Alyssea usually kept it clean, only because there was no way for her to cheat in duelling. Her fists weren't exactly the best and everything about duelling was ranged. But nope. Not today. She decided being a menace would be more fun than cruising to the finish. When up against a bunch of upperclassman, her odds of actually making it to the end were low, anyway. It was truly a miracle she only managed to get blindfolded (by her own spell) and a few scrapes and scratches. I expected a bit more violence.

She sped up her broom, eyes fixated on knocking the only opponent in front of her. How does one blatch again? It just looked like a full-on body slam but mid-air. Alyssea bent over, hugging the broomshaft close, and manoeuvred into Astra's side. Sure enough, she went flying.

"Sorry!"

Alyssea wasn't really sorry, but she had some sympathy for falling a few feet without some sort of cushioned landing. She kept her stance as the winds picked up

Another person tumbled to the ground as one rose up. She slowed down to see the chaos. Colin had just fallen (yikes) but Piérre returned to his broom. Up ahead, Xailah was flying uncontested. Alyssea sighed. A loss is a loss.

Calming Presence in Effect;
Colin McCoire, Alyssea Brown, & Raizel Voltrouz Affected
Would he go back to Quidditch if a spot opened up for him as a Seeker? Well... the current reputation of the Gryffindor Quidditch team hadn't been exactly hopeful for the past few years. There had been entire team turnovers and repositionings, influxes of new faces and old faces taking their permanent leaves; even Evelynn and Alan themselves had come over to Dueling, just as Piérre had when he had decided it was time for a change of pace. He wouldn't really have anyone there that he knew--at least, not anybody there that he really felt he could get along with anymore. They were a different crowd, a different group.

And he simply wasn't one of them anymore. "I wouldn't fit there anymore." Was the final conclusion he made. The same way that he was starting to feel that he 'didn't fit' in the dueling realm either. He simply wasn't strong enough to close the gaps that so many top-tier duelists could so easily make, carving a hole in his heart before he could even have a chance to utter a single spell. He was so fragile, so breakable, and he had no arcane prowess worthwhile to speak of. His duels were won on the successes of his more powerful teammates; he was more of a bump on a log as opposed to a force to be reckoned with. "I'm starting to think that I'm not really finding any luck fitting anywhere in sports so far, but I want to do something with myself."

Still his eyes did light a bit as Xailah complimented him, in a way that made just the tips of his ears turn slightly red besides the pink that was already making itself known from the chill. Talented? Him? He blinked owlishly in turn, taken aback by the words, perhaps a bit more surprised than one would have thought him to be by such a simple and probably off the cuff and typical nicety of a phrase. One could probably have never known that the boy simply didn't have a track record of such compliments. His payment was usually in the form of detentions or exclamations--or cusses, for that matter--of unpleasant surprise whenever he dared to show his face. Still... that didn't seem to prevent him from thinking back every now and again, recalling times when it would have seemed that the universe itself had decided that the one thing that he considered himself the best at would instead become a colossal failure of his. It would seem that it happened far too often to be considered a fluke of luck, and more like something or someone was trying to put him into his place for some indiscernible reason. "Oh, I-- r-really?"

But he would be thrown off his broom before he could continue pursuing the thought. But with the evocative command to get to the finish line...

Well that should have been taken for granted immediately, shouldn't it have? Piérre wasn't a giver-upper. He was running as fast as he could with Luciana in hand, following a similar tactic as he had in the start by throwing the broom out before him and then leaping onto it in full to get maximum momentum. "C'monnnn.... C'monnnn!" He muttered under his breath, trying to 'spur' the broom faster and faster again. There was an end that he had to get to. He had to get there fast.

Thoughts
Other's Speech = Their Hex
Descended into the ranks of her fellow racers once more, in the face of what was likely her biggest obstacle on the course. The winds were a fearsome sight, especially just seeing the Phantom go down before her, yanked off of his broom by the invisible fingers of force.

Her grip tightened on the broomshaft of Cyrus, the trusty Comet 180, as she entered the High Winds.

Immediately, it became as if the young girl was being pushed, tilting slightly from the winds pushing. However, her grip held. Her hair threatened to come loose from its ponytail. Her eyes squinted even though they were protected. Astra kept close, tucked in tightly.

For a few moments, everything was a rush of howling wind, a red crested flash slicing through the air. For a few moments, she weaved between air pockets and continued flying at the highest speed she could.

For a few moments, all was well.

BAM.

In a single moment, it was not.

Astra's hands slipped from the broom handle with the impact of whoever was behind her.

This "whoever" was none other than Alyssa, the very person who had lent her the broom, allowed her to run the good race she had so far.

