2023/24, Stage 3 Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 2

	In duelling, there lay a thin line between triumph and tragedy. Any offset in contributing factors could swing the pendulum from one side to the other: zigging when one should zag, an opponent predicting one's predictions, a skewed lineup. This would mark his fourteenth duel, seven of which he had won. Most remarkable was his consistent win-loss pattern. The last duel was a roaring success, so naturally, this one was doomed. Aida's attempt to disarm Galton backfired, rendering her wandless. Phaedra's split Confringo was bounced back, both at herself, and at him. What healing he had afforded his teammates was about to be undone. Pericles could only throw up an arm at the last second to shield his face from the blast. By the time he regained his footing, the piste was filling with fog. As the mist engulfed him, he grimaced, teeth flashing and eye narrowing. This was by far his least favorite tactic to endure.

Ouch. Phaedra allowed herself a moment to blink stars out of her eyes and process what happened. On one side, Aida’s wand turned against them. That rarely happened. Even rarer was Phaedra’s typically pierce-happy wand bouncing spells back into her team’s vicinity. It seemed like Phaedra only ever suffered at her own hands during duels, or this was the universe’s cruel way of getting back at her for those game-winning shield pierces before. Pericles’ healing was a small respite among the growing heat of shrapnel and frustration.

The pendulum continued in its swing, its weight shifted towards one side yet the strategy continuing. It was Ravenclaw's turn to be on the defensive, opting to try and recover from the injuries and effects of the previous rounds rather than bring up too many shields. Phaedra would still do so this round, expecting to be the main target as the arced shield bubbled out before her a slight shimmer as it expanded before becoming invisible in front. It wouldn't get any use this round, though, as Aida and Pericles would find themselves the target of spells instead.

Pericles, also seeming to anticipate Phaedra as a main target or wanting the seventh year to see through her last Hogwarts duel to the end, would cast Reparifors on his teammate. Even through the fog he would find the other, but he wouldn't see the spell coming across the piste from Alan. Scratches and bruises faded from Phaedra as Pericles would be blasted with a geyser of water from the Gryffindor's wand, shooting through the cloud to further blind and disorient the duelist as the velocity of each water droplet stung, biting as it drenched him.

Galton and Meenauh, meanwhile, focused on Aida. While the wix had their attention flipping between the wand on the ground amidst swirls of fog and mist and the other side of the piste, it wouldn't be enough as Meenauh cast the Trip Jinx. Aida would have to do everything in their power to not find themself on the floor, spotting the wand but being unable to grab it this round. Galton would take advantage of this distraction, using the extra time to perfect the spell before sending it spiralling towards the Ravenclaw and their center of attention- the ground beneath their feet. Aida would see the entire blast as it crashed into the ground before suddenly expanding up and out to shatter the ground and send pieces slashing towards the Fifth Year. There would be no escaping as Aida barely kept their balance and their wand in sight.

“Owww, you guys, gosh!!” It wasn’t as if Aida were really all that surprised at being targeted during the duel, but the severity of the confrigo in particular was beginning to dampen the white wix’s mood. The duel overall was not going according to plan and it would take some doing to recover from previous rounds. “I won’t go down that easily! My team is strong. Come on guys, let’s turn this around!”

It was always important to remember how to speak to a wand. In all Galton's casting experience, he'd learned that asking (his wand) politely before anything was spelled led to optimal success. Forgetting could lead to disaster, while success could lead to something beautiful. Like this moment. Everything clicked. Mr. Wand was overjoyed by the spell selection and the boy's manners - while the boy felt as if he was moving effortlessly. Syllables rolling off the tongue with such ease it almost broke his trance. And a small squint of his left eye was enough to lock him in on the poor bird he'd leveled his wand at.

With Meenauh's magic his spell would find it's mark. "Glad I still have a year of duels left with you." A quick smile to Meenauh and he was ready for his next bout.

Round 5

Ravenclaw forfeits the duel.

It seemed the gap had grown too much, and with the smoke still covering their eyes and a wand still free from its hand, Ravenclaw decided that it was better to end it now than see this duel to an end. A little surprising, but fair- Lea would raise her hand up to try and grab everyone's attention before Gryffindor could throw the next barrage of spells they had planned.

"Stop!" Thankfully it wouldn't take much to get the attention of everyone- used to paying attention for halts in duels whenever people went unconscious. It was almost a little nice to realize that everyone would be able to walk over to the Hospital Wing on their own without having to be dragged over. She'd take a step forward just to be sure though, addressing both the duellists and the spectators. "Ravenclaw forfeits, thus- Gryffindor wins!"

"Thank you all for the well fought duel and congrats to our Seventh Years especially- please do visit the Hospital Wing or get some healing..." The last of the smoke would dissipate and the wand would be fetched from the ground as both parties were able to rest for a moment. Any bets could be sorted out as they exited, Lea not entirely sure what the final deal had been but hopefully it was something nice.
