The desks had been pushed to the sides of the room, leaving an open area in a circle in the very center of the classroom proper. The light cast down upon the floor gleamed ever so slightly in the light of the setting sun that was beginning to set later and later in the day due to the coming of spring and eventually summer. In the center of that circle there was a green-clad boy with his fingers tangled in his hair, sitting criss-crossed on the ground with his elbows on his knees and leaning forward intently towards the music box before him.
It was a round music box, small enough to be tucked away if he had to, made of enamel and gold, open to reveal a blue butterfly that slowly turned around and around. The tinkling music that came from it was a song that was achingly familiar and so far away in his past. It was 'Farfallina Bella e Bianca' Beautiful and White Small Butterfly, sung as he remembered it in chiming form, a lullaby that was his childhood seemingly so far gone and lost today... It had been a present from Romeo for Christmas the year before... he had opened it every now and again just to hear the song and to hum along with it... and it reminded him of home.
Of a simpler time, and of a time that everything had seemed to be alright. When everything would have been alright if there had never been any magic to break it all to a million pieces. If Madness had not snuck in on the coattails of Misfortune and Death, and if the boy's own mind had not betrayed him so many times before. If everything had simply just... not happened the way that it had happened, as it were.
The boy was rocking forward and back ever so slightly, humming to himself under his breath as his eyes were frozen wide. There was a void in his chest, a sucking that seemed to entrap his heart and turn it cold as his mind raced and all that he could hear was the music. The music was what would ground him, surely, not the thoughts whistling through his mind, this twisting in his stomach that never seemed to go away--not for the past few years, at least--the constant sense of nausea, the need to throw up but finding himself unable to. TW Allusion to Drawing Own Blood via Hypodermic Needle At the creases of his elbows, there was slight throbbing; the remnants of that day's attempts to properly use the hypodermic needle that he had stolen from the nurse a month ago... that mad nurse... He had to practice, though. He would need to learn that skill for the things that were to come. They itched ever so slightly and felt a bit bruised, but it was nothing that a little time and healing magic wouldn't fix.
Closing his eyes, Piérre tucked his chin into his chest and curled his fingers into his hair tightly. He regretted it almost instantly as the darkness immediately seemed more cavernous than empty sight, and his eyes opened again. He had ruined everything, had ruined everyone including himself. One by one those bridges had been burned to ashes, had been left to smolder even after being extinguished. Those that he had once been connected to, they had now left him. That was for the better, though. His madness would only draw them down with him, would sink them... would doom them. Pericles, Evelynn, Romeo, Valentin, people that had perhaps once cared about him but had never known who he really was, so many people that had vanished, so many people he no longer remembered the names of because he had not bothered to learn them... How terrible it was to feel nothing.
To know that he had no feelings of his own on this... because he had never gotten close to anyone enough to care. All these faces were like mist, all these memories were more precious now more than ever. It was all he would have in the end, after all. It was all that he would bring with him into whatever was waiting for him, whatever it was that he was going to end up. Compared to everyone else, he was insane. He was mad, totally and irrevocably. He had ruined himself and now there was no way to go back. He had no way to go back on what he had said, what he had done. Perhaps it would be easier now to simply lean into the reputation he had made for himself, to lean into the nothing that he was and the nobody he would end up being. The irritating sore in this school, the bastard who had no place here other than to frustrate and to drive himself even further into madness.
How long, he wondered, would it take for the school to finally put him in Mungo's for good?
The music box slowly wound down, and Piérre picked it up and began to wind the key on the bottom of it to return the music again. His green eyes were dull, his mask was down. There was nobody to perform for right now. There was nothing to mask against yet. Nobody to be plastic for, to be tormented for or to torment himself over.
Only the ghosts that lived in his mind, and the few happy memories of the things that used to be.

EmmaLee pushed the door to the Great Hall open and walking out into the hallway. She hadn't eaten much today, frankly she hadn't eaten much in the past couple of days and at this point eating seemed kind of like a monotonous chore when she could be doing other things.