Astra's face was one of confusion and shock as she fell to the ground.

"Bugger."

"YAAAAAAAAAA - HAIIIIIII!!!!" Colin's cheer for Aly's blatching Astra turned into a scream!

He'd been zooming along quite nicely, smirking as Aly made her killer move! He was not at all unaware that, some time soon, he himself might be on the receiving end of one of the Badger's killer moves, but for now, they were on the same team, and knocking Ginger Snaps out of the sky was all well and good as far as he was concerned!

His cheering morphed into screaming, though, when, literally out of nowhere, a powerful gale blew down on them! Aly managed to power through it somehow, which impressed Colin. The high winds caught him, though, and Colin felt himself uplifted. And not in a good way! He found himself yote right off his broom! Vailerama rocketed skywards and Colin tumbled earthwards! He grabbed at his robes and flung his arms and legs out, trying to slow his descent!

Fortunately, he wasn't too high up! "OOF!!" Colin landed with a dull thud, a bounce and short roll across several sharp stones. The snot plug that had clogged up his nose flew free, undoubtedly blasted out of his nose by the pressure of the impact. At last, he came to a skidding stop. His legs were stretched out and he was, more or less, sitting upright, not two yards from Astra Norrick, Aly's blatch victim! He shook his head like a dog and gave his fellow Snake a broad smile. His usually messy hair was sticking out in every direction! "Ayo Snaps! Brilliant race, innit! Sorry aboot the blatch lassie, but ye know ---"

THAMMPP!!

Colin's broom, momentarily out of mind, took this opportunity to fly at maximum speed straight back down towards it master! Vailerama, true to form, impaled the earth right between Colin's legs! Colin's eyes crossed. His face turned pale and he felt sick. Colin moaned quietly. "Oh, that hurt," was all he could manage before passing out, his body collapsing onto the soft earth.

And it failed. She failed to cast a spell. Not only was she so behind, but also incompetent to raise the bar for herself. Wasn’t being able to cast spells the bare minimum to be a witch and she couldn’t even do that? Call her a pessimist, too hard on herself, not hard enough, the truth was she felt so disappointed. Nothing good came from this race, the girl couldn’t even mention a single good thing that happened since the beginning of this race.

“Stupid stupid stupid stupid race” Aurora mumbles, very pissed. If she were a raccoon, she would be a rabid one, ready to bite anyone nearby, whether or not they were threats or friends, it didn’t matter anymore.

Never again would she join an unofficial race or duel or quidditch if the end result would be her embarrassing herself in front of everyone. From now on she would only participate in actual things. At least if she loses there, it would be against actual professionals, not these amateurs. It made her blood boil just thinking about losing. Sure, her life motto was usually just have fun and do her best, but lately, it changed. Maybe this was her coming of age. Adulting, some might say, on the ripe age of fourteen.

Still, there must be a reason why she was being so unlucky. And she’ll get to the bottom of it. After the race.

And here it is, the Final Stretch. While it was clear who was gonna cross that finish line at first glance, things could still happen that could change the tide of this race.
Environmental Spells
Team Idinnae
COLIN MCCOIRE
Casting Incendio at UNIT 10 | WDC 12
Colin Wis [d20 : 15] + 12 = 27 | Success
Cheat DC 20
Colin Wis [d20 : 12] + 12 = 24 | Not Caught
Unit 10 is on fire

Team 2
XAILAH ALPTRAUM
Casting Diffindo at vines | WDC 12
Xailah Wis [d20 : 20] + 19 = 39 | Crit Success
TP Auto-miss 1-10 [d100 : 57] 57 | Nope
Moderate Vines DC -10
Raizel swears that she just looked away for a couple of seconds to see what is going on the track and the next thing she knew, fire had emerged out of nowhere when she looked over to one of the areas. While it did leave her wondering on how the heck did that fire break out, her attention quickly shifted to none other than Xailah. The 7th year had been showing her tons of spells that she hasn’t seen before and sure enough, she was eager for more. This time, it was a spell that she knows yet this is the first time she’s seeing it in action. Those vines were cut short in an instant with that powerful attack.
UNIT 10 - ON FIRE
Team 2
AURORA RANVIER
Aurora takes 5*9 = 45 burning dmg
775 - 45 = 730
Fire chance 1-30 [d100 : 51] 51 | Nope
Back to the Unit that was on fire, Aurora Ranvier just found herself being at the end of these constant misfortunes as that sudden flame must’ve caught her off guard, earning her a couple of burns but luckily, she was caught on fire. That’s a good thing at least.
UNIT 11 - HARD HIGH WINDS | STR DC 15
Team 2
AURORA RANVIER
Aurora Str [d20 : 16] + 8 = 24
Astra ends here
Still eager to catch up, the Ravenclaw girl didn’t let the winds knock her off unlike those that were ahead of her earlier. Her hold on her broom was firm, passing by Astra who had just gotten back on her broom and ready to fly once more. Colin had, sort of… found his place there on the ground as there are no signs of him getting back on his broom.
UNIT 13 - MODERATE SNOWFALL | STA DC 15
Team Idinnae
ALYSSEA BROWN
Alysse Sta [d20 : 5] + 9 = 14 | Fail
Alyssea takes 15-14 * 10 = 10 cold dmg
840-10= 830
PIÉRRE MARCHONNÉ
Pierre Sta [d20 : 19] + 7 = 26 | Success

