Colin was really happy that some kids took up his invitation to try out some outside-the-carton magic, as the Muggles are known to say! Honestly, as soon as he learned this in class, he had been eager to try it himself, and had failed miserably for quite a while, until he got better at magic. That and hawthorn wands could be tricky to master! A couple of the kids even stepped forward to give his lesson a try! Colin practically vibrated with excitement to see how they did!

The first girl to try was Estelle. "Ayo Estelle! Give it a try?" A strong lion! Colin remembered they had a really awesome talk about magical creatures once. He looked her in the eyes. He knew she was smart and well read, but could she bring the magic? That was the question! He smiled encouragingly as she took a mug and hot choco and filled it with cold water.

He wondered if she had doubted him, or whether she thought he playing some kind of elaborate prank. Colin smirked as Estelle got ready. This would have been an awesomé prank! But, Colin realised, he'd kind of been growing out of his pranking phase. This was magic after all, and he wouldn't prank anyone about something as exciting as magic! Colin readied his wand just in case something crazy happened.

The Gryff stuck her wand into her mug. She said the incantation. "Lumos." So far so good, Colin thought! But let's see what happens!
Y2 Rolls: 0 = explosion (damage 75 + ARC x 15); < 10 = fire or smoke (damage 50 + ARC x 10); < 15 = lumos; 15 to 100 = hot choco!

d100 = 20
Colin smiled at Estelle! She'd done it!

Next up was his own housemate Mahli. All through the lesson, she looked like she was on the fence about the whole idea. Colin couldn't blame her. As he remembered, they didn't exactly focus on making hot chocolate in charms class! It was really more a matter of some kid asked what would happen if you put too much magic into it!

Mahli practiced a few times, just to make sure she got the spell right. Colin smiled again. He was pretty sure she could do it! Well. Mahli was Slytherin after all! When she was sure, the young Snek came forward for a mug and choco. "You've got this Mahl," Colin said quietly.
Y2 Rolls: 0 = explosion (damage 75 + ARC x 15); < 10 = fire or smoke (damage 50 + ARC x 10); < 15 = lumos; 15 to 100 = hot choco!

d100 = 45
Colin's smile broadened. Neither second year had burst into flame or made anything explode! In stead, there were two nice steaming mugs of hot choco!

The third kid to take the plunge, another brave lion! "Go on Kaito lad! Give it a try! Don't worry --- if you die or something, I'll make sure to get ye to hospital wing!" And with that the first year gave it a try. At first, nothing, then nothing again! Colin almost died inside. He knew well the feeling of the magic just not coming out! Sometimes he felt his wand just didn't rise to the occasion; or maybe it was just something inside him. In any event, Colin said: "Try it again, lad."

And Kaito did. Third time's the charm maybe?
Y1 Rolls: < 10 = explosion (damage 50 + ARC x 15); < 25 = fire & smoke (damage 25 + ARC x 10); < 65 = lumos (no effect); < 95 = solid lumos; 95 to 100 = hot choco!

d100 = 8

Ouchies!

8 = Your mug explodes, sending shards of crockery all over the table! Kaito takes damage of 50 + (4 x 15) = 110. You can RP simple damage such as being bonked by a piece of mug or your ego being utterly destroyed!

Nice! We can RP in the hospital wing, Kaito! <3
Colin closed his eyes and turned from the shards of mug that flew his way! He was right in the path of the Gryffindorian disaster scene!
Colin's Auto-Dodge:
d20 = 1; no auto-dodge

Colin's Evasive (6):
d20 = 9 + 6 = 15; Colin avoids Kaito's reign of terror!
"WHOA!! Matey that was brilliant! You must have blown yer mug into a bajillion pieces!" Colin nudged the broken pottery into a heap and cast reparo on it. "Are you okay mate? Do you want to try again?"

Colin laughed merrily. This lesson was going brilliantly! "Come on Ren! Aly! You too Leon! Don't be shy, there're plenty of mugs for all of you to destroy!"

