Before Evelynn had any sense that something was amiss, water shot forward at an awkward angle towards Vanes. She didn't even react, momentarily frozen as the jet streamed in entirely the wrong direction. By the lack of surprise on her countenance, an onlooker might even have grounds to believe the friendly-fire might even have been on purpose. Such suspicion might even have been supported by the twitch at the side of her mouth when the water crashed harmlessly beyond him; that is until a darkened visage, eyes narrowed, turned itself back towards the Ravenclaw team. Pursed lips drew to a thinned line as fingertips readjusted and hardened their grip on the sleek handle of an elegant walnut wand. The apathy that had cloaked the ginger in her arrival to the match fell away, her stance shifting to the aggressive.

The duel had been been slow so far, and Julian was starting to see why. It seemed you really needed to get the conditions of a duel to favour you when among such experienced opponents. Though more aggressive spells were starting to roll in, most of them missed, with both Evelynn's and Callie's gusts of wind missing all their targets, Dealla's attempt to conjure another jet of water sputtering out at the tip of her wand, and Evelynn's. Galton was marginally more successful, managing to hit Dealla with the Conjunctivitis curse (and making Julian wince at the thought), even though the beam he'd directed at Callie skirted past her by a few inches.

Meanwhile. Alan and Pericles were sticking with the more strategic manouvres, with Alan conjuring thick ropes to bind Callie's arms, effectively taking her out of commission until she could find a way to get herself free, and Pericles using Ventus to send the storm cloud back to his opponents.

Without hesitation, Evelynn moved to correct the erroneous inaccuracy that had nearly cost her team. Wand again pointed to Callie, a gust of wind expelled from its tip. As it happened, she wasn't the only one with such a notion. Fingers hastened to pull loose strands from her face to clear her vision as air currents from several origins fought for dominance. Dark school robes snapped and buffeted around her; she had to widen her stance for stability. Unsurprisingly, her spell didn't quite achieve the effect she'd hoped for, but neither had she fallen victim to the one Callie had aimed for her. If Evelynn could hold the girl's attention, perhaps her teammates could whittle down the other two. And when cords appeared, wrapping themselves to bind Callie like a straight jacket, the shadow of a vindictive smirk tugged at the corner of the ex-seeker's mouth.

Man, this sucked. If this was the type of match ups that were the norm these days perhaps duelling didn’t have the same shine it once did. At least to Callie anyway there was little fun in being repeatedly beat down by older and stronger opponents. Was this payback for telling her opponent they stank? Was this the whale from a past life coming back to haunt her? Or maybe it was a wronged ex love from a former life seeking their revenge? Whatever it was crafting her own little theories regarding her misfortune was providing some much needed distraction in an otherwise painful duel.

It really did seem that the Ravenclaws were hellbent on giving them a shower. While Dealla didn’t end up producing any magic, it was clear she was on a mission to further soak some of the lions. To top it off, Callie had tried to give him a blow dry. Was he in a duel, or a hostile hair salon? Whatever it was, it was fun.

Alan decided to try something a little more risky. Or at least for the style of duelling he usually would use, it was quite risky to use a more advanced spell. Though despite that he had full confidence, especially due to him having a knack for Transfiguration spells. And so the concentration to cast the spell came to him with ease and manifested in binds that would wrap around Calli's torso, binding her arms in place and perfectly restricting her movement.

For someone who hadn't failed a spell in... well, more than two years, Dee handled her sudden, unexpected failure remarkably well. Meaning, she stared at her wand dumbfoundedly, as if the few spluttering drops of water she'd produced had taken all her wits with them. "Are you serious?" she asked out loud, aimed at no one in particular - mainly, perhaps, her wand - which was of course not very useful in a duel, as she was reminded of rather painfully a moment later.

"Merlin's striped boxershorts!" Dee cursed emphatically when Galton's spell hit her and her eyes immediately started swelling painfully. What was this new and fun torture they'd come up with for this duel? It was hard to keep them open, even the slightest, so she ended up squinting at blurred shapes across the piste, even while her eyes started leaking tears. She wanted to rub them, but they were still in the middle of a duel, although she might have forgotten it for a second just now.

This whole thing really wasn't going very well, was it?

Pericles typically sought out new experiences, but his first time witnessing both Oculitumescere and Fulgari in a duel would have been less unpleasant had they not hit his partners. He had winced when Dee's spell failed: he knew her well on the stage, and he knew how hard she took a dud cast. But when he witnessed her eyes swell, the lids gone puffy and red, he visibly cringed. "It's not... that bad," he tried to reassure her, but Pericles had always been an absolutely atrocious liar.

Given Callie's current incapacitated state, it was no surprise at all to Julian that two out of three Gryffindors--Evelynn and Alan--shot spells in her direction, twin gusts of wind racing across the platform to where she was standing. Julian was rather impressed that Callie managed to dodge one, but she was still caught up in Alan's spell.

Galton, meanwhile, had also cast another Ventus, but not at Callie. Instead, he directed it at the cloud looming over the platform, continuing what had very nearly become a game of ping pong between the two teams. Not that Julian could begrudge the strategy. So far, all duellists remained unharmed by the storm brewing up above then. He was summarily rewarded by a jet of pressurised water stemming from Pericles, directly to the gut. It was enough to make Julian wince.