It felt like something big was coming, but she couldn't tell what kind of big thing. She just knew that the curious anticipation of it was tangling her insides together like too many vines going up an old house. The last time she felt this way, the week ended with her parents informing her that they were moving to Scotland. She had heard their whispered conversations about it for weeks, not hearing the words but the planning in their voices and the fact that they stopped talking once they noticed she was coming into the room. She hated surprises. She hated change even more, even still.
Her mother's letters had a different tone to them lately, regal and formal in a way that she rarely ever talked to her daughter in. Her stepfather's letter were similarly....odd: short and staccato sentences like he wanted to write to her but didn't know what to say, or, rather, didn't know how much to tell her. Her parents letters together said little of home and what they were doing themselves and were almost entirely about Chlo and her milestones and asking various questions about how her schooling was going.
As the great door close, EmmaLee sighed and from the corner of her eye, she saw her large, fluffy cat, Minx, come around the corner and pad towards her until the animal was twining around her girl's legs with a loud purr. EmmaLee smiled and ran her hand over the cat's head and back before standing upright again and looking up and down the corridor as if the stones would tell her what to do. She didn't want to go back to the common room. As comfortable as it was, it was almost always occupied with chattering, excitable other students, which was too much for her right now, but she also didn't want to go to her room, where the silence and the isolation was too little. She thought about just taking a walk somewhere outside, but the grounds were filled with so many possibilities of where to go that it was oddly claustrophobic and overwhelming trying to pick a direction. She wanted a simple location with a simple task to occupy her mind.
Minx stood up on her hind legs and padded the wand attached to EmmaLee's hip until it fell out of the holder and down the hall. The cat chased after it, knocking the white stick down the hall in a game of chases designed for herself. EmmaLee made a sound between a chuckle and a scoff. "Get back here with that." She said, chasing her enigmatic animal down the hall.
When she finally caught up to the cat, she scooped up her wand and had an idea. "Well, I could practice my casting a bit. It would be nice to show off some of the new things we learned to Chlo." She said to Minx and also no one in particular. A plan of action decided on, EmmaLee walked a bit down the hall to what was usually an unoccupied classroom.
Pushing open the door she found that it was in, fact, occupied. "Oop, I'm sorry, if you're using this I'll just... goooo...." She trailed off, seeing the boy sitting on the floor. He was curled over an object that she couldn't see around his crop of curly, brown hair, but his posture was decidedly despondent. As she noticed the boy's posture, she opened the door further and stepped carefully inside, Minx following at her heels with a curious sniff towards the new figure.
"Are you alright?" She asked, tipping her head to the side to try and see his face. The pale girl took steps forward to place herself in front of him, but at a comfortable distance and crouched down with her feet flat on the floor and her arms around her knees to put herself eye to eye with the boy if he looked up.
Minx stood behind her owner and peered around at the boy curiously, her tail flicking with interest.

One Foot in the Rubber Room, One Arm in the White Jacket
Dinner time was one of the most hated times for Elisa. She couldn't bear to stay in the noisy Great Hall after a tiring day. Hogwarts was not as exciting as she had thought. It was quite boring for the young girl who couldn't live a single day without mischief or anything fun going on. As the young Slytherin was on her way to the study room to complete her homework for the day, her mind was full of different thoughts. Some were positive while the rest were negative as always.
While battling the thoughts in her mind, she tried her best to reach the study room without being spotted by anyone, but she was instantly caught off guard when she heard a melody echoing through the hallways, it was the type of music produced by a music box, it was as light as a whisper yet continued to flaunt its beauty, something about the music made her yearn to find the source of it,
After a while of trying to stop herself from running towards the source of the music, Elisa finally gave up and started strolling towards the source of the music. The more she heard it, the faster her footsteps got, to the fact that she was running towards the place where the beautiful music came from.