Team 2
AURORA RANVIER
Aurora Sta [d20 : 12] + 9 = 21 | Success
Cold winds blew with moderate snowfall, all other racers didn’t let the cold bother them except for one, Alyssea Brown. One could see her shivering due to it, cold creeping up to her body, trying her best to endure the freezing weather.
UNIT 14
Team 2
Aurora end here
UNIT 16 - NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TREES | STA DC 28
Team Idinnae
ALYSSEA BROWN
Alyssea Eva Man, procs at 10 [3d10 : 10,1,7] 1 Success
Alyssea Acc [2d20 : 10,3] + 8 = 18, 11 | All fail
Alyssea takes 5 * 5 = 25 * 2 = 50 collision dmg
840-50 = 790
PIÉRRE MARCHONNÉ
Pierre Acc [3d20 : 2,9,6] + 15 = 17, 24, 21 | All fail
Pierre takes 5 * 5 = 25 * 3 = 75 collision dmg
650 - 75 = 575

Pierre and Alyssea ends here
Past the freezing cold weather and onto a patch of trees that are clustered together with only a few gaps in between compared to the last one. While Alyssea had easily avoided one tree with perhaps skill or maybe, luck, she wasn’t that lucky with the rest. But compared to Pierre who had found himself scratched and bruised after hitting every tree on his way, she isn’t doing too bad. The impact sure is bringing in bad memories. Hey, at least no one had passed out.
UNIT 19 - MODERATE VINES | ACC DC 17 - 10 = 7
Team 2
XAILAH ALPTRAUM
Broom Auto-miss 1-10 [d100 : 22] = 22 | Nope
Xailah Acc [d20 : 7] + 14 = 21 | Success
Those vines were the last obstacles to pass through in this race. Imagine getting caught in them with the finish line just before you. So close yet so far. But thanks to that spell that Xailah had casted, it was no challenge getting through, even when she’s at full speed. With nothing else in her path, the lioness had reached the finish line, ending this race and leaving quite an impression… for Raizel at least.

“Race Over!” The younger Gryffindor called out, a grin on her face as she felt satisfied with what she had seen. While she is no broom racer, she feels like she has learned a lot from this, especially when it comes to the usage of spells. “That was a brilliant race.”
FINISH LINE
Team 2
XAILAH ALPTRAUM
Crossed the Finish Line
Team 2 wins! thanks for participating in this race and being patient with me. Hope you all had fun. :D

Calming Presence in Effect;
Colin McCoire, Alyssea Brown, & Raizel Voltrouz Affected
"C'mon Marigold, let's get to the end of this." Piérre said determinedly to the Hufflepuff captain beside him. "We may not be the first one to cross the line, but I'll be damned if we don't cross it at all." Tightening his grip, Piérre set his jaw and narrowed his keen eyes, feeling the wind whipping past him once more. Behind him Colin and the rest of the unnamed team fell, including the weird Ravenclaw girl that had at first seemed to be the most intimidating racer besides Xailah herself. It was just Alyssea, himself, and Xailah at the head of the pack, with Xailah obviously scott free thanks to the fact that Piérre had had his unfortunate tumble back there.

"I could have caught her." He grumbled angrily to himself. "I could have done it." He nursed that little ball of hate for a few moments. "Just like I could be good at dueling." He rolled his eyes. "I could be a lot of things if I wasn't such a stupido, inutile idiota stupid, useless idiot." He scoffed. "I just piss people off at this point, don't I. That's all I'm really good for, isn't it." Through the snow they went. "Just a thorn in their sides. Trying to do my damndest to actually do something beneficial and I just end up making a bigger mess of things than when I started, and then I'm the one ending up facing the music." With all those that he had once been alongside now facing off against him instead. Instead of finding allies, instead of lessening his adversaries, they kept multiplying. Multiplying like rabbits, and Piérre couldn't seem to find a way to make that multiplication stop. First it was him as a bad luck charm, now it was him seeming to actively be cursed.

