the school year but some of them left Hogwarts early over the year or maybe all the other years already had their things. She expected other years in Flourish and Blotts, however. Everybody needed new books, surely?

I'm first year as well,” Cassidy replied to Della, giving a slight grin.
What book is that?” Della asked.
Cassidy held the cover of the book up for Della to see — it was a brown leather encasing the pages with gold lettering over the front cover along with a simplistic avian drawn in gold ink.
It's ʼAn Animagi's Tailʼ,” She gestured to the spelling of ʼtaleʼ on the front of the book to let Della know of the small joke. She imagined Alice to be friendly and humorous as she made lots of jokes in her book. She hoped she could meet her sometime.
Its about animagi and transfiguration, by Alice Fraser.”

And... I don't mean to sound stupid, but were those pictures moving? Is that normal here? I'm from a... Muggle family. I'm still getting used to that word,” Della added an embarrassed laugh to the end of her sentence.
They were moving. They're like GIFs, they play for a few seconds before repeating. You'll get used to them eventually,” Cassidy grinned lightly, feeling slightly pitiful for Della. She seemed embarrassed about her roots, while she was sure there were plenty children from Wizarding homes who would love to hear about the Muggle world.
Tell me about the muggle world, I don't know much,” Cassidy added, hoping to cheer the girl up about having Muggle parents.
She was never a master at encouraging happiness as she tended to make things worse, but maybe Della talking about her Muggle knowledge would help her accept it?

Cassidy seemed so confident--and it seemed like she was from wix world. Cassidy explained that the book she was holding was about animagi and transfiguration. Before Della could ask what those meant, Cassidy explained that magic pictures were GIFs and that they were pretty common. Wait, she knows what GIFs are? Is that normal for wixes to know so much about the muggle world? Della and her family know nothing about magic though. How did witches and wizards feel about technology?

Then Cassidy asked about the Muggle world. Della hadn't expected that. There was magic here, why would anyone be interested in her boring life? Well, maybe if she had been born a witch, this world would seem normal and even . . . boring. Still hard to imagine though.

Della took a moment to think. "Well . . . the muggle world seems to be a lot less colorful in most places than the wizarding world. You wouldn't find a street like this street in Britain. . . . I think. I guess I haven't traveled a lot . . . And there's a lot of technology instead of magic. Well, you know what GIFs are, so you must know about that, right? I was told that I can't bring a computer or any of my video games to Hogwarts, so that'll be something to get used to. But I doubt a magical school will get too boring." She let out a small chuckle. Della was surprised she had said so much. It turned out to be pretty easy to talk to Cassidy.

Wandering in Diagon Alley, Ashton and his dad were looking for his supplies. He was gonna be attending Hogwarts and his dad was so proud and happy that he immediately took Ashton to go on a supply run. Shoving his hands on his pockets, he was so tired from going to different stores at a fast pace.

"Alrigh', all that's lef' to get is yer books and then we're finish' for today." Groaning, he hesitantly followed his dad who was almost running at this point to the shop called Flourish and Blotts.

Upon entering the shop, he immediately looked at different types of books there. He won't admit it but he likes to read sometimes. Going to his dad he said or asked, "'Ey dad, is it alright if I go wander off to look at those books over there?"

"Sure, go ahead." Ashton was lucky his dad lets him do whatever he wants. If it was his mom, he would have been scolded. Walking down the aisle and picking a random book to look at, he noticed there were two girls having a conversation.

They were about his age but he payed no mind to them. Even if he wanted to make friends, what will he say? Than suddenly he accidentally dropped the book he was holding and created a loud sound.

Cassidy nodded along to Della as she spoke of the muggle world. She already knew a lot of what she told her, but Cassidy wouldn't let her know that. She was born into a wizarding family, however her squib father and witch mother decided living a half-magical half-muggle life would benefit her as she would have experienced both worlds.

Just as the pastel-haired girl began wrapping up her rather lengthy description a boy she would presume was around the same age of them both dropped one of the hard-covered leather books, creating an echoing boom that ruffled the pages of books nearby. Cassidy quickly whipped around with a blink of surprise, startled by the sudden noise in the rather quiet shop. Her tightened grip on the Transfiguration book she had in her hands loosened as the surprise ebbed from her muscles. It was the boy who had walked into the store with an older man, whom she had turned a blind eye to. The 11-year-old flashed a quick glance at Della beside her, unsure of whether to ignore the boy and his book or say something to him.

“Erm... You okay there?” Cassidy finally said, her voice wavering with uncertainty.

Cursing about 15 times in his mind, Ashton swiftly bent down and grabbed the book that just caused a ruckus a moment ago. Cursing another 20 times when he heard one of the girls voice say,“Erm... You okay there?”Looking to the source of the voice, he was met by a girl with blonde hair and blueish gray eyes staring at him. Glancing to the other one, she has platinum blonde hair. Slightly turning red because of the embarrassment, he standed up and placed the book to its original place and cleared his throat lightly.

It would have been alright to him if they continued to ignore him but now that he was being spoken to, he's more embarrassed than before. "Was I a little too loud?" Ashton said chuckling awkwardly while rubbing the back of his neck using one hand and the other inside his pocket. Ashton most of the time keeps a cool unemotional face but being flustered, he might look pathetic.

He wanted to be sucked by the ground and get his existence wiped off the earth. Oh Salazar. He hopes that he won't bump into them again at Hogwarts if they do attend there.
