Baby Birds (And A Snake)

november 25th, 2023 | 10:00 | racers academy
The winter was finally starting to take its hold as Alyssea walked down to the Outdoor Club Area with a winter jacket. She fought the shivers and waited around for the First Years she was hosting this race for. Alyssea purposefully made the track a little less menacing than she normally would; her last track had some pretty nasty tricks but they were a more experienced lot.
She had started a racing club to get more people in on the sport and gotten Ying and Zach in on it to help her run it. Since Alyssea was one of the newer captains, she wanted to have some veterans by her side in case she did anything wrong. Mistakes were bound to happen, after all.
As the little First Years arrived at the snowy fields, brooms in hand, Alyssea cleared her throat. "You're all quite the tough cookies for actually coming out in this weather," she chuckled, "The track's not very long since we don't wanna be out here for too long. Just fly, don't hit anything too hard, and have fun."
She let them bumble about at the starting line and, with a lift of her right hand (left arm tucked under her armpit because she was trying to keep herself warm), she quickly sent it downwards while yelling, "GO!"

𝓛et the record reflect that, had the allure of a race and a new broom to test out in it not been such an enthralling siren song to Bex, she would have never otherwise been willing to step so much as one toe out into this weather. As it was, she was shivering pitifully as she stood alongside her other two teammates, her brown curls slightly damp from the snow and her nose a flush cherry red. The need to go as fast as possible had outweighed logic or reason (as it usually did for Bex, when it came to sports) and as such she was not dressed nearly as snugly as she typically would be for the season.
Her broom, however, presumably could not perceive temperature, and was buzzing just enough to be noticeable in her hand. After the rather, uh, eventful Ravenclaw vs. Slytherin Quidditch match at the end of October (notable for it's exceptionally high body count), her dad had finally seen the wisdom in getting her her very own broom. As he put it, if one's daughter must willingly put herself in the path of large, flying iron balls, then at the very least she should have a broom that would slightly lower her chances of falling to an early death.
She could tell he was excited for her though, despite his worries. While he'd never had the talent nor inclination to play himself back when he'd been at Hogwarts, he'd been an avid fan of the professional level for Bex's whole life, and a lot of their time together had been spent watching Quidditch, playing Quidditch, and talking about Quidditch. He'd probably prefer that she was playing something other than beater, but Bex had rarely ever taken his worries into consideration before and certainly wasn't going to start now.
The broom he'd sent to her, a Comet 180, was supposedly a very good starter broom for a young flier, and it seemed like it was just as excited as she was to take to the skies. Her broom felt eager and excitable, like a cooped up colt ready to run free at any moment. She liked the little vibrations of greeting it emitted whenever she touched it, and was already hopelessly attached. She had decided to call it Casper, and had tied little blue ribbons around it's brush. With winter waylaying many of her favorite hobbies, Bex had begun to spend quite a bit more time in the library this past week researching proper broom care and maintenance, so that she could keep Casper in the best shape possible.
Partially she'd signed up for racing club just to get some practice time in with her new broom, but largely she was just really curious to see what racing was like after having watched Helena's match back at the beginning of the month. Also, winter was so boring, and she desperately needed something to do. Second also, Alyssea Brown had been very nice and accommodating in helping to arrange and moderate her duel with Raizel, so she was happy to sign up for any club that she was leading.
She blew on her hands to warm them before beginning her pre-flight broom check. Once completed, she huddled up with Juliana and their captain, Pearla, as they prepared for take-off. "Any words of encouragement, captain?" She asked Pearla.

<nimbus 1000> <sta 6 | eva 5 | str 6 | wis 7 | arc 6 | acc 5>Ophelia had never raced before. It was a fact, plain and simple, yet the thought still made her stomach churn. Broom racing. The thought and idea of it seemed so fun, didn't it? But then the actual day came and all she could think about was how she was going to fail. Not the most positive thing she could think, but at least she wasn't vomiting.
Still, even though this feeling of nervousness enveloped her with fear, Ophelia was happy that she'd joined the broom racing club. Since the race wasn't official, the pressure wasn't entirely taking hold of her and it was a great way to learn more about wizarding sports that she'd never heard of before coming to Hogwarts.
Taking a deep breath of the crisp winter air, Ophelia calmed herself. However she performed, it would be the best that she could do, and wasn't that the point of the club? To enjoy and have fun while racing? You can do it, Oph.
Ophelia looked around, her eyes locking with her fellow teammates'. She quickly made her way towards them. Her team consisted of two other Ravenclaw first years, Delainie Silverwing and Renelle Dalton. Both of them were new to her, but she'd warmed up to them quickly enough. Together, maybe they could win this race.<action> as team strategized@Delainie Silverwing | @Renelle Dalton

Desperately hugging her trembling torso with a free hand, Juliana cursed herself for not dressing properly for such frigid weather. As she wore a light jacket and lacked a warm hat or scarf, she stood with wide and a bit anxious eyes, gripping the borrowed school brom in her right hand. This morning, she didn't put any preparation or time into making a slick hairstyle. The act came out as crystal clear when anyone took a glance at her messy and uneven ponytail she struggled with accomplishing in such distress.

