october 5th - after the welcome feast
The chilled autumn air brushed by, lightly blowing Akari's loose baby hairs all over her face. She sat sideways down on a bench, leaning back slightly, crossing one leg over the other and flipping through the pages of her book to find the last page she was on. This lovely fall afternoon was also the day that the other magical schools arrived and so she was doing her absolute best to avoid everyone and everything and finding a nice quiet place outside was her best bet.

A couple weeks had already gone by since everything with Aaron, and Akari would be flat out lying if she said she was over it. She felt hurt and the feeling was not just going away. Perhaps subsiding but still lurking around whenever his stupidly cute face showed up. She just did not understand why after finally letting someone in her world after her dear Jess, all this happened. It was not fair.

For now, she did not really want to talk to anyone anymore. She had already kept to herself most of third year until HIM, so what was the problem with returning back to her old ways. Well, this time there was something different about her. It was not just a matter of being quieter and more introverted anymore. She just was now actively choosing not to engage with many people. It was better that way, right?

Why had this situation with Aaron affected her so much? She really could not answer that. Of course she had known all along what he was really about but it did not properly set in until she had seen him with that girl. She truly cared about him, even now which she hated herself for, and the feelings were obviously not mutual, so it stung to say the least. But whatever, she had her time to mope, now her goal was to forget about him completely and keep her mind off of anything related to him.

With that she let out a sigh. In all honesty she did not mind being alone in the slightest, it was rather calming and she liked that. Although now it would be much harder with all the other students hustling and bustling about, especially of the murmurs and whispers of the upcoming annual fall ball buzzing around constantly. It was frankly rather annoying. Initially she had thought there was no way in hell she was going to go, because she had not appeared at one of those events in quite some time and she intended to keep it that way, but ever since her silly little situationship had come to an end Akari had a lingering feeling that she had to go, solely to prove that she was no longer bothered by it. She hated the thought that people probably thought her lack of interest in anything but her own books was a reflection of the fact that she was heartbroken, and wanted to show otherwise.

But did she want to really go through all that effort? Hm, she did not know, and though the ball was around the corner, it was a problem for her tomorrow self. For now she desperately wanted to get back to the world of stories.

It was his third trip to Hogwarts, and Quentin had a strange feeling this time around. He couldn't quite place his finger on it. The feeling had pushed him out of the loud and cramped great hall, away from the feast, and into the cool night air. The feeling forced one foot in front of the other.

He would be lying if he claimed to be an expert in feelings. And this one was unfamiliar. He didn't exactly know where he was going. Quentin had enough trouble remembering the labyrinth paths in Beauxbatons, learning another castle didn't seem to be in his wheelhouse. Before he knew it, he was no longer walking on cobbled stone but soft dewy grass. He could see a shimmering lake and a grim forest in the distance.

It was quiet. He was alone. Oh. Flashes of his friends from Beauxbatons danced in front of his eyes. None of his friends came on these trips. At first, he thought that he'd make new friends. Exciting friends from new and foreign places. But he had so far been unsuccessful. He'd thought a half-Cajun, half-French, Parisian-by-sight, American-souled boy would fit more in with an international crowd. He had met all of his Beauxbatons friends before the throes of puberty and awkward teenagedom—now he wasn't sure what to say to strangers. Maybe this adventure wasn't for him.

He felt lonely.

Quentin moved to sit on the bench nearby, but before his butt could touch the seat, he realized a form was already sitting there. It took a second for his eyes to adjust. It wasn't just a form, it was whole person. A student. A teenaged girl. He let out a very delayed scream of shock, "Merde!" He wasn't so much afraid of the person herself but of the vulnerability she may have just witnessed.
