The sting of yet another broom racing loss was slowly dissipating as was the imminent memory of cockatrice sear among the Basilisks. It was for this reason that Colin had decided to talk with his captains about brewing up something useful. He just hoped that he wouldn't blow himself up in the process! Loping along the corridor towards the potions lab, Colin reviewed the recipe in his mind and made sure he brought all the right ingredients. Satisfied that he had everything, he pushed through the door and found an empty bench to work at and began arranging his equipment and ingredients.

After adding the murtlap tentacles to his cauldron, he began to carefully chop up the seaweed into small pieces. He sniffed at it. It still smelled like the ocean. He worked the pestle around the mortar, crushing the seaweed with relatively smooth motions. He tossed more into the mortar and crushed it up until he ended up with four spoonfuls.

Colin began to feel a little more confident and he added the seaweed to his cauldron. Stirring thrice clockwise, he set the burner on high flame and waved his wand over it. He knew this had to brew for a while, like a whole half hour or more! He reviewed the rest of the recipe and nodded to himself in understanding. After about forty minutes, he turned off the burner and added a jar of honey to his cauldron.

He stirred that twice clockwise and bumped the burner back up to low for ten seconds. Then, adding two measures of flobberworm mucus, Colin heated that whilst stirring clockwise from time to time until his potion finally reduced and took on a paste-like consistency.

He turned the burner off again and added single sprig of dittany to his cauldron. As that dissolved into the paste, Colin waved his wand over his cauldron a last time. He checked the recipe over just to make sure he didn't forget anything.

Confident that he'd done a good job of it, and relieved that he wouldn't have to use the paste on himself just yet, he filled his potion into an airtight jar, collected up his books and supplies and left the classroom.

Permission to state that older nurse interns are allowed to get Skele-Gro potions started, was given by Dusana

During the slow hours in the Hospital Wing (surprisingly, there were a few despite the unending chaos Hogwarts dished up), the interns were permitted to enjoy the small moments of quiet when they could be found. Xailah often took this time to check inventory and see what supplies would be needed, before the next wave of injuries came flooding through the infirmary's thick wooden doors. Dusana was always on top of her stock, making sure she had plenty of everything in the instance of (inevitable) disaster. Still, it never hurt to have a little extra supplies. Skele-Gro was almost always being used and because of this, Xailah liked to make sure Dusana had lots of backup stock on hand.

Skele-Gro was a tricky potion to keep consistent brews of, mainly because of the time constraint it had: after the first phase of brewing the potion had to be matured under the light of a clear full moon. Fortunately, Xailah kept track of moon cycles (for personal reasons) which allowed her to maintain several successful Skele-Gro starters. A full moon was expected for tomorrow night, and Xailah was keen to capitalize on the occasion.

Finding a secluded corner of the infirmary to work in, Xailah would get some Skele-Gro started by pouring three liquid ounces of ethanol to a cooled cauldron, she then began dicing a Bitterroot to add into the cauldron. Placing a Fanged Geranium onto her cutting board, she crushed the plant against the flat of her kitchen knife, softening the flora for easier cutting. She chopped the geranium into small cubes and separated two measures of it to add to the cauldron. With the flower added, the cauldron was brought to heat under a medium flame while she stirred the ethanol, Bitterroot, and geranium mixture once, clockwise.

Bringing her mortar and pestle closer, Xailah added four measures of Standard Ingredient as well as two bunches of daisy root into the mortar and ground both ingredients together until they formed a smooth, homogenous, powder. With a small spoon, she scooped four measures of the powder from the mortar and sprinkled it into the now warmed cauldron. After the first phase of ingredients had been added, a quick wave of her wand would ensure the potion was ready to brew for twelve to sixteen hours.

When she had the chance, Xailah checked on the what-would-be Skele-Gro throughout the day, to make sure nothing had gone awry during the hours she could not watch it brew. Once time was up, and the potion was reduced into a slightly thicker liquid, she added eight Beetles' Black Eyes into the cauldron; stirring them into the liquid with three clockwise strokes of a spoon. Two sprigs of Jewelweed joined the beetle eyes in the pot before the heat under it was extinguished. Yesterdays forecast had predicted a cloudless night sky with a brilliant full moon. In a few hours time, Xailah would find the prediction was correct. Once she saw that bright orb in the sky, the lioness carefully moved her Skele-Gro cauldron to a window in the infirmary where it would be able to soak up the moonlight and remain undisturbed.

Xailah arrived at the Hospital Wing early the following morning to check on the progress of the Skele-Gro. Much to her delight, nothing had gone wrong during the night. Extracting a singular pair of Fairy Wings from a small glass jar, with a pair of tweezers, she added the small appendages to the potion and stirred them thoroughly into the liquid with four counter-clockwise strokes. The last step was to wave her wand over the potion and leave it to mature for three weeks. Waiting was the easy part, the potion would be done before she knew it.

