Flying was a broad clue but given that there was no clue linking back to an animal, it was clear that a broom would be needed to find the thief. Some students cried out at the unfairness, either because they didn’t have a broom themselves, or their broom was stored back in the castle and would require sneaking back in and out. But it wasn’t long before they would recall that everyone knew where the school brooms were stored. The only struggle there would be to ensure that they avoided making it obvious where they were in sight of Hogwarts’ windows and to use a spell or their own strength to get in through the lock.

Maybe it shouldn’t have been a surprise that when the students arrived at the broom shed, the lock was flung on the ground, mangled. There were brooms that looked as if they had been thrown at random on the ground, as if someone had been searching for something. Perhaps a good hiding spot for the House Cup? That thought occurred to several students, and they spent time carefully reviewing the inside of the shed, trying to find anything that would indicate something had been hidden within its walls. But neither the thief nor the House Cup were located. That would have been too easy, and the thief would never make things that obvious.

A deep cackle broke out from above the shed, and the thief made it obvious who they were as they held the House Cup aloft, gripping the broom with their legs. They were more than a proficient flyer and felt that they had the advantage as they kept themselves out of the reach of most spells. Murmuring under their breath, they moved their wand and shrank the House Cup, shoving it into a pocket of their cloak alongside their wand before they called out, “Prove you truly deserve it! Honestly, I don’t know what they were thinking giving it to you lot. More brawn than brains, I’m sure you can’t outsmart me.” With the words thrown at the people below, the shadowy figure turned and zoomed away, almost out of sight before anyone realized. They followed the shadows of the castle carefully, as if the goal was not escape, but instead to taunt, and evade any who would choose to follow them.

Clamoring for brooms began, rough words and shoves occasionally thrown as everyone scrambled to get a broom and preferably one that would be sufficient to catch the thief. However, it was also clear that the skill of the flyer and their spellcasting would be necessary to ensure that they actually caught them. After all, they had won the House Cup fair and square by working hard, and they would not let that hard work go to waste.

Permission given to use the school brooms and mention the broken into shed given by Professor Ruckus Weems.
Rolls

Rolls: In your post, indicate if you are going to cast a spell, or use physical strength to catch the thief. Spells that can be used are those for Broom Racing and the WDC from this page will be used to determine if a spell succeeds.

Spells will have two rounds of rolls:

WDC – To determine if the spell succeeds

EVA vs. ACC – To determine if the spell lands. Three spells must land in a row from your group or you as an individual to catch the thief. The thief’s evasion is 12.

For those not using spells, two rounds of rolls will also occur:

Strength vs. Strength – Your strength roll must be higher than the thief’s. The thief’s strength is 10.

EVA vs. ACC – To determine if your attack lands. Three attacks must land in a row from your group or you as an individual to catch the thief. The thief’s evasion is 12.
The next mod post for this thread, Stolen Rewards, Encounters at the Edge of the Forest and Hop, Hop, Hop Away will be posted on January 30th, 2026.

t took slightly longer to arrive back at the castle grounds than what may have been strictly necessary. Under the guise of continued ailment from her recent injury at the raking of the Wampus (although it may not have been entirely falsified), Evelynn had subtly dictated the pace such that those who may have desired to skip the continued hunt for the golden trio in the courtyard could have easily followed in their wake. Not that it would likely have been all that difficult to track their footfalls in any freshly fallen flakes, but if given the choice, Evelynn preferred the notion of keeping the entourage at least somewhat proximal in the event that the still-at-large six-legged feline reared its ferocious head once more.

"I still find this entire thing preposterous.." Evelynn bemoaned, raising a palm to shield the bluebell flames she'd conjured earlier into her other hand from sight of the castle. The warmth of the harmless fire was all well and good to keep the chill of the night at bay during their trek from Hogsmeade, but it wouldn't do if it alerted any professors of prefects to their presence. "Why lead us away from the castle grounds only to lead us right back again?"

Cerulean reflected off pursed lips and pensive features alike, casting her countenance an almost cadaverous mien. Rather than towards the great walls of the castle, their path would divert them down towards the Quidditch Pitch. She had not-so-subtly expressed her interpretation of the disembodied voice in the midst of the town square as the crimson mist had begun to dissipate, anticipating--and quite frankly, intending--to be overheard by their dormmates.