After a while of searching, she finally found the source, it was from the classroom which was quite unexpected, students rarely visit that place, especially during dinner time, at first Elisa hesitated a bit from entering the classroom, but after a while, she couldn't stand it anymore, gently she opened the door to spot two higher years, the girl was crouched next to the boy who seemed to be curled over an object on the floor, this scene was enough for Elisa's blood to run cold, something was wrong,
Elisa quickly slid into the room and muttered "Is everything alright in here?", she slowly walked towards the two higher years, it seemed like the music was coming from the object that the boy had curled over. At first Elisa wished to ask the girl about what had happened but after seeing the boy's situation and the girl's worry, Elisa decided not to and slowly walked a bit forward, near to the older boy whose face wasn't visible, she slowly kneeled next to the girl and whispered to the boy in a low yet warm voice "Are you okay?", the situation of the boy seemed bad, it was a truly heartbreaking scene for Elisa who wasn't used to seeing people in this kind of a situation.

The faeries would easily call Astra away with their music. If even a hint of that beautiful, soulful art presented itself, she followed it, she searched for it, she wanted to listen.
And so here she was drawn away from whatever she had been doing (see, she already forgot, how susceptible of her) to follow the whispers of a music box down the hall and into the classroom where she often squirrelled herself away to work or ponder or read or daydream.
The music box was haunting, as all music boxes seemed to Astra. Like something of antiquity; a fragment of the past. The child had once read a scary story involving a music box. She didn't much remember it now, but she still got a little bit of the shivers when she heard one.
Being unfocused as she was, she did not notice what would have been a familiar blonde-haired classmate and acquaintance of hers at the very door she approached. Elisa Shakestra was inside before Astra returned to her senses and also entered the place.
She peered into the classroom, noting first the presence of Elisa, a cat, and another girl, with hair the color of honey. Oh! I was going to get Hermes to go for a walk. It's alright, he can wait a little longer. We'll just play for more time later. Her deep eyes would flick round once more before lighting on the boy in the spotlight.
The Phantom. Known to others as Piérre. A usually jovial fellow, and someone who intrigued her. He was lively, whip-smart, and somehow completely unlike anyone she'd ever met. As in, the only person like the Phantom was the Phantom. She could think of no person who shared his traits even remotely, except perhaps if you combined Aunt Aces and the twins.
But in this moment she saw none of his former vitality. His green eyes, cast downward, were dull. He seemed numb. It was a feeling the young redhead related to all too well.
In an instant, a flash of images, sounds, memories assaulted her mind, the Vault swung wide open. Astra's fingers crept around the doorframe and clenched tightly. She stuffed them all back in before they could do any damage, closing the Vault tightly, putting an extra lock on it just in case, her eyes tightly shut and a shaky breath drawn.
She closed the Vault. She opened her eyes and let out a quiet, near-silent sigh. Then she softly padded around the girls, around a few desks that stood in her way, and dropped cross-legged beside the boy. And by beside, I mean roughly two and a half feet away, on his right.
She did not speak, at first, then softly, tentatively...
"Piérre?"

Lily was not having a good day at all. She was hurting mentally inside. Lily was missing her parents terribly and it was not helping that she was blaming herself for what happened. If only they hadn't fought the day before. If they hadn't been mad would she still have them in her life? Thoughts that went through her head everyday. Lily was not in a good place at the time. She was broken inside, losing het parents and having to see them after the crash, their eyes expressionless and blank. The eyes that had once looked at her with twinkles in their eyes.
Lily felt tears prick in her eyes and she pushed it down again wanting to be alone. She speed walked to a classroom that was normally empty and walked in freezing at the students in there. Only one she knew. And that was one that made her step in the room further at the look on his face. One of sadness. One that would mirror hers if she let it. And the music...the music wanted to make her cry. She walked closer to him not too close but closet than some of the others. "Piérre? Are you all right?" She whispered her voice having an emotion that was hard to pick out.

With the music box having been wound, it was replaced in front of him with a gentle hand, letting the butterfly inside of it slowly spin once more as the music continued to play again. There was a silence as the spool in it had to return to its cyclical start, and then the melody started from the beginning all over again. It wasn't really a matter of how long the song went on, it was more of a matter of how long Piérre would forget how many times he wound the little pocket-sized capsule up just to have it run out over and over again.