Beholding snow during the end of November would appear obvious, yet somehow, Juliana managed to forget about the environmental surprise that turned out to be white glittering snow, covering the beautiful and irreplaceable Scottish landscape. She was so invested in going through her team's strategy over and over again that nothing else occupied her clouded mind.
Stepping outside the Hogwarts castle after a long period of time, Juliana could finally take a deep breath of the desired and needed fresh air, soaking in the upcoming winter vibe. Hours of learning and studying very much unknown subjects came out as exhausting. Juliana hopelessly yarned for any kind of form of distraction. It wouldn't be much expected for her to join the Racers Academy, but here she was - sprinting to her very first race.
Despite the thorough preparation for this broom race, Juliana still wasn't able to imagine what would flying a broom look like without a presence of a flying class teacher. Without a presence of any teacher in that matter. Her only experience flying a broom had been attending a flying class since September.
Back in Newport, Juliana was a part of a soccer team and turned out to be quite skilled in it, but in Juliana's eyes, this activity appeared to be much more dangerous and required at least a tiny spark of talent. With a hope that playing such sport prepared her for a broom race, she hastily approached her two teammates, Rebecca and Pearla, who was also their team captain.
Preparing for her very first historical take-off, Juliana overheard "Any words of encouragement, captain?" coming from Rebecca. Clearing her throat, she lamely felt the need to say something as well and ended up pronouncing shyly "Let's hope we don't end up in a Hospital Wing." and right after that, she mentally slapped herself for such embarrassing encounter. Could she be any more awkward?

Pearla arrived with her hood up; She'd managed to sort of clip it into place using her hair. Sure, it might hurt if it was tugged on, but at high speeds, she did not want to get caught out in the sun if she was knocked off her broom. Followed by a mask and some goggles she'd gotten her hands on, being properly bundled up for multiple reasons. She'd Never raced, Never been captain, Never really been outside and for sports growing up beyond the rare run about when it was twilight and cloudy with other kids in her neighborhood. Perhaps Pearla was in over her head, but then what self-respecting Slytherin wouldn't jump at the chance to show their latent (totally applicable) abilities? She could strategize; she just looked at it like a giant physical game of chess with literal moving parts. She could do this.
She'd rest herself while slightly sitting back on the rickety school broom, Checking gloves and parts of her robe where it might flap open for a bit. She was more worried about the sun than the cold. Even if she were shivering, she'd just be more focused on giving herself a mental pep talk. She'd be sweating if it wasn't for it being freezing out; this had her nerves through the roof. Taking a red loli pop out of her pocket, she'd managed to pull the little stem out of and crunch on it while she tried to talk herself into this.
You got this; just.. fly like in class. Hold on, and stick to the plan. Don't even think about the sun; You're a natural, right? Just stick to-
She stopped and looked up when she heard the words of the others. "Any words of encouragement, captain?" and "Let's hope we don't end up in a Hospital Wing." She'd finish the candy and give a giant smile. . She was great at hiding her own anxiety about flying while speaking with the others, seeming entirely ready and upbeat for the sake of her team and slightly for the sake of herself. Perhaps part of this was so she could trick herself into believing her own words. Fake it till she made it couldn't be truer for the young snake.
"You won't end up in the hospital wing - We totally got this! Just stick to the plan! An' Keep'n eye out for anything coming your way. Your house is like bein' a bird, right? Means you were meant to fly, An meant to win this race!"
Shooting them both a firm thumbs up with her right hand. She then settled it right back on the broom and readied herself for the take-off call, the tiny bit of 'candy' and vocal pep-talk having helped solve some of her pre-racing nerves.
...If there is a will, there is a way...

Nimbus 1000I guessed this could be fun, broom racing, flying, a race, a competition. Now I had never raced before, nor watched it, but the name ‘broom racing’ excited me. It hadn’t occurred to me u til now how scary it could be though. The terrain looked daunting, and quite dangerous. I had a good brown though, so that should help save me, instead of one of those old rickety school brooms. I looked over at my teammates Renelle and Ophelia. I wondered if they knew what either were doing, or at least, any more than me.
It wasn’t like real broom racing or anything, just a club, so hopefully I would die today. I had seen quidditch before, and was on the team, a second string seeker but still. I had done flying classes for school and quidditch practices, so I think I’m good. I spent the next few minutes trying to ready myself with whatever I could, little self pep talks and stuff, saying that it would be super easy, anything. I was mostly ready to go now, having stared at the path ahead I think I knew what was coming, but we’d just have to wait and see.OOC Notes

ROUND 1
Maybe it was inexperience or nerves but no one dared to throw a spell. Alyssea didn't mind, though. It was cold and the faster this race was over, the faster they could get inside and warm up. She was, however, curious about one little bird that remained at the starting line. Maybe Alyssea wasn't loud enough? The rest managed to zoom ahead, so maybe it wasn't that.UNIT 0 - Starting Line

The school brooms really did nothing for the little birds (plus Pearla) as they came out disoriented from the fog. Miraculously, a few actually managed to come out unscathed. Of course, with how rickety and old the school brooms were, the half that was riding them were slower than the rest.UNIT 3

Rebecca, Delainie, and Ophelia charged ahead with their brooms. What did they have? Alyssea recognized Rebecca's Comet 180, having owned one herself for a bit. Delainie and Ophelia's brooms were not as recognizable.

