Closed A sunny spring day....Or an adventure?

I love spring, I just wish I didn't have to do homework. Scarletta sighed. She went up to the girls dormitory and grabbed her potions books, parchment and a quill. She finished her homework as quickly as she could (but as Scarletta was a perfectionist, it was actually not that fast), as it was a very sunny day and she wanted to go outside. I wonder where everyone is? They must have all gone to enjoy this nice day as I finished my homework. Well, at least now I can have fun like everyone else. Well, I would, but my few friends I have are doing other things already...I could read I guess. Scarletta only had one very close friend, whom she met a long time ago before she went to Hogwarts. She left her common room and walked down the hall. I should also send a letter to my parents. I haven't sent one for a week and a half, they might be worried. She kept walking, deep in thought of what she was going to say in her letter, and thinking of how miserable these next 7 years would be if her few decided to hang out with cooler people, and she'd be alone and lonely, but then..."Oh! I'm s-so sorry! I didn't mean to bump into you!" Scarletta said, jumping in surprise. "Who are you by the way? I don't think I've ever seen you before."

Kaitlyn skipped down the corridor, carrying her bag filled with her sketchpad and a few books. She had just left the library, having taken out a few books. The nerdier side to her screamed at her to take out a book from one of the subjects she liked the most: Herbology, Potions, or Astronomy. She really wanted to take a deep dive into the differences between the muggle Astronomy, which she was partially aware of, and the magical version. There were so many similarities, yet so many differences.

As such, Kaitlyn took out an Astronomy book for fun, and an Herbology book to help her with a longer assignment. She really wanted to write her homework outside, for it was a nice day. She just needed to obtain her supplies.

As she was deep in thought, Kaitlyn was not paying nearly enough attention to where she was walking, and bumped right into another girl, stumbling slightly. The ever-so impeccably dressed Slytherin quickly regained her composure and looked at the girl. ‘She’s about my age,’ she thought as she gave the girl a shy smile. “H-hi,” she greeted her. “I-it’s fine. I w-wasn’t w-watching where I w-was g-going, e-either,” she confirmed, stuttering due to her nerves.

“Kaitlyn Connor. M-may I a-ask for y-your name, a-as w-well?” Kaitlyn asked, her politeness still evident under the stutter. “N-not t-that I recall … S-sorry, I f-forget. A-at l-least w-we’re m-meeting now,” she replied with a hopeful, yet still shy, smile.

Kaitlyn. She seems pretty nice. I mean, I know everyone says Gryffindor and Slytherin are enemies, but for a Slytherin....well, I don't have many Hogwarts friends yet, and maybe she's a first year like me, Scarletta Hoped. "Oh, I guess I should have started off with that. I'm Scarletta Davis."And after a short pause she drew a breath and added talking very quickly: "But-if-youd-like-to-be-friends-you-can-call-me-Scarlet." She'd said what she wanted to say. It felt good. A little knot seemed to untie itself in her stomach. But now she was a bit nervous of what the girl, Kaitlyn, was going to say.

She thought of the last time she'd tried to make a Slytherin friend
Once upon a time 6 years ago, it had all started on the first day of school. A prep school for half-bloods and pure-bloods, just like her. She went there for 1 year. She remembered, she was nervous and excited, and she was just 5, so she was still a little kid, and didn't know what to expect.
She walked there with her parents, as it was close enough. She remembered the moment she stood face to face with a beautiful building (not at all like Hogwarts of course!), made so muggles wouldn't recognize anything out of the ordinary. Little Letta hugged both her parents and then ran off to make a friend.
She saw a girl playing with someone and went over. "Can I play too?"She had asked politely. The girl stared at her. "Sorry, but I've got better company. And also,
our family's are both Slytherin."She smirked at her and looked away. With tears in her eyes, Scarletta had walked away.

She hoped it wouldn't be the same today.

Kaitlyn was about to give her polite greeting, when Scarlet immediately asked her if she wanted to be friends. Her cheeks flushed dark red, her freckles even more noticeable than normal. She glanced down at her feet. ‘I’ve never had a girl come up to me, greet me, and immediately want to be friends before we even really started talking … Then again, could this girl really be a bad person do that? She knows absolutely nothing about me, other than my house because of my robes. She’s clearly a Gryffindor. Not like that matters to me, anyway, but still. I’m just so surprised … I should really answer her before a scare her away from my shyness,’ she thought.