Potion: Erumpent Potion
Ingredients: 1 Erumpent Horn, 2 measures of Erumpent Horn Exploding Fluid, 2 tablespoons of Sulphur, 3 measures of Flobberworm Mucus, 4 tablespoons of African Sea Salt
Roleplay:
Reducio

Xailah set a clean cauldron on very low heat; while she waited for it to get to temperature, she prepped a few ingredients for an Erumpent Potion. A razor-sharp blade, guided by a steadied hand, cut apart some of the erumpent horn. Four ounces of the severed horn was placed into a mortar and ground into a fine powder, while the rest of the horn was set aside, untouched, for later use. The lioness then produced two measures of Erumpent Horn Exploding Fluid and three measures of Flobberworm Mucus from two bottles, and added both to the cauldron at the same time. She was careful not to stir or mix the ingredients together in any way.

With the mucus and the exploding fluid in the cauldron, she could now add the powdered Erumpent horn to it as well. She dusted the powder over the mixture's surface before allowing the liquids to simmer for five minutes. When five minutes ended she waved her wand over the cauldron and left the potion to brew for another thirty-five minutes, after sweeping her wand over the concoction for a second time.

To fill some time, she cleaned off some of her used utensils while she waited for the potion to finish brewing. The mortar was the most important thing to clean, making sure there was no leftover residue from the Erumpent horn was essential. She flipped the mortar over and knocked what powder she could out of it with the palm of her hand, and onto a small piece of parchment. She'd finish the cleaning with a quick swish of her chestnut wand and a Scourgify.

African Sea Salt and two tablespoons of Sulphur were then placed in the clean mortar and ground together into dust. Lining up a few glass vials in front of her, Xailah prepped them for the potion they would soon hold. She measured out an approximate pinky's worth of the Salt-Sulphur mixture on the tip of a teaspoon and sprinkled it into each vial.

By the time the last few potion prepping steps were completed, the Erumpent potion was done brewing. Steadily, the woman poured the contents of the cauldron into each of the reserved bottles one at a time, making sure every last drop of liquid went into the glass containers. She then waved her wand over the bottles after each transfer before corking them tightly. Once each bottle was filled and secured with an air-tight seal, they were gingerly placed in a chilled box for later use- there was little doubt that this particular brew had yielded... explosive results.

Ingredients: 4 Spines of Lionfish, 2 Measures of Standard Ingredient, 2 Measures of Horklump Juice, 2 “Blobs” of Flobberworm Mucus

The Herbicide Potion was a fairly simple one to make, Draven mused, as he prepared his ingredients.

Four lionfish spines. They were easy. To be crushed into the mortar until they turned into a fine powder, alongside 2 measures of standard ingredient. Draven winced as he dropped the ingredients in the mortar. The cost of potioneering was making him a little ill. The waste that came with it, too, for he only really needed 3 measures of his miscellaneous powder to go into the cauldron. Waving his wand over the thing with a half-assed sort of gesture, Draven set about preparing his ingredients for the other three potions he planned on brewing that day. They were neatly arranged on his board as he waited, the four groups of glass vials set to the side, ready to collect his mixture. Finally, 60 minutes later, he was able to add the 2 measures of Horklump juice into the pot. The fire roared to a medium for a brief 10 seconds. Draven took the opportunity to add 2 blobs of flobberworm mucus. He stirred the whole thing 4 times clockwise and then waved his wand over it. The potion was finished.

He didn't really pause as he transferred the mixture into the first 2 vials, setting it off to cool. (217)

Ingredients: 2 Fire Seeds, 3 Chizpurfle Carapaces, 2 Billywig Stings, 3 Measures of Powdered Graphorn Horn

The second potion would prove to be much more complicated. And much more expensive. Draven had to swallow back the bile that rose in his throat as he dropped his fireseeds into the mortar. He'd washed it first, of course. Once properly crushed, the boy turned his attention to the 3 Chizpurfle carapaces, splitting them open carefully and dropping them in his cauldron. A cauldron which had also been washed, mind you. Five stirs counter-clockwise later, Draven had to pause his cooking to crush up two Billiwig stings. He dumped the whole mixture in his cauldron careful not to waste any, and set the mortar aside. Stirring twice clockwise, he lowered the heat. Another 60 minutes of waiting. Merlin, the wait was the worst. At least it was only the 3 measures of powdered graphorn horn to add. Sixty minutes later, and into the cauldron they went. Draven pushed the flames as far as they could go, counting Mississippi's in his head. Twenty of them. Then off the flame the cauldron went, with Draven stirring three times clockwise and waving his wand to complete the potion.

This one hadn't turned out all that badly either, if he could say so himself. It only made two potions though, much like the herbicide. Bottling the liquid, Draven winced. Two more. (218)

Ingredients: 3 Measures of Firewhiskey, 4 Woodlice, 2 Sprigs of Skurvy Grass, 2 Spider Legs

He was honestly surprised he'd been able to purchase firewhiskey so easily. Especially a whole bottle of it, without getting any sort of questions from the barkeeper. Three measures of it went into the recently washed cauldron. Flames roared to life for a brief 30 seconds, the smell of heating alcohol making Draven's head spin. Which he supposed was the point, really. Reducing the flames, the boy took his chance to crush the 4 woodlice into his mortar. 2 sprigs of scurvy grass followed - it was an odd name for a plant, which was why Draven liked it. The paste it formed had a bit of an iffy consistency, so Draven took his time, making sure the woodlice and plants had properly mixed. Into the cauldron he scraped the paste, trying his best not to make a face at the smell of it. The stirring was getting a bit old, but he did it anyway. Three times clockwise. And then he waited. Again. Another 40 minutes. Chopping the spiderlegs proved to be a lot more painful then expected. The knife was shaking in his hand as he pictured Deimos across his chopping board, the black webber's legs being finely minced. The sooner he could get them out of his sight the better. Into the cauldron. After stirring 4 times counter clockwise, he allowed the mixture to brew for another 5 minutes, and then waved his wand to complete the potion. (240)

