History of Magic! Undoubtedly one of the more complex subjects on the curriculum yet never the less one of the most interesting for Emily. Being Muggle-born was the backbone to that claim, but at the same time it was impossible to satiate Emily's want for knowledge. History of Magic just so happened to help keep her busy with the tumultuous study sessions and homework assignments.
Emily was busy minding her own business, her nose already buried in her textbook for today's pending class before being taken out of the zone by the presence of one of her classmates, who sat down next to her. She was someone Emily had seen every now and then between classes, though she unfortunately couldn't say she was friendly with her. Not in the same way she was with Scout or Emmanuel, or even Aston.
"Have you ever thought about why we study history? It's so, well, pointless, because obviously it's already happened and there's nothing we could change about it after all, so why would we want to learn about it?"
Okay. Emily had to step in. Whether or not that question was directed at her, she couldn't let it go unanswered for the girl sitting beside her. She probably meant no disrespect to the subject but it was clear she wasn't a fan of it. Perhaps the Hufflepuff History enthusiast could shed some positives on the matter...
"Well, without history we wouldn't know where we all came from or how we got to this point in time, would we? We wouldn't know the foundation behind our pasts or the influences towards our future."

Emily wasn't going to deny that she was probably intruding on someone's train of thought. Then again, had it not been for the absentmindedness of the Slytherin girl next to her, muttering out of the blue, she most likely would've been spared of Emily's hopeful outlook on History of Magic... Of all things in this troubled world. While her associate jotted in her notes uninterestingly, Emily's fingers couldn't work fast enough to get down all she wanted to write. Proof enough of how fascinating Emily took the subject in spite of how complex it was.
"Perhaps... The past is always best left alone after all," Emily shrugged slightly, her tone remaining soft and unargumentative as she responded to her. "But don't you want to know how we came to be? How the world got to where it is now? It's a little hard not to be curious, don't you think? Not just with magic, but our society... Our numerous cultures... Even the history of some of our greatest influences in life. It can all be intriguing if you open your mind to it."
Emily tapped quietly along her desk in thought. "Take me for example... I knew nothing about magic before coming here, being Muggle-born and all. So it's only natural I'd want to find out more, yes? To learn the past can help shape the future, as the old cliché goes... But it can also help shape you as a person and how to advance in life. The only way to do that of course, is to learn the past."

Winning Over With History with @Violeta Roux

Ah yes. Ye olde saying. The saying that may have killed cats (which sounded both sad and also debatable), but certainly not Emily. No one could count on both their hands and toes how many times Emily had snuck off to the Forest to explore whilst feeding the inhabitants in the trees and bushes and has come back alive.
Emily's head tilted side to side. She saw the Slytherin's reasoning and it wasn't a bad argument, but she knew she could do more to win her over. She already admitted to having an interest in the past of her ancestors, so maybe that interest could be extended to wider society and global events...
Her Slytherin associate then remarked how she was a Pureblood. Okay... So in all likelihood she knew a bit more about magical history than Emily did. But...
"But wouldn't you want to be curious about Muggle history? I know it won't sway you much to say that Muggle and Wizard society are two sides of the same coin, but perhaps you might surprise yourself over how similar the two worlds are. You know, from the early ally-ship between the two societies and so on? Or maybe even just general Muggle or Wizarding events that are in our pop culture?"
Emily figured she was starting to go off on one of her typical tangents and managed to stop before she got ahead of herself. It was then that the girl sitting next to her surprised her with an unexpected claim...
"You aren't so annoying after all..."
Emily cocked her head sideways again. "Hm? Do you think I'm annoying?"

Hmm... A bit of a stubborn one, this girl was. Though Emily wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. She didn't necessarily seek out to convert this girl into being completely dedicated to a school subject, but to rather shed some light on some of the positives. It just appeared that it would take a lot more than face value to try and prove that to her Slytherin classmate.
But the one thing that really caught Emily by surprise was the sudden interrogation on pop culture. Sure, maybe not everyone could be clued in to the odd reference or two from the 80s and 90s, but with how strongly this Slytherin girl came off about it made it sound like she was taking it as a personal attack. While she quickly simmered down, Emily swallowed, still silently determined to answer the questions this girl clearly had for her.
"O-Oh... Well... Heh, it's okay. I do it too all the time. And if you're really that curious, pop culture is sort of like an informal term for shows, films, music... You get the idea, that are popular and somewhat carried out by people who like them."
Sensing that this girl clearly wasn't too tuned into the notion, Emily sought desperately in her head for a quick and easy example, or at least an argument she could digest and grasp at the minimal level.
"Like... Oh! Like a popular fictional character, or the universe they belong to... Some people might say something a character will have said, or even a real life person that's become a household name. If that makes any sense at all..."
She bit her lip, praying that something clicked with her.
"And thanks... I think... For not thinking I'm annoying..." Though Emily still wasn't quite sure at that last part.

Phew. That seemed to save the conversation, albeit maybe still a little strained after the initial suspicious outburst. Emily kept her smile to herself this time. To say she was intimidated or worried about touching a nerve she wasn't aware she was already playing with wasn't quite the same as what she was actually feeling. Uncertain perhaps? Though she wouldn't pin any blame, especially not on her Slytherin acquaintance now that it appeared she was coming round a little bit.
She looked at her face for reassurance, only to find that it... Wasn't there. Okay... So maybe this girl wasn't at all interested after all. Emily subtly creased her brow.
And that statement about Hufflepuff. That made her crease her brow even more! There were plenty of Hufflepuffs who were delightful! Absolutely not at all annoying! Like Simon. And Gemini. And sweet AngelFyre! She was as good as an older sister in Emily's eyes! Though she would be too shy to admit that to AF's face. And that was only the start. She could already name a dozen more Huffies who were a treat to talk to. In short, Emily didn't have a clue on what that girl was talking about when it came to her fellow house mates.
"I think you'll find that Hufflepuff teems with patient and lovely folk," she finally responded, though it was clear she was struggling a little bit to contain the troubled venom in her tone.
