Misplaced Trust (Part 1) PV Kit Isabelle Blaine closed

Duelling. It had always been somewhat of a pipe dream for Kit. Sure, she was skilled at transfiguration, but she couldn't exactly turn her wand into a pencil, could she now? Kit had never been skilled at charms, but she decided that, today, she would embrace her misery (what a brave move) and enter the duelling club to try to spectate some genius being played out. She had hoped Atlas would be practicing, but before Kit could search for her, a bob of pink hair caught her attention. Pathetic colour to dye one's hair.

Pathetic aim too, apparently. Kit may not know many spells, but at least she knew the basic fundamental of duelling: aiming so the spell can actually hit. Kit had to hide a bitter sneer as she walked up to the girl. She, most certainly, did not deserve to be on the duelling team, even if she was a Gryffindork. Of course, that meant change needed to happen, and Kit knew just how exactly she was supposed to bring it. Why, the strategy that definitely did not fail with a certain other girl: lean close to her, then commit the absolute perfect backstabbing.

Kit smirked as a spell she barely recognised as Verdimillious ricocheting harmlessly of a practice dummy. Even she could do better than that. Kit hoped, for the Gryffindor's own sake, that she was not on the duelling team. It was obvious. With her skill, she would only mess up every duel she would have the luck to participate in.

Kit tried her best to fix her emotion into something more pleasant as she approached the girl. 'Hi, my name is Kit,' she started plainly, holding out a hand for the other girl to shake. 'I was wondering if you might be a duellist?'

Estelle's practice section was swiftly interrupted. A girl appeared, seemingly out of nowhere (although most likely Estelle just hand't been paying attention to her surroundings). She held out a hand, introducing herself as Kit. Es grinned and shook Kit's outstretched hand.

Kit asked whether Estelle was a duellist, immediately filling Estelle with nervous excitement. Maybe Kit was on the team, or an aspiring duellist. Estelle hoped for the latter - she didn't need another person to tell her about how bad she was. She knew that already.

"I am a duellist! I have been on the team since the beginning of the autumn term and I've been a part of two matches officially, as well as one unofficially. I'm still fairly new to duelling, but out of the three Hogwarts sports it is definitely my favourite."

Estelle neglected to mention that her fear of heights was the reason she disliked both of the other sports.

"What about you? I assume by the fact that you're here and you're asking me that you're interested in duelling - are you joining the team or are you on a team already and I just haven't duelled on against you?"

Estelle smiled, waiting for her answer, then realised that she hadn't actually introduced herself.

"Sorry, forgot to introduce myself - I'm Estelle."

Better to leave it at Estelle, rather than ruin a potential friendship by being associated with her family. It had messed up friendships before and she didn't doubt it would again.

Kit smirked a little as she received the reply she wanted. Well, it turned out the Gryffindork was indeed a duellist. Kit made herself broaden her smile into a hearty one as the girl, who would later introduce herself as Estelle, shook her hand. After Kit asked her question, the girl responded with a seemingly uncontrollable excitement. ‘I am a duellist! I have been on the team since the beginning of the autumn term and I've been a part of two matches officially, as well as one unofficially. I'm still fairly new to duelling, but out of the three Hogwarts sports it is definitely my favourite.’ Woah. Did she even breathe?

Kit grinned, but her heart boiled inside. Terrible aim and already two official duels? She was still on the team? An unofficial duel was nothing, as Kit was almost able to successfully moderate an unofficial duel herself. Duelling? Her favourite sport? Kit would suggest the girl find another favourite sport - and perhaps give her the place. Then again, Kit wasn’t a stupid Gryffindork, wasn’t she? The girl continued, disrupting her bitter thoughts and catching the Slytherin off guard.

‘I am interested in duelling,’ Kit agreed, still smiling pleasantly. At least, she was pretty sure she was agreeing. She hadn’t exactly heard the girl’s question. She had expected the question. It seemed like a fairly reasonable thing to ask in such a conversation. ‘I would…’ Kit paused slightly before continuing, ‘Love to join the Viridian Vipers,’ stressing the name of the Slytherin team. Kit absolutely loved that name, with the wonderful alliteration. Viridian. What a lovely shade of Green. ‘So, what is the Gryffindor team named?’ Kit inquired. Nowhere as good as “Viridian Vipers”, she bet.

The girl had just realised her faux pas in not introducing herself, but Kit still smiled at her name. Those who knew her though - those who knew her would not think it was a pleasant smile. But, oh well.