"It is obvious that whoever this person is desires that we take to the skies," she reiterated once again, glancing up towards the sky as though half-expecting to see the very culprit. Instead, she saw a pair of pale wings gliding silently overhead. The owl was dismissed without reaction as she continued, "Yet, I now question whether there was any malice behind this entire scheme at all. More and more, it seems as though this was some sort of test. A desire to be challenged." She paused, head canting slightly as she regarded the flames, lost to thought for a moment as though attempting to discern something amidst their immaterial movements. "A cry for attention... perhaps...."

That notion seemed to solidify itself within her thoughts all the more as they came upon the mangled broom locker lock flung dramatically to the ground. Lips pursed disapprovingly. She may have been an ex-seeker and former captain, but her resignation from Quidditch as a sport had not tarnished the respect she had fostered for the tools of the trade. In fact, the sight of school brooms thrown so carelessly to the grown stirred significant vexation within her. She never did have much patience for those who disrespected the care and craft of others. Immediately, she began dipping to retrieve them, fingertips trailing meticulously over their lengths to check for obvious damage to the broom shafts, or preening at their tail twigs to realign those that had been jostled.

And as though to salt that wounded quidditch enthusiast pride, the air rang suddenly with a deep cackle. Snapping her focus up to source the sound, Evelynn spied the scornful swindler. Ire morphed to self-righteous indignation as the stranger slung his slurs, but it did not express itself by verbose hostilities nor haughty rebuttals. Instead, that icy smirk returned, this time accompanied by a sharp exhale through her nose, a sound that could easily have been interpreted as amusement. In some respects, it was.

Although her gaze remained steadfastly fixed upon the point in the sky where the interloper had last disappeared into the shadows of the castle, her head lolled slightly in Marshal's direction. "He has no idea..." Her voice was low, melodic, almost drawling. Whoever this thief, it was clear they were poorly informed. Not only was Evelynn one of the brightest pupils of her year (and very clearly lacking in brawn), both she and Marshal were excellent flyers. "I really ought to have brought my satchel..." She lamented, not for the first time that night. Those familiar with her would know that she routinely kept her Silver Arrow on her person, tucked away in her enchanted shoulder bag. But she wouldn't bemoan her situation long. The culprit was getting away and her prey drive was nearing inconsolable.

Excitement for the chase prickled the hairs at the back of her neck, knuckles tightening about the shaft of the school broom she happened to have in hand. If it was a challenge the thief wanted, she was more than happy to comply. He would get more than he bargained for. She had every intention of exercising the skill of creatively strange and unusual punishments that she had honed during her years of prefecthood; to make him rue the day he dared deceive the lions' den.

Still, she wouldn't risk putting her life in danger and forced herself to focus, attention fixing to the broom to ensure it was undamaged and balanced. Only once she was certain that it would serve her well and not be a liability in the air did she command it to heel. Stepping onto one of the foot rests as it lofted languidly into the air, she turned the hint of a sly grin upon Marshal, the glint of a fine black wand twirling in one hand. "Shall we bring us back a trophy?"

Frankly, Marshal wasn’t sure who Evelynn thought she was fooling. Between her uncharacteristically boisterous recommendation of where they ought to search next and the lackadaisical pace at which she moved, it wasn’t exactly a secret to him that she intended for their fellow lions to tail them. Perhaps the targets of her deception were, in fact, those now left in their wake, and the ruse was meant to draw them back towards the castle without alerting them to that plan. After all, simply telling them to follow may elicit suspicion of an ulterior motive, but allowing them to believe their presence was unexpected would likely rouse curiosity.
As for him, Marshal would not be fooled by the stratagem. He’d spent countless hours with the devious lioness years before, entirely too many to not understand the patterns of her existence. As such, the subtle shifts to those patterns would not go unnoticed. For better or worse, he knew Evelynn, and he knew her well.

He declined to bring it up, however, content to leave her machinations unchecked. There was little sense in addressing a plan he had no desire to change. Furthermore, to voice his thoughts on the matter would risk being overheard by anyone on their trail, and thus derail his companion’s scheme. So he played along.

He raised an eyebrow to her musings. He agreed that the entire endeavor was rather preposterous. In a matter of short hours, the lot of them had been drawn from the safety of their dwelling, enticed to the edge of a dangerous forest, dragged clear to Hogsmeade, and now found their path coming full circle as they trekked back the way they had originated. Eve had quite nearly met her demise, the two of them remained caked in her drying blood, and their junior classmates may still be suffering assaults from violent vegetation. All for what? Some prank? Or was this an attempt at something malicious after all?
Evidently Eve no longer thought so.

