Minnie pulled herself out of the water, her legs groaning with relief as she sat on the edge with Tracey. "Thanks guys. My legs were dying out there." She smiled, realizing that she was becoming more confident in their friendship. She was making friends! "And Tracey, it's super cool that we're both Metamorphmaguses, right?" She changed her hair color to a light brown with blond highlights to prove the point. "This has been a really fun swim. And I would love to swim with you guys later with supervision. It will be so much fun! We'll have to ask for permission though." She shrugged and looked at the caretaker.

I can't believe I made a friend with Tracey! She's so kind and caring! I have good luck with friends! Minnie smiled at her new friend. "And I don't need to hear the secret. It's all good. I just want to sit here and talk to you guys, so I don't need to spoil anything!" She informed Tracey kindly, knowing the girl just wanted her to not feel left out. And being left out was a feeling she knew. She shivered, thinking of a particularly bad day in the beginning of term. She started sliding into a memory, like with Opal, but nastier.

It was cloudy and dark in the great hall, the sky portraying the outside, and right now, Minnie's mood. She had gotten her bag ripped by mistake and her ink had spilled all over her potions homework, so she would have to do it over before lunch. But the day was about to get worse. She bumped into a girl by accident, and said sorry before looking up. She froze when she saw who she'd bumped into. It was a girl with cool jeans and cool black boots. Her shirt was a fashionable green crop sweater and a jean jacket. Everything from her boots to her expression radiated cool. And Minnie had just bumped into her.

"Sorry? That's all you have to say? You bumped into me. And you are nothing but an unpopular worm. Am I right?" She called out to the people around her at the last few words. The people around her jumped and looked at Minnie.

"Yeah. She's the worst. Mediocre Minnie!" One girl said. A boy walked up and said.

"She's so bad." Then all the people started yelling at her.

"Mediocre Minnie! Mean Minnie!"

Minnie jerked from her thoughts, trying to keep a positive face. "So...this has been fun?"

Kaitlyn flushed lightly as Tracey, followed by Minnie, exited the water. She was not ashamed of her body. On the contrary, she liked how she looked. But, it was the first time she wore a bikini in front of other people and was kind of hesitant in her new friends to see her in it. And yet, she didn’t want to be the only one in the water. She followed Tracey and Minnie, lifting herself out of the water. She sat next to her two friends, watching the tips of her toes graze the surface of the lake.

Katie giggled at Tracey’s story. “At least he helped. I don’t know how I would’ve reacted. I like Herbology,” she whispered back. Her eyes grew big as Tracey’s hair changed to all blonde. “Oh … wow. You look great with blonde hair,” she responded supportively, but still surprised. She never knew that some people could change their appearance so quickly. And make it look so seemless. It took her hours to just look put-together the muggle way.

As Minnie spoke, Katie smiled. “I’m happy you’re more comfortable out of the freezing water.” She tilted her head at what Minnie said. Both her and Tracey were metamorphmaguses? No wonder Tracey could change her hair so easily. She vaguely remembered seeing that word in a book once. She then saw Minnie change her hair to light brown with blonde highlights. And Minnie, too. “That’s so cool,” Katie said, in awe. She was shocked in seeing such displays of magic. “I think it’s awesome that both of you could change your appearance so easily. I think you look good in light brown,” she added with a smile, complimenting Minnie.

“I agree, I’d like to swim with both of you, too,” Katie responded with a smile. “Hopefully, when the water isn’t as cold as now,” she giggled. “I don’t know about you two, but I’d rather keep my toes,” she continued to giggle. She noticed Minnie looking distant but didn’t say anything. Rather, she just pushed a piece of her wet hair out of her face. Hearing Minnie’s statement … question, she tilted her head and smiled to her two friends. “I enjoyed it, and I like having a chance to hang out with both of you,” she said with a smile. While both girls have previously seen her be incredibly shy, she was a lot more comfortable around them.

