2023/24 Stage 3 Ravenclaw vs Hufflepuff: Match 5

The Ravenclaw team acted in perfect union. Wands raised, the three of them cast their differing spells at Axyen, poor kid. Cassian felt the power in his Tickling Charm and as he felt the power coursing through his White River Monster wand, he knew the results of the charm would last longer than most. He also saw, in a blinding flash of explosions, that Sam’s blasting curse had been wonderfully cast and executed. Again, Cassian thought, poor Axyen. Almost simultaneously Cassian felt the wind pick up, due to Zach’s ventus charm, but the wind flew wide and missed its mark. No matter. The Ravenclaw team was starting off strong and Cassian was feeling confident in his fellow Eagles.

The result was actually not bad. Both Sam and Cassian successfully hit Axyen. Poor boy indeed. Zach remembered that he was also targeted first in the last duel. If one looked up ‘contrast’ in a wizarding dictionary, they would find this duel. Spellcasting had somehow skidded to a halt for four duellists, and while the other two successfully sent their spells across the piste, Pyxis was starting to realize that duelling wasn’t always going to be about catapulting unhinged spells at your opponents. Cases in point were Axyen and EmmaLee. Both had decided to forgo casting a spell and instead used those precious seconds to hone in on their opponents. It was the perfect choice for Axyen who was still hanging on by a thread. Cassian was prepared to finish the job that the Ravenclaws had started and end the second year’s time on the stage, but Axyen knew it was coming. With the most elaborate maneuvers that Pyxis had ever seen, the Hufflepuff hopped across the destroyed floor of the stage, causing Cassian’s Flipendo to miss him.

So different to the awakened Hufflepuffs were Zach and Samantha who stood quite still in the face of an oncoming spell from the other team. There was no preparation to cast and no fancy footwork like Axyen’s who was still being plagued by the effects of Rictusempra.

“Hey! Wake up guys!” Pyxis called, clapping at them. He didn’t like being rude and in a normal circumstance, would never try to rouse them out of what looked to be stupor with the sounds of his palms making contact, but this was a duel and his first time moderating. The Ravenclaws needed to stay in it for his ego. And theirs.

While her teammates prioritized their own safety, Emma decided to start blasting. She summoned quivering wizard crackers that exploded with deafening pops when they hit the floor at the feet of Cassian. There was zero chance for the Ravenclaw to avoid it seeing as he was distracted by taking down Axyen. Emma’s precision was simply so perfect that even Zach and Samantha found themselves caught by the explosion. That’s sure to get them going again. Zach, like Cassian, totally failed to avoid the radius of the crackers’ explosions. Samantha had just the tiniest bit of luck, stirring to step out of the way of the brunt of it, but still feeling some pain at her ankles.

Axyen had a bad feeling, something told him to focus more on trying to dodge opposed to actually casting any spells. He had a feeling one of the Ravenclaws would want to attempt to finish the job, and Axyen turned out to be correct, even while laughing Axyen could see a spell headed his way, the spell came from Cassian and based on the spell's color and the number of spells Axyen knew, he could make an educated guess that this was a Flipendo headed his way. Since Axyen saw this spell coming at him early, he knew to dodge out of the way and with surprising ease as well. Axyen was stunned himself, and kind of happy he didn't take the risk of casting a spell in this scenario... although he does wonder what could've happen if he did, but he would rather it be a mystery. 'I am safe... for now, I saw the spell coming. I knew focusing on dodging was the right choice here.' Axyen thought to himself as he made sure that no other spell happened to be headed his way. Oddly enough the other two Ravenclaws were doing ... nothing? 'Is this some type of trick or am I just missing something?' Axyen wondered to himself, but apparently they really were just standing around as even the moderator was trying to get them to focus up on the game, so everything really was working out for the Hufflepuff team, even if it was a little rough in the first match and Axyen felt like he would just randomly fall to the floor and just pass out any given moment. He didn't know what do in this scenario. Luckily, Emma used some type of spell Axyen was yet to learn about which hit all three of the Ravenclaws, which was a relief to Axyen.

'Okay, not everything is bad. But what do I do now?' Axyen mentally asked himself, he suddenly got an idea, however his self doubt was really getting in the way of that. 'At this point, something is better than nothing.' Axyen thought to himself.

After that first round Axyen had really taken a beating. Cassian saw that the poor Hufflepuff kid was barely still standing, he looked like he might just collapse any second. Cassian decided to try to take him out of the duel, but Axyen was expecting that. It was an obvious move after all; anyone would’ve tried to finish him off. So Cassian watched Axyen jump out of the way of his successful Knock-Back jinx. Smart move, good job kid. Curiously, EmmaLee had dodged as well. She rolled onto the ground and Cassian, for the life of him, couldn’t figure out why she’d done so. He was so confused by EmmaLee’s impractical move that he didn’t see the Cracker Jinx coming at him. His senses were quickly overcome with flashing colored lights, crackling pops of firecrackers, and his nostrils filled with smoke. Coughing and blinking through his overstimulated senses, Cassian found he couldn’t think clearly and casting his next spell would be more difficult than normal. He did, however, see that EmmaLee had stamped her foot upon rising back to her feet. The little movement wasn’t hard to miss and she seemed to be quite upset. Perhaps she was upset that she had instinctively wasted a round? Honestly, who knew?

A lot less happened this round than in the one before. Two of the badgers focused their attention on dodging incoming spells, however, from the other side, only one spell was cast. The only Ravenclaw duellist that had cast a spell was Cassian. After her amazing first spell, Samantha had gotten distracted. Her eyes were looking at the spectators, instead of her opponents, as she was trying to find one of her friends. She hoped Elsian had seen her cast that amazing confringo. In the end, she didn't manage to find the familiar face of her friend, and also missed her oppurtinity to cast a spell. Only when the duelling captain yelled at them, Samantha returned her attention to the duel. This was embarassing. Well, she didn't need this round. They would be fine, they would win anyway, she told herself.

Zach was daydreaming during his duel?! He regained consciousness after hearing the sound of Cracker Jinx. "Ouch!" the boy exclaimed when the debris of the jinx hit him. How could that spell hit the birbs?

That spell was one of the spells that Zach was eager to learn, but of course, without being hit by it. "Uh... Sorry," he said to his teammates. Zach fixed his stance. With wand ready in hand, he was now ready to hit the badgers.

If there was one thing Emma had learned in the past year and a half of duelling, it was that the unexpected could happen. Two of their opponents must have been distracted or something, because only Axyen was targeted this round, and only by one of their opponents. Which was a nice stroke of luck, especially after the beating they had taken last round. Emma recalled a successful spell from the last duel that she couldn't resist especially with the success Hufflepuff would hopefully have this round. She quickly launched her spell with great enthusiasm, happy to see that it landed it's hit on two of the three Ravenclaws. It technically landed on the third as well, but a glancing blow, not the full on one she would have preferred. But at least damage had been done and this round was more successful than last.