Ingredients: 3 Sprigs of Skurvy Grass, 2 Sprigs of Lovage, 2 Measures of Standard Ingredient, 2 Sprigs of Sneezewort, 1 Sprig of Fluxweed

And as the ingredients to the final potion were being set up, his cauldron washed for the 3rd time, and the 2 bottles of dizziness draught set aside, so did the last bit of Draven's money. He'd been saving up since February to buy a tent. In reality, he didn't know why he'd blown all his savings on potion ingredients. A spur of the moment decision, really. A stupid spur of the moment decision.

At least there were no spider legs to be chopped up in this one.

Two measures of finely chopped scurvy grass flew into the cauldron. His leaste favorite activity, turning things into paste by use of the mortar, followed. Two springs of lovage were mashed and mixed in with 2 measures of standard ingredient. It was with a sigh of relief that Draven dumped the noxious looking paste into the cauldron, stirring five times clockwise. Waving his wand, he turned his attention toward washing his tools as he waited for the mixture to cook. Thirty minutes of waiting. He'd had enough waiting.

After 250 degrees worth of heat for 30 seconds, the boy turned down the fire back to a medium burn. Pulling apart the Sprig of Sneezewort was at least satisfying, he thought, as he added it to the cauldron in rough pieces. He stirred once, counterclockwise.

Back to the mortar it was with 1 sprig of Fluxweed. And then in the cauldron. He was getting real sick of potions right about then. Letting it brew for five minutes, Draven finished scooping up his unused ingredients back in their respective containers, and placing them back in his bag. His wand got a nice wash as well, after which he waved it over the cauldron to complete the potion, and bottled up the liquid. Thank Merlin, that was done. (303)

If there was anything, anything at all Astra could do to increase her Herbology grade, she would. With the assistance of Professor Toussaint and Siobhan McCarty a few months prior, Astra had learned a lot about plants and become slightly better? Jinx knock on all the wood in sight.

As such, she had managed to keep four bouncing bulb plants alive until she needed them to complete a potion! Yes, the motivation of making the pumpkin head potion was apparently all she needed to keep a plant alive. Shocker.

Not only did she manage to keep bulbs in their state of living-ness, but she also cultivated foxglove to the point of flowering fruition, four of which she collected today. Two flitterby moths were donated by Roderick, they were part of a colony he and some friends had been keeping for CoMC or something, but they had lived their lives and were now dead and preserved. Well, two of them were going on a potions adventure.

She went down to the dungeons for her experiment, heating up her cauldron to an acceptable heat. She used her mortar and pestle to crush the moths into a pulp and dumped the goo unceremoniously into her cauldron, beginning to stir as soon as she wiped her hands off. Clockwise her arm worked for roughly two minutes, her watchful eye awaiting a green hue in the moth pulp. And green it did turn.

With the flat of a knifeblade (from the potions classroom, Bex), Astra squashed the bulbs with a touch of remorse. Her hard work, her successful cultivation. For pumpkin head potion.

She shrugged and, wiping her mortar clean beforehand, placed the squished bulbs into it and crushed them with her pestle. They too were added to the cauldron and stirred counterclockwise until the mixture (which was looking something like a vegetable stew, she realized) turned red, which took roughly three minutes.

Time for the foxglove, like parsley to the pumpkin head stew. Astra sliced the flowers thinly, careful of her fingers, and slid them into the cauldron like she'd seen her mother do with more people-friendly herbs. Clockwise stir for one minute and then she sat back, eyes on the clock and the potion intermittenly, looking for orange. She spun her wand between her hands. After seven or eight minutes, the potion was the color of a pumpkin. Astra took the cauldron from the heat and waved her wand overtop of it, feeling very proud of her finished work.

Into three phials it went, perfect for anything she needed it for but mostly for her self-confidence, since it was the product of not one but three personal successes. Refreshing change of pace. Great job, me.

Exams were nearly upon them, and while most students would be fixed on the content learned within their current year, Evelynn's exams this year would be a cumulative mess of everything leading up to this point. She'd done well to catch up in the laxity of the previous months, but there was still much to cover. Potions, with their complexity and need for hands-on practice, had been delayed as much as possible, but she could do so no longer. Staunchly set up in the potions classroom, she elected to cover as much ground as possible, to brew as many potions as possible, to ensure she was prepared for whatever may come her way.

In the midst of brewing Dr. Ubbly's Oblivious Unction, she waited, thumbing through the pages of her text to review the steps she had already taken as her standard size 4 cauldron simmered on a low flame. She had filled it half full with water, brought it to a simmer, and placed the crocodile heart within for the 7 necessary minutes already. It now lay to the side on the table, next to the pliers that had safely removed it from the scalding water. A plethora (36) pufferfish eyes had been added, then, and then set to simmer. Temper the Runespoor Eggs; that's what she had to do next. Thus, while the water continued to heat, she got to it, setting them aside when completed.