Quinn said she didn’t think they were made out of puffskins. Matilde looked at the slippers again. They did look kind of fake… “You’re probably right,” she said, after a minute, trying to control her embarrassment, but also relieved. Matilde took a deep breath, smiling. She was determined to continue this conversation in a somewhat normal way.

Matilde was glad to hear that Quinn liked animals too. Quinn remarked that the water was really cold. “It was!” Matilde agreed, “I’ve never been in the water when it’s this cold out. What do muggles call it? A ‘polar plunge?’” She giggled. What a funny name. She wasn’t quite sure why she had decided this was a good way to spend her Saturday. She supposed it was because she had nothing better to do.

Quinn asked if she had any pets. “Yeah, I do!” Matilde said excitedly, she was always happy to talk about her pets. “I live on a sheep farm. We also have a dog, owl, donkey, a few chickens, and a bunny. I bring her to Hogwarts.” She was sad that Quinn’s dog had died, but she was glad she had lived a long life.

She thought about what else she could ask Quinn. “What house are you in?” She decided. “I’m a Hufflepuff.”

Sunny was overjoyed to have an activity outside the Hogwarts castle, and was tickled to see so many students had all showed up. He careened his neck to see over the boy in front of him, eyeing the shiny tigers eye that was smooth and glossy. In fact, everyone in front of him was, and as the line got shorter, it was as if the volume of the students in line got quieter, the anticipation palpable on the air.

Sunny imagined what he would write on that beautiful shiny rock, and fretted about throwing such a beautiful thing away, into the lake. He hadn't given much of a thought yet to the cold water, though. He imagined what he would say. Careful, neat words that would make his parents proud.

When it was Sunny's turn in line to receive a rock, he did not get the tiger's eye, nor did the boy in front or behind him. Sunny didn't know what would become of it, because all he could do was gaze at the flat, grey rock speckled with ash colored dots, and having a greenish hue. All of the careful words of his success went as fast out of his head as a messenger owl. Dumbly, he followed the line. Dumbly, he stood in front of the water. He watched the boy ahead of him begin to write on the rock, then cross it out, then start again.

Sunny sat, but the ground was too cold, so he settled for crouching as he saw a few other students do. What could he say? What could he let go of? He was scared of so many things, he was carrying so many things with him, and they all felt vital. He could not let go of his family, his devotion to them, his need to get good grades, his fear of not performing academically, his fear that his favorite creatures back home were getting good snacks and pats, that the family business was doing well, his fear of his Aunt Bee getting sick again, that he might be needed at home, that his baby sister might get sick, or that he might be called back home. Most of all, he was afraid of flunking the school year.

He wrote that. He wrote 'Not getting straight E's' on his rock, and had to flip it over to finish the last two words. He stared at it, but even looking at it now, he was not ready to let go. He needed this. He looked around at the other students desperately, and saw one in just the same predicament, marked by their wild, wide eyes, as if searching for danger. The student curled their fist around the rock and rose their courage. Sunny looked back to his rock. He would just have to do the same. It wouldn't be betraying his family to not be afraid of not getting good grades, right? Right? He felt hollow.

Numbly, he stooped to take off his boots and socks, then his jacket and outerwear, leaving his swimming trunks. The sand was clammy and wet and slightly sharp from the many tiny pebbles. Barefoot, he walked up the beach to the tide, feeling the tide foam lap on his ankles and make him feel colder.

Afraid, he walked until the waves were hitting his chest, then he began a lazy breaststroke. He was a good and strong swimmer when the water didn't rip away the warmth. He managed a paltry swim, then kicking his legs to keep afloat, held his hand above the water, and opened it. He was afraid as he watched the stone give a little 'plop' as it hit the water and broke the surface tension. He was afraid as it began to sink. He ducked his head under water for a moment, immersing himself completely to watch it sink to the bottom.

He re-emerged from watching the stone a moment later, then unceremoniously swam back to shore, too cold to think. He thought he would feel scared still. But instead, all he felt was tired. It was different, lighter, even.

