Estelle had decided to completely change her hair colour. For the first term of her second year, she had had various shades of pastel pink and blue in her hair, but now she felt that she wanted a change.
The question was, what combination of colours?
Estelle laid out all of her colours, thinking about which combination would suit her best. She didn't want to return to the pink or the blue for now, so she put them to one side and assessed the rest. She liked green, but on the few times that she'd tried it as a chalk it hadn't really fit her vibe. It probably would look better on someone with brown hair, or even a very pale blond, but she certainly couldn't pull it off. She put green to one side.
Orange and yellow were too close to her natural colour, and the more natural ginger would probably look good, but not on it's own. She'd have to find another colour to combine it with, but it was a promising option.
Purple felt too close to last year's hair so she discarded that one too. That left her with red, ginger, brown and black. Estelle worried that black and brown wouldn't fade quickly enough - she could try them, but only with chalk. If they didn't fade, Es would no longer have as much freedom to dye her hair and she certainly didn't want that. So into the discard pile they went.
That left her with ginger and red. It was a very promising combination and Estelle could easily see how it could pan out. She had made her decision.
Estelle grabbed the ginger, put on the plastic gloves and used the paintbrush to apply it to her roots and scalp. She let it continue to the tips of her ears, with a few longer streaks here and there, before getting out her red. She had left a gap where some of her natural blond hair would shine through, creating a nice ombre effect as the colours faded into one another.
Estelle then applied the red from about two thirds of the way down her ears to the tips of her hair. Finally, she wrapped the lot in strips of tin foil and waited for it to develop. Half an hour might be a while, but she had plenty of cleaning up to do before she could relax.