Whether it was by pure luck or sheer determination these birds had, they made some distance, alright. The passageways were nobody's best friend which was a given considering how disoriented so many racers ended up after hitting the fog. Alyssea was amused, however, when Rebecca hit the easy passageway and hit the rocks but easily maneuvered through the hard passageway. Maybe it was learning from her mistakes that made the second passageway an easier ride. Delainie, on the other hand, came out as Alyssea expected: the first passageway would be easy while the second would be more of a challenge.UNIT 6
Delainie ends here
Alyssea looked down to the rest of the track. They were practically half-way now, so it surely wouldn't take much longer to finish.

x November 25th, 2023 Outdoor Club Area Mentioning @Alyssea Brown, @Renelle Dalton,
and @Delainie Silverwing
𝓣hey were all off like a shot the second that Alyssea called "Go!", the one notable exception being Renelle, who looked like she was staying put at the starting line. Was this part of their team's strategy, or was something wrong? Bex could only hope that Renelle was okay and unhurt, but she had faith that Alyssea would would intervene and stop the race if something serious had happened to her fellow Ravenclaw.
Right now, though, she had to stick to the plan and fly as fast and as hard as she could, a goal that Casper was thankfully very in tune with. It seemed eager to test out it's own limits, and seeing as this was a race, after all, Bex was more than happy to indulge it. God, she loved flying, and as much as she loved Quidditch, unless you were playing seeker there just weren't that many chances to let loose and fly as fast as you were physically able to. They probably should have slowed down at least a little once they hit the fog, but Bex was willing to risk it, and powered on despite how disoriented she ended up feeling. Full throttle baby, no regrets.
Well okay, maybe one regret, seeing as she managed to smack into the rocks in the easy passageways. She could taste blood pooling in her mouth from where she'd bit her tongue on impact, and spit it out onto the ground below. Thankfully Casper seemed undamaged, but also unrepentant, and it took all of her concentration to rein her broom in as they approached the next set of passageways. She came at them far more prepared - and, now humbled, far less cocky - and managed to maneuver through this set with much more grace.
Unfortunately she'd had to slow down a bit though to accomplish this, and coming out she saw Delainie flying ahead of her. Her side ached from her failure in the first passageway and her mouth tasted like pennies, but her broom was quavering with anticipation beneath her. Team Ride or Die, baby. She kept pushing onward.
@Pearla Vexx and @Juliana Allen, make sure to get your posts in, deadline's soon!

<nimbus 1000> <sta 6 | eva 5 | str 6 | wis 7 | arc 6 | acc 5>Taking a deep breath, Ophelia kicked off the ground as she heard the moderator, Alyssea, yell "GO!" She'd learned to fly, just like the other first years, but her racing experience was severely limited. Flying class was definitely not her favorite, and Ophelia could admit to not paying attention once in a while, which she truly regretted now. Still, the feeling of flying was exhilarating, even with the fears that came with it and Ophelia couldn't help pushing her broom faster.
Before she knew it, she was in the area which held the first obstacle. Fog. She'd never realized how hard an obstacle such as fog would be until she'd started flying. Almost completely disoriented as she got out of the fog, Ophelia urged her body to not rest, to keep going. There was still so much left of the track to go through, and her team would never win if she stopped to take brakes in the middle of the race.
Passing some members of the other team, Ophelia moved on to the next obstacle. The narrow passageways. These were much trickier than the fog, especially at the speed she was flying at, and Ophelia really wished she'd practiced her flying more before this race.<action> as team strategized@Delainie Silverwing | @Renelle Dalton | @Alyssea Brown

Hearing the starting words, the young snake took off as fast as her rundown broom would take her! She'd planned to hopefully keep up as best she was able, not really planning any dirty spells or offense at the beginning of the race. For now, speed was key As she rounded herself into the fog. Quickly Pearl found herself spun around. Unable to make sense of direction in the fog, She'd never considered just how disorientating it would be trying to fly through someplace where she couldn't see. Sure, other birds darted a head, and she'd sort of make it out of the fog after a moment had passed, but she had some serious ground to pick up if she wanted any hope of winning or even getting close. Though not all was bad, Her hood mask and other protective bits were staying on, The sun wasn't killing her, so in her book, all was going well enough. She'd kept herself from crashing, so it was a double plus!
Just keep going; you can make it to the finish at the very least!
Pearla coached herself, leaning into her broom and making herself smaller for the upcoming obstacles in hopes of avoiding any collisions. Her red Blue eyes were pinned to the little area coming up as she didn't wanna go slower through it, but nor did she feel like becoming a 'human' ping-pong ball off the walls.