Aly Salinger
Observing Aly

The chill was the first thing she noticed. It bit, piercing right to the bone with its fangs. It was expected of winter weather, but today's felt particularly vengeful. Dressing in nothing more than a swimsuit- and a loosely tied robe- did little to help this theory. The fabric draped across Xailah's slender frame could not stymie the testy nips from a stiff breeze, making her shudder slightly. Pale frost billowed out from between her lips as she watched peers engage in the activity laid out for them. Between the bitter weather and the thought of jumping into a freezing lake, she was surprised the event had gathered this much attention, especially from the younger students.

Maybe when one thought about it, it wasn't all that shocking. The concept of a Polar Plunge (so caretaker Finley called it) was something new and exciting, many students- including Xailah herself- would be experiencing it for the first time. With that perspective, it was certainly an activity worthy of great numbers. And, to be fully honest, leaping into the partially thawed lake sounded far more fun than it did daunting.

The lioness was perfectly content with watching others perform the Polar Plunge ritual, for the first few minutes of the event. Seeing how different students reacted to the lake and their symbolic rocks, was incredibly interesting. While some regarded both tasks with hesitance, there were just as many who took the concept in their arms and ran with it. Literally. Into the lake.

Splashing, accompanied by laughs and yelps of surprise, fell on the wind like music. Xailah drank the energizing warmth the sounds had to offer, finding them filling. She'd steep in their echoes while she picked through the ritual rock pile, in search of a good sinking stone. A flat one caught her eye; round in sculpt, but weighty in feel- just what she was looking for. Taking up a marker in her free hand and uncapping it, she brought the nib to the stone. She did not write anything right away; leaving the marker to hover while she peeled through her thoughts. What more did she need to let go of? She had freed herself from so many ties during the past few years in favor of taking back control of her life, but something was still holding her fast. She didn't want to admit such, but she could feel it. With hesitation, she would eventually scribe something onto the stone; slowly and carefully, as to not smudge the ink. Then, with her decision made, she capped the marker and returned it to its station.

A laugh unlike any of the others reverberating in the fray, made Xailah's ears pique. It was a weeping howl of a noise that came from someplace deep, and it was only natural for her to turn and seek the cause. A girl, presumably around her age, stood chest-deep in the lake; her head- a coiled wreath of gold and warm brown- was thrown back, revealing the young lady as the source of the sound.

The Gryffindor couldn't help but lend an ear.

She was bearing witness to mania. Raw, unburdened, sorrowful mania. It poured out of the girl's throat; ricocheting into the sky and rippling across the lake. And while perplexing at first glance, it was something spectacular on a deeper level. It was the revelation of a death and the beginning of a rebirth. And, for some reason she could not explain, Xailah found herself feeling happy for this stranger. Smiling to herself, she watched the girl release her defiant cry into the frigid air.

She was alive, and she was letting the world know. Good for her.

After what seemed like forever, the wild-haired girl pulled herself from the water and sought the comfort of shore. The metamorph continued to observe her, wordlessly- until their paths briefly crossed. "Whatever you let go of must have been very heavy, if it made you laugh so sweetly." Xailah offered the stranger a passing smile while she prepared herself for her turn on the lake.

Standing at the edge of the shore she shed her robe like a second skin, allowing the loose fabric to fall in a ring around her ankles. A flurry of snow lapped at her bare shoulders and stomach until they turned translucent pink. The sinking stone was clasped tight in a fist, her slender fingers barely fitting around its girth. Briefly, her eyes flickered down as she thoughtfully turned the rock over in her palm, glimpsing at what she had written.

Loose Ends, the rock read in black ink and neat cursive.

Xailah gently thumbed over the stone's rough surface, contemplating. Yes. That was what she needed to finish severing: all the loose ends she had gotten herself tangled up in over the years. All the guilt. All the secrets. All the things she would take to the grave. The last of her burdens that were preventing her wings from fully spreading.

She was certain that was it. This year was the year she finished things. It had to be. She could not risk fraying, not after how far she had come.

