2023/24, Stage 3 Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 2

It was predictable. It was a textbook case of when to use a shield. But Galton had figured the Raven’s were smarter than that - though in this case it looked like they’d been perfectly logical. It had been a long time since any of the lions had shot spells at the predictable target - he figured they’d know. Pericles had been on the receiving side of some unpredicted shots, word must have traveled, right?

Wrong. They wouldn’t guess any sly tricks from the pride. The safe route was the strong route in dueling. Planning for the worst was always smartest. Just like this last bout. And now the pride looked the fools for it.

Back to the drawing board then.

The non-interesting turn, which had come up in mere seconds — they needed their spells to go through before Phaedra would raise any shield up. But they weren't fast enough. Phaedra was an incredibly experienced duellist that did not play it risky.

It was them who could suddenly go all-in, however crazy their ideas would be.

Once in a lifetime, even a piece of magical wood would shoot, wouldn't it?

A hand rested nonchalantly on her hip while the other summoned a shield. The last time she'd faced Alan and Galton, a rebound had changed the tides for Ravenclaw. No such thing happened now to Phaedra's great disappointment, but as her eyes readjusted to light after Aida's quick untying, she spared a moment to thoroughly look-over her teammates. She was in worse shape than both of them, but if being the big threat kept them standing, then so be it. Phaedra was far used to it now, anyway.

Gryffindor was on the defense this time around. It was fascinating to see how the two sides ping ponged between strategies and techniques, seeming very in line with what the other would do. Just as Ravenclaw had predicted the Gryffindor's target the time before, the lions did the very same as both Meenauh and Galton opted to create that invisible dome before them, prepared for any spells that might rocket towards them. It was a challenge to see anything outside of the way their wands kept still in position without any other spell cast, but that was beginning to be warning enough for Lea to know some rebounding spells were soon to bounce between the sides. Alan, seemingly unconcerned that any spells would fly his way, instead cast Nebulus as streams of fog spilled out to trail over and surround both Phaedra and Pericles. It wouldn't yet cover up their vision, but with how quickly more fog appeared it would soon be an issue.

Aida and Phaedra would go on the attack, while Pericles bolstered his allies. A quick cast of Reparifors and a number of scratches from the concussive blasts they had received the rounds previous would patch themselves as though having never existed in the first place. Aida looked back up to their normal self, but Phaedra would only briefly feel the scrapes gone before she suffered the same wounds again. Her spell split in two, arcing towards the two invisible sheilds of Galton and Meenauh. Unfortunately for Phaedra, Meenauh's shield had been bolstered with no weakness or cracks as it forcefully rebounded the spell to the caster before there was any time to react. The impressive spellcasting from both parties ended with an explosion right beneath the eagle's feet, feeling the full brunt of her power returned. The other beam ricocheted as well, from Galton's shield towards Aida before suddenly angling towards Pericles instead. The turn was quick and despite the lack of control on the spell, it seemed to have a target in mind as it spiraled directly to his feet, the plume of smoke from the blast as splinters flew joining in with the fog from Alan's spell.

Aida, although also aiming towards the invisible shield, would not end up testing its strength as their spell backfired before they could even cast it properly. The disarming charm meant for Galton would instead steal the caster's wand, clattering the chestnut wood to the ground, partially covered by the fog that surrounded Aida's teammates. After toying for control, it seemed as though the lions had grabbed it this round. But there was still time to shift the play if the eagles could find a way to do so...

Suddenly nothing seemed to be going right for the Ravenclaws. Aida's very wand seemed to reject the fight, blowing the wix's expelliarmus back into their face as if to excuse itself as it went for a siesta in the corner of the room.

“What, was it something I said??”

The sandy owl high above shuffled uncomfortably as it watched from its perch.

Sometimes you plan to go defensive, but it turns out that shield can also be quite offensive. And it happened way better than she anticipated. It was quite enough revenge for all the times Phaedra managed to pierce her shields previously. She hoped Phaedra could read her thoughts (not referencing Legilimens, no, nah-ah), and understand that the destiny just decided that it should have happened that way.

Predictability had nothing to do with anything now. It was the destiny that drove that duel.

Alan was excited that this round turned out so well for them. Gryffindor was finally in a clear lead, though he knew to never celebrate early when it came to duelling and to keep his cool. He got himself ready and glanced over to Meenauh and Galton by his side; he was sure in their trios ability to be victorious in this.

They wouldn’t need to go far to truly go “back to the drawing board”. Really they would just take a glance at what had just happened and decide it was the perfect plan. Galton and Meenauh had the same thought, and threw up shields in unison. If you can’t beat them, join them.

And by the graces of Merlin they would reflect everything thrown at them back towards the ravens. Galton knew Phaedra must have felt a similar way when she’d done similar to him a few times. A quick nod to his partners would be all he’d give in celebration though, there was no time to celebrate the small victories.

Through the shield’s shimmer he had almost missed Aida losing their wand. He knew all to well what it was like to have your own wand reject your cast. Mr. Wand had been far less temperamental since their new understanding, but he couldn’t help feel a bit bad for the bird. “Or maybe it was something you didn’t say?” He’d offer his opponent. Mr. Wand always seemed to hate when Galton didn’t say please.