There'd been plenty of time to study as the timer counted down, the tick tick tick of her mechanical watch marking every second that passed. When is alarmed, she immediately mixed the tempered runespoor egg mixture into the cauldron, careful to stir it clockwise three times, no more, no less; then waved her wand. She would let it cool for a time before bottling it, but she already knew exactly what it would be used for.

Potion #2 | Memory Potion (brews 2 | mental | ingestion)

It was really rather convenient at times, the wizarding world. Evelynn could never really say she particularly struggled with academics, tending to catch on to concepts and process information at an alarming pace. Nevertheless, there were certainly times when her memory failed her, or she had to spend more time than she would have liked to really nail down some information. How incredible it would have been if she'd had access to mind-augmenting potions from an early age. Perhaps she could have been entirely finished her muggle studies by now, able to focus solely on her magical education. That was not the case, however, which only made the potions all the more valuable. Without them, she wasn't sure she would have been able to recover as quickly as she did from the deficit she'd dug herself into this year.

Over the past couple months, she'd burned through memory potions at an alarming rate to help her complete the assignments in record time. For what must have been at least the dozenth time in so many weeks, she sat down to replenish her stocks again. Eight ounces of purified water had been brought to a boil, a Joberknoll feather soon disappearing into its roiling midst. One. Two. Three. A wooden spoon stirred the simple liquid thrice, counter-clockwise, and then she left it there. Thirty minutes, a stewed and chopped up mature Mandrake and a chapter of Best Household Charms later, Evelynn reduced the heat of the feather water to medium, added five ounces of the mandrake to the cauldron, and stirred another five times, this time clockwise.

For the following thirty minutes, she worked on this assignment or that until the potion demanded she add three sprigs of sage that had been ground to a medium-fine powder to the brew while stirring four times clockwise. Three sprigs of finely chopped Galanthus Nivalis went in after it, the heat then turned to high. She waved her wand above the cauldron, then let it brew for an additional hour. It was quite the time-consuming potion, in truth, and one she believed could be a contender for the OWLs, as a late-brew error would not allow time enough to start over. When the timer finally went off, she snuffed the heat, stirred counter-clockwise five times, then waved her wand over the potion one last time to complete the process.

Some potions were quite a bore to brew, simple enough that a muggle could likely craft them with minimal knowledge of the subject. Others required fine, artistic technique, challenging for gifted potioneers, while outright impossible for anyone less. And then there were those potions that were nightmarish in their craft. The Invigoration Draught was one of those, and if Evelynn hadn't grown to rely on it to supplement her limited hours of sleep to allow sufficient time to catch up with near a year's worth of neglected work, she would have happily deferred with its continued crafting.

The mandrake was the obvious disconcerting aspect of its make. A cauldron sat over medium heat, filled two-thirds with roiling water. Next to it, a potted plant. They were difficult to deal with on the best of days. One slip, and it could be unconsciousness--or worse. Her earmuffs were already well in place, but she checked them again to be certain. She steeled herself, reminding herself for an untoldth time that it was a plant, not a creature, repeating that sentiment again and again as it cried itself to silence once yanked from its comfortable earth and was subsequently submerged in boiling water where it was left.

Switching over to the cauldron, she poured in a bottle of honeywater, then added roughly chopped scurvy grass and peppermint. She stirred the mixture four times clockwise and waved her wand above it. As it simmered, she took the mandrake from its pot and diced it into small chunks, its flesh crumbling easily as she did. It wasn't until the cauldron had been simmering for 18 minutes that she added the sliced mandrake to the developing brew, alongside a tablespoon of Wormwood.

And herein lay the true annoyance of the potion. Already, she had invested 45 minutes, excluding initial table and supply preparation. The cauldron would simmer now on reduced heat for the next hour and a half. Following that, she would stir twice counter-clockwise, then add a tablespoon of Vervain Infusion and four Billywig Stings and stir twice clockwise. Then it would be 45-65 further of continued simmering until its aroma billowed powerfully out from its depths to an overpowering degree. Only then could the wand be waved to complete the process. In total, this equated to an absolute minimum of 2 hours and 50 minutes invested to create the potion, though could easily go well over 3 hours. It was a ridiculous endeavour, one that limited its craft to weekends unless a pupil had no extracurriculars and didn't mind fasting for a day.

Brewing had always appealed to Evelynn. There was a systematic methodology to it. Like chemistry. It did not require one to be particularly powerful in an arcane sense, nor adept at casting. Instead, it was an art in and of itself, requiring finesse, understanding, patience, and a certain level of adaptability. Evelynn found it challenging in a relaxing sort of way. But there existed aspects of it that she certainly could do without, such as the butchering of certain necessary ingredients.

Nevertheless, it had to be done. While a pot nestled comfortably over a flame to bring it to medium-high heat, Evelynn butchered the snake. Off went its head. Out went its fangs. From the incision to its belly, she was able to strip off its skin and remove its innards. After thoroughly cleaning what remained under cool running water, she sliced the meat into small chunks and tossed them into the pot. They sizzled and crackled immediately, and the lioness had to take care that they didn't stick to the sides. She wrinkled her nose. As they browned, the aroma of cooked serpent filled the air. While not entirely unpleasant, neither was it particularly appetizing. She took a sip of wine to veil the aroma before dumping its contents into the pot with the browned snake.

