Camp '22 Summer Duelling Funtime Extravaganza, Match: 5

INTERNATIONAL SUMMER DUELLING TOURNAMENT
MATCH 5
────────────────────────
RULES
This match follows the rules of the Duelling System, with some slight adjustments:
  • There are three parties participating.
  • Players fall unconscious when they drop below 20% of their maximum HP, rather than 10%.
  • The team that has no player left standing first ranks third, the second team to have both players knocked out places second. If two or more teams are still participating in the duel when the 12 round time limit has passed, their placement will be decided by higher total health percentage.
  • Reminder that you cannot use spells of your new year, only spells of your previous year (including any of the new year acquired with a Prodigal ability before graduation).
  • The following spells have received clarification to adjust to the higher number of players and teams: Fumos, Metelojinx, Lumos Maxima, Cracker Jinx, Ventus
    Reducio
Fumos: The smoke affects four randomly chosen, conscious players (can include caster).

Metelojinx: The caster needs to choose which opposing team to summon the cloud over. If countered by Ventus, the caster can choose which opposing team to blow the cloud towards.

    Lumos Maxima: Affects all opponents

Cracker Jinx: The 20% spread chance will automatically affect the target's partner. If that partner is unconscious, there is no spreading effect.

Ventus: The auto-split will target a random opponent from either team (excluding the original target).
  • If there are any more questions, please reach out.

Bridget, being a member and captain of her duelling team, found duelling interesting every time it was played, but the summer games always proved especially cool. Instead of the standard two vs two on a long rectangular platform, you were on a chess board, had more teammates, or, as was the case today, were up against a whole additional team. Today would see a two vs two vs two, Bridget's first time witnessing such an arrangement. There would certainly be a lot more thought going into strategies, and she imagined it would be harder to remain untouched with spells potentially coming from multiple directions and four wands.

Having finished the year tied for points (and with rock-paper-scissors not deemed an appropriate way to decide a winner), both Ravenclaw and Gryffindor had teams today. They would face each other and teams composed of the international schools. The duel Bridget was moderating had duellists from Koldovstoretz and Beauxbatons--would being from different schools impair their synergy? Both of these Hogwarts teams had one captain--Galton and Pericles--and one younger duellist; on paper, at least, that should be a solid mix of experience and uncharted talent. The spectators could place their bets, but there was no obvious power difference like in those unfortunate matches between fifth years and first years. It was anyone's game, would come down to who was targeted more, who could land solid hits, who could dodge best.

"Welcome to the summer duels!" Bridget began; it was nearly time to start. "Can I please have Rodion Makarovich and Eloise Duciel from the Guest team, Galton Lansdale and Kim Sato from Gryffindor, and Pericles Dralt and Sophia Nelson from Ravenclaw?" She had a slip of paper with her to get all the names right, since she wasn't very familiar with the students from the other schools and six names were a few more to remember than four. At least it wasn't ten, like chess combat.

Once everyone was in position, ready to go and clear on any last-minute rule clarifications, Bridget stepped back to her spot on the side. "Alright, good luck. Begin!"

This was it.

The day Sophia'd been waiting for since signing up for the Duelling team.

After some light tutelage at the hands of Gem and Kim in her first year, this was Sophia's first ever chance to actually use her newfound spellcasting confidence. Not only was she going to prove herself and represent her house as best she could, but she would have to cast spells at actual living targets.

The thought terrified her, but it was too late to back out now. This was the reason she'd joined, anyway. To improve her spellcasting and confidence. Even if it wasn't too late, backing out would just reflect poorly on her and her house. Plus, it would be super embarrassing.

After learning she was not only going to be dueling with the team, but dueling in summer camp, Sophia had sought wisdom from wherever she could find it, and she was lucky to have some very experienced teammates. She'd latched onto their experienced minds like a leech, and she was grateful for them all, especially her partner for this duel: Peri.

Her mind was now overloaded with advice, and now she just had to draw upon it as best she could and - hopefully - survive.

That was another fear that lurked in the back of her head. What if she died? What if she killed someone? What if everyone involved got seriously injured because she botched a very simple spell? It was terrifying to think about, but she had to try to have faith that everything would work out.

She took her place and smiled nervously at Peri.

"Fancy meeting you here," she attempted a lighthearted joke to calm her nerves.

She looked toward her opponents and winced as she saw Kim. He was her best friend, so she was almost afraid to win or lose. She didn't want to see Kim hurt, on one hand, but she also didn't want to prove herself a pathetic caster in front of the boy. It was a true 'darned if you do, darned if you don't' situation, and that didn't help with her anxiety.

"Kim!" she called out, masking her nerves with her usual loudness.

"Don't 'spose I could talk you into just giving up?" she asked with a rueful grin.

She took a moment to stretch her back, arms, and legs. She hadn't done anything truly athletic since before coming to Hogwarts, but she could at least loosen up a little before the duel started.

She took a few more deep breaths and waited for the duel to start, watching the referee-lady politely for the cue.

It was early in the afternoon.