”But what would they stand to gain from this, if their intention wasn’t to directly cause harm?” he wondered in return.
”A cry for attention… perhaps….”
He glanced her way. Blue flames cast her scrutiny in somber contrast, shadows cavorting between pinched features in a way that made his gaze linger, if only for a moment. Pulling it away, the lion looked warily toward the castle. The structure loomed like an immense beast, numerous windows flickering with inner light, appearing as eyes in search of those students it had lost. He wondered just how many eyes were watching from within after all, and shoulders hunched instinctively to make his figure smaller, as if that would make a difference.

He hadn’t had much to say since their departure from Hogsmeade, lost in thoughts of his own; thoughts of the past, of what might have been, of what could have been different. The amount of what-ifs was overwhelming, painful even, and he was almost grateful for the distraction when they stumbled upon the ransacked broom shed.
He watched a moment as Evelynn retrieved discarded brooms and fussed over their state, then opted instead to pan his gaze over their surroundings, attention keen for a potential culprit — and potential danger. As he did so, it was moments before the cackling voice broke out that he spotted a shadow, descending through falling flakes to hover in the air above them. He noted the house cup in the stranger’s grip, and where it was stowed once shrunk to pocket-size.

The Gyffindor’s honest reaction to the taunting words was a snort of laughter, as he considered the irony of who stood beside him in light of the ”More brawn than brains” comment. It was rather perfect, honestly. She possessed quite the opposite in both respects; a mind more capable than most Ravenclaws, and arms that rivaled the bulk of a noodle.

Eyes were drawn to that very person as he heard a similar sound of amusement to his own. Again he saw that predatory glint consume his companion’s pupils, yet this time he returned her insidious grin.
Countless hours of training flooded through his mind, many of which had been shared with the very person who now took up a broom once more at his side. The ex-beater rolled his broad shoulders, neck flexing to one side, then the other, as a familiar pulse of adrenaline awakened instincts drilled into his muscles. His heartbeat quickened in nervous excitement much the way it once had before a match, as he gripped the shaft of an undisturbed broom in the shed. Its form did not fit seamlessly in his hand the way his own broom did, didn’t form with his being as if becoming just another limb the way his Firebolt seemed to; but it would serve its purpose.
”They’re no Silver Arrow or Firebolt,” he said matter-of-factly, ”but somehow I don’t think we’ll have a problem.” That smirk survived on upturned lips, wand appearing in his hand, one leg thrown over the nondescript school broom.
"Shall we bring us back a trophy?"
Chin lifting in a clandestine nod, he answered, ”After you.”

Evelynn was determined to help those who struggled with the previous clue. She and Marshal had been lucky, and she wanted to pass on that luck. However, she also wouldn’t just go along quietly especially given they had already done this trek but in reverse. Arriving at the correct area, she wouldn’t know that her guess at the thief wanting attention was the right one. While it would be nice to know the motivation, that wasn’t what mattered, and Evelynn was determined to bring the House Cup back. Maybe for the glory, maybe the pride, but whatever it was, she would not let the thief go without a fight. Mounting the broom, she made sure she held her wand tightly, familiar with it’s weight as she kicked off. Carefully following the thief, she observed them, trying to determine a pattern. When Evelynn felt confident she could successfully hit the thief, she raised her wand, casting the Hurling Hex. It landed, and the thief struggled to keep their seat as their broom ran away like a wild bronc, bucking and turning every which way. It managed to flip them, so they were dangling from their broom, but soon after the Hurling Hex wore off, and they were able to pull themselves back astride the broom. But it had taken more than a bit of energy for the whole incident.

Marshal certainly was willing to debate the thief’s motives out loud. After all, it wasn’t like there was anything to do at the moment. It took little time to make their way back to the castle and Marshal was right with Evelynn in her goal of taking back the House Cup. Ever the gentleman, he let Evelynn kick off first, following her and the thief as they flew. Almost as if they were in sync, Marshal waited until Evelynn had cast the Hurling Hex, and the thief felt confident that they had withstood the attack before launching his own. Perhaps that would throw them off their game. Carefully aiming, Marshal raised his want, going with the familiar as he once more cast Immobulus. Grinning as the thief froze, he did his best to get close before the charm wore off. Unfortunately for him, he underestimated how long that would be, and so before he could steal the House Cup from the thief’s pocket, the thief snarled and said ”I don’t think so!”, quickly flying away.