Once it was just starting to boil, she reduced the heat to a low-medium. Silver strands of hair were dropped into it one by one. She watched as the four unicorn hairs spiraled with two slow clockwise stirs of the contents. The spoon tapped gently on the inside wall of the pot before being set off to the side. A heavy lid settled with a quiet clattering. It would have to simmer like that for twenty minutes. There was plenty of time to get some studying in. Even after having to chop some sage, adding it to the pot once the timer had gone off and leaving it to simmer a further 10 minutes, she was able to review a full chapter of charms.

Off came the pot from the heat then, grey mitts protecting her from scalding, and set aside to cool. While it did, she prepared a cauldron over medium heat. Through a sieve, she poured the developing potion, careful to ensure no piece of snake meat managed to get past. Only two billywig stings and the two snake fangs she'd harvested earlier could be added to the liquid, lest all of it be ruined and the tie for naught. She stirred again, counter-clockwise this time, and thrice, then waved her wand over the potion. And then the tricky part began. She had to leave it sit for exactly 17 minutes, which meant monitoring the time very carefully. Allow distraction for even a moment and it could mean the ruination of nearly an hours work, and more importantly the loss of precious ingredients.

By the time the timer had sounded, Evelynn held three petals to hover over the brew ready to release them at the precise moment needed. They fluttered down to its surface, falling upon the surface like little boats on a sea of blood. As tempting as it might have been to assist their descent further, she resisted. To do so would spoil the potency and effect of the potion. So she sat, absently watching as they gradually swelled with absorbed fluid, tipping to take on more, and eventually slipped beneath the surface to submerge out of sight. Finally, with a contented breath, she waved her wand to seal the magic within and bottle what she'd crafted, relieved to know there would be restful sleeps ahead of her again.

Paranoia or academic interest (or perhaps just the need to have something to do with her hands), it was not quite clear what had caused Méabh to be awake at five in the morning, picking through her storage and personal collection for the ingredients to brew an antidote to Veritaserum.

Swift fingers combined the snake oil with morning dew in a clean glass bowl, setting them aside only when they were properly emulsified. The same fingers moved with practiced ease to slice the leeches into uniform strips, before dropping them into the cauldron that had been heating on a low flame as she worked.

The scent of the cooking leeches might have made others grimace, but Méabh's face was impassive, even thoughtful as she picked up the glass bowl and gradually poured its content into the cauldron, the clock on the wall ticking evenly as she alternated between pouring and stirring clockwise every quarter minute.

Once the liquid had all been stirred into the potion, she switched direction and hand for eleven counterclockwise stirs, bringing the potion back into balance. A sprinkle of cinnamon, just enough to coat the surface, and Méabh went back to bed for another hour... it was still rather early, after all. She would only check in again to wave her wand over the brew and extinguish the fire before she left to start her day; it would have to cool down, anyway.

Later that day, she returned to the room but lit another fire, the first part of the potion finished and waiting. She stoked that one a bit higher, but still rather low, then set a cauldron on it to heat while she measured out the armadillo bile and powdered octopus that would start off this part of the potion. Twenty-one stirs to incorporate the powder into the bile, carefully counted; it was easy to lose track if you didn't pay attention.

Skinning Erumpent tails was annoying, finnicky work, but twenty minutes were plenty of time to get it done before she could add it into the potion, followed by a wave of her wand.

Now all that was left was to combine the two parts; pouring the first half into the second cauldron slowly, then boiling it swiftly and letting it simmer for five more minutes before extinguishing the fire beneath it. Another wave of her wand, and the potion was done. Who knew what she'd need it for?

Méabh yawned as she pushed open the door to her office, and wondered for a moment why she was always brewing her potions late at night or early in the morning. Because she loved it, was likely the answer, so that was what she spent her free time on. She'd set the Billywig stings to steep in ethanol earlier, before she'd gone up to dinner and then gotten caught up chatting with a colleague.

The prerequisite hour was easily past, and she quickly mixed the finely ground red pepper with cranberry extract before she lit the fire below the cauldron and evenly sprinkled the red powder into the alcohol. Twelve minutes were plenty of time to shred the boomslang skin and bouncing bulb into fine strips, and Méabh let her mind wander in the meantime. It had been an impulse decision, brewing this particular potion. One born of regret, of longing, emotions she'd thought she had rounded off with, sparked back into life by none other than Méabh's least favourite nurse (@Dusana Sabo).

Returning to the present, Méabh grabbed the strips in her right while she started slowly stirring the potion with her left hand - counterclockwise, seven times, as she let the strips drop into the cauldron. All that was left was to stoke up the fire, then, one by one, pluck the petals off a daisy and let them flutter down into a cauldron. Oddly fitting. She loves me, she loves me not, she loves me...

The fire was extinguished with a whispered spell, then waved her wand over the cauldron in a fluid motion. The vials were already waiting.

Méabh hummed, sitting on her desk, legs crossed, and kept an eye on the students while she methodically crushed two dragon claws into a fine powder. This one wasn't entirely for her own amusement, as she thought it might be nice to show the sixth and seventh years some more advanced potions. Not teach them, mind you, but just... tickle their curiosity a bit. Hint at what potions could do, why it might be worth to consider a career into that direction. And she did have time to kill during her classes, when the kids were busy with their own brewing; third and fourth year classes particular, when the students were competent enough to not need constant supervision so they didn't blow themselves up, but the potions were still relatively simple.