Estelle smiled back at Kit. She had a feeling Kit hadn't heard her question. Estelle could relate. She often got lost in her thoughts, forgetting what had been said and who had said it. She had a tendency to be a bit of a daydreamer.

As if the universe had heard her thoughts, Kit finished speaking and Estelle realised she'd only caught the last two words. Viridian Vipers. That was the Slytherin team, wasn't it. She wasn't sure, but it kind of had to be.

Unless... what if there were professional duelling teams. That would be awesome, like something from one of her novels. Still, with her aim and clumsiness, she doubted she'd ever be on one of those.

Focus, Estelle!

"Viridian Vipers is such a cool name. I personally love the Gryffindor team name though - Regal Roar. It feels so powerful to say. Regal Roar."

Estelle thought for a moment.

"I'm on the team, but my aim isn't great. Do you have any tips for improving? Honestly, I'll take anything - I feel I'm a bit of a liability. Then again, for my second duel I was up against much older students, so that didn't help."

Estelle looked nervously at Kit, hoping her new friend would be able to help. Es was sure she would - Kit seemed to be very knowledgeable about duelling, definately more so than Estelle. Es wondered why Kit wasn't on the Slytherin team. Maybe she had just been waitlisted and was waiting for a duellist to drop out. Estelle hoped that Kit would get a place on the team soon - Kit seemed like she really wanted it.

All of this was going perfectly. Estelle was not the Slytherin heir. She was not cunning. She was not expecting Kit to be a backstabber. She was so innocent. Honestly, she was a sweet girl. She didn't deserve to be betrayed by Kit. She could have literally chosen any other duellist, such as that annoying prefect, Arvin or something. She felt her heart soften, but it was too late to go back now, wasn't it? Estelle just didn't feel like the kind of girl Kit would befriend. Plus, she had started it all wrong... friendships just weren't supposed to start with lies.

Kit nodded along as Estelle agreed that she liked the name "Viridian Vipers". She introduced the Gryffindor name, Regal Roar. It was certainly not as cool as the Slytherin duelling team's name. A roar felt... wild somehow, as if disrespecting all strategy in duels. Of course, when had Kit valued strategy so much? No. Duelling was about strength, it was about accuracy, it was about force. Most importantly, it was about victory. It was about the sweet taste of triumph. Kit laughed a little and said, 'I love that name too.' She mimicked a little roar heartily.

Kit grinned as Estelle continued. 'I'm on the team, but my aim isn't great. Do you have any tips for improving? Honestly, I'll take anything - I feel I'm a bit of a liability. Then again, for my second duel I was up against much older students, so that didn't help.' Kit had noticed that herself. With such obviously terrible aim, who wouldn't?

'That sucks,' Kit started, feigning some empathy to the second year Gryffindor. Kit had practically watched all of the duels, whenever she had the time or chance to. She vaguely remembered the duel Estelle might have been in. The other duellists looked they were fourth years at the least.'I mean... how much older were day? It must have been really stupid for the captains to pair you up with someone too old.' Kit paused, contemplating on how to answer Estelle's question. Truly, Kit had never been too experienced in duelling. Sure, she moderated a duel... but she had to run in the middle of it. Never mind... 'Well, I've never duelled before,' Kit said with a nervous laugh, 'I don't want to give bad advice... but maybe just focus more when you're casting?' It came out more as a question, but sometimes making a new friend means cutting down on the confidence.

Still, good progression.

Estelle giggled at Kit's roar. She was glad that Kit wasn't wary of her for being an opposing house's duellist.

"I don't really know why we were paired up in such a bad pairing. It was me (a second year), a third year and a fourth year against a fourth year and two fifth years. 2,3,4 vs 4,5,5. Not very fair. I suppose they must just not have had enough older years on our team and we got the short straw or something... I don't know. But it did seem rigged."

Estelle shrugged. It was irritating, but there wasn't much she could do about the duel pairings. It had also only been one time - her first match was a pretty equal pairing. If there were more matches like that, she would complain. However, so far, it had only been once.

Estelle listened to Kit's advice. It was pretty solid advice, although focusing was difficult, especially when duelling. Still, she thought she'd try it.

"I'm gonna try it. Stand back."

Estelle cast Lumos, focusing all of her energy into aiming. She hit the target this time, just off center. It may not have been the largest improvement, but it was definitely progress.
