Amber had had no idea that a letter from her pen pal Aurélie had come for at least 2 weeks. This was because Amber had been at Hogwarts for the Fall Ball. However since she had not been in touch very much with Aurélie she had forgotten to ask her if she was going there so she could meet her. However, this was okay with her because she had gone with her friend Nate. She had also been lost in school work and her friends at Ilvermorny. In addition, there were her adventures and pranks. She had almost forgotten about Aurélie amongst everything. So when Amber got the letter, she was surprised. She had almost forgotten about her pen pal. She quickly read it over and picked up her quill to write her response finally. Dear Aurélie, Oh no worries on taking so long for your response. I did the same anyway. I'm glad Beauxbatons is great. So is Ilvermorny here. Oh that's so cool! I've never considered duelling but it seems you are probably good at it. I'm glad you enjoy it just as much as I enjoy Quidditch. Ahh, I see well it is cool to make a friend from across the sea. I did meet some new people at the Fall Ball this year. Were you there by any chance? I didn't see you and I forgot to ask before. You know it would be cool to meet at the Spring Ball though. Oh and as for houses, we have four, just like Hogwarts. The four houses are Thunderbird, the adventurers, Wampus, the brave, Horned Serpent, the smart and Pukwudgie, the kind. I'm in Thunderbird. Does Beauxbatons have houses? During the Fall Ball at Hogwarts, Aurélie was proud to say that she'd met some new people. One in particular, a French girl who didn't go to Beauxbatons and instead went to Hogwarts, @Ella Margaux-Dupuis, had made conversation with her about her hometown of Marseille. Only after she'd come back to Beauxbatons had Aurélie remembered that she could've met her pen pal Amber at the ball had she looked for her.

Of course, after she'd come back from the ball at Hogwarts, she'd been enveloped in work once more and forgot to send correspondence to her pen pal until she sent something first. The letter got buried under Aurélie's desk, however, and led to her not seeing it for a while. At the end of October, though, as she cleared away the clutter on her desk, she found the letter, opened but forgotten, at the bottom of a pile of graded papers. Feeling bad, she read the letter once more.

Digging out a quill, an ink well, and a bit of parchment, Aurélie wrote back to Amber about her adventures. Blowing on the ink to make sure it was dry, she rolled it up and tied it to one of the school's owls with some thread. Then she sent it off, waiting once more for her letter back.

Dear Amber Frost Hart,

Happy Halloween, Amber! I've heard from my friends who really like to travel that Halloween is some sort of scary holiday in America? I'd never heard of it before, but I guess that's why my English tutors always gave me candy on the 31st!

I've never actually tried Quidditch, my parents were always too scared to let me get on a broom. But now that they aren't near me, I guess I could try to find one. Learning how to fly on a broom sounds scary though, so I'm not sure if I should. Maybe I should just stick to duelling.

I was at the Fall Ball. Well, near it, at least. Instead of being at the actual ball, I was meeting a new friend in the courtyard. She was a French girl who lived in Scotland. I did enjoy some of the food at the ball, though. I didn't see you either, but we must meet at the Spring Ball. I wonder what the theme will be.

Ah, so the houses are based on the personality of the person? Do you have to stay with the people in your house all the time? And, no, Beauxbatons doesn't have houses. That is why I don't know about them very well.

Well, I'm still settling into Beauxbatons. I know it sounds wrong, but I'm still a bit scared to cause any trouble. Maybe once I'm more familiar with the school, pulling pranks won't be hard. Anything at Ilvermorny?