She added seven carefully collected Jewelweed flowers to the mortar, then proceeded to crush them into a smooth paste with the dragon claw powder. The cauldron was already heated to medium heat, and allowed her to scrape in the paste along with a measure of bdellium without having to set down the mortar. A quick survey of the classroom to make sure nothing was on fire - at least nothing that wasn't supposed to be - and Méabh began the maybe most sensitive step of this recipe: Stirring, switching hands depending on direction, a total of seventeen times, with no interruption.

Thankfully, nothing exploded before she was done, and she dropped a generous handful of beetles into the cauldron when she was done, followed by two fanged geranium heads. Almost done now - the protective gloves were already jammed through her belt, so she just had to pull them on before swirling the cauldron three times in a practiced motion. As she was used to, she poured in the frogspawn in the same direction the potion was already swirling, then set down the empty container on her desk and started making a round through the class to check on the students' progress. The potion would take 99 minutes to brew, by which time the next class would be sitting on these seats.

She managed to get the next group of students busy discussing the answers of their homework assignments just in time to put the finishing touches on her potion; adding half a measure of salamander blood, then another eleven minutes of simmering. Finally, a smooth wave of her wampus wand, and it was done. She smiled, a spark of mischief entering her eyes. She likely wouldn't need all of it for demonstration... and there was a certain someone she hadn't annoyed in a while.

Potion | Antidote to Common Poisons

For the third night in a row, AngelFyre found herself in the Prefect’s Bathroom. She had everything laid out before her on the warm, woolen blanket and had just finished an inspection of her equipment to make sure everything was clean and in proper working order. A quick glance at the recipe confirmed she had all of her ingredients lined up in the order she would be using them in the brewing process.

She picked up her mortar and pestle and set them before her while grabbing the bezoar with her other hand. She tossed it into the mortar and took great pleasure in the process of crushing it into a fine powder. She did notice the gravelly sound of the pestle grinding against the thick, granite of the mortar’s interior echoing throughout the cavernous bathroom. The action of grinding was quite soothing, but the echoing left her feeling a bit lonely in the moment. If she were not brewing this potion, she would be in her private dorm room in Badger Bungalow. She never felt lonely there, but it was a smaller space. The amount of space in this space only punctuated for her just how alone she was here, and for about the 15 millionth time, she wished Simon was nearby. That was always a given though, so she continued on.

She carefully added her 4 measures of the crushed bezoar powder to the cauldron and then added 2 measures of the Standard Ingredient into the cauldron as well. She cast an Incendio to light her burner beneath the cauldron and heated the two ingredients for 5 seconds on a medium heat. She slipped her wand into her hand and waved it over the concoction, crinkling her nose in mild disgust. Bezoars were no lilacs, that was for sure. She set her wand down and started her alarm clock which had been pre-set to go off after 35 minutes of brewing time.

While everything simmered, she read ahead to what she would be brewing the following evening: a burn healing paste. It would be the last of the four potions she would be gifting to Simon for his next, inevitable stay with that coven of vampires his ‘father’, Adrian, surrounded himself with apparently. Since he had been so badly injured on his last visit, AngelFyre wanted him to go in as protected as possible this time. When the alarm went off, she was engrossed in her studying, so it made her jump a bit. Relief washed over her as her heart rate began to slow to normal once again.

Next she added a single pinch of unicorn horn to the brew and stirred 2 times in a clockwise direction, wiping her fingers off on the linen cloth sitting atop her crossed legs. Her thoughts on the unicorn horn were mixed. She was remembering her joyful encounter with Catori, the unicorn Simon had arranged for her to meet after their Christmas break last year, and she prayed that, as advertised, the unicorn horn actually had been “ethically sourced”. To know otherwise would be a deal breaker for her in brewing this now, or ever.

She was almost done now. The recipe said to add the 2 Mistletoe berries into the cauldron’s brew and stir it exactly 2 times in a counter-clockwise direction. She did as directed, and all that was now left to do was to wave her wand over the cauldron and imbue the liquid with her magic. When she saw it immediately turn to that distinctive, beautiful teal color, she knew she had a successful brew.

She then carefully poured it all into the three glass phials and stoppered them up. As she let them sit to cool for a bit in their carrier, she quickly scourgified her equipment and then put it all away in her enchanted satchel, in preparation to head back to her dorm room. Once they had had a chance to cool off, she would seal them with melted beeswax around the stoppers and label them. That, however, was a job for tomorrow morning, more than likely, as she tried, but failed, to suppress a long yawn.

Potion | Starry Sky Solution
Ingredients required | Star Grass, Snow Drops, Roses, Wine, Silver Powder, Dragon Blood, Unidentified Blue Powder

Roleplay (559/200) |

With all the seriousness that end-of-year exams, detentions and Quidditch games held, Koko found herself wanting — no, needing — a break. She went on more runs, ate more sweets she liked, even resorted to doodling in her notes a few times… but nothing worked.

So she went back to reviewing old notes lackadaisically, and one potion in particular caught her eye: the Starry Sky Solution.

