Alyssea eyes widened at Astra's mentions of a ball. Before she could even ask what it was, she quickly closed her mouth and the memories flooded back. The water, the bony fingers around her arm, the darkness. She took a big gulp. God, no matter how many days passed since that event, she still couldn't shake off the fear she felt in her bones.

The conversation needs to keep moving. Alyssea bit her tongue and smiled. "What ball was it? That sounds awesome! I've only been to the one at school..." She trailed off after that. They had both been at the ball to know what exactly went down. Alyssea nervously laughed as Raizel mentioned how crazy it was.

"Potion making sounds awesome!" Alyssea was glad to a fresh topic. While Alyssea was decent at Potions, it wasn't her favourite. She had her fair share of things blowing up in her face and things just going wrong. She preferred History of Magic and maybe Charms. Transfiguration was up there, sure, and she liked how the professor let her work on higher years spells, but it wasn't her favourite. "What kinds of potions is she making now?"

Alyssea blushed at the compliments regarding her skating. "I'm not that good! I started two years ago? A year and a half, actually. I'm being taught by one of the Ravenclaw seniors at Hogwarts! He's so cool. I hope I can improve so I can impress him the next time we see each other at the rink."

That was her New Year's resolution. Hopefully 2024 would be the year she finally stuck to one of her resolutions.

Realization came too late for Raizel, finally understanding why Alyssea reacted the way she did at the mere mention of ‘Balls’. She looked away, touching the back of her head and giving it a scratch. Right, the Fall Ball. While she was lucky enough to resurface immediately after being knocked off of their boat despite not knowing how to swim, Alyssea didn’t. Who knows how long she was in those waters when her and Zach saw her break through the surface and swam away.

She wasn’t exactly angry that time when the girl swam away from them because she knows she has her reasons and she did. In a way, she was glad that the topic shifted into something less… trauma reminding. The Leveret, Astra says, a name that Raizel hasn’t heard for quite some time now, making her wonder how Avery is doing, on what he did with that letter of his and if he found out whoever sent it to him. “I know a Leveret.” she said. “Avery Leveret, Second Year, Slytherin.” Right, the first ever person that she interacted with too on the way to Hogwarts in her first year. He seems like a nice guy, kind enough to help her with her nerves during those times and enough for Raizel to refuse to believe anything else than that unless she sees how he had changed since then.

“Why thank you, Morella. I was glad that they grew up just fine.” Raizel heard her mother respond to her aunt. Her mother had always been so proud of her own Herbology and gardening skills and also, she just loves her plants too much but who could blame her, they are lovely. From what she knows about her maternal grandmother though, she used to be a flower shop keeper. As for Astra’s question, Raizel wonders about it as well. Her mother had been practicing her potioneering skills after all. “I don’t recognize some of the potions she’s making…” Raizel answered Alyssea first. “But I did see a couple of Bruise Removal Paste. Maybe some antidotes…” Potions isn’t her forte, she’s more of a Charms person but she does know some potions, able to recognize them but not all, especially advanced ones. But isn’t this needed if she wants to become an Auror? Yeah, definitely need to do some studying. “Do you guys brew a lot of potions?” she asked.

“And I don’t know if she’s planning on doing a potioneering career.” she answered Astra next. The Gryffindor then nodded when Astra told Alyssea she is great at ice skating. While she hasn't seen her do it, she believes that she is great at the said sports. “Would be fun to see you skate.” Raizel is not the type to ice skate, perhaps not one of her interests. She is more focused on her spellcasting skills and lately, flying on a broom.

“Hey, maybe we can do some broom riding practice too.” the girl grinned upon hearing Astra’s resolution about practicing her flying skills. “Oh, Firebolt…” Oh yeah, that broom. She won’t lie, it felt good riding one even though she struggled during that unofficial race. “It’s a cool broom and fast. I’m sure you’ll love it.” She took a quick glance to where her father was, hoping he didn’t hear it or her mother. Luckily, they were busy with their guests. No, she didn’t tell anyone she rode one even though she doesn’t own one, much more, joining an unofficial race and getting knocked out. Her mom wouldn’t be too impressed and would worry about her, she might even get a good scolding for how reckless she might’ve been during that race.

The mention of taking them skating took Alyssea away from the haunting thoughts of the Fall Ball. When did they go back to Hogwarts, again? Oh, she'd have to schedule a time for them all to meet up at the Devon skating rink. Did they even have phones? Judging by how far Raizel lived, she figured the Gryffindor didn't. Maybe Astra? Plans, plans, plans. She clapped her hands together. "Let's do it! If you guys are free for the rest of winter break, we could meet up. If not, I'm sure they'll let us skate at the Great Lake."

The potions talk wasn't all that interesting to Alyssea. She didn't brew potions in her free time nor did she utilise anything they brewed in class. The potions they'd learned so far weren't that interesting nor useful. Her scholarship funds used to be directed at saving up for a nice broom, but had now been collecting dust ever since she got her Silver Arrow. As Raizel and Astra talked about the Firebolt, Alyssea added, "The Silver Arrow is pretty nice, too. Oh! If you want, I've got extra money nowadays. I'll help you save up for a Firebolt."

They talked well into the evening. Alyssea's phone had stayed off for the most part, not that it would turn on, anyway. Raizel's house was magical, so the thing practically died. She did leave her Muggle friends in the middle of a riveting conversation about the newest clothing trends, but they probably wouldn't notice, right? It was New Year's Eve and everyone was celebrating with family.

Alyssea did periodically check the mechanical clock on the wall to see the time. When she saw the numbers nearing twelve, she pointed to it and beamed. "It's almost New Year's!"

Alright, cool, it was the same Leverets that Avery was part of that Astra went to. Sounds like something they would do. Proud purebloods, those exclusive balls or gathering or whatever you called them. They love that… don’t they? Still, she can’t help but feel curious because of how Astra described it as having ‘interesting’ people. Did Avery come off that way for her? Perhaps in a way. The boy is quite mysterious and it had been a while since they had talked ever since she gave him that letter.

Oh well.

“I brew potions… not all the time but uh… yeah. Not my best class either.” Raizel answered Astra’s question, thinking back on her own brews. She only did them because of certain situations she might find herself in the future. Look, that Antidote for uncommon poison might come in handy someday and you’ll be glad it saved your life. Moving on from the potion talk, they went into brooms. “Oh, those fast and awesome brooms.” Raizel doesn’t know where it started, her fascination for brooms that is but she has broom racing to blame for that.

Does she mind? Of course not, and her father would certainly approve of it considering he’s a fan of Quidditch. The only thing missing now is her joining the Quidditch team and dropping duelling. (Spoiler: She did but not for Quidditch, sorry lads) Not happening anytime soon though. “Alright, we can have a meet up and do some ice-skating.” As nervous as she was for trying it out, it could be… fun.

Almost twelve and fireworks. “I think mom bought muggle fireworks.” That would be fun to watch as they celebrate a New Year.