Halloween was by far one of Amber's favorite holidays. Maybe it was because she loved the dark, adventures, pranking and candy. CANDY. She loved candy. So halloween was always amazing. And the weeks after halloween were even better. Why? Well the endless candy for every meal of course! Her desk was now littered with candy wrappers that she hadn't bothered to clean out. One month later, a week after thanksgiving, she finally found the time to clean up her desk. There she found a letter from her pen pal who she had completely forgotten about. It had arrived while she was out trick o' treating that day and had been placed on her desk. And then the catastrophe had struck. And she had not even read the letter. Amber felt terrible. So she opened the letter and read it for the first time smiling. On her newly cleaned desk she easily found a quill and paper and began to write up a letter once again remembering the old days. Happy late Halloween Aurélie! Actually we already passed another holiday, thanksgiving haha! I don't believe there is Thanksgiving in Europe though, but it is a fun time where you get to eat lots of food and hang out with you family. I have attached some candy from Halloween hopefully it is still good by the time it gets there haha! Halloween isn't that scary, but it is full of pranks and we get to go trick o' treating to other peoples houses to get candy. In addition we dress up in fun costumes and decorate houses. At Ilvermorny we set up a whole event with tons of cool stuff and we trick o' treated in dorm rooms. And for Thanksgiving we get to go home and rest as well as hang out with family. Ah, well as you get older maybe you'll get more comfortable with brooms but duelling is fun too! Have you competed against others in duelling yet? And I hope you had fun at the Fall Ball! I sure did! It was quite a time! How did you like Hogwarts?And as for the theme hmmm, that is a good question, I'll see if I can find out! But we must meet for the Spring Ball! Yes, the houses are based off of the personality of the person, but your preference and ancestry is also taken into account. Mostly personality though. It is strange Beauxbatons doesn't have houses. I wonder why...? And no you just sleep in dorms with the people in your house and you compete in tournaments against other houses. You go to classes with them as well and you sit for meals with them but other times you can hang out with other houses. How does it work at Beauxbatons if there are no houses? Oh, well it is okay to be scared, I did not want to cause trouble in the first few months as you have to get on the teachers good side. But after a while it was just irresistible. As for me, I did prank this person while they were on their broom. I just casted a charm that made their broom ride a bit bumpy. Eventually they ended up with dirt and paint on them. It was fun. But we became good friends afterwards so it's okay. You don't want to hurt people while pranking you just want to have fun and make new friends. That's my philosophy. It took a while for Aurélie to receive her letter back from her pen pal, Amber, though the French girl couldn't blame her. It wasn't as if she hadn't forgotten so many times. The letters were just so easy to lose track of or just shove aside on your desk to do later. After November passed and the month of December brought its chills, she decided that she would send a follow up owl to her long distance friend if she received no word back.

Thankfully, the girl didn't have to do that. On the third day of December, an owl came to her dorm room, tired and carrying a letter with a small parcel attached. Naturally curious, Aurélie didn't waste a moment opening it. First, she read the long letter, devouring the words of her pen pal friend. Then, she opened the parcel, eyeing the American candy warily. She knew that her friend wouldn't try to poison her or anything terrible like that, but would it still be alright to eat this long after the holiday of Halloween? And it had travelled all the way from wherever Ilvermorny was to Beauxbatons.

She hoped so, because Aurélie popped them into her mouth, savouring the sweet flavour of the old candy. She loved candy so very much. Hopefully they wouldn't make her sick in the next few days. She had important classwork to do. And duelling practice. Plus, the holidays were coming up and being sick then would be terrible.

A little hyper from her candy intake, Aurélie sat down at her desk, taking out a quill, ink well, and nice piece of parchment. She wrote a reply to Amber and, after a day of rest for her owl, sent it off.

Dear Amber Frost Hart,

Thanksgiving? That's the one with the turkeys, right? I've heard that you Americans feast all day on Thanksgiving. Is that true? We don't really have anything exciting here in France in November, but I can't wait for winter break later this month. My paternal grandparents are taking me to some fancy party, which is not so fun, but I also get to spend the whole break with them, which I'm really excited for. Also, the candy was really good. I just had some and I don't think it was spoilt yet. Thank you!

Who knows, maybe one day I'll like brooms more than wands? But until then, I'm going to stick with duelling. Well, no, I haven't actually officially duelled anyone out of practice, but I've heard that I get to during summer camp, so I can't wait for that. Are you going to play Quidditch during camp? If you are, maybe I could go to one of your games to see you play?

Oh, so the houses don't change much then? And I don't know why Beauxbatons doesn't have houses. Hogwarts does too, right? Do any of the other magical schools?

Thanks for sharing your prank. And I totally agree with your philosophy. My favourite thing that I've learned? Probably all the spells, it's really fun to try them out and practise them. What about you, what is the best thing you learned at Ilvermorny?

Today was Amber's birthday. Which meant three things. One, she was older. Two, her owl was going to shower her with gifts. And three, it was almost Christmas Break. And Christmas in New York was the absolute best. She would be going home to Toronto soon which she was super excited for. The owls came quick. She had opened the one from her parents which was a Silver Arrow. She was so excited that she wrote back a response at that moment. So when her owl came back she expected a gift from maybe her grandparents of something? But not a letter from Aurélie. A letter was a pretty good gift and she was in the mood to reply. Especially since she might not be at Ilvermorny for a while. She would surely be in NY for New Years though. The ball drop was amazing. Right, she had to write the letter. That was what she was doing. Focus Amber. Focus. Except the past few days since break and her birthday was coming she couldn't. I guess that was normal though. But she was determined to get through with this letter. Picking it up, she read it once again. And then she penned her response. Dear Aurélie, Yes, that is Thanksgiving. It's funny how everyone remembers it for the turkeys haha. And we do have feasts, it is so much fun. YES, winter break, it is coming up soon! Your plans sound fun! I'm really excited for it as I get to go back to Toronto. And we get to see New Years and New Years Eve in New York which is amazing! What do you do for New Years in Europe? Glad the candy didn't hurt you ! As for duelling, I think you should stick to what you love. Usually your first instinct is right. I didn't think duelling would be right for me. Almost as soon as Beauxbatons had let out for winter break, she'd left her parents house in Marseille and walked over to her paternal grandparents' even bigger house, which was also in Marseille. Others might've said that staying at your grandparents' house for the entirety of the break wasn't fun, but others didn't have Augustin and Élodie Duval as parents and Anaïs Océane and Henri Duval as grandparents.