It seemed easy enough, and it wasn’t even too difficult to compile the ingredients, even if she’d had to send a few owls to family members and do some searching. Once she had everything, she set up a small station in the Potions classroom and got to work.

She picked up three roses and removed their petals almost absentmindedly, humming to herself as she set the stems aside, dropping them and watching them fall into a small bag she had prepared for them.

Then, she cast Incendio and waited for the cauldron to heat to medium-low heat. She uncorked her bottle of wine and measured 8 fl. oz. of it, adding that to the cauldron before doing the same with dragon's blood. Still caught in her thoughts, she stirred clockwise three times before measuring out one measure of silver powder and adding it to the mixture.

Potionmaking was therapeutic, she was deciding as she added two measures of unidentified blue powder. There was something about it that was almost as soothing as a cup of tea or a good jog. The tune that had been stuck in her head changed, and she stirred the concoction six times clockwise. A small smile, this one slightly different from her resting smile, fixed itself to her lips as she let it simmer for two minutes. She closed her eyes and sighed to herself, but this time, her sigh was contented.

She reopened the bag of rose petals and added them to the potion. She glanced at her watch, noted the time, and got to chopping up the star grass. Five minutes later, she added the star grass to the potion. Quietly mouthing lyrics to a new song, Koko stirred thrice counter-clockwise. After that, she glanced at her watch, and noting that she had thirteen minutes, she took a glance at the Herbology homework that she had brought with her. She read some of the reading and answered a few questions before the time was up.

She added four snow-drop stems to the potion and reduced the heat to low. After that, she had thirty-three minutes left, so she decided to continue her Herbology homework while keeping track of time on her watch. Once she'd answered a few more questions, she checked her watch again and noticed she only had two minutes left. She waited that amount of time while carefully watching the potion, and then she waved her wand before transferring the cauldron's contents to vials.

She would carry it all to her dormitory and set the vials on her nightstand while she waited for the potion to mature. That way, she could keep an eye on it in the morning and at night, and whenever she went through her things. She watched the potion daily, and then weekly, not feeling the slightest bit discouraged when it took a bit longer than she expected. Eventually, the liquid in the vials began to resemble the night sky.

Potion | Bruise removal paste

Roleplay (200 words min) | WC: 552

It had been quite the day, lots and lots of rain with little hope of it stopping. This meant that Mylo hadn't been able to go outside and do the drawing they wanted to do, but it did mean that they had time to brew a potion they'd been wanting to try out. The Bruise Removal Paste, it was something that could be immensely useful in day to day life and that could be carried in his pocket and taken out when needed.

Stepping into the potions classroom they started to get themselves ready to brew, having their notes next to them and all the ingredient's ready to go. Getting their cauldron out he put it on a medium heat, heating it up for 10 minutes as the instructions told him to do. Then getting out the 3 murtlap tentacles he needed, quite interesting things, and adding them to the cauldron. Along with the jar of honey, that quite frankly they'd had the fleeting thought about that they'd rather be eating it than adding to a potion. But the reminder of what potion it was quickly steered those thoughts away.

Grabbing their spoon he stirred the potions clockwise 5 times, double checking to make sure they were actually stirring clockwise. Reading their notes to check what the next step was he got out their gloves and took the cauldron off the heat putting it down on the cooler counter.

Taking out the Bubotuber pus he measured out 2 fluid ounces and added those in, stirring 3 times again, this time only counter-clockwise. After which they put their gloves back on and put the cauldron back onto the fire. Immediately starting to heat back up. Waving their wand over it, hoping to everything that it would work. Reading the next step he was happy he'd brought his book, as they had to leave the potion to simmer on low heat for 60 minutes. Lowering the heat they checked the time and sat down in a corner, still keeping an eye on the potion but being able to read further in the book they'd brought.

Noticing that they had about 10 minutes left until the 60 minutes were up he got up and started preparing the last few ingredients. Getting out the 6 sea shells and crushing them up, making sure to make them a fine powder. They also got out the 2 measures of Flobberworm Mucus, which they had to search for, somehow having misplaced the ingredient, and giving themselves a slight panic. Eventually finding it as the 60 minutes finished.

Adding in 3 pinches of the sea shells powder and the 2 measures of Flobberworm Mucus they heated the potion back up and made sure to keep stirring the potion. Eventually it reached a paste consistency, and had a lovely yellow colour. Waving his wand over the potion to finish it off they took the cauldron off the heat and let it cool down, not taking too long.

As the final step they took out four of the airtight containers they'd brought, adding the paste into the 4 containers and screwing the lids shut.

Very pleased with the fact that it had appeared to work they put the pastes back into their bag and started their accent back to the common room.

Potion | Burn Healing Paste
Ingredients required | 3 Murtlap Tentacles, 4 spoonfuls of crushed Seaweed, 1 Jar of Honey, 2 Measures of Flobberworm Mucus, 1 Sprig of Dittany

Roleplay (200 words min) | WC: 467

Another day, another potion. Mylo had recently brewed some bruise removal paste, and since then hadn't had too much time to brew another one, but having finished everything school wise, they decided to go down to the potions classroom and try another potion, hoping it would work as well as the last time. This time wanting to try the Burn Healing Paste.