Pointed ears piqued as there came a creak from the doorway, only a few moments after the sound of running and a foreign tongue had slipped through the air. A soft voice, tinged with the accent of a romantic language not that of Piérre's familiar Italian, spoke to him, and suddenly his heart turned into ice in his chest in quiet fear. His eyes were wide, but the pupils contracted ever so slightly as he became aware of the approach, a silent tensing as it closed in with a cat that seemed curious to see him. His eyes flicked to it quickly before softening slightly. He did like cats...
He didn't respond verbally, only nodding his head slowly. His gaze didn't break from the feline, and his head tipped ever so slightly to one side curiously. His hands slithered down to rest on his knees, tightening their grips there slightly so as to dry mildly sweating palms. The girl crouched down to his level, and Piérre found himself unable to not look into her eyes. His own eyes were bottle green, usually brighter and with a sparkle to them if he were smiling. Dark circles were beginning to form under them, a tired look that decidedly did not befit him compared to some other more gloomy and mildly edgy figures that walked the corridors of the castle in turn. He was tired. He was very exhausted.
Those eyes continued to remain fixed on her until another sound interrupted, his ear piquing once more to assess the sound. Another feminine voice, and another presence in the room, a pale presence like a phantasm. A small smile began to form on his lips and a bit of color forced itself into his face with the mere action. Eyes departed from the first girl, to focus on the second now. "Yes." He said at last, his voice weak for want of use for a moment. He cleared his throat. "Yes. I'm doing alright." A lazy hand flipped closed the music box, letting the last harmonious chord ring out and then die like a whispering breath in the large and cavernous room.
He became aware, again, of a presence nearby as eyes turned to the doorway where a red-haired girl came now after opening her eyes after a seemingly brief meditation of some kind. Ah... yes, this young Slytherin girl. A few times had Piérre run across her, in the dungeon and in an impromptu snowball fight. He knew her peripherally. She dropped down beside him and crossed her legs similarly, and now his green eyes finally regained a bit of sparkle, strangely changing from dull glass into a cut jewel. "Ah..." He said softly, a flash of teeth and a raising of one of his brows. "You've learned my name. That's a feat that only a few have been capable of." Who from, he wondered... He did many dealings in this school, but never or sparingly did he use his real name, or that name that would be easiest to track down. Contacts were essential, and himself as a contact being widely known could sometimes prove a dangerous thing to let simply slip about unwarranted and uncontrolled. "Usually that means I'm in trouble."
And the last... a lion. She seemed to know his name too... or well, Piérre supposed it was natural that she knew his name. She was a duelist that he was responsible for as one of the dueling team's--and as a former duelist--captains after all. Lily. The grin widened a bit more and those green eyes gleamed with a reflective white sheen that caught the light and directed it elsewhere and away from him. "Delighted. Simply delighted." He said coyly with a bite of humor curling his words. He bit his tongue in amusement, uncoiling himself a bit and stretching luxuriously like his own cat Figaro would.
So many people, and so many of his faces to choose from. This was where the show always got interesting, when the first act unfolded upon the first scene and the first moment, the first word of the first dialogue of the first actor. A performance of a lifestyle and a stage that was the world. "So many strange wandering souls. It's dinnertime. Did the house elves forget to prepare it or did someone set off a dungbomb in the Great Hall again?" Came the jest of a line.
Forgotten was that strange and vulnerably numb moment, at least for now. A switch had been flicked, and now the Jester had taken the stage, dedicated to his role as the proctor of entertainment and amusement unfiltered.

EmmaLee studied the boy as his gaze came up from the thing in his hands: a delicate, green and gold music box with a butterfly twirling inside that was similar to the one in her hair, which she touched absentmindedly as she watched the mechanical insect spin from one corner of her eye and watched the boy react to her presence from the other corner.
