The Carnival Has Started

The procession moved on the shouting is over. (B. M. Perry & L. G. Gerrard, The Carnival is Over)
Lessons were over for the day, and twelve-year-old Maverick Castle gloomily walked from his last class, Flying. It was normally one of his favourites, but this afternoon he was just very tired and his heart was weary for knowing the following days' classes would not be postponed even though on Friday evening there was the interscholastic gala, an event promoted as a friendly event to maintain positive relationships between magic schools (but now was nothing more than the students' excuse to show off their clothes and their dates, Maverick knew it).
He walked fast, though without destination: to the greenhouses, then the Campgrounds. He chuckled as he spotted a couple of students, clearly from other schools. Some of them looked busy, whereas others more relaxed - chatting, observing whatever scene was unfolding before their very eyes. For some reasons, what he saw reminded him of summer two years ago. He had just taken interests in songs he bet his bottom dollar very few other people his generation even tried to listen to, thanks to Uncle Francesco and his Muggle radio. And then Google hypnotised him, used by the boy to search for numerous song lyrics.
One of these songs was The Carnival is Over, the one sang by Australian band The Seekers, but his novice Googling skill led him to the one by (must have been some stupid band) Dead Can Dance. He immediately realised that it had been a wrong song, of course, but he had to admit its lyrics was not bad. In contrast to The Seekers' more metaphorical "carnival", the one featured in the other song seemed to be a literal carnival.
And these students across of him kind of reminded him of the DCD's lyrics. (Not that he was sure it was their real acronym, he merely 'invented' it for his own personal use.) Only that, instead of packing up, the foreign pupils were settling down.
Maverick decided that he was satisfied after some time. He started walking back, toward the school building, but he did not realise that his watch had just fallen, now resting on the ground.

The world is in despair not because there are many bad people, but because there are many good people who do nothing.

Nate was lost. Very lost.
He had been looking for the library, but after some wrong turns and an accidental trip to the girls' bathroom, he had ended up outside.
Nate knew how confusing schools could be, and doubted that he had the ability to find the library himself, so he would have to ask another student. The question was, did he have the confidence?
The answer was no. Nate tried to get the attention of several students, but could not quite bring himself to converse and had quickly abandoned all hope of finding the library.
If only I had more confidence.
He looked down at the ground, annoyed at himself and his inability to communicate. The grass swayed gently in the light breeze.
Suddenly, a watch fell onto the ground in front of him. He picked it up, knowing that this was just the thing to begin a conversation.
The boy that had dropped it was just ahead, clearly unaware of the loss of his watch. He was smaller than Nate, but then most students in Nate's year and the one above were. His height was one of the reasons he was so well-suited to being a Keeper. Nate tapped him on the shoulder, holding out the watch.
"Hey, you dropped this."