Directly after lunchtime. Kim had been busy going about and checking to make sure everything was working.

Being part of the summer camp committee, he felt it was his duty to ensure everyone was having a good time. Also, that no one was feeling left out too. It was a good chance to work on his extreme social anxiety too. Kim wasn't part of the dueling team for Hogwarts as of right now, he was only on the waitlist, although he knew Sophia had gotten herself onto her House team. He'd congratulated her when she'd let him know and hoped one day soon he'd be able to make it on there too. So, therefore, it came as quite a surprise when he heard his name being called by someone.

Or rather, announced, and Kim turned to face the platform where the international dueling summer games were to be held. "Huh?" The lone word escaped his lips, his tone obvious surprise. Wait, why was his name being called all of a sudden? He wasn't on the dueling team! Not that he was complaining about it, Kim quickly made his way towards the rectangular platform and glanced over at his opponents. This was not a normal duel, it was a 2 v 2 v 2 one, not something he'd ever seen before. Unfortunately, Sophia was there too. The setup was explained to them all.

Kim nodded.

Ah, so that was it. It was Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw vs the guest team. Well, this was bound to be rather interesting.

He glanced over at his partner, Galton. Kim didn't know Galton that well, but he'd seen him during the Blossom Ball for the first time. At the time he hadn't known his name but he did recognize his face. After the introductions, he now knew his name too. "It's a pleasure to have you as my partner, Galton. I look forward to seeing how well we can work together." Kim told him, this being completely true. As a higher year, he was glad he had an experienced person with him. It might have been difficult if his partner had turned out to be one of his peers instead.

The dark haired boy looked over when Sophia called out his name. "You better watch out, Sophia! We're a force to be reckoned with. But we'll accept your withdrawal from the duel if you're not feeling too well!" Kim told her with a grin and glanced back over at Galton again. It was time to talk strategies and for that he'd need to confer with his partner. They had many options and little time. The time to talk was now. Kim wasn't familiar with Pericles or the members of the guest team. But it seemed everyone present was a higher year than him.

Except Sophia.

That didn't bode well but at least dueling was all about luck and Kim was a perfectionist, so that should help.

This was what the year had built to. This was what all that blood, sweat, and magic had been for. Galton hadn't suffered flipendo and fire not to be here! His teams valiant efforts had earned themselves a place to face off against some of the fiercest casters the magical world had to offer. And, of course, Galton the Glorious was here to reap the reward. But Galton was not here alone.

No! Galton the Glorious was joined by Kim the Keen! In truths, Galton did not know much of the soon-to-be second year, @Kim Sato, past the glimpses around the house and his team application. But what he did know of the lad, was that this duel would be fun. The chaos of a three team duel! None like it had taken place on Hogwarts grounds before, what wonder would it hold?

He took his place for the duel, scarfing down the last of his marshmallow biscuit. As soon as he could make any sort of understandable sound, he greeted his partner. "Pleasures all mine!" His wand would make its way to a relaxed position, warming up for the magic to come. "Now, biggest tip, try not to get hit. Other than that, just have fun. Shouldn't be too hard." He would give a smile to Kim and then turn to see who he was against.

All but once face was unknown to Galton. He knew the other co-captain, Pericles, but otherwise, they were new to him. That made sense to Galton, since 2 of the 4 were from completely different schools. But, known or not, they looked exciting. It was time to begin. It was time... to DUEL!

London, 2022. The time had come for another duel championship with the almighty Hogwarts’ duelists. No more underestimate, one thing he learnt from last time was the fact that these people were better than expected. As painful as it was to admit, they were really good at magic, too good. He was out cold in early rounds because of those viridian vipers. He could use an excuse that he was only a dumb second year who didn’t know better. His spells were weak, he was slow, and lacked accuracy. But now he improved as well with a new ability up his sleeve. Splitting a spell was not an easy job and it wasn't something any wizard could do. With all the insane practice he did all year long, of course he’d hope for something good. Maybe winning this duel would be a great outcome. He was the Hexwizard champion for merlin sake. He was chosen and these people should stand no chance. This shouldn’t be too hard. He looked at his partner, and smiled. Hopefully she wouldn’t slow him down.

Some students came to Summer Camp for fun. Others sought socialization, a chance to escape their humdrum home lives in favor of freedom with friends. Aside from being picked as a planner for this year's camp, Pericles had one major motivating factor for attending at all: duelling. Never mind the near fatal happenstances that seemed to plague every meeting of the schools. He was deeply devoted to his team, and to the sport as a whole, more so now that he had become rather... withdrawn. The co-captain was something of a recluse outside of practice. His gentle daydreaming nature had taken on a haunted edge. When assigned Sophia as a new partner, he had welcomed her with open arms, and gladly taken to training her. But there was an oddity to his methods. Surely there was strategy, and a kind nature to his teaching. He was never harsh with correcting her casts nor frustrated with any manner of mistake. It was his stance on the sport that was strange, almost eerie, as he always encouraged in his soft-spoken way: "You should never feel guilty for striking an opponent." "Don't hesitate to set your target on fire, even if you are pitted against a friend." "Duelling will prepare you to survive at Hogwarts. Treat it as you would a life-or-death situation... plenty wait in your future here."