𝔙ery little time need pass once the pair of them were airborne before regret began to creep in. If the chill winter's night had been problematic on the ground, it became a foe unto itself once astride a broom. Slight breezes howled at the higher altitudes, gnashing and snagging at her meager layers like wampus had before. Damp patches of blood froze solid. Ears and nose burned like frostfire until they couldn't be felt at all. Fingers stiffened around the shaft of her broom and the handle of her wand until they became leaden and lethargic. It became very clear very quickly that time would not be on their side. Should she and Marshal have any hope to detain the thief, they would have to exercise brutal efficiency.

It was with some relief, then, that her temporary ally hesitated not at all before joining her in the sky to pursue their quarry. Old instincts kicked in then. While it wasn't exactly commonplace for her to fall into pursuit of another player, it was habitual to chase after a snitch. And really, was there much of a difference at a distance between the subtle silhouette of a distant adversary and that of an elusive snitch? If anything, the former was far easier to track. They may not have reflected the occasional glint of gold, but their flying was far more predictable. Moreover, given the larger target, they were easier to corral.

Without really thinking about it, she fell into a modified Pincer, relying on Marshal to play the second party of the maneuver, the pair coming in on opposite flanks to deter lateral escape and herd the unknown pupil into a more desirable line of attack. And without the same limitations of Quidditch's ruleset, opportunity would present itself far earlier than otherwise.

"Iacta." Short, simple, and not requiring any complex lip movement, the incantation was an easy one to utter despite the numbness gradually taking over her face. And fortunately, the wand movement likewise cooperated as moment's later their target found themselves contending with a suddenly contentious broomstick as it made every effort to buck them from its seat. Unfortunately, despite even a moment where the shadowy rider found themselves momentarily inverted and barely hanging on, they managed to stay aloft, their skill at sticking to their seat outlasting the effect of the spell.

"You cannot be serious..." Brows furrowed, lips crimping with disappointment. It would have been so much more convenient had the spell cleanly unseated the individual, leaving them vulnerable to her intended follow-up spell to lower them to the ground and restrain them there. At the very least, however, they had managed to gain on the individual during their moment of turmoil and Marshal was quick to follow up her assault with one of his own. It may not have been a legal move in Racing, but its effectiveness was undeniable. Rendered frozen midair, the thief's inability to retaliate or escape for that breath of time allowed the lions to close in further, sort of.

Every now and then, Evelynn would be reminded that she rode upon an old school broom, one whose age she likely couldn't even begin to guess at even should she find herself so inclined. As if in protest to the cold, or perhaps simply because it bemoaned her demand for its performance after hours, a shudder would occasionally wrack its way from tip to tail and she would find her gaze momentarily dropping to the dull and worn polish of its handle, fleetingly worried that it might attempt to emulate the recent action of their opponents' broom and try to buck her from its spine. "Just a bit more..." She wasn't in a habit of speaking to objects, but given the temperamentality of certain ones of the enchanted variety, it certainly wouldn't hurt. If only she had her Silver, though. The thief would have been caught before they ever managed to get twenty meters from the broom shed.

Unfortunately, despite the success of Marshal's cast, it wouldn't quite prove enough to overcome the deficiencies of their narrow steeds. Once more, the thief would seem to shake off their attempts to deter him before they could close the distance in its entirety. It was all fun and games until the tables began to turn. ”I don’t think so!” The snarl in the thief's voice carved an amused--if a bit frost-stiff--smirk across Evelynn's countenance. Flippant joviality had been replaced with hostility and near enough as they were to hear the intonation of his voice, it was clear that the thief was not enjoying the chase quite as much now that Evelynn and Marshal were proving capable combatants.

"Oh, but I do," came Evelynn's purred reply. At this distance, she could make out the reflection of stars in his eyes, the way his frame jumped to put as much distance between himself and his pursuers as possible. Time was growing thin for him, and she could taste his growing apprehension. For all his audacious claims of Gryffindor's lack of brain over brawn, he certainly wasn't demonstrating much of an alternative. His continued flight wasn't exactly strategic in so much as a desperate attempt to outpace them. It was almost disappointing, really. Had it been warmer, she may even have allowed this little charade to continue, to let the little mouse scurry about, to be pounced upon with sheathed claws only to be let loose again with reinvigorated hope.