What Augustin and Élodie wouldn't dare let their only child do, Anaïs Océane and Henri didn't mind as much. Like running, trying extreme dance, and taking pictures of animals while hanging upside down from a tree. Don't get her wrong, Aurélie's pureblood, fancy grandparents cared for propriety and manners, but they also trusted the little French girl to be responsible in taking care of herself and understood that even she needed an outlet.

Even though Aurélie had to endure the extremely boring New Year's Gala just to get to stay with her grandparents, it was definitely worth it. Not only had she gotten to travel out of Marseille, but she'd also gotten to travel out of France, all without telling her parents!

But a few days before she needed to head back, Aurélie was forced back into her home, only to found a poor owl waiting outside her window. How long had the little creature been waiting while she'd been enjoying herself for the past few weeks? She let the owl in and untied the letter from its leg.

Reading the message from Amber, Aurélie smiled. She sat down and wrote a quick response. Instead of sending the letter back immediately, the French girl got up, put together a little Christmas+New Year's present for her pen pal, and wrapped it up. Satisfied, she attached both the parcel and the letter to the owl's leg and sent him off, realising only a minute too late that she'd forgotten to let him rest.

"Sorry, little friend! I promise to let you rest double next time!"

Well, I don't know about the rest of Europe, I haven't been to very many places except France, but my family always stays up together and my grandparents come over. Together, we all write our wishes for the New Year. We didn't get to do that this year though, because as I told you in my last letter, my grandparents and I spent this New Year at a fancy party. How does your family celebrate? Do you have lots of family that comes over? I don't have any cousins or aunts or uncles.

It's your birthday? Or it was your birthday? Happy belated birthday, Amber! How old are you now? Also, a Silver Arrow, that's so cool. I have a Nimbus 1700 in case I ever want to try a broom sport, but I haven't used it yet.

I hope you had fun during winter break too, Amber. Joyeux Noël! That means merry Christmas in French. And happy new year too! I made you a little present. It's a little charm bracelet. I have plenty of charms lying around if you ever want another one, but right now I've sent you two brooms, a star, and a little cauldron. I hope you like it.

Her birthday had passed. Christmas, her second favorite holiday had passed. And New Years had passed. All in a span of less than a month. Crazy. Well December was just like that for Amber. A whirlwind of chaos. Christmas had been a flurry of traditions while the break had been a ton of practicing on her new Silver Arrow. And then New Years had been New York fun running around free and watching the ball drop. And then boom. She would go back to school. Throughout the chaos Amber almost forgot about her pen pal across the globe. So when Amber got a letter written from Aurélie her brain just blanked out. Her owl had almost collapsed onto the bed and she had been wondering why. Until she remembered. Tearing open the letter she finally sucked her pen pals stories of the break. This was a great way to end the winter break. With written adventures you could almost feel though your quill. Dear Aurélie, Ah, well fancy parties aren't my thing either but I hope you enjoyed your winter break a ton! My family celebrates by just inviting some friends over and having a quiet Christmas Eve and Christmas. For New Years Eve and New Years its quite the opposite! We have a huge party of sorts or we go to New York to watch the ball drop like we did this year. I prefer going to New York. Parties are a little too much. Haha! Yes it was my birthday about a month ago! And thank you! I'm 13 now I guess. Wow I guess I'm finally a teenager although that means nothing to me haha. And yea, I'm super excited about the Silver Arrow, I've been practicing every day with my little brother Joshua who demands to get a broom of his own now. He can't though not for another 2 years. He will start Ilvermorny next year though which is crazy. Awww, I love the bracelet it is the best! I will wear it every day. I made you a present too! Winter break was at an end too soon and Aurélie was forced to repack her trunk, which wasn't hard considering she'd barely unpacked when she'd arrived home. Still, there was work to be done to get ready for the new school semester. Like making sure all the textbooks were inside the trunk, that there was enough parchment and ink wells and quills to last her the rest of the year, and that the cleaning supplies that she'd purchased for her wand were safely tucked in. Other than that, she had to double check her outfits, making sure she had something for cold days and warm days and windy days and moderate days, for studious days and pajama days. And, the Spring Ball was coming up, and she'd heard the theme was masquerade. Aurélie didn't want to go in a second-rate costume that was found last minute. No, she'd made sure that her costume was perfect. A soft gray ball gown that was to be accompanied by a full dove gray mask covered with the softest feathers to have ever been found. She'd handpicked everything herself and she was proud of what she'd selected. She couldn't wait to go back to Hogwarts.

