June 8, 2025 at the Quidditch Pitch
With the final Quidditch games of the year having just passed, and with registration for House teams down this semester, the eight Quidditch captains of Hogwarts were looking for some variety. New blood, fresh ideas - and how best to do that than a competition? Everyone loves a contest! The sweepstakes, the creativity, the excitement - nothing gets blood pumping and interest increased like a good challenge. Plus, the captains agreed that maybe the next great play could come from anywhere: someone who knew a lot about Quidditch, or someone who knew nothing of the sort. And thus, the playbook competition was opened to the public - to any Hogwarts student who may have wanted to have their name scribed in the playbook for the rest of time.

They had set out a variety of materials all over the Quidditch pitch, because of course the best sports ideas didn't come from sitting in a stuffy classroom or hall, but from being in the stadium itself. To one side were all the writing materials - stacks of parchment and bottles of ink in various colours, as well as quills of all kinds and some hard surfaces such as old textbooks (don't tell the librarian) that would ensure the ability to write without nibs breaking through paper. Stacked on the other side of the pitch, underneath the goalposts, were various Quidditch materials - school brooms, Quaffles, Beater's bats, and even a Snitch or two, though only fake, stuffed Bludgers so as to avoid any real injuries from the students present. If anyone present wanted to test out their proposed plays before writing them down to submit, the airspace at the pitch had been cleared, so they could take to the skies and try out their ideas.

The captains themselves floated from station to station, providing assistance where necessary, though none offered up any ideas for plays - the creativity was to come only from the students themselves. (If you would like to interact with a specific captain, please reach out to them via owl to get their permission.) When students had completed writing out their plays, they could hand off their parchment to @Koko Riddle or @Avery McCall, who were staying by the exit to collect the plays for a later vote.
Please copy the following form for your play. Please note that the pre-existing bolded words in the form do NOT count towards your 200-word minimum for the play. We recommend writing more about your play's intended goal to meet the minimum!

While Harlan was in Germany, his grandmother had taken him to Heidelberg Harriers games and that's where he learned of his love for Quidditch. He loved Broom Racing more, the idea of spell casting and brooms, but Harlan wasn't the type to turn away from an opportunity to strategize to help the abysmal performance of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team against Slytherin. He hadn't the space to talk with how they did against Ravenclaw. It seemed as though Dueling this year were the lion's best sport.

He sent an owl to Damien, the kid he had met last summer during the Ministry's Bring Your Child to Work day once he had connected the pieces and ran into him in the Great Hall.

So while he waited for the boy to show, Harlan began to think about the plays he's seen used both at school as well as professionally.

There had to be something they hadn't considered before.

Harlan was a strategist through and through, but he hadn't wanted to lean into being too reckless. There must've been something with the Keeper that they could do, especially if both Beaters were around to demolish the rest of the team (if they would be so lucky).

With the quill in his hand, he scribbled fiercely some of the thoughts and notes he had begun to think of while he waited.

The sound of shoes on wet soil filled the air as Damien headed towards the qudditch Pitch. He had gotten an owl earlier that morning from Harlan Montgomery a friend he had met at bring your kid to work day at the ministry before he came to Hogwarts this year. They became pretty good friends if Damien said so himself. The owl invited Damien to join him on the qudditch pitch for strategizing new qudditch plays and who was Damien to say no to something so fun!

As Damien was heading towards the Qudditch pitch he had ran into his other friend Cirrus Nam. He figured why not invite him to accompany him at the Qudditch pitch to meet up with Harlan or was a good way to help Cirrus make more friends. As he walked towards the Qudditch Pitch with Cirrus he noticed Harlan sitting down in the grass writing in a notebook. He slowly approached him before tapping his shoulder to get his attention.

“Hey Harlan! How are you doing ? Oh btw I hope you don’t mind I brought my friend Cirrus with me!”He said softly as he looked at him with a friendly smile.

Despite his status as a dueling and broom racing captain, which, don't get him wrong he does love them, quidditch was still his absolute favorite and probably always will be. Though his love for quidditch did not prompt him to immediately sign up and go to the new quidditch event. Aston wasn't scared of the captains or something. They, at least the ones from his own house, always gave Aston a good impression, and they were great quidditch players. No, the hesitancy came from somewhere else entirely, the lack of confidence in his abilities. In quidditch he often just did what the other tell him to, he's been trying to learning from Lavinia in his broom racing captaincy. Overall his strategizing is not his strong suit, academics never were, but with Lavinia graduating soon, he refuses to let him be the person blocking their broom racing team