But as it was, Evelynn as cold, and sore, and fighting the occasional wave of light-headedness whenever her path should turn just a bit too sharply. "Time to put you down." The growl of a promise reverberated in her throat as she rose her wand aloft once more--"Orbis"--then swept it straight down, with every intent to bury the rat in the ground below.

To the skies, then. After watching Evelynn take her leave of the ground, Marshal had followed suit, kicking off the earth in a practiced motion. His acquisition of altitude did not come as smoothly as he was accustomed, however, given how the somewhat gnarled broom shifted from one side to the other. He could almost hear the wood groan in protest as it was forced from its slumber.
The flier longed for his Firebolt, whose ever consistent patterns seemed to mirror the will of his heart, and whose acceleration left his current situation rather underwhelming as the school broom lurched forward. It wouldn’t have been his first choice, and he couldn’t help assuming the thief had an advantage in equipment, but he and Eve held advantages in skill and numbers.

The sixth year instantly found himself wishing he’d brought a heavier coat than the hoodie he wore. The outer layer fought in vain to ward off the frigid breeze, more intended for autumn weather than flight on a winter’s night. He hated the cold, yet had rushed to leave the castle without a second thought even for a pair of gloves.
Bare fingers now permanently frozen to the broom shaft and wand around which they curled, Marshal found himself less eager for the game than he had been moments before, yet still fell easily into formation with Evelynn, recognizing her intended strategy on instinct.

Words would have been a reduntant exchange for a pair with as much experience as the two of them shared. Glancing sidelong at his companion, Marshal was taken by yet another flashback, wherein he saw her younger, and the sun shone upon their collective efforts. She had served as his mentor in a number of subjects, with flying one of the few in which he’d been a natural. Back then, he’d been a newly minted beater, and she a seasoned seeker who captained the Gryffindor team alongside one Rafael D’Spacito (miss you, Rafa). Marshal and Eve had been inseparable at the time, with private quidditch practices numbering in the many. Those sessions returned to him now, and for a moment it felt as if no time had passed.

Spells, of course, were not cast during a quidditch match, which made this experience more akin to the newer sport of broom racing. While Marshal had taken decidedly less quickly to the art of spellcasting, Evelynn’s mentorship in that regard had improved his ability dramatically, along with six years of regular schooling. These days, he was no slouch.
Their target proved difficult to track among the gloom and flurries of snow. Through squinted eyes, the young man could just make out the form of billowing clothes here and there, allowing him to continue the chase; yet the figure remained vague and uncertain, making him hesitate to cast.
As fortune would have it, however, his companion possessed a more keen eye than he. Scoping out her prey with a hungry gaze, the lioness lashed out, and the wavering figure ahead took the impact of the blow. Instantly its movements became erratic, unpredictable, bucking to and fro like a pent-up bronco. The violent motion made the thief easier to distinguish through falling flakes, and more so as their momentum was slowed, allowing those in pursuit to close in.

Marshal watched hopefully as the stranger was thrown from their broom, though disappointment ruled when they grasped its length and managed to remount.
Even as a curse emerged from Evelynn’s lips, the second in chase would launch an assault of his own, taking advantage of the shortened distance and the thief’s vulnerable state. ”Immobulus!”
Perhaps he lacked creativity (perhaps he should take the ability Statistically Relevant), but for the second time that night, the freezing charm would land from the tip of his wand. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Triumph rose in his chest as the fleeing figure simply stopped in its tracks, suspended unnaturally in the air. The ex-beater would lean forward, buffeted by ice and wind as he sought to end this chase. It was at that moment, unfortunately, that the school broom detailed disdain for the agreement they’d reached to get this far. Apparently misinterpreting the forward shift as a sign that he wanted to go down, the broom shaft shuddered before dropping several feet. Catching a gasp of shock in his throat, Marshal yanked upward on its handle, managing to coral the rogue instrument before he plummeted to the ground.
Equilibrium restored, the lion cast a glance where the thief had been frozen the previous instant, only to find empty space and a scathing ”I don’t think so.”