Nodding, she clasped her closed hand with the rock over her chest and took a step back. She breathed- a series of short, cold puffs- to ground herself in the moment as she gazed upon the frozen pool of blue awaiting her. Not keen on wasting time, she broke into a swift sprint both urgent and weightless; its speed only broken by the panther-like lunge that would send her into the lake. Her eyes closed and her body stiffened as she fell-

Down.

Down.

Down- until her body was baptized fully in frost. Relaxing her hand the rock slipped free, sinking into darkness with the many others that had been cast into the lake before it.

She wouldn't come back up. She had five minutes to bask in frozen serenity before hypothermia set in, and she was going to use all of them.

After Tracey had pulled herself out of the water, she saw Minnie join her and then Kaitlyn did as well. Tracey then heard Kaitlyn reply to the story she had told her, then she heard Minnie speak, and she looked at Minnie and noticed that she had changed her hair color to prove the point. Tracey smiled at the two of them then said,
"Your welcome Minnie! Yep, we both are Metamorphmagi! Kaitlyn, d'you know what that is? Ok, so imma tell you anyway. I was leaving greenhouse 1, but then I realized that I had forgotten something, and I turned around to go back, and when I returned, I saw a fellow Ravenclaw, and he had just dropped two pots! I went into the greenhouse and got what I had left, and then two other students came into the greenhouse. In the end, the boy helped us clean up, but he was kinda forced to help, since he was going to leave. Thanks, Katie! I think this color suits me good!"
Tracey then took a break since she had said a lot, so she didn't speak for a while. She was happy to have Minnie and Kaitlyn as her new best friends. She was also happy she has a friend that has the same ability as her. Tracey had also told Minnie the story anyway, since she wanted her new friend to know.
"We could swim during the warmer months. Maybe during Spring break if you guys aren't going home. I also enjoyed this. It was really fun. I got to meet you two and become friends with the two of you as well!" Tracey said happily.

The cold air hit Madi, and she shivered. She wrapped her arms around herself, attempting to warm up. She regretted not bringing a sweater to put over herself as she waited to get into the lake or after she'd gotten out, but it was too late for that.
Her bathing suit left little protection to the cool January air. She shook as he stood with the other students, listening to Professor Greer give out instructions. As soon as she was finished, she joined the line to get a rock, thinking about what she wanted to put on it. There were many things she wanted to leave behind in 2023. She didn't know what to choose.

When she made it to the rocks, she picked up the first one that caught her eye. It fit perfectly in her palm, and as she ran her hand along it she discovered it was very smooth. It was a lighter gray than some of the rocks. After picking the thing she wanted to leave behind in 2023 and a brightly colored marker, she wrote three words across her rock in the nicest lettering she could manage. Worries and Nerves. she wrote across it, and then thought about those words.

Madi had always let her worries control everything she did. If she wanted to do something, her brain would immediately conjure up a list of pros and cons, and most times the cons beat out the pros. Her mind gave her all of the negative aspects of things, which often left her afraid. That was why Madi had never thought for a second that she might have had a chance to be sorted in Gryffindor. And she was done with this. She was done with all of it. She was going to leave behind her worries and nervousness in 2023, and hopefully they wouldn't come back in 2024.

The minute she was allowed to run, she took off soaring toward the lake. The cool air whipped her brown hair behind her, flying as she tore toward the lake. Once she hit the lake, the temperature bit into her. The cold hit everywhere. Her legs trembled, but she made it as fast as she could until the freezing water hit the base of her neck, her shoulders barely above the water. She reached out, holding the rock firmly, and let it fall out of her hand. She watched it fall slowly down to the bottom, hoping her nervousness and her worries left too.

After releasing her rock, she swam a little deeper into the lake, and then let herself be fully submerged. The cold stung everywhere, but it was refreshing in a way. She swam out back onto the shore, her long brown hair sopping wet, clinging to her shoulders. She walked out of the lake and onto the shore where she quickly found her towel and sat on the ground, her towel wrapped around her, watching the lake and smiling. She was glad to have done this.