What the Hell was wrong with him? "All alone..."

'If you want to die that badly, do it on your own.'

Piérre internally sighed. Yeah... that was about right, wasn't it... It would be a befitting end, wouldn't it. A perfect conclusion to a self-destructive life that had been extended for too long. A life that perhaps hadn't been worth giving to him to begin with. Perhaps from now on it was a matter of time, a matter of who was going to be drug down with him or who he was going to drag himself down over or for.

Perhaps as a parting act he would be able to benefit someone in the end. Perhaps that would be the one and only redeeming grace that had made every wasteful breath of his up to that point worthwhile. He had come into this world with nothing, as a nobody... poetically, he supposed, it was only right for him to leave the world a nobody, and with nothing left behind or anyone who knew who he even was.

The trees ahead were knotted together tighter than a woven basket. Piérre had a feeling he was going to get a bit more than scuffed up in here...

And scuffed up he was, as he tucked his head down and shielded his neck, letting the trees not only swat him but send him spiraling with every hit until he was finally able to clear the obstacle altogether. Skidding out of the clearing, the boy already saw Xailah's broom having crossed the line, but still he pressed on. "Just do something right, you waste of oxygen." He muttered.

Getting through the vines was easy thanks to most of them being severed. Piérre could have probably made it through even if they hadn't been precut for him. With the last obstacle behind him, he finally came spiralling into the finish line, speeding past it and then hard turning the broom to the side so that he 'skidded' through the air before coming to a stop. For the first time in the past few minutes or so, he finally allowed himself to take a full breath and let out the pent up frustration that was built inside of his chest. He was... uncharacteristically angry. He didn't like it.

Blowing into his cupped hands and rubbing them together, he finally leaned back on his broom and just laid there, rocking the entire stick ever so slightly as if it were a hammock. He buried his fingers in his armpits, shivering ever so slightly and staring up at the slightly snowy skies. Puffs of white mist left him, every now and again a great gout of white steam. His heart was racing and only now just starting to slow. "Man, if I hadn't fallen off back there, I could have given you a run for your money, Xai." He said bluntly, kicking his feet lazily. "Age before beauty, I guess." He shot a flashing grin at her, his eyes gleaming still with phantom challenge. The earlier frustration able to be divined from body posture was... eerily absent now.

"WHOA." Colin awoke. The pain lingered. He still felt sick. Colin was used to it, the sickening queasiness, the dull throbbing ache. He'd been hit just there before. He could only have been knocked out for a second or two. Ginger Snaps was still nearby, getting back onto her broom.

He considered his options. Colin reckoned he and Snaps were only about half way along the course. He smirked. He could just wait until his mate got back on her broom and cast flipendo at her! Colin stood up. He quietened his breathing and listened. The wind brought him news. For a moment his heart lifted. It sounded much like the wind itself: a muffled whistling, a sussuration. It was surely the sound of distant kids cheering. And what could they be cheering but the end of the race!

He knew only the Xaila and Piérre were ahead of him, so surely one or the other of them were approaching the finish line! There wasn't anything he could do to help Aly or Piérre out directly. There wasn't anything he could do to Xailah, and there was just no point in attacking Snaps.

Colin smirked.

That left only one plan. He'd have to hit Aurora! There was no time to get in the air and knock her off her broom.

Colin smirked broader.

But there was more than one way to yeet a gnome! Colin knew she was behind and would be whizzing along any second! He got out his wand from its sheath on his right arm. He took aim along the track behind. He cast his spell: "INCENDIO!" Colin leaned on his broom, watching not ahead, but behind. His eyes smiled with mischief and amusement. He would greet his slightly toasty and smoked opponent as she flew by!

"Ayo Colin!" Astra greeted the stuffy Scotsman as she wrangled Cyrus from the skies. "Sorry about your cold, mate, but nothing personal, aye? A brilliant race inde-" She winced as his broom landed in an unfortunate spot. "Ouch."

She got back on the broom though, and, with a salute and a "Best luck to you, be seeing you around," prepared to zoom off again.

Astra noted that Colin didn't get back on his broom but instead got out his wand and roasted the unit behind them. Aurora! Astra's grip tightened on her broom as she waited for her teammate's appearance. "You're wicked, McCoire!" she called back to the boy on the ground, in no unkind manner. She had to admit, it would've been a good move, if there was more than one person behind them.

The Phantom, Alyssa, and Xailah were all ahead, and while Astra was bummed about losing her good spot from that blatch, she was happy to see Xailah secure the win. She was also happy to see Aurora up and at 'em while Astra and Colin ended up in last. It wasn't so bad for a first race. Wasn't too shabby at all.