”Stupid broom,” the Gryffindor growled, no such qualms as Eve against insulting the magical object.
As was the case with essentially anything that breathed defiance, Evelynn appeared to take the thief’s words as a deeper challenge.
Marshal threw a wary glance her way, recalling what she’d been through tonight, and just how much blood she had lost. His hoodie was frozen solid where her blood remained, and soon his body would be too, but greater concern lie with her. The longer they were in the air, the more her already worn frame would wane. He was prepared to take action were she to pass out and tumble from her broom.

Clearly in agreement that this chase needed to reach its conclusion, Evelynn brandished her wand once more, uttering an incantation that was new to even him. And with authority.
He would watch as the spell shot from her wand, prepared to follow up with another of his own, only if hers were to fail.

Evelynn and Marshal were on fire! Their skills on the notoriously beaten up and sometimes uncooperative school brooms was a testament to their experience, never mind their spellcasting. They had clearly worked hard in their years at Hogwarts, and it showed. The thief may have been successful in escaping defeat, but Evelynn and Marshal were determined to take them down.

Following the thief with confidence, Evelynn waited until she was confident, he was in the right radius as he made a dive closer to the ground to avoid the two. Pointing her wand, she cast Orbis, watching as the ground opened, and the thief was sucked in. Trapped, he groaned and moaned.

The thief eventually managed to wiggle their way out of the ground, moving quickly away from it. Diving deep in his other pockets, he pulled out more house cup looking items. Laughing maniacally, they said “You thought I would make it easy? Not a chance. You might have the real one, or you might not.” The thief shrugged, shoving the house cups back into his various pockets, before summoning his broom and jumping back on, ready to take on whoever came after him. Those who followed may be tricked into believing the thief still had the House Cup.

The next mod post for this thread, Stolen Rewards, Encounters at the Edge of the Forest and Hop, Hop, Hop Away will be posted on February 13th, 2026. Even though Evelynn and Marshal have successfully gained a House Cup (and currently unbeknownst to them, the correct one), the thief is determined to cause more mischief. Mod posts will continue until March 31st.

ard work and perseverance didn't always pay off. To assume as much would only spell disaster. Evelynn had learned early on during her years at Hogwarts that pressing forward despite barriers to the contrary could--and would--end in tragedy. While a certain amount of endurance of hardship and frustration was necessary for growth and learning and overcoming challenges, the ability to recognize when a situation was more than could be handled and turning back was the next appropriate action was more than just a boon. It was a necessity for survival. Of course, it didn't always mean that acknowledgement came easily.

Such was the case now. As the ground opened, rising to swallow her intended target, a thrill of excitement jolted through her core. The thrill of the chase and capture always did have a way of dulling whatever cold or pain or other distracting irritation might be clawing for her attention. In the moment, only the hunt mattered, however, and through the combined efforts of Evelynn and Marshal's maneuvering and clever spellwork, they had managed to detain their quarry without too much difficulty. Perhaps answers might finally be had.

In her haste to obtain them, however, the fact that it was upon a school broom and not her Silver that she rode slipped her mind. Delayed in listening to her command to sweep back down towards the ground, she overcorrected. When the broom finally decided to obey, it jarred suddenly downward, throwing her balance more forward than it ought to have been. The ground came up more quickly than expected, forcing the senior to pull up her leg and tuck her shoulder. Though she ultimately managed to roll gracefully (not really) back up to her feet, the bail wasn't without its consequences. Frozen ground wasn't exactly the most absorbent of landing surfaces, and the impact, however glancing it might have been, still managed to knock the wind from her lungs.

As the broom skittered off to eventually come to a rolling stop somewhere at the edge of shadow, Evelynn stood dazed, her expression and posture caught in that uncertainty of not quite knowing what had just happened, how she had managed to ultimately land on her feet, or if there were any new injuries. In fact, it occurred to her in that moment that it really didn't feel like she was standing at all. Her feet were numb, her hands like blocks of noncompliant ice, and her head swam in a fog she was quite certain didn't exist. But she fought through it, pulling from her experience with duelling to push through the discomforts and rein in her attention on what mattered.

