What a fricking dump...

Casey walked around the streets of Muggle Belfast with his hands in his pockets, regarding his surroundings with the upmost disdain. Belfast was known to be a somewhat greyish industrial town among the locals for the most part. While tourists were sometimes lucky to see the rare but lovely warm sunshine weather during the summer, it was an equal coin toss to witness it in all it's common cloudy and occasionally drizzly appearance. The clouds, to none of the populace's surprise, were quickly rolling in over Titanic Quarter where Casey meandered along the marina. He could see the museum to his right as he walked along the misty grey handrail in front of the row of cafes, the extended block of apartments resting above them while the roar of traffic sounded behind the complex. He could just about see the hotel where he blissfully abandoned his parents whom were still unpacking their bags.

Wizarding background aside, Casey was aware of the Muggle world and some of its features. He had his mother to thank for that. For starts no one had wands or potions hidden on their persons, something which irked Casey. Not that he could do anything with a wand that was essentially loaned to him by Ilvermorny anyway. The second oddity was the use of phones. He'd heard of them but seeing people talk to the air with headphones in their ears, or with an electrical brick to the side of their heads was just bizarre to him to witness. Not to mention slightly ignorant. Casey already had to jump out of the way of three people who were looking down at their phones, pretending like he wasn't even there.

He loved his mother for her affiliation and work as a Muggles expert but...

Goddamn No-Maj society...

Fascinated without a doubt but something about it made Casey think about how tame it felt. No magic. Yet with all the arguable advancements in the world it was hard for Casey to decide if Muggle society was living in the dark ages or not. It was overwhelming yet predictable.

He stopped and looked out onto the marina. He could spot a ferry further down the water while giant office buildings and more hotels mirrored back at him across the bridge. Small droplets of rain stained the ground and Casey sighed.

Does this town ever stop raining?

His parents could've picked Tarragona. Or Amsterdam. Even Australia seemed more appealing than this dreary looking town for a Muggle holiday.

With a hand through his brown wavy hair and his tall slender frame leaning over the handrail to look down directly at the water, Casey stood and watched the gentle rocking of the boats on the docks as the rain got heavier. After trying to evade the rain since he and his parents arrived, he grunted and remained in his place.

Just let the place drench me for all I care at this point.

Rain never kills anyone anyway. Though after a short while he spotted a shadow engulfing his own and all of a sudden the rain stopped wetting his hair. Instead he could hear it hit something. The sound of nylon.

He turned around to find a girl near his height, flashing a shy but warm smile at him as she held a black umbrella over the pair of them. He could see her brown hair shining from the rain, her blue cardigan and plaid skirt laced with rain yet she seemed unbothered.

Casey's face however didn't change. "The hell are you doing...?" he asked coldly.

Though slightly taken aback the girl brushed off his rudeness and continued to smile softly, shrugging gently at his question.

"You'll catch a cold in this weather. Trust me, I've been there...!"

Bundled up in a green cardigan, her long brown hair swaying gently in the wind, her red ribbon entwined with the strands of her hair and standing there in her humble and lovely glory was the assured face that most people would recognise wandering the streets of Belfast like a lost soul and looking for excitement, even on a cold day. Emily.

She stood there with the umbrella over both of them. Her cheeks were rosy from the nip in the air as she remained friendly towards Casey, her smile soft and calm. A year ago she would never be so extroverted, let alone much so that she would willingly go over and offer shelter from her umbrella to someone on a wet day. Had she'd not been away to Hogwarts and undergone so many experiences, she probably would've left him to himself and continued to wander the town with her head down, pretending she wasn't there, instead waiting for someone she knew would care for her company to approach her. Hogwarts had undoubtedly changed her in the time she was there, all for the better of course.

Casey on the other hand was still looking at her like she had just offended him. He wasn't used to acts of kindness from strangers, mostly due to the fact that he was reputable for being a cold, independent hard-ass who pushed others away. Only his parents could understand the display of Casey's withdrawn and touchy attitude.

"You live around here... And you just go up to any randomer you see on the street and give them your umbrella like it's nothing?" He asked a little too judgementally.

Emily stuttered a bit as she searched herself for a response, still distracted by the coldness of the boy in front of her.

"Well... No, not really... But you just seemed so downcast and the rain's meant to get heavier as the day goes on so I thought..."

Casey raised an eyebrow. "So what is it? Pity? Sympathy? Trying to play the good Samaritan?"

"I..." Was it really so hard to offer a few minutes of comfort to someone, especially when they were her age?

Losing his patience over Emily's inability to answer him he turned and began to walk away. Emily's mouth opened to say something but no sound came out. She sighed as he walked off, remembering that she was back home and not at Hogwarts anymore.

Then she suddenly spotted a small slip of paper fly out of his back pocket. She went over to retrieve it and examined it. It was a photo. A recent one. One that had Casey alongside another individual a few years older than him. Emily hurried after him.

"Wait! You dropped this!

With an eye roll Casey spun back round, sporting a less than amused look as Emily came over to him with the photo in her hand.

"The hell do you-"

He stopped dead in his tracks when his eyes fell on the photo that was tucked gently between Emily's fingers. A whole mixture of emotions tensed in him that his face went blank before finally reacting. The photo meant nothing to her but it was everything to Casey.

