"You're right! It's much more fun when there's a series, especially because then it's like the book continues, and you see the bigger story, not just for example one year. I love to live into the main character. And you should certainly try to add cinnamon next time, but just a little, not too much or it's not as good anymore. I'm becoming thirsty just thinking about it!" Scarletta giggled too. "By the way, it's already almost lunchtime, so we could bring our lunch outside and eat it there." She said, as she started walking toward the great hall. "We could grab some sandwiches if you'd like, and there's a cosy patch of grass under a willow by the lake. It's sunny there too." She added. "Of course, if you've got a place you like, then I'd be more than happy to go there instead!" Scarletta smiled. "So, um well, I thought um that m-maybe s-s-sense we-we d-d-d-don't know each other th-that well, that m-maybe we could a-ask each other some q-q-questions to learn more about ea-ea-each other?" Scarletta said, breaking into a terrible stutter as she did. And after regaining composure she added: "I'm very glad that I asked you to be friends." She smiled.

Kaitlyn giggled and nodded to Scarlet’s response. “I completely a-agree. I’m a fan of reading the series, after t-the last books comes out. Reduces the w-waiting around for it to be released. T-then again, I love all b-books,” she smiled. “Oh!” She jumped up and down at the thought. “Maybe we can m-make hot chocolate together s-sometime? If you want, of course. No pressure, and if you don't have plans or better friends to hang out with,” she suggested, optimistically. ‘While she said she wanted to be good friends, I wonder just how good Scarlet meant?’

“Oooh, I like the w-way you think. I’m fine with getting s-sandwiches for our outdoor reading together. T-too bad we didn’t plan for this, w-we could’ve packed a picnic b-basket,” she giggled. “I’d love to see this c-cozy patch of grass under a willow b-by the lake. Maybe next t-time, I’ll let you see one of mine?” She promised with a big smile.

A light flush bloomed on Kaitlyn’s cheeks, as Scarlet asked about asking each other questions. It made her freckles more accentuated. She quickly nodded to the offer. “S-sure. I’d like to k-know more about you t-too, if you’re willing to share. And feel f-free to not answer anything, if I a-ask you something too sensitive,” she gave her new friend a reassuring smile. “I’m glad to hear it,” she confirmed.

"I'd love to make hot chocolate with you sometime! I'm not someone who only hangs out with one friend." Scarlet blushed lightly. "And I totally understand what you mean about books! Some books you just wish they'd never end, but some are the best after just one book!" She giggled. "Yes, having a picnic basket would have been nice, but at the same time, things that come unexpectedly, like us becoming friends,-" Scarlet giggled again, making her blue-green eyes brighter and even more beautiful, "-can also become more special than if you planned them." Scarlet smiled. This was the best spring day she could've ever expected! I don't know why I was ever worrying, or doubting her. She thought. "By the way, I'd love to see a place you like to read sometime! We could also make some homework together, if you want." Scarlet smiled kindly. "But of course, I also understand if you have other friends, that you also like to spend time with them." She said just a little softer and less reassured than she usually was. "Oh, and if we do ask each other some questions, then feel free to tell me if I ask anything too sensitive. I don't want to put you under any pressure or anything, it was just meant to learn some knew things about each other."

Kaitlyn giggled and nodded. “Ok. I’m fine w-with that. Whenever we do it, you’re w-welcome to bring anyone y-you want. I’d love to m-meet who ever else you b-become friends with,” she smiled. “Ugh. I know. When I have a f-favorite series, I cannot put it down. I once stayed up late at night reading a b-book I was super into,” she giggled. She nodded in understanding to Scarlet’s comment about the picnic. “So true. I’m h-happy about us becoming f-friends already,” she beamed.

“I found this lovely spot on the grounds. There’s this bunch of trees that make a canopy. I’ve climbed up to it and it looks amazing. I’d love to show you it sometime,” Kaitlyn confirmed. She giggled at Scarlet’s sentiment and gave her a sweet smile. “I’ll make time for you. I also wouldn’t mind hanging out together, either, and introduce you,” she suggested. She nodded in understanding to Scarlet’s words. “I try to be an open book. There’s very little in secretive about,” she replied in a mysterious tone. She smiled brightly. “But, I’ll let you know if anything comes up … although, it may be better to air those out,”[\color] she admitted with a shrug. Her stutter was virtually nonexistent now.