Kaitlyn cleared her throat as she looked back up at Scarlet, attempting, and failing to return to her polite persona. “I … um. It’s n-nice t-to m-meet y-you Scarlet,” she gave the girl a shy smile. “A-and u-um … Yes … W-we c-can b-be friends,” she stammered. Now, her eyes drifting to her fingernails, resisting the urge to pick at them with all of her nervous energy. “Um, w-would y-you l-like to m-maybe … I-if you’re n-not b-busy … and it i-isn’t t-too m-much of a h-hassle …. h-hang o-out t-together?” She asked, her cheeks still flushed.

My first Hogwarts friend. A Slytherin. Not that it's bad. But what if I asked too early? We didn't talk much yet. And she seems a bit shy, so what if I scared her a bit? And what if she also does't think Slytherins and Gryffindors can be friends? And she's just acting? But at the same time, what if she's not? What if she actually doesn't care I'm a Gryffindor? I mean, she obviously knows my house because of my scarf and my robes.....But this might be the only chance I get! And she asked me if I want to hang out with her so maybe... Scarletta's mind a tangle of thoughts. Ok Scarletta. Get your mind straight, and stop jumbling everything up! She thought to herself. And then another thought rose up to her: Well, I guess the only way to find out is, well, I have to be myself. Then if she thinks I'm, worthy-of-a-Slytherin-like-her, maybe we can be good friends.

"You don't mind that I'm a-a-a Gryffindor? I just mean, you know, everyone says Slytherin and Gryffindor are rivals." I should tell her. Scarletta thought decisively. She took a breath before she kept going. 'When I was little I went to prep school. On my first day I asked a girl I didn't know, who was talking to some other friends of her's, if she wanted to play. And she said: 'Sorry, but I've got better company. And also, our family's are both Slytherin.'But, well, if you don't care, then, well um, I-I'd like to hang out with you. I-I haven't made any friends at Hogwarts yet. The only friend I have I've kn-known for much longer. Well, e-ex-ex-except for you, that is. She said hopefully, with a little smile as she blushed a little.

Kaitlyn flushed lightly. She quickly closed her eyes and let Scarlet’s words sing through the air, and into her ears. She wanted to make sure she could answer … and answer her clearly. She personally hated the house rivalries she read about. If she had to be honest, she found it all pretty stupid. She understood it was meant to instill competition, but still. Despite having her eyes closed, she actively listened to every word Scarlet said. She waited two beats, before finally opening her eyes and looking at Scarlet.

“I d-don’t mind w-what house y-you’re in,” Kaitlyn responded, willing herself to slow her stutter. “And i-it’s that g-girl’s loss f-for not hanging o-out with you,” she gave a shy smile to Scarlet. “Um … yes. I’d l-like to hang out … if y-you’re not busy?” She gestured to the books she was holding. “I w-was hoping to do s-some homework outside … and m-maybe read,” she continued quietly. “You’re … um … y-you’re welcome t-to join me … if y-you want,” she continued with a smile. She took a deep breath in. Held it for a few moments. Then let it quickly out. “And I don’t really c-care for the h-house r-rivalries,” she finished, her willing her stutter and stammer to quiet down a bit. She gave Scarlet an optimistic smile.

Wow. Scarletta thought. To be honest, she was really surprised. It’s not that she thought Gryffindors and Slytherins could never be friends, she was just surprised the girl—Kaitlyn—didn’t think so either. The prejudice Slytherins and Gryffindors couldn’t get along, was, after all, rather true. For most people, at least. She hoped. I mean, not everyone has to follow the group, of course. I don't really follow the group either. I love to read, and learn new stuff, and other things normal people would think was really nerdy and weird. To her, Kaitlyn seemed like a nice person. She didn't seem to judge by sight. As for that, neither did Scarletta. We're actually pretty alike, if you think about it that way. Also, I was just thinking of going outside to read! Scarletta loved reading. It was one of her favorite hobby's. She even stood up for me when I told her about that other Slytherin girl! And with that last thought in mind, she looked Kaitlyn Connor, her newest friend, straight in the eyes, with a kind expression, and answered.