Minnie smiled."I would love to swim with you guys when it gets warmer! That would be awesome." She replied, although Tracey hadn't really asked a question. I really enjoy being with them. She thought, unable to keep her thoughts from it. Reminds me of Perry and Theo a bit. She sighed wistfully in her head. But the past is the past. I'm over it. I'm over everything. I really love it here so I don't need to worry about home. But I really should owl Theo. It's been a while and I haven't talked to him since...2023. She thought guiltily. I don't want him to think I'm mad at him. That wouldn't be good.

Minnie kicked her feet back and forth in the water a little."I really enjoy you guys as well. And I definitely want to keep being friends. It's been so much fun talking to you!" She looked at the sky, which was pretty and blue."So...are you excited about the slippers?" She asked. It seemed like a good question to her. She certainly was. Fuzzy, warm, cozy, slippers? Count me in! Reminds me of what Theo would say to that. He would say, "I hope they're not real animals!" and make me laugh. I miss him. She sighed, and a tiny bit of it came onto her voice. She blushed. Please don't notice. Please don't. I can't cause any more trouble today. I just can't So she tried to stop thinking about Theo. But a memory bubbled to the surface, and she had to watch it.

Minnie scrambled along the branches, looking for a good place to read in peace. The town was staying far away, and her sadness spilled onto her hair, which was a dark blue. She was fine with that. Let them know she's a metamorphmagus. It's all fine. At least, that was what she told herself. But she knew it wasn't true. Which was why she was looking for a hiding spot among the rough branches of the tree instead of in the village hearing the whispers and seeing the horrified stares. Even the pure-bloods thought it was odd. Strange. Abnormal. Even for a witch like her. She couldn't take it anymore, so she ran to the one spot that she could think of; the old oak tree at the edge of the square.

She found a comfortable place, and was about to start reading when she heard a whisper like a breeze come into her ear. Someone was whispering (quite loudly) about her. "She's so strange. I don't know what I would do if I were her parents. Throw her out perhaps. But I want her gone. She's a weirdo. Anyone who can change their appearance is bad I say. Who agrees with me?"

Minnie held back her sob until she was sure everyone was gone. Then they came. The great, shattering tear came, and she started to cry. She was still crying when a few minutes later, the leaves rustled. She stopped for a second, hiccuping."Who's there? I know someone's there." She choked out. Her crying stopped as a boy about her age climbed up the tree.

"Hi. I'm Theo, and I don't care that you're a metamorphmaleixe or something like that.I'm a squib myself, so I'm an outcast as well. What can I do to help?"

She went out of the memory, smiling, and hoping no one noticed what she had been thinking. I will definitely make an owl to him.

I don't break the rules, I expand them for my need.

Emma was shivering. She had underestimated the chill of the breeze when she decided to wear just her jeans, a long-sleeved shirt, a hoodie and a winter jacket. She had a toque shoved on her head, and her Hufflepuff scarf wrapped around her neck and the lower part of her face. Her feet were covered by the thickest socks she had and she was wearing the new winter boots she had gotten for Christmas, the dark green holding up against the cold wind somewhat well contrary to the rest of her outfit. Then she had two pairs of mittens on her hands, knowing her fingers always felt the worst when it came to the cold. And the breeze just seemed to stream right through the layers of clothing. Debating turning around, Emma half turned, but something stopped her. Maybe she was ready for a change, maybe it was just something that the New Year made her feel needed to be done. Who knew, but after several moments of standing frozen like an ice sculpture, she sighed, the moist air settling on her face as the scarf prevented its escape before turning towards her original designation, the Great Lake.

It took several moments, and she still felt like she was never going to be warm again, but at least she seemed to make it to the right place. A group of students were in or around a sectioned off part of the lake, with Professor Greer standing near the crowd. She did her best to get close enough to hear the instructions but it seemed that the wind was not on her side as she seemed to miss some of it.