"Th-th-th-th-th--I-I I-I'm-I--" Scarlet stared at the floor. Why couldn't she just talk! Whenever she felt very uneasy, she started to stutter so uncontrollably, a couple times she'd even cried because of it. She knew she had to say something. I'm making a total fool out of myself! Scarlet thought, frantically. In moments like these she usually panicked. But I'm not panicking today. I'm a brave Gryffindor. I'm at Hogwarts. I'm not a child anymore! She thought, trying to make herself braver. Scarlet put her hand on her necklace her family had given her for her birthday. She had never taken it off since. You can do this Scarletta Davis. She thought of the times her father put their heads together and whispered to her: 'You can do it.'

Then she looked up, but still didn't look Kaitlyn in the eye. "You must think I'm an idiot, panicking like that." Scarlet whispered. "I always mess up my first impression with people like this. It always happens when I feel very uneasy, or misunderstood. Now, I guess I'm both. I start to, well, you heard me. I stutter so uncontrollably, I can't talk anymore and panic." "So, I guess I should go?" She whispered even quieter, barely audible. "Or...well, I guess I was foolish enough to think maybe you still wanted to be friends, but... What are you saying! Walk a way while you still can! She couldn't move though. She was rooted to the spot. Some inner voice told her that Gryffindors did not run, that they faced their challenges. I was placed in Gryffindor for a reason. She thought. Even though I might be an idiot, I am, and will always be a Gryffindor. She was finally able to speak normally again.

"If you think I'm foolish, you may laugh." Scarlet said; a voice with no emotion, not loud nor soft, before continuing. "I didn't mean that I never hang out with only one friend. I meant that I don't only have one friend that I like to hang out with. I wasn't trying to be selfish, or whatever you want to call it." And then everything rushed out at once. "You're so kind! And generous! And I'm just someone who panics if they feel misunderstood, or uneasy, just because I don't want people to understand me for what I'm not!" And finished with: "I'm no real Gryffindor." A tear ran down her cheek, as she said: "If you care to find me, I'll be in the Library, or in the grounds." And then she ran.

Kaitlyn stayed quiet, watching Scarlet, giving her an encouraging smile the entire time. She was going to activley listen to her new friend, to show her that she cared. She loved to show how well she could listen to others. It always amazed her when others seemed so surprised that she would actually listen to them. But, Scarlet was starting to stutter and it appeared like something was wrong. Silently, she moved closer to her new friend. She didn’t know if she’d be okay with touch. ‘I like to check first before touching … I don’t want to burden her,’ she thought. Alternatively, she gave Scarlet a bright and encouraging smile, hoping it would calm her new friend’s nerves.

Once Scarlet started to talk, Kaitlyn visibly relaxed, but wasn’t a fan of what Scarlet was talking about. ‘It sounds almost like she was struggling. I’d like to help her, if she’d let me,’ she thought. But, she knew it was important to let Scarlet talk. She wanted to hear what her friend had to say. ‘It is often therapeutic to let her talk, too,’ she thought. But, then Scarlet became more upset, and started to praise her.

When Scarlet mentioned about where to find her, Kaitlyn quickly cut in. “Scarlet, what are you talking about? I-“ She was quickly cut off by Scarlet running away. “Hey, come back!” She shouted. She glanced down at her feet. ‘Does she really think she could outrun me? I run a lot here at the castle. I may be in heels … but I should be fine, they are low-heeled,’ she thought. Without another thought, she started to run after Scarlet.

“Scarlet, please come back! I’m sorry for misunderstanding you! Please come back! I’d like to talk! I-“ Kaitlyn cut off, as she felt her right foot land on her shoe incorrectly. “EEEK!” She shouted as she tripped, twisting her right ankle in the process. Her body fell hard against the floor of the corridor and slid against the ground. “Ouch!” She shouted, as her elbows and knees scrapped against the ground. She attempted to stand up, but the pain in her right ankle was too much, and she dropped to the floor again. A quiet whimper escaped her lips.