"I love to read! I just finished my homework and um...I'd really like to join you. Lot's of people think I'm strange, liking to read." And then she quietly added: "B-But I guess it's their loss; I mean, what's more fun than digging in to a good book on a rainy day?" And for the first time in what felt like a lifetime, Scarletta laughed. Finally she'd found a friend who understood her. "I-I'm sorry. it's just, well..." And with a pleading and hopeful tone she said: "You understand me, don't you?"

Kaitlyn’s smile turned brighter when Scarlet accepted her offer. “G-great, thanks. I’ve a-always loved t-to read. I don’t u-understand how anyone c-could call it w-weird,” she shook her head. Some people could call just about anything weird if they didn’t like the person doing them. She personally found it hard to see how anyone wouldn’t want to hang around with Scarlet. ‘She barely knows me and wants to hang out with me … and be friends. She’s clearly brave. It’s very admirable,’ she thought.

“Oh, I l-love reading on a r-rainy day. Curled u-up in a blanket r-right next to the window. T-the sound of the r-rain gently hitting the g-glass. The smell of t-the paper from the b-book. And you’ve g-got to have your f-favorite drink next t-to you to slowly s-sip. My favorite to d-drink on a rainy day is h-hot chocolate, with a dash of p-peppermint,” she giggled. She smiled again to Scarlet and nodded. “Of c-course I do. You sound c-cool to me already. I know w-what happened to you weighs on y-you. Thank y-uou for giving me a c-chance. I hope t-this is the start of beautiful f-friendship,” she replied.

“Oh, w-where are my manners? I c-cannot believe I forgot to a-ask,” she turned to Scarlet, “the hardest q-question to ask any book l-lover, what’s y-your favorite genre?” Kaitlyn's stutter was slowly beginning to improve.

Scarlet was smiling. She'd made a friend who loved reading and had asked her what her fave genre was. This is the best day at Hogwarts I've ever had so far. Scarlet thought. Kaitlyn said I'm cool. I think she really understands me, and she also loves to drink hot chocolate on a rainy day, reading! She's very nice, and I can't wait to become great friends with her!

"It might seem a bit strange, but I don't really have a favorite genre. I read a bit of everything." Scarlet looked down for a few seconds, and then looked back up and smiled. "By the way, I love to read and drink a mug of hot chocolate too! You should try it with a small pinch of cinnamon." Scarlet closed her eyes, and smiling she breathed in a deep breath as if smelling it right there, right then. She opened her eyes again and said, "you know how when you read a good book it kind of becomes your friend? It sucks you in, with the familiar scent of the pages and rhythm in the words." Scarlet said, a little softer, and blushed. "By the way, I think we'll become great friends." Scarlet smiled. "Shall we go outside then? It would be a shame to waste this sunny day staying inside."

Kaitlyn laughed at Scarlet’s response. “I feel t-that. I tell myself w-what my favorite genre is, a-and yet, I can’t help m-myself. So, I’ll say my p-preferred genre is science f-fiction or fantasy. I have r-read mystery, true crime, p-plenty of romance, comedies, plays, and poetry …. so yes, b-basically everything,” she giggled. Whenever she went to a bookstore, it normally took her hours to peruse the shelves, and she’d leave with an armful of books.

“C-cinnamon, huh? I’ll have to try t-that the next time I make a c-cup,” Kaitlyn replied. She tilted her head at her new friend’s statement but continued to listen. “Yes, I love that f-feeling! It’s like getting lost in the p-pages, and you root for the main c-character! I especially love it w-when that happens with a b-book series, so you can see t-their transformation in the p-progression,” she giggled.

Seeing Scarlet blush made Kaitlyn blush, as well. “I get t-that feeling, too. I already like t-talking to you, thank you for asking to b-be my friend,” she smiled, brightly. “And yes, l-let’s go! After you, my f-friend,” she giggled, gesturing in the way towards their descent in the castle to head towards the exit. Despite being a girl, she was polite and courteous. “Do y-you have a favorite spot to read o-outside?” She asked curiously.