And then she'd made the commute to Beauxbatons and school was in session and time seemed to go on as normal, as if her wonderful break had never happened. A few days into the beginning of school, Aurélie received the owled message of her pen pal friend with excitement. She read through it and quickly jotted down a message as Amber's owl rested. After a day of promised rest for the little winged creature, the French girl tied her letter back and sent the critter off with a cheery wave.

First of all, thank you so much for the gift! I don't know which key that I'll replace the one that you sent with, since I don't really use anything with keys, but I'll find something. Maybe I'll even keep a diary and lock it up so that no one can steal my secrets. Well, no Muggle, since most wizards and witches can just cast the Unlocking Charm. Oh well, I guess locks aren't that useful.

Nice, thirteen already! Well, I mean, you are a year older than me. I'm turning twelve this February. Wow, I feel so much younger. I don't really know what I want yet, but I'll figure it out closer to the date. Are Silver Arrows the best brooms out there? I don't know much about them.

I really wish I had a sibling- younger or older. It gets so lonely to be all by yourself at home, and my parents get so overprotective because they keep saying that I'm their only Aurélie. I know they only mean well, but I don't even get to do the things other children get to do!

Anyways, I'm glad you enjoyed your holidays. I want to go back to school to see my friends, but I also just want to stay home and not have to do work. Oh well, I have to go anyway.

Amber had gotten back to school in one piece, sad that her break was over, but happy to see her bestie Kaya once again and all of her other friends. And most importantly, to get back into Quidditch. Amber had set up all her stuff once again and was about to head out of the dorm when her owl came knocking at the window. She smiled. This time she had not forgotten who her pen pal was. After all it had not been too long ago that she had sent her own letter. Really, it had only been 2 or 3 days ago. She could not remember exactly. She smiled as she read the letter. Maybe she hadn't thought her gift all the way through, but it was the thought that counted. She then grabbed a quill and began to write. Ah, yes, I guess so. I guess the key is more of a decoration than a practical thing. Oh well! Ah well it is almost February! When in February is it? I need to remember to write you Happy Birthday! And as for Silver Arrows I don't know. I believe the Firebolt or some other brooms are pretty good too. It depends on the sport. But a Silver Arrow was more in my price range so. And it does work pretty well. Ah, I do sometimes wish I did not have a sibling. I guess there are pros and cons to both. You do not want to be near us when we are fighting. But it is nice to have the freedom I guess. Slowly, your parents will give more freedom. They care for you a lot, that is why they are protective of you. The mixed feelings of school I can totally relate too. At the end of the day, either way, you will be happy. Quick question, everyone is talking about the upcoming ball. Aurélie had to admit, being back at school wasn't really all that bad. Over her amazing holiday break, she'd forgotten how exciting life at Beauxbatons was compared to life in Marseille. One key feature was that her extremely overprotective parents were not present. So no one ruled over Aurélie's life.

If the little French girl decided to do homework late into the night, that was her choice. If she wanted to make friends with the troublemakers of the school, she could. And if she wanted to take a quick walk outside in the beautiful gardens after her evening meals, then, well, it was completely up to her. No one could really stop her, and the experience was more than just freeing.

Aurélie took it back. She loved school, loved Beauxbatons so very very much. And one such exciting event that happened when she was at school? The spring ball!

When Amber's letter arrived, the girl, who'd learned to manage her work much more efficiently, answered in just a few days. A big improvement from before. In only a few hours, she'd written her return message. Though, she forgot about it for a day. It was only Amber's hooting, impatient owl that made Aurélie remember and tie the little message onto the owl's leg and bid the creature farewell.

Dear Amber Frost Hart,

My birthday? It is on the 12th of February. And, I've heard plenty of Firebolts. Apparently, my mother was a Quidditch player back in her day. My meek, soft unassuming mother, a Quidditch beater for Beauxbatons, who could've guessed? I guess Quidditch runs in my veins then, so maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

How could you ever wish not to have a sibling? Your brother must be very, very annoying for you to say that. I can imagine all the fun you probably have together. Though I guess you'd want peace and quiet sometimes. Hm... maybe being an only child isn't all bad.

Also, I don't think that my parents will ever give me more freedom. Ha, I can't even imagine it. They won't ever let me do anything. They are great parents though. But, seriously, I can climb a tree without getting hurt.

You're so right! I am really happy that I'm back at school. I missed Beauxbatons so much over winter break. As for the ball, I'm definitely dressing up like my favourite animal. Not white doves, but grey ones. What about you, any ideas?