Aston stepped into the quidditch pitch, not seeing any familiar faces, though he wasn't planning on that anyway. He never really talked much about sports to his friends anyway, probably should at one point. He found a spot to sit and work on the strategy, mostly drawing from games he's watched rather then something he played, as a second string he doesn't have much practical experience. He through some of the textbooks, and this was the strategy Aston came up with.
Play Name: Beckett's strike
Play Type: Offensive
Goal(s): stopping the opponent seeker from getting the snitch while attempting to take the beaters out
Key Player(s): beater and seeker
---
Keeper: Snitch Blocking
Chaser 1: Ally oop
Chaser 2: Blatch enemy beater
Chaser 3: Blatch enemy seeker
Beater 1: Dopplebeater Defense against enemy beater
Beater 2: Dopplebeater Defense against enemy beater
Seeker: Ally oop
Second-String Keeper: Cheer beater 1
Second-String Chaser: Boo enemy seeker
Second-String Beater: Boo enemy seeker
Second-String Seeker: Cheer beater 2
The reasoning behind this play was really quite simple, attack. Aston never payed attention to muggle sports, out in the woods he can't exactly access it easily. But it was odd that a single action could get such a high point right? There was certainly flaws in the sport, and a lot of what they do with the quaffle just felt like its making the game more exciting. If they can get the snitch before the other team the comparatively few points from the quaffle just doesn't feel worth it. Especially in late game which is what Aston intended this play to be for. Beaters are annoying to deal with, Aston knows that, taking the enemy beaters out will always be a good thing for a team, significantly reducing the damage they can deal. Getting the keeper on snitch blocking felt like a good idea to Aston, it was a move he tried to do in his last game. Sure it didn't quite work out but it could've. It works. To be honest Aston doesn't really like the amount of fouls in this play. But seeing exactly how often is it in a game he decided it doesn't care anymore. It is worth the penalty laps.
The name wasn't something he spent a lot of time on, he's always been bad at naming things. Might as well just put a part of his own name on it. He didn't get to test it out, not feeling like there really was enough people, but surely its a decent play. Aston felt it was good, why else will he hand it in? He walked over and gave it to Koko, and sat back down, watching everyone else from afar. He's curious about what people would come up with, what ideas they have.

The boy groaned, cracking a couple veterbraes in in his spinal cord as he stretched his back, reaching his arms in a straining manner. He rubebd his honey colored eyes, letting them fall into the rememberall on his bedside which was now a swirling hurricane of cloudy red. Picking up the orb, he tossed it in the air a few times as he laid back trying to figure out what it was he had forgotten.

Cirrus paused his infernal tossing, realizing how he was making his roommates stir at the rather annoying whirring noise. He then continued whilst stretching out his legs, his muscles tight from the strenuous activities he had put on them just yesterday at the Festival.

That's when it hit him, both figuratively and literally, the rememberall he had been tossing fell straight-on to his face, but he had also remembered what he needed to remember.

He had left his water bottle at the Quidditch stadium during one of his many "expeditions" around campus, having left it behind as it had begun to rain, finding more value in his homework then the bottle at the time.

As Cirrus made his way to the Quidditch pitch he was immediately astounded to see that the pitch was decorated from end to end.

He quickly noted the lack of students in population, it was still very early within the Quidditch event that they were holding is what he inferred. Cirrus estimated that the event was some sort of celebratory competition to mark the end of the school year and the last quidditch game coming to an end.

He shook his head free of thoughts instead making his way to the bleachers and grabbing his blue insulated thermace adorned with Dragon Ball Z stickers of his favorite characters. Cirrus then with his bottle in hand begun to make his exit, that was until he ran into his potions partner. Damien Dragonclaw, who was quick to invite the mousy haired boy to the activity.

The hufflepuff mulled over the ravenclaw's offer, deciding it best to make himself useful rather than going to sleep off yesterday's energy usage. As he followed the wavy brunette, Cirrus couldn't help but realize... He didn't know the first thing about Quidditch, having spent more of his time finding extreme fixation on broom-racing rather than the latter sport.

The boy was snapped from his thoughts at the sound of his own name ringing through his ears as he was introduced to another boy. The other appeared to be a couple years older than them, standing much taller with more pronounced features accentuated with blue eyes.

Cirrus gave a polite nod, before a friendly smile etched across his features sticking his hand out to shake.

"Nice tae meet ye harlan!"

After a bit of silence whilst looking between the two, a question gnawing away inside of him clawd out of his throat to ask.

"sae... Hou did ye twa meet?" The hufflepuff asked before making his rounds to the set-ups, grabbing a couple papers and pencils before taking a seat at the edge of the table.

Avery loved Quidditch. Ever since she had gotten the news that she had been accepted onto the team, things had been great for her. Well, great until everything went wrong at her first match. By the third round nearly all of her team had been knocked out of the sky and the backup player list was becoming shorter. It was only a matter of time before the opposing team went for the snitch.