They'd found out the potions had quite a few ingredient's in common, so it was easy to find them and get them ready. Starting off they added the 3 Murtlap tentacles into the cauldron and he chopped the seaweed into small pieces. They tried it before, but it'd never really tasted quite right to him. Finishing off chopping the seaweed he added it to the mortar and pestle and crushed it to a paste, continuously adding more so that they had enough to add 4 spoonful's to the cauldron.

He might have been to precise with this as it took a bit too long, but eventually they had enough. Which he added to the cauldron with the Murtlap tentacles. Stirring clockwise 3 times. Having done that he set the heat to high and waved his wand over the beginning of the potion. Grabbing their book, which they had nearly finished and letting the potion to brew for 40 minutes, keeping an eye on it but hoping to finish the last few chapters and finding out what happens in their book.

The time went way to quickly, but he had finished the book! It did mean that they could get back to the potion, grabbing the honey on his way over. Once back at the potion station they turned off the heat completely and added the entire jar of honey stirring twice clockwise afterwards turning the heat back on this time low and let it sit for 10 seconds, counting in their head and grabbing the flobberworm mucus. After the 10 seconds they added the 2 measures of Flobberworm mucus to the cauldron.

Heating the potion they made sure to occasionally stirred clockwise until it had a paste like consistency, at this point it was really quite thick as well and they turned off the heat.

Grabbing a singular sprig of dittany to the cauldron and potion, waiting for it to dissipate. Once it did and Mylo could no longer see it he waved they wand over the potion finishing it off. Grabbing 4 airtight containers out of their bag and adding the paste into them, closing them and putting them back into their bag. Once again very happy that it had worked, although of course they couldn't be sure until they had to use it. But they hoped he didn't actually have to. Walking out of the classroom he wondered what to have for tea.

Mylo had found brewing potions to be quite therapeutic, following the recipe and knowing that in doing so would result in something they could use in the future to help others if necessary. This fine day Mylo had come down to the basement to brew a potion that he hoped not to have to use, but if he had to it would be quite useful. An antidote to Common Poisons.

Walking into the classroom they started preparing to brew, grabbing everything they needed. Once again also having brought a book for the downtime where they had to leave to potion to brew.

Starting off they added the bezoar to the mortar and started to crush it into a fine powder, whistling to themselves as they did so. Having it at the right consistency he added 4 measures of the powder to the cauldron, watching it drop to the bottom. Grabbing the bag next to him he also added in the 2 measures of standard ingredients the recipe asked for, wondering what it was made of again.

Having gotten the first steps done they looked over to his notes, double checking what he had to do next. It didn't seem too difficult, heating up the cauldron too medium heat he counted to 5 in their head while taking out their wand. Once the 5 seconds where up he waved his wand over the potion and took out their book, leaving the potion to brew for 30-40 minutes.

He'd gotten through a few chapters by the time the 30-40 minutes where up, and he put the book away and continued with the last few steps. Adding a pinch of Unicorn horn to their cauldron and stirring clockwise twice. Grabbing a few mistletoe berries with their other hand and adding those in as well, going back in to stir again this time twice counter-clockwise.

The final step once again meaning that he had to wave his wand over the potion, grabbing 3 of the containers they'd brought he filled them up with the finished potion. Happy with how it turned out.

Potion | Antidote to Uncommon Poisons
Ingredients required | 2 Fire Seeds, 3 Chizpurfle Carapaces, 2 Billywig Stings, 3 Measures of Powdered Graphorn Horn

Roleplay (200 words min) | WC: 414

More and more potions, Mylo had nothing to do this day and had decided to go down to the basement and brew a potion they'd just learnt about along with another potion they'd already brewed. He had taken great care to make sure they knew the exact steps for this potion as the professor had mentioned this one was a bit more difficult to brew and Mylo didn't want to mess up any steps and thus mess up the potion.

Setting everything up they started by adding the 2 fireseeds to the mortar, roughly crushing them and breaking them into pieces. Making sure not to crush them too finely and adding them to the cauldron. The next step requiering them to split open the 3 Chizpurfle Carapaces they had and adding them to the cauldron, so that they did. Wondering every step of the way how much more difficult the potions would get with the years to come, although they had really enjoyed learning about them and actually brewing the potions.

Stirring the potion 5 times counter-clockwise they watched the ingredients mix, stopping after the 5th stir and going back to the mortar and pestle. To which they added the Billywig Stings and crushed them into a fine powder, making sure not to leave any chunks behind. The fine powder also got added to the cauldron, which lead to them once again stirring this time twice clockwise and waving his wand over the potion. The recipe then required them to turn down the heat to low and to let it brew for 40-60 minutes, after which they started preparing the last ingredient. Measuring out 3 measures of powdered Graphorn Horn, and setting that to the side to use later.

Sitting back down in a corner they picked up his book while keeping an eye on the potion, wanting to know what happened next in the story. The time flew by and soon he had to be back at the cauldron, adding the already prepared 3 measures of Graphorn Horn to the cauldron, setting it to high heat and letting it boil for 20 seconds, counting down the seconds in his head.

The end nearing he took the cauldron of the flame and stirred it clockwise 3 times, finally waving their wand over the potion to finish it. Proud of the fact that it had worked they took out 2 of the containers and added the potion to them, putting it back into their bag.