Scarlet heard her friend cry out. She knew she hadn't been very nice, but she couldn't just leave Kaitlyn behind if she was in trouble. She ran as fast as she could the way she came, and just as she turned a corner she saw her laying on the floor. She ran over and kneeled beside her. "I'm so sorry! This is all my fault." Scarlet hardly ever cried. She could be very tough, and brave, but at the moment, well, she couldn't help it. Tears fell from her eyes, over her cheek and onto her lap. When she cried, she never wailed. She was just sad or hurt, and the tears would just fall, without a noise. "What do I do now?!" I-I have to make it right! But how? She helped Kaitlyn into a sitting position. "I sh-should never have run. What kind of Gryffindor runs when they're scared?" Now is not the time! Your frie--Kaitlyn is hurt! And she is your friend, given to the fact that she tripped running after me! More tears began to fall. "Thank you for being my friend." She said, "I'm sorry I failed you."

As she had no idea if Scarlet was going to return, Kaitlyn began to slowly get up from the floor. Unsure with how injured she was, she lifted the upper half of her body and held it with her arms. She was still out of breath, from attempting to run. She glanced at her uniform. ‘Thankfully I didn’t tear it … but it sure is dirty now,’ she observed. She looked up, when she heard running. Before she knew it, she saw Scarlet again! A small smile formed on her lips.

Kaitlyn shook her head. “No, it’s not … you didn’t tell me to run in heels,” she replied, still huffing from all the adrenaline. She allowed Scarlet to help her sit up. She gingerly moved her leg, so she was comfortable. “I - I don’t know … I’m sorry, Scarlet. I wanted to catch up with you so bad, I wasn’t thinking straight,” she admitted and looked down at her lap. She shook her head again. “You didn’t fail me, Scarlet. This was not your fault,” she continued. Her blue eyes looked back up at Scarlet. “I’m sorry for misunderstanding you before … and I panic all the time,” she replied, sadly. “And, um, thank you for being my friend, too, Scarlet,” she smiled.

After Kaitlyn told her it wasn't her fault, and that she shouldn't have run in heels, Scarlet smiled weakly. She knew Kaitlyn was just being kind, and that it was at least partly her fault, but it still reassured her a bit. She felt a small ember of hope deep down, and felt a little stronger. Then Kaitlyn told her she wasn't thinking straight, because she wanted to catch up with her so bad. Scarlet had no words, not even any thoughts. She was feeling so many emotions at once. And before she had even finished sorting herself out, Kaitlyn told her she didn't fail her, and that it wasn't her fault. It was too much. But she didn't feel panic, or fear, or anything even close to that. She felt as if she had a friend. A real friend. he first friend she had made at Hogwarts. She had made friends on the train, and had a friend from before school, but not yet a friend from Hogwarts. And that ember of hope became a spark, and from a spark it became a flame, and then a fire, warming up her whole body, from head to toe. "That's okay. You shouldn't say sorry. If anyone, it should be me, but anyway, umm, well, if you still want to go eat, I think we should go before the food is all gone...", Scarlet smiled.

Kaitlyn smiled kindly to Scarlet. ‘I like seeing my friends happy. It seems like active listening is really helpful in trying to get to know others. Forget about etiquette. Just the fact that I listen seems to speak wonders to a lot of the students here. I know a lot of muggles are super over-obsessed with their phones. That’s why active listening works wonders with them … I wonder why it works wonders with magical students. I feel like that requires a little research on my part. But, not just that, they also seem to like it when I act like a good friend … I guess I can thank my excellent friend group for that,’ she thought.

She smiled brightly at Scarlet. “I refuse to blame you … how about we both weren’t thinking clearly?” She offered, knowing that Scarlet would likely be a good friend to her. “That may be a good idea … although … if the food is all gone, we could make our own food,” she giggled. Giving Scarlet a reassuring smile, Kaitlyn attempted to stand up, feeling the pain in her ankle. She winced slightly but was able to stand up by herself as she moved slowly and bit her tongue in determination. ‘I am not ruining this friendship just because I’m an idiot,’ she thought.