EmmaLee caught the panicked look in his eyes as his gaze met Minx's instead of hers and softened. Minx's ears and nose twitched curiously at the sudden attention. The boy nodded slowly and stared at the creature for a moment before tipping his head to match her curiosity. Minx tipped her head in mirror and returned the boy's gaze: unblinking, blue eyes in a white face meeting dull, green eyes in a pale, olive face. A momentary staring contest before the boy's hands moved to his knees, a nervous gripping of his pants, and a final turn to EmmaLee's gaze: blue eyes in a porcelain face meeting green eyes in a pale, olive face. Another staring contest.
EmmaLee continued to study the boy as their gazes held: his curled in posture remained with the moving of his head and his hands, the dark crescent smudges under his eyes that remined her of her own restless nights from first year. Sleepless nights always made pale skin sallow and that was true of this boy as well. She wondered briefly if he was eating enough, as he was clearly not sleeping enough. He was decidedly not alright.
EmmaLee felt Minx turn towards the noise of footsteps: fluffy, pointed, white ears flicking against her owner's thigh as she turned them from the boy towards the echoing step-step-steps, before EmmaLee heard them herself. She didn't turn her own gaze as the boy lifted the corners of his lips, a trace of pink brightening the sallow cheeks in a mock of a better mood, and turned from their contest to the next girl entering the room. Minx moved from one side of EmmaLee to the other to inspect the newcomer, following the girl as she asked a similar question of EmmaLee, inquiring the boy's state.
He answered her with a lie that caught in his throat at first, seemingly recovering from the intrusion upon his moment and pulling together what mask he could. He closed the music box: shutting the music, the butterfly, and whatever had made him so upset inside with a flippant, but definitive action.
EmmaLee tipped her head to the side curiously as the boy seemed to fill with life with each word that came out of his mouth and each new person who came into the room. It was almost like pouring water into a vase. Over about five minutes, EmmaLee watched as he transformed from despondent, dark forest to a sparkling hatter, leaning back and asking them to tea. His bottle green eyes, fully disposed of the panic from before, turned from soft towards Minx to an almost delighted shimmer as each girl came in, inquired about his downturned state, and took a seat to maybe comfort a boy who insisted he need not be comforted.
Once each girl was settled, EmmaLee finally stood up to sit back down with her knees curled under her and looked to the others who had joined the room. The first and second girl, EmmaLee knew, were younger than her, but she knew little more about them aside from their green robes signifying Slytherin. The third was Lily Brown-McCoire, a girl in her year with whom she shared classes and had a few inevitable encounters with. She and Lily had more recently become friendly after some dueling practice in the club. Overall, she seemed to be a sweet girl and it did not surprise EmmaLee that she would try and comfort a possibly upset person.
Once EmmaLee was settled, Minx took the opportunity to leap onto her girl's shoulders and settle herself with her back paws on each side of EmmaLee's neck, and her front paws resting on top of EmmaLee's hair, much like a child at a fair. Due to EmmaLee's color, this gave the distinct impression that the girl had grown a whole second crop of hair in seconds and a second pair of blue eyes inside the curls.
Now that they were all settled and welcomed to the sudden tea party, EmmaLee turned her blue eyes to Piérre's? now sparkling green ones and answered his question with a raised, white eyebrow.
"Just because dinner is served does not necessarily mean that someone has to attend, obviously." She said with a small shrug that jostled the cat on her shoulders, but did not upset the animal. "I don't know about these girls," she gestured to those around her, "but I try to eat quickly and then take advantage of the time to go back to my room and do 'omework or other things. 'Ave you 'ad dinner as well?" She finished, tipping her head just a bit with the question, but very aware of the position of her cat.

Lily looked at Piérre in concern but he just brushed it off saying he was all right. He asked if the house-elves had forgot to prepare dinner or a dungbomb had been set off and Lily shook her head sighing. "No. I came because I had wanted to be alone." She said softly her gaze pulling away from him and to a wall as she gazed off her sadness overwhelming her until she was close to tears but she blinked them away and turned back to the others. "I don't know about the others here though." She said quietly as her gaze went to the music box. "That was beautiful. Sad but beautiful."