Staying in the Castle for winter break was a much pleasant experience contrary to what people would have you believe.

A 'home away from home', mum had told her a few summers ago.

Some would find it dreary to be stuck within the school walls, but Sage found comfort in being enveloped by magic that has stood the test of time. Though, being cooped up indoors for far too long can send someone off to the loony-bin and Sage, well, she had been feeling restless and antsy of late.

She'd planned to walk around the Courtyard that morning but decided against it at the last minute when something had fallen out of her cloak pocket.

An invitation of sorts to the Study Room for some hot chocolate. Strange, how'd that get in there? How suspicious. She was no stranger to pranks that'd started out from seemingly-harmless requests; she would know, wouldn't she? Still, she was curious and her stomach had been grumbling noisily for the past hour.

Giving Soot one last pet, Sage put on cropped cowl-neck jumper over a floral skirt and crimson bar shoes and headed out towards the Study Room.

Having arrived, the slender girl cautiously approached the room and peeped inside.

True to form, the room had its tables pooled together near the centre. Piled upon it were mugs and platefuls of pastries and assorted goodies and amidst the growing crowd of lunch-skippers, was a lithe-limbed tow-headed boy who was all too familiar to her.

Colin?

Sage felt a small twinge on her chest. Of course, Colin reminded her of a particular someone. They'd been close, like siblings, Colin and Soph. They were both wild, reckless things. She imagined Soph's disappearance had taken a toll on Colin, too, but Sage had been too preoccupied with her own grief to see it. Perhaps, it was the thought of their shared loss that tethered her to the doorway.

Can't keep running forever.

After a beat, Sage ventured into further into the room, sidling close to the tables, quiet as a mouse. She was here for hot chocolate, that's all (at least, that's what she kept telling herself anyway). She tugged at her jumper nervously and then forced her hands to grab a mug.

A crash startled her.

Colourful mugs were being slaughtered nearby; exclamations of 'Lumos' either made them into steaming cups of cocoa or blitzed them into high-speed ceramic projectiles. She heard Colin laugh mirthfully - well, at least one of them seemed happy. Merlin, what on earth was going on?

He would listen to what was being said. And while he isn't one to really be into learning, hearing what the older kid had to say got his gears turning. Having the ingenuity and the smarts to use a simple spell and make the most of it made Leon smile mischievously. While he himself isn't all that strong in the magic area, he can at least find ways to cast magic in his own way and to cause some fun while he's doing it as well.

He would grab the handle of the mug and lift it up to have his wand edge pointed at the bottom of the mug. He doesn't really know how much magic he should use, and doesn't know how much he has, so might as well go all out right? And if anything he cou-CRACK!

Looking over, Leon would see a mug shatter to a million pieces. Colin had egged them all on to try. Smiling mischievously, Leon would try indeed. If he can't make hot chocolate, it'd be fun to make a competition on how much destruction a Lumos can do. "LUMOS!" , the first year Slytherin would yell at the top of his lungs with extra gusto in hopes of either enjoying some hot chocolate or outdoing the smash the mug competition.

Estelle watched as a warm glow appeared within the chocolate. She doubted that the light would heat the chocolate - Lumos didn't produce that much heat after all. Pouring more magic into the wand, she felt it heat up as the light grew brighter. The mug grew warm. Just before the mug cracked, Estelle pulled her wand out. What lay in front of her was a perfect mug of hot chocolate.

Es ended the spell and felt the tip of her wand. It was very hot.

Who knew that spells could have extra uses! I'll have to do some experimenting.

She put down her wand and took a sip of her hot chocolate. It was perfect. The creamy, chocolatey mixture warmed her from the inside, making her smile. It reminded her of her grandfather's house.

When Estelle and her grandfather used to play in the snow, they'd come back inside grinning but freezing. Her grandfather would always make warm cups of hot chocolate. Es would clutch her mug tightly, loving the tingly, warm feeling the warm mugs gave her fingers.

She had to know where Colin came up with this.

