To read is to be, she would recite. To read is to live beyond yourself. And to read also bends the mind to discourse in odd ways. This would be the state young Astra Norrick was in at the time of dinner on November fifth, hardly touching her food in favor of the novel on her lap (such novel being The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien).

The girl idly fidgeted with her green and gray tie as she brought a salad laden fork to her lips. A conglomeration of flavors, umami from the petite bacon bits, crisp sweetness from the apples, fresh and verdant taste from the greens and cruciferous vegetables, and lastly the tart maple bourbon vinaigrette drizzled over all.

Piquant.

Astra munched quietly and wiped her hand before turning the page of her book, careful to keep is as far from harm as possible. It would be tragic to get that delectable vinaigrette mixed with the dialogue of Frodo and Sam, really.

A few paragraphs later, she repeated the process. "Surely I look like a turtle," she muttered, not meaning to say anything aloud. "Alas. 'Tis a small sacrifice to make in the grand scheme of things."

Another few paragraphs, another bite. If it were any other work captivating her attention, the girl likely could've set it aside for whatever time it took to consume the succulent salad on her plate. But Tolkien demanded her mind, and who was she to keep it from him?

Dinner at the Great Hall as usual. Ara had some pasta with white sauce. It was actually quite tasty but not as exclusive and delicious as the dishes from home, they were made by chefs. She held her fork on her right hand and a notebook on the other. It was Hogwarts not home so she could be impolite whenever she can and whenever she wanted. The notebook was filled with notes for an upcoming test that was in a few days. She needed to study to get a good grade.

Ara sat in the Slytherin's table of course. She sat at the section near the very middle. The chatter was of course very loud. She sat infront of a red-headed presumed first year. Ara didn't mind but the girl's mumbling was hard to ignore. The other girl was muttering things as she was reading 'The Fellowship of the Ring' a pretty good book that Ara read a few years back. It was enjoyable when she read it but now she had to focus of studying more than reading unfortunately.

The black and white haired girl read her notebook to make time pass by and took a bite of her food occasionally. Everyone else was busy with their friends but Ara would much rather study. Classic Ara.

Astra notes the presence of another bookworm, though this one was perhaps more studious than herself. A fellow snake and with an interesting choice of bicolor hair: black and white, like an old film. This snake, also, it appeared, to be the speed of a turtle when it came to her food.

Mayhaps we are merely hibernating snakes, Astra mused with a touch of amusement. Slow. Sluggish, if you prefer.

It was intriguing to the young one how vocal her inner monologue seemed to be recently, without any cause except that she was reading Tolkien. It's his doing, surely. A testament to the power of literature. It was the only reasonable, only right explanation. Her only other option was eccentricity, and Astra deemed herself much too young for that. Perhaps later. But not yet.

Her studious seatmate's black and white hair intrigued the young Slytherin, and she found her attention torn, two-toned, one eye on her time and the other on the follicles of the girl.

"Your hair... Quite aesthetic," Astra blurted shamelessly.

At this point I should likely note that Astra had stayed up far later than she was used to in favor of reading. Such action could be deemed foolhardy, as there were now even less annoying sensibilities between her brain and her mouth.

In short, the way was clear for each and every stupid, offensive, odd, and intrusive thought to come out of Astra's mouth.

"Is it bleach? Or dye? With such lustrous locks I'd scarce believe you to touch bleach, but hair can be a strange thing," she went on before taking another bite of salad.

The mumbling girl complimented Ara's hair. She didn't say anything back since she doesn't really know how to handle compliments from a strange, more or less from a random first year during dinner. Normally, she would just shrug it off. Her hair this year was her normal black hair with white highlights that resembled the colors of a chessboard. She got it done at a Muggle salon in London with the company of her sister. It took a boring 5 hours but it turned out nice and presentable.

The red-headed girl then asked if she uses bleach or dye. Ara noticed the wording of her sentence. She couldn't tell if she liked it or not for it was a bit too formal but it didn't really bother her. "Its bleach, I got it done in a salon in a muggle London. I heard it damages hair but after a few days it was just it's normal self. Quite strange I guess" She replied.

Ara's hair has always been straight and no matter what you do to it, it will always go back to it's proper self in no time. It's very thin too. She wanted to either dye it blue or cut it really short for her third year. Still contemplating between the 2 choices honestly. The other girl's hair was quite beautiful too. Thick, long, red, curled locks cascading down her shoulders. The second year hasn't seen the colour commonly but it suited her.

Ara flipped a page in her notebook and started writing a few more details in the descriptions inside with a pencil then ate her pasta. She didn't notice how little she had eaten since she was already pre-occupied.

It was strange, indeed, that the hair had not suffered damage in the bleaching process. Astra knew a few horror stories of girls ruining perfectly soft and fine hair with bleach, having to wait agonizing months to grow it out and get it chopped off once again.

"What luck, then," Astra concluded. She noted the girl was laser-focused on her notes and wondered at it. Surely second year could not be so terribly hard.

Then again, most students were more cautious in their studies than Astra, who let her proficiency in Charms carry her over her failures in, say, Herbology. Those dratted plants.

"What are you studying, if I may ask?" she inquired after another moment of silence. This was purely research, for what could it hurt scouting out the academic jungle of second year? Perhaps if it were Charms Astra could provide assistance. Though, it would be incredibly prideful to assume an intelligent girl such as the one before her obviously was needed any sort of assistance.

I wonder, is she learning a spell? Perhaps the Freezing Charm! Or... revelio! Astra quite liked both spells, though the former had proven more useful. Indeed, it seemed like just yesterday Astra had used that spell on the vicious squirrel, and again in the Great Lear Prank.

The girl said it was lucky that her hair wasn't damaged. Ara was quite thankful her hair didn't become a fragile mess when she had it bleached. Sure, it was a bit dryer than back then but at least it wasn't breaking off horribly. The thirteen year old bleached her hair out of boredom. She was with her sister that time, but instead of bleaching Catherine opted for a dye job rather than bleaching. Now her hair was rocking ash brown hair with pinks ends look. She noticed the other girl's hair now. Her light red locks were curly and quite long, falling midway down her back.

Ara ate a bit more of her food since the plate was still about 75% full. She regretted putting so much food on her plate.

The red-head asked the second year, "What are you studying, if I may ask?". The black and white haired girl was still holding a notebook and had a book on her lap. "Just advance reading, nothing much" she replied, flipping the page. Ara advanced reads quite a lot, when shes bored especially. Sometimes to the point where she didn't have to make notes for exams since she's already made notes of all the topics in advance.

She grabbed her glass of water and took a sip, while doing so, also spilled some on the book. 'SHIIII-' she thought in panic that her beautiful HOM book had water on it. She instantly got a paper towel and started pat drying the page, knowing all too well she didn't want it to get worse.