One of the last few links he has to his brother, Nick.

He immediately snatched it from her without a care in the world for her feelings and quickly buried it back into his jean pocket before eyeing Emily with the coldest stare she'd seen from him yet.

"Hands off!" His voice rose, startling Emily.

"I-I'm sorry, but it was on the ground and getting wet..."

Casey sneered and began walking off again. Emily however, softly tailed him as he paced along the marina, a look of concern plastered across her face. With both of them now aware of the obvious tension between them Casey was anxious to get out of the situation. If it wasn't obvious to Emily, he'd be making it obvious to her now that he hated people. He could feel her footsteps behind him no matter how hard she tried to stay quiet. He was good at ignoring people though, able to tune out their voices and their shadows until they eventually vanish from his space. Yet this girl continued to follow him as if she was a lost puppy and it was pissing Casey off.

"You gonna leave me alone instead of walking behind me like you're on a leash? Just frick off already," He said, his patience slipping as he kept his eyes forward. Why this girl was so persistent to get in his business was a wonder to him and quite frankly he was sick of it.

"That photo...You were in it. Who was that with you? A friend? A family member?"

This girl...!

Casey spun back around and sized up Emily. Being a tad taller than her he leaned over her with a threatening glare, a fist raised by his waist as if he was ready to grab a fistful of her shirt.

"Is rudeness inherent in No-Maj suckers like you or what?!"

An air of awkward silence loomed over the two of them, between Emily's stunned stupor and the beat of realisation that swept over Casey after what he just said. He looked at her face which slowly shifted to one of confusion.

"No-Maj...? Wait... You mean... Muggle?"

Casey blinked. He wasn't expecting that to fall out of her mouth.

Muggle... So she...?

Emily replayed that word in her head over and over again. No-Maj. That definitely rung some bells.

"...You mean... Muggle?"

The pair shared a universal look of shock with each other. They were both wizards. Or at least were familiar with the Wizarding World. It was apparent to Emily by his tone that he was more inclined to the magic world than she was. Nevertheless, the fact that she had just met someone who knew the Wizarding World in her humble Muggle hometown had Emily pulling Casey by the arm and taking him behind the back of a café by the docks.

She spoke to him in a low hushed voice. "You know magic?" Did you go to Hogwarts? I'm sure I would've seen you around though..."

The boy rolled his eyes. "Of course you went to Hogwarts... Overrated pile of rubble. But no, I didn't go there. I went to Ilvermorny."

"Ilvermorny...? I've never heard of it before..."

"Of course you wouldn't. You're just a Muggle-born blockhead."

Emily winced at Casey's words. "So you're Wizard-born...?"

Casey raised an eyebrow. "Hm... Seems you're not a total blockhead... Yeah, I'm Wizard-born. Still, don't you think you're getting too excited over this? All because we happen to know magic?"

Emily was feeling her protest building up. The fact that she would have to spend all summer keeping this secret from others, aside from "Auntie" and her parents - whom couldn't care less about it all - was already driving her insane and the summer had barely started. She was ready to grab the boy by the shoulders and shake him, ready to toss out a barrage of retorts; "Do you have any idea what it's like to meet a wizard in this world? How would you feel about keeping all this to yourself, from your friends and neighbours?" Unlike him, who probably had a whole legion of family members whom he inherited his magical talent from.

"It may not seem like a big deal to you, but it's a lot harder than it seems to manage something on your own. I'm Muggle-born and for a whole year I've tried to cope with the fact that I have magic. Before meeting you, I've been the only person that knew anything about magic... Except for my family, and even then only one person out of it is in tuned to my secret.

Casey huffed ignorantly, prompting Emily to sigh incredulously. She met him at eye level, still trying to sound reasonable in her voice.

"Surely there must have been a time where you felt alone, right? A time where you felt like you shouldered everything by yourself, a time where your emotions seemed to scream at their loudest right?"

Emily caught the blinking glimpse of emotion when she saw his eyes dart away for that fleetingly brief second. It was an indescribable emotion to pinpoint but it wasn't completely removed from what she was trying to tell him either. Perhaps this boy knew what it was like? That's when she saw his hand ghost over his pocket where the photo was kept.

Emily swallowed, knowing that her next choosing of words would most likely cause some kind of effect on him.

"That guy in the photo... Is he important to you?"

Casey snapped and went to slap her, only to change his mind last second and push her away, shoving her until she fell backwards onto the wet ground. She yelped as she hit the gravel and looked up to see Casey tower over her with his darkest glare yet.

"Get your nose outta my business... Before I kick it...!"

He turned and went back in the direction of the hotel, taking his darkened aura with him. Emily remained still on the ground as it continued to rain on top of her. Her eyes fell to the ground, stunned that he lashed out like that yet ashamed that she managed to chase off a potential friend. A reminder once again that she wasn't at Hogwarts, nor among her animal friends back in the wilderness. She almost knew she had it coming when the words she said left her mouth but at the same time... there was clearly something he was trying to keep down.

Emily didn't need to have any spiritual or earthly sense to see that.