Deciding she knew enough, she held back, waiting for a space to open to pick her rock. She moved forward after 5 or so minutes, surveying her choices. She saw a few that were on the smaller side but they wouldn't work for what she had in mind. Finding a slightly larger rock, one that's edges were rough and uneven, she picked it up, weighing it in her hand. Deciding that this was her rock, she moved toward the markers, finding one that hadn't quite made it back into the box Professor Greer had had them in. Grimacing as she tried to hold the marker well enough to write with her mittened right hand, she realized it was hopeless. She groaned as she also realized that in order to remove her boots and socks, she would need to remove her mittens.

Pulling one mitten off, she was able to grab hold of the second and pull it off with only minor difficulty. She stuffed that set into her left hand pocket, quickly grabbing the other set off her right hand and stuffing them into the right hand pocket. Doing her best, it took her three tries before she got the lid of the marker off. Trying to find some way to hold the marker, lid and rock in her quickly chilling hands, Emma realized it was hopeless after fumbling the lid a couple of times. Placing the lid in between her teeth, she moved to write down her thing she wished to leave behind. Across the rock, she wrote rather crookedly, other people's judgements. She was tired of trying to guess what others were thinking of her or letting their opinions or actions cause her to lose sleep or stress. She just wanted to be free of all the overthinking that came along with all of that.

Placing the lid back on the marker, though it took two tries for her chilly fingers to match the lid with the marker successfully, Emma carefully dropped the marker back into the box. Moving towards the lake, she stopped near the water's edge, leaning down and untying her boots one-handed. Pushing and pulling, she almost dropped both her boot and her rock as she got the first boot off. Placing her rock carefully in the boot, she repeated the process with her second boot. The socks quickly followed, and both were shoved into one of her boots.

Picking the rock back up, she moved closer, pausing just before the water reached her toes, wondering if she was really going to do this. Looking at the rock in her hand, she tightly closed her eyes, just as tightly gripping the rock. Emma gasped as she stepped into the water, she took two large steps in before reaching her hand with the rock out in front of her and instructing her hand to release it. It was hard, but it felt positive to feel the weight leave her hand and the satisfying plop as it hit the water. She moved quickly back to her boots, grabbing them before heading to the Professor, realizing her feet were wet and she really didn't have the energy to try to struggle to get her socks back on.

Kaitlyn could not help but to giggle as Tracey talked a lot. She was glad to see her friend comfortable enough to talk for that long. She didn’t think she was capable of that, yet. But, who knew just how comfortable she would be eventually. “I think so. Metamorphmagi,” she repeated with a smile. “You and Minnie can change your outward appearance like your hair,” she responded, thankful that her memory was correct. She giggled at Tracey’s recount of her story. “I’m glad everything worked out, then. You’re welcome, Tracey. I’m happy for you,” she smiled brightly.

Katie smiled. “I’d like that. I think it’ll be enjoyable for us to swim together,” she nodded. “Aw, yes, I agree. I’m happy to meet both of you. You two seem so much fun to be around, and I enjoy talking to you two. I already feel pretty comfortable talking to both of you,” she smiled confidently. At Minne’s question, she was reminded of what they were supposed to get after the plunge. “Oh, yes. I’m excited. I may still wear my flip-flops, but the slippers sound so comfortable. I imagine they’ll be divine to wear next to a fireplace, maybe even drinking a cup of hot cocoa,” she suggested with a smile.

At a lull in the conversation, Katie noticed Minnie sigh a little and then look distant. She looked down at her feet as they continued to skim the surface. She didn’t know if she should mention anything. If it was her, she’d rather her friends not say anything … Actually, no, that wasn’t right. She’d rather they express interest in checking up on her. ‘I hope she doesn’t mind. I enjoy having Minnie as a friend.’ She took a glimpse at Tracey, unsure of what to do. ‘Oh, I think I should check.’

When it looked like Minnie was paying attention again, Kaitlyn looked over at her. “Um, Minnie. Is everything all right? I heard your sigh before. You don’t have to tell me anything if you don’t want to. I just want to make sure you’re all right, as your friend,” she said, giving Minnie a friendly smile.