"Hey, Colin. What gave you the idea for this? Are there other spells with uses I didn't know? Could you teach me?"

Colin was very pleased at how well the lesson was going! The first bunch had been a success with two mugs of aromatic hot chocolate and one lad bound for hospital wing so far! He smiled at Estelle. She seemed very excited to have learned this! "Actually, I got the idea in charms class! Professor hinted that spells sometimes have double effects --- like lumos's light and heat! If I learn any others, I'll be sure to let you know!"

As Colin looked around, a couple kids still hadn't stepped forward. "Aly! Renelle! Don't be such wimps! What's the worst that can happen? You get impaled by flying shards of crockery! But imagine the reward of learning a new magic!" Colin smirked. Aly, he knew, was a second year. She ought to be able to do this without too much difficulty! But he understood why Ren hesitated. Like Kaito, she was a firstie, and the likelihood of her getting it to work was practically zero. Still! Wasn't she a quidditch player? You needed to be a little brave and reckless to play that sport! He was hoping it might transfer to this too. But maybe not!

Colin took a sip of his own hot choco. A subtle movement caught his eye. A shadow from the doorway resolved itself into a newcomer. Colin peeked between the kids around the table. Colin gasped! His eyes opened wide: they were seeing something --- no, someone --- that Colin had thought died or disappeared!

"SAGE!" he cried out. Indeed, the girl that sort of skulked into the place, quite and mouselike, was none other than Sage Lilly, one of his best mates in first year! "Sage? I-I thought you were dead! Or at least taken out of school!" He hopped up, almost spilling his own choco, and dashed around the table to give his friend a big hug! "I-I haven't seen ye since So --- Er." Since Sophia disappeared. Or died. Colin never did find out what really happened. Colin bowed his head, not really sure what to say. The other kids would probably look at them all strange: why was this boy so excited about a girl he thought was dead? What's going on in this school?

He changed tack. "Well! I really am glad to see ye here Sage! I wasn't expecting this! Now you've got a mug, give it a try! If yer mug explodes I'll take ye to hospital with Kaito and get ye all fixed up!" He skipped over towards the first year Slytherin, Leon. He was keen on seeing how the young Ophidian would fare.

Leon got his mug and chocolate and cold water. Colin watched with interest. A glint of mischief played about the younger boy's eyes; and a smirk formed on Colin's lips. Whatever happened, this was going to be really good! With a suddenness that surprised even Colin, the little lad shouted the spell at the very top of his voice! "LUMOS!"
Y1 Rolls: < 10 = explosion (damage 50 + ARC x 15); < 25 = fire & smoke (damage 25 + ARC x 10); < 65 = lumos (no effect); < 95 = solid lumos; 95 to 100 = hot choco!

d100 = 80

HUZZAH LITTLE SNAKE!

Unfortunately, you don't have Lumos in your trunk! Whilst you wand fails to light, at least it didn't backfire on you or set your hair on fire! You can RP shock that your mug didn't explode, disappointment that your choco remains cold, etc! But at least no one needs to dodge the shrapnel!
"YAWOOOO! Spanking wand work, Leon! Too bad yer spell didn't work. But, look at it this way: ye're not dead!" Colin was actually very proud of Leon. They'd only just met, but the younger lad seemed to have something of the spunk and adventure that made Colin who he was. "Here, lad, give us yer mug." Colin took the boy's mug and stuck his wand into the sugary soup. "LUMOS!" he said with energetic force. The end of his wand glowed red and hot. Sticking it into the water, it began to steam and heat up! "Ye've got the energy, lad! Ye'll just have to practice controlling it!" he said as he gave the hot chocolate to Leon.

Colin wondered who would try next!

Thoughts
Not only had Mahlioz not exploded, but in her hands was now a mug of steaming hot chocolate (and a dripping wand, but she was too flabbergasted by the fact that her super-lumos worked that she hadn't noticed that bit yet). A few other kids tried, with varying degrees of success - one younger kid's mug exploded and he seemed hurt, but Colin didn't seem too worried, only asking if he was alright and laughing - but in all, everyone seemed to be doing alright.