When it came for Avery to take the skies, she wasn't sure if she was completely ready. Putting her thoughts of dread aside, she tried to focus on the game. Deep down she had the feeling that they wouldn't win. They were already too far behind, and by the looks on the other team's faces, they had a trick up their sleeve.

Her team had fought hard from stoppping the other Seeker getting the snitch, but it was too late. Their attempts lost.

When Avery saw that today was her chance to write a play that would go down in the official books, she knew she had to come up with something. She couldn't stop replaying the events in her head of her first game and what she could have done better. That's when it dawned on her. An idea so crazy that it had to work.

Play Name: Gray's Diversion
Play Type: Offensive
Goal(s): Distract enemy Seeker while Seeker chases snitch.
Key Player(s): Seeker
---
Keeper: Snitch block
Chaser 1: Blatch enemy Seeker
Chaser 2: Alley Oop
Chaser 3: Blag enemy Seeker
Beater 1: Sneak Attack
Beater 2: Bludger Backbeat
Seeker: Alley Oop
Second-String Keeper: Boo enemy Seeker
Second-String Chaser: Cheer Seeker
Second-String Beater: Boo enemy Seeker
Second-String Seeker: Cheer Seeker
The reason behind this play was simple. Distract the enemy. With so many things coming at the opposing Seeker, they wouldn't know what was happening and they wouldn't have a clear way to go after the snitch. Avery knew all too well that this was probably the only way for younger Seekers to catch a snitch against the older and more experienced players. She hadn't really ever watched Quidditch, but her father had told her stories about it. The best way to go after something was when everyone was so caught up in whatever they were doing that they didn't even notice the snitch had been spotted and was being chased. There were many risks involved such as penalty laps, but it was worth the risk. If the Seeker of the team was able to have a clear way to attempt to grab the snitch without worrying about the other Seeker, it was worth the penalties the teammates would face. Those players with penalties wouldn't go down in vain. They would be part of the group that helped lead their team to victory. Regardless of what they did to get there. That's what matters in Quidditch. Get the snitch at all costs.

Be the change you wish to see
in the world.

There was a misconception that Quidditch was the most simplistic of the sports offered at Hogwarts. It seemed so simple in concept: throw the quaffle, hit the bludger, and catch the snitch. The nuances were what made it so fascinating, specifically the ways that these flexible roles like Keeper or Chaser could really change the game with a well-timed pivot. It's why if he ever played, he'd want either roles. Not that he was planning on leaving Broom Racing anytime soon, there was a ferocity to the sport of racing and spell casting that left an impression on the teenager's heart. Besides, he had revenge to seek on those birds for the humiliation his team felt only a month ago.

The pressure on his shoulder had the pureblood curious, eyes leering at the person who had touched him and quickly noticing it was Damien — the boy he met last year during the Ministry's annual bring your child to work day and a friend? He wasn't certain if he met the blonde-haired kid before but he gave a courteous wave at the stranger before offering the grassy area in front of them for the others to sit down if they wanted to.

" Our dads work together, I think. Ministry stuff. We met last year there. " Harlan wasn't sure if Damien had reached out for clout (as he would've done) or what, but he didn't necessarily mind meeting another first year.

" You two dating or something? " The question fell without care as Harlan looked directly at Damien before back at Cirrus. Did he want to make them a little uncomfortable? Perhaps, it was a little devious, sure, but Harlan loved to see how the two of them would maneuver through the question.

The simplest of light work before their real task of Quidditch planning began.

Damien looked at Harlan slightly confused at what he had said. It hadn’t fully clicked yet that he was talking about himself and Cirrus. Are we dating ? But the only one here besides him is me and Cirrus….OH! He thinks me and Cirrus are dating !? On it clicked that Harlan was talking about him and Cirrus, Damien quickly shook his head as he chuckled softly.

“No no no me and Cirrus are just friends! We met due to being partnered together in Potion class and just became friends ever since!” He said smiling as he was very fond of thag memory as without being partnered with Cirrus he probably would have never knew him.

He sat down and scooted over for Cirrus as he looked over at Harlan. “so why did you want me to meet you at the qudditch pitch ?” He asked him as he knew he had to meet up with him but never fully understood why but he assumed it had something to do with Qudditch so that was all the knowledges he had.

Damien looked over at Cirrus before getting his bag and going through it as he pulled out a little box and handed it to Cirrus before handing another one to Harlan. “Assuming we are going to be here for awhile figured we’d need some snacks”He said as in the box contained two different types of cake that he baked himself, in Harlan box it was a red velvet cake while Cirrus had a lemon pound cake that was made with Vegan ingredients as he remembered Cirrus was a vegan.