Partially buried, the thief still struggled in the ground. He'd managed to free on arm, but they still had him captured. She moved forward slowly, deliberately, with every effort to make it seem natural lest Marshal raise concern once more and reignite the push to withdraw. Still, each step felt as though she were standing on nothing at all, as though her her legs simply ended at her knees. It was such an obscure sensation, but she pushed it to the back of her mind, focusing instead on the questions she intended to pose: who was he? How had a Wampus been brought to Hogwarts? Where had the toadstools and bulbs come from? When had he stolen the trophy? Why had he stolen the trophy? What was the purpose of this farce of an escapade?

Evelynn rarely forgave, and she certainly didn't forget. Especially not when it came to those who dared put others--particularly the younger students for whom she still considered herself, as a senior student and ex-prefect, largely responsible--in danger. Trophy be damned. She couldn't care less for the superfluous object that exchanged the hands of houses a half-score times over the course of the year. The only trophy Evelynn cared for was the one she intended to collect from the thief's head. If she could have her way, a lock of hair would be the first thing she would take from him. His dignity, the second. The features of his face and whatever characteristics of his attire she could make out would be carved to memory, likely to be studied again in greater depth at a later time.

"No." Before she had been able to close the distance, the perpetrator had managed to wriggle his way free in defiance both her intentions and best cast magic. Any attempt to hasten her stride, to cut him off before he could escape again, were rewarded with clumsily slipping in the snow. His laughter mocked her efforts; his words slashed at her pride. Desperation would lead her to the first thing that came to mind as the thief somehow summoned his broom: destroy his means of escape. "Exp-- Ex-- Exp."

Unfortunately, it was just a little too late. Lips frozen, they refused to be manipulated sufficiently to enunciate the spell, allowing the thief to jump back onto his broom and speed uninhibited back off into the night, the memory of his laughter echoing in her head. Reflex had her moving to pursue, thoughts launched forward with the intent to retrieve the school broom and take off in chase once more. Reality would have other plans. Legs like lead, they failed to keep up with thought, her pivot quickly ending with hands and knees buried in powder, chest heaving with exertion as though she just couldn't quite get enough air. Every breath ached, the cold air like daggers in her lungs. She couldn't feel her feet. Couldn't feel her face. Nor even her hands. She couldn't even be certain she still held her wand until she pulled her hand from the snow to see a fist as white as carved marble clutched around it.

Her time was up. She knew it. She didn't even have to lift her gaze in search of Marshal's to know he would know it as well. Yet she did anyway. No words would pass her parted lips, but the silence would be enough to relay her final acquiescence to his earlier wish to return her to the castle.

While they generally sport tawny-beige fur, Miss Decipio's animagus form has light auburn fur with sandy-grey underbelly, chest and facial markings. Black-brown fur marks her ears, face and tail (as pictured). At 53 kg and 2.24 m from nose to tail tip in length, she measures slightly above average for a female specimen of this subspecies. We're leaving together, but still, it's farewell
And maybe we'll come back to Earth, who can tell?
I guess there is no one to blame
We're leaving ground
Will things ever be the same again?

What in the hell? Why was he still wanting to go after bloody chocolates? With a sharp grumble, he turned his tail back towards Hogwarts and almost as if there was some sort of a humiliating taunt from the fool who seemed to declare war on Gryffindor, he half-listened to what was said. Something something something sky, something something something castle, something something something fly. This had to be at one of three areas at Hogwarts; The Quidditch Pitch, the grounds where one would race for whatever broom racing was, and the other part of the grounds where Flying class was hosted.

He took off running, picking up speed, partially glad that it wasn't a complete uphill run like it was from the forbidden forest to Hogsmeade. With a pained sigh, he made it to where flying class was at supposedly. Now, Vlad was a prodigal at this subject, but whoever said that he went to class was lying, he knew this stuff so he didn't want to show up and hear the same thing four times. Nay, seven times. Nay, not even that, a thousand times.

He looked around, sure, he saw other students, but he didn't care about them. Tonight was all about himself! Well, that and Vlad needed to get some advantage or something on people, yet he saw someone that seemed to falter or something. He wasn't sure what was going on, so he aimed his wand towards her and cast the hottest spell he knew, the second Firemaking Spell. With a quiet utter under his breath, he cooly and calmly spoke the incantation and made the wand movement, "Incendio Duo."

With any luck, she'd be set on fire and maybe whatever was wrong with her would be fixed. He was applying what he learned from Koldovstoretz! So hopefully, no one would be mad at him. (Granted, he was selective and didn't actually pay attention.)