Pericles' hiking boots thudded softly against the stage's steps. His pale aspen wand, like a long sliver of bone, was held loosely between dexterous fingers. He was dressed near identical to his teammate with a deep blue tank top, the Hogwarts crest above his chest, and a pair of black jogging shorts with bronze stripes down the sides. Most important of all was the flying eagle pinned to the tank, duellist's wands gripped in its talons. He wore a distant smile when Sophia spoke, a ghost of humor in his hooded eyes as he played along, "What an odd coincidence." He didn't look her way however, first taking in one opposing team, then the other. It seemed unfair that his partner's first ever match would be one so chaotic as to include three teams, let alone the pressure of a tournament, but maybe it would be for the best. Her duels would only get easier from here on out. A thoughtful look slid her way after the bit of banter between Sophia and Kim. Delicately, combining comforting and encouragement, Pericles murmured: "You're going to do just fine. Remember what we practiced." Remember to set your friend on fire.

In typical old-fashioned decorum, the co-captain raised his wand, bowed his head politely to both teams, and widened his stance into the accepted combative position.

Of course Eloise was stressed for her first duel outside Beauxbatons. She was beginning to think it was a bad idea. After all, everything organised by Hogwarts ended in disaster. The balls, the competitions... Especially since the Hexwizard Tournament was taking place this year. The last time a tournament like that had taken place, a boy had died. And Eloise was doing her best not to think about that.
Eloise arrived at the scene of the duel with her wand in hand, trying to suppress her fear. She had the skills to do it. Her partner was a third year from Koldovstoretz. But she had two teams as opponents. The Ravenclaw and the Gryffindor. Two second years, a fourth year and a fifth year. It made her want to quit. But that's not what the Eloise she was striving to be would do. So she would do everything she could to win this duel.

As expected, the three teams quickly exploded into a flurry of action. It was mostly spells, though Sophia had chosen to forego casting and instead give all her attention to dodging. And it was a smart decision, proven entirely justified by the two spells coming for her, but it wouldn't be enough. The spells just had a certain fire behind them, too quick too soon, and Sophia would be rocked by two Knockback Jinxes, one after the other. That had to hurt.

The guest team was certainly gunning for the young Ravenclaw. But Rodion also had his eyes on Kim, wielding the impressive skill of spell spreading to send the jinx at two opponents. Where it nailed Sophia, though, it missed Kim; hitting two people, and especially two people that weren't standing next to each other, was difficult.

As cool as spell spreading was, it would hardly be a rare skill today. Galton was whipping up a Blindfolding Spell, and an especially impressive one at that, while Pericles was calling on the force of the winds. Eloise's vision would darken soon after sending off her Flipendo, the swath of fabric uncomfortably tight. At least her partner hadn't met the same fate.

Pericles would be off to a neat 2/2, catching both Kim and Rodion in his jinx. No doubt the two's ability to avoid this spell was hindered by the spells they'd been forced to dodge just moments before. It was a fairly successful round overall, quite a few solid hits landing. The guest team was perhaps in the worst spot for the moment, one of them unable to see and the other caught in a vortex, but Ravenclaw would have to contend with the fact Sophia had just taken some hard hits that had her looking winded already. And, of course, this was just the first volley of spells; plenty of time was left for anything to happen.

Sophia didn't know what she'd expected, joining the duelling club.

She hadn't exactly expected to become an expert in her craft overnight by any means, but this was a bit ridiculous.

She was quickly learning that watching duellists from the sidelines as they flung spell after spell at each other was entirely different than facing the business end of four different wands of people that wanted to hit you as hard as they could with whatever spells they could manage.

There was a spell on the tip of her tongue, but as the bursts of blue light headed her way, Sophia found herself freezing up and dedicating every bit of her effort to avoiding the incoming jinxes.

Unfortunately, Sophia was never known for her grace or elegance in movement. In fact, as she tried to sidestep the incoming Knockback Jinxes, her horribly clumsy feet betrayed her. As she stumbled slightly in her position, she felt one burst of force push her back and off her feet.

It hurt terribly, but she was no stranger to falling. As if it was second nature by this point in her life - and it was - she rolled slightly and forced herself back to her feet, ignoring the ache in her chest from the impact of the spell. She looked up to try to avoid the other incoming jinx.

...and failed, miserably, as the jinx struck her in the chest once more.

This time, her landing was far less controlled. She landed on her back and felt her head collide hard with the ground.

Sophia managed to - somehow - return to her feet once more, but it was difficult. Her vision was fuzzy and she felt ever so slightly dizzy, but she couldn't show weakness. Not now. She had to represent Ravenclaw.

" 'zat all you guys got?" she called to the foreign students. "I can do this all day!"

Her words were slightly slurred and she felt nauseous, but she wasn't about to give up.