Mahlioz grinned, looking suspiciously into her mug. She really had done it. Or rather, Colin's spell had. That was impressive. And it smelled just like hot chocolate. Tentatively, she took a sip, and it did not disappoint. "Dang!" She even burned her tongue. Who would have thought just a light spell could make something so hot?

The second first year had quite a bit more luck than the first, and though he unfortunately didn't manage to warm up his hot chocolate, nothing exploded this time. Good-natured Colin warmed the drink up for the boy. He really was quite a good teacher, Mahlioz thought. She'd completely forgotten her uneasiness about Renelle, or about the problems this spell could entail - she was having too much fun. "You got any marshmallow-procuring spells you could teach us?" she teased the white-haired boy. "As good as this is, everything is better with marshmallows."

Would it still be a reunion if there were just two fragments of a unit that will never be quite whole? Was that asking for too much? Sage wondered.

The gangly teen returned Colin's hug awkwardly but for a number of reasons: one, Colin had grown taller, in ways only a boy could grow in a span of a year; two, while she'd grown accustomed to Sophia's affectionate nature, Sage still had difficulty expressing herself and was generally wary around boys; and finally, she felt so awful for losing touch with him and Kim - did she deserve his kindness at all?

"I know. I'm sorry." Sage admitted her guilt, her lips pursed together. What kind of person couldn't even be arsed to keep tabs on her friends, right? "We've all been out of sorts since then."

Sage gave a one-shouldered shrug, suddenly finding the contents of her mug interesting. It was sort of hard to talk about her, especially with others around. Sage cleared her throat and mustered a smile.

"I'm sure it won't come to that!" quipped the young woman, attempting to match Colin's energy. She wanted to show Colin that she was willing to move on to happier things, as well. She owed herself that much, right? Sage peered at the boy Colin referred to as Kaito; she sincerely hoped none of the ceramic smithereens had injured him, no one ought to suffer for a mere mug of hot chocolate!

Slipping her wand from her pocket, Sage focused on the mug and muttered 'Lumos'. The tip of her wand flickered briefly... did it work, after all?

At the back of her mind, she truly hoped that the bridges she'd burnt could be rebuilt again. But thoughts were just that - thoughts, intangible, feeble promises - and unless she did something about it, nothing would change.
Action: Sage casts 'Lumos' on her mug.

Colin's focus shifted towards Sage. His green eyed gaze penetrated hers. He stared as she spoke. Quietly, like she didn't want to be heard. She mentioned being out of sorts since then. Colin knew what 'since then' meant. Sage and Sophia had been really close. Like sisters almost, he thought. So many friends had gone missing in the last two years. Colin's heart was battered by the memories. They just left. No messages. No trace. No adults to console them. A part of him was just beginning to think that this might be for the better.

At last she decided to give the experiment a try, and Colin's eyes lit up! This was more like it! Sage got out her wand. "You can do it Sage!" he cheered. Maybe a little cheering would help her along?

She cast her charm at the water.

"Lumos."

SWEET! Sage made a perfect mug of hot choco!
"Woohoo!" Colin shouted. "Sage totally screwed that in!" Mixed up muggle metaphors not withstanding, Colin was very proud of all of the kids that decided to come in and give their magic a try! "Right!" he said. "You lot did very well! That's the end of the lesson! No one burned their wands and everyone got some hot choco and treats!"

Colin beamed. This little activity had been a lot of fun! As he began to tidy up, his thought turned towards Sage again. The whole thing with Sophia leaving came back to mind, which naturally led to Kim. Aoki. One of his first friends --- along with Sophia and Sage and Gem. For much of the last year, they had all kind of disappeared. Sophia was really gone. Gem and Sage kind of receded into the background. Kim had become terribly withdrawn.

He had to say something. He'd been holding back too long. "Say, Sage?" Colin took a deep breath. "Have you talked with Kim recently? I- There's something wrong with Kim. He's not himself. I'm worried."