It's the final countdown

His next incantation died on numbing lips, their posture slightly ajar as Evelynn’s spell found its mark, driving their thief — broom and all — out of the sky and to the earth, who opened its arms to receive him in a crustal embrace. The sixth year, having witnessed this spell for the first time, admired his companion’s handiwork for several moments from his lofted position in the sky, looking down on this petty bandit; this fabricator of games of which he thought himself the master. Had this truly been his plan? To leave a trail for Gryffindor’s best to follow, then simply hope to outmaneuver them in a battle for the sky? What, exactly, was the purpose of that? And was he truly foolish enough to believe it would end in any other way than this?
Soon they would have these answers. And a house cup, he supposed, but frankly he cared little for the object.

A triumphant grin was cast in Evelynn’s direction, but it would go unseen, as the lioness was already diving for the ground. Marshal’s brow creased when he noticed the degree of her descent, and the speed at which she traveled. It was instantly clear that something was wrong.
His concerns were granted credence when she met the icebound floor with a muted thud.
The entombed thief immediately forgotten, Marshal urged his own broom downward, fortunate enough to be defied only by a shudder as the thing carried out his request. Perhaps it sensed the end of its arduous flight, eager for the rest it had earned through old age. As the young man’s boots hit the ground, he doubted whether the broom would rise again if he tried to force it. Abandoning the now inanimate object to the snow, he started toward Eve, but found her on her feet.

”Eve?” he questioned cautiously. ”You alright?”
There was no response; only footsteps as she advanced toward her target — the one he’d forgotten.
Adrenaline pumped through his veins, seeming to charge the air around him while he studied the seventh year. It was a good sign, of course, that she was walking, but something about her seemed off. Perhaps it was in the eyes, in the way that predatory glint shown more dully than before. Or perhaps his hesitation stemmed from earlier that night, when he’d seen her stand after the Wampus attack. He’d turned away then, and it had cost precious time. He wouldn’t this time.

His hesitation here, however, would cost them something else. The sound of crumbling earth registered a moment before his realization of what it signaled. His attention whipped to the thief, where the mysterious character threw a leg over his broom, free of his earthen prison and emboldened to further taunting. A huff of weary exasperation escaped the sixth year, head lolling to one side. He really was growing tired of this escapade.
Another spell that he might utilize jumped to mind, but Evelynn was quicker to the punch… or she tried to be. He heard the girl’s weak attempt at an incantation, saw her collapse through the corner of his eye.

Honestly, what was wrong with him? As the thief disappeared once again into the night, he wondered how his focus could truly be so challenged. And yet he knew exactly how, as Evelynn looked his way, a rare look of defeat scrawled across her features. The inevitable could be postponed no longer, and even she had come to accept it. Perhaps this mystery could be revisited at a later date, but for now she required safety, warmth, and-
A new figured appeared on the fringes of the night. Its size suggested a student, the point of its emergence indicating a trek from Hogsmeade. One of the younger students, having tracked their path from the village.
Seeing the arrival as an opportunity to get help in shepherding Eve to the castle, as well as coax another student to safety, Marshal opened his mouth to call out, but stopped short when the wand appeared. It wasn’t aimed at him. He wished it was.

Marshal was unstable.
Not in general. He’d endured stints with a shortened fuse, certainly, drawn by any number of emotional stimulus, but there was a notable difference between being quick to anger and his current state. Namely, self control, or some semblance at the least.
It couldn’t have been two hours prior that he had lost himself to every bit of suffering he’d endured over the past six years. The carefully crafted mask he’d worn to keep it all at bay had shattered in a single moment, threatening to fracture his sanity with it. And all because this girl now on hands and knees had nearly faded before his eyes.
Now, as flames streaked toward that very girl, bearing down on the one time she demonstrated vulnerability, the boy felt something rip. Like a wound left raw when his mask had hit the ground, the hastily patched laceration split open. And it bled.

He was going to destroy the perpetrator. That slimy, grotesque twit who had dared attack Evelynn when she was down. He didn’t know who they were. He didn’t know if they were in league with the thief. He didn’t care. That could be sorted out once the stain was scraped from the grounds.
It almost felt comical, the absurdity, the suddenness; like the fever dream of a depraved mind. His vision seemed to swim as his own wand lifted, focused on the personification of everything that vied to make his life a living hell. Freeze it first, then end it.