Cirrus obliged and sat down on the green turf of the quidditch stadium next to the other two boys. Nodding at Harlan's explaination on the when and how they had met, honestly he hadn't expected to here it happened outside the walls of Hogwarts...

But honestly the world was small already as it was, so narrowing it to just the wizarding world probably helped the odds quite a bit when it came down to it.

"Oh nice! whit branch daes yer dad work?" Cirrus said with curiousity as he dug into his pants pocket and pulled out a small fistful of peppermints, placing it down in the middle of their little triangle. He also popped one into his own mouth, nothing was better then fresh breath in the boy's opinion.

"You two dating or something?" Harlan's lips curled into a devious grin, nothing but mischief sparkling like fire in his eyes.

The hufflepuff nearly choked, the peppermint shooting down his throat as he stifled a couple coughs the best he could, uttering a couple apologies as he did so.

“No no no me and Cirrus are just friends! We met due to being partnered together in Potion class and just became friends ever since!”

"yeah whit damien says, juist potion partners, A juist happenit tae run intae him on the way tae grab ma water bottle," Cirrus stated calming his coughs by clearing his throat. "An also damien isnae quite ma type."

He couldn't help but laugh a little, it was an amusing thought to say the least, and honestly not an uncommon occurrence for the Hufflepuff. Even though he only had a crush on Gekko—

At the production of sweet treats from Damien, full of gratitude, Cirrus thanked the Ravenclaw profusely. It wasn't baked with eggs, something he was highly allergic too, and even the flavor was his favorite one... Damien truly was a good friend.

"Well shoud we start crackin at it?" The boy said eagerly taking the stack of papers and realigning them, dramatically bringing the lead of his pencil down to the sheet. "A dinnae know much aboot quidditch honestly, but na shame i trying—"

Yeah what Damien said, just potion partners, I just happened to run into him on the way to grab my water bottle.

And also Damien isn't quite my type

Well should we start cracking at it?

summary, this thread is happening on JUNE 8TH, 2025, in the MORNING
——— with @DAMIEN DRAGONCLAW & @CIRRUS NAM / wc: 212.

The abrupt backpedaling they both did at the question made Harlan giddy inside, he loves pushing buttons, especially while they both nervously tried to avoid and redirect. " Alright, alright. Not boyfriends, all good. " He held his hands up in jest to help move on with the conversation.

" Wow, thanks Damien. Wasn't expecting anything. " As he opened the box and saw a dark red cake, was this because he was in Gryffindor? He couldn't be certain but was thankful, regardless. " I'll save it for after, but I figure you'd probably want to do this task. You wanted to join the Quidditch team, right? Best way to try is by doing. "

Harlan pulled out his little playbook, various moving lines and sketches that he spent doodling while he was in Germany while watching some league matches with his grandparents. " If all we have to do is showcase a couple different ideas, figured you could look in here and use one or gain inspiration. Good initiative to show your interest in Quidditch. "

And with that, Harlan began to scribble his own idea of a solid opening strategy of a Quidditch game. He'd stick with Broom Racing, but perhaps one day, he might decide to give Quidditch a chance (if he could even make the team).

Play Name: Null and Void
Play Type: Aggressively Defensive
Goal(s): Remove the beaters from the team while still protecting your own team.
Key Player(s): Keeper and Beaters
Summary: Strategized as a strong opening move for a Quidditch Match, Null & Void is meant to do exactly that and help to eliminate a Beater from the match while minimizing your own team's losses. Ideally, with the combonation of the Keeper & Beater 1's combined effort, it'd be able to remove both Beater's from play and allowing Beater 2 to ensure a rogue beater doesn't activate for your own team. Chaser 1's shimmy is meant to allow your strongest Chaser to have a real chance to sweep the scoreboard with 50 points without the need of your Keeper staying near the goal.

The defenses of Chaser 3 can be used on any of the positions on the team while the Seeker is still searching for the Golden snitch. When used on the first round, the Seeker should be protected by having more priority picks to eliminate in the opening round of the game. This also allows the second string to grow stats collectively with strategize while two of the second string attempt to give +2 or +4 to the member of the team who may needed the boost the most.

Overall, abilities like foulplay and savior would make this even juicier and allows swapping of some roles to ensure the cheat or additional save can be used.
---
Keeper: Blatch Beater 1
Chaser 1: Wollongong Shimmy
Chaser 2: Quaffle Grab & Score
Chaser 3: Save (Beater 1)
Beater 1: Bludger Intercept stronger Beater
Beater 2: Bludger Beater 2
Seeker: Search
Second-String Keeper: Cheer Keeper
Second-String Chaser: Cheer Keeper
Second-String Beater: Strategize
Second-String Seeker: Strategize