Lily thought about backing out of the room as she wamted to be alone to wallow in her misery of the oast few months but something in her told her to stay. To stay and be there for the duelling co-captain and ignore herself completely. Her sad and guilty self. And put Pierre's needs before hers.
She sat down next to him and almost reached out to pick the music box up but she stopped herself. This might be precious to him; she didn't want to touch it.

In an instant, in a flash, the act was on again. With soft and unseen marvel, Astra watched the dull eyes begin to twinkle yet again and the lively, mischevious look come about the boy, as if someone had turned on a light inside him.
He had turned on his own light. This she knew well. She had done the same with her own a mere minute ago. How painfully similar his situation was to her former one.
Based on the dark circles and obviously less than ideal condition of his arms, however, Astra could gather his was much worse than Derek Cameron. No sudden act could hide those marks. She knew that well, too.
Another girl, with red hair and red robes who she'd seen around the duelling club maybe? entered and also stated the Phantom's name. She supposed it was natural that a duellist know a duel moderator, though, so far as she could remember, she'd only ever seen him in a Hufflepuff or Slytherin uniform. He certainly wasn't in the house of snakes, that much was sure. It wasn't terribly far-fetched to suspect him a Gryffindor, she supposed. Shame. Seemed quite snake-ish.
"Such an honor, then," she said lightly. "Would you prefer the moniker I came up with before coming across such information?" Astra was entirely serious. The lad had no way to know her name, not that she could think of, and his own was obviously valuable to him.
With the revelation of the coming and going of dinner, Astra's eyes widened ever so slightly, and she turned her head to look at Elisa, the only person she knew well in this room, and mouthed It's dinnertime? She dutifully avoided the question and traced a pattern on the ground with the tip of her pinkie.
Piérre obviously needed to process something, and it was something he needed to do alone, or with someone he truly trusted. The young lion seemed to need the same.
Now closed and silent the music box sat. The little lion seemed interested in it, moving to touch, but seemed to think better of it.
Astra adjusted her legs to accommodate a stretch, leaning over the crossed limb with her elbows on the ground and face in her hands. "Where's the little cat?" she asked suddenly, after all other questions and answers had been provided by girls and boy. The question sort of slipped out without her permission, but with the presence of the white cat it was painfully obvious the silver fellow was absent.
Hermes' absence also spiked regret now. He was likely wandering the castle, searching for Astra. He tended to do that in instances like this. Hopefully no one would pick him up or try to deter him from his wanderings. Astra didn't want any more complaints of bites and scratches when it was obviously the human's fault.

Any person could tell that the boy was everything but okay, from his position to the lack of color in his face to even the fake smile he put on his face were more than enough for Elisa to realize that the boy was indeed lying, just when she was about to say something she heard a familiar voice behind her say "Piérre"
Elisa turned around to see Astra, a goofy Slytherin girl whom she knew even before coming to Hogwarts through events and all, Elisa noticed that the boy yet again put on a smile and started talking to her, one thing Elisa was able to interpret was that the boy's name was Piérre,
Just when the room was getting a bit silent, she heard one more voice behind her once again, it was a red-headed Gryffindor girl who had asked him of his well being to which the boy yet again replied in a joyous tone while acting like nothing had happened,
After a while, when everyone has settled, she heard the boy ask about dinner, to which Elisa was just about to reply when she noticed Astra mouthing her if it was dinnertime, Elisa slowly mouthed a yes to the girl before finally replying to the boy's question, "I mostly skip dinner and spend this time in the study room doing homework but dung bomb being set off during dinner time but dung bombs being set off during dinner time would be worth watching" she said as she finally faced the boy,
After a while, she heard the red haired girl compliment the music box to which Elisa instantly nodded and muttered "Indeed, the melody was exquisite",
A couple of minutes later, she heard Astra question of where a cat went, Elisa assumed maybe she was mentioning about her own cat to which Elisa remained silent since she didn't know much of pet.
