Ella had been at Hogwarts for just a little over a month, and she still couldn't get over the place. Despite the wizarding world not being new to her, Hogwarts certainly was, and she really liked it. But it didn't quite feel like home. Ella missed France. If she had stayed, she would've gone to Beauxbatons like Georges. She'd have come to Hogwarts for the ball just yesterday, like the other international students had.

Ella hoped she'd be able to meet some students from the other schools, especially Beauxbatons. She'd never been there, and she'd want to hear more about it. Ella wasn't really planning on going to the ball, though. She had thought about it, but social get-togethers of any sort had never really been her thing. Emphasis on the social part. The thought of interacting with so many people at once terrified Ella, but she figured she could at least watch the lanterns from her spot.

Ella pulled out her sketchbook and started to work on a regular portrait of a girl holding a lantern who may or may not have been her. It would be pretty cool to make a lantern and raise it up into the air like that muggle movie she'd heard about once-what was it called, Rapunzel?- and then watch as all the other lanterns rose up into the sky as well. Ella sighed and made a mental note to write to her family- she couldn't wait to see them for Christmas break.

After a swift welcome from the Hogwarts students, everyone dispersed to participate in the activities planned for the night. Aurélie was told about a lantern-making area and a banquet. But, being the formal-occasion-hater that she was, even the thought of a formal dining made her stomach turn. What sounded much, much more appealing was wandering around and exploring the school. Plenty of others seemed to have the same idea because they split off from the main group with her, going their own separate ways.

Or maybe they have someone to meet up with. The thought saddened her, reminding her that she knew no one here. No one except the few first years that she'd met at Beauxbatons before this event.

Aurélie drifted slowly away from the paths, ending up completely lost in the massive grounds of Hogwarts. She'd explored her own school countless times like this, but never had she felt so hopelessly alone. Oh, how she wanted someone to speak with.

And as if someone had answered her, she spotted a girl sketching underneath a tree. No one surrounded her and the spot she'd picked was serene. Her spot was strategic in its view, being able to watch the lantern-makers easily, but far enough away that no one would confuse her as one of them.

Even though it was against her better judgement and she knew that it was a terrible idea, Aurélie headed over to the girl, wanting to speak with her. Taking a deep breath and hoping that this girl wouldn't be too hostile, Aurélie struck a conversation with the girl.

"Salut! Je-" She quickly corrected herself, remembering that everyone here didn't know French like she did.

"I'm sorry. I'm Aurélie Duval, from Beauxbatons. I just saw your drawing, it's really good."

Ella had just finished putting the final touches on her drawing when she noticed someone nearby. Ella used her peripheral vision and saw a girl nearby. Ella took careful note of her appearance. She looked a bit like Ella, honestly, even though she did look a little different. When Ella saw the girl, she stopped drawing, though she didn't put down her sketchbook. "Salut! Je-" The girl began, and Ella's eyes widened.

The girl had just spoken French! It seemed that French was her first language since Ella had spoken French in an English-speaking environment many times. "I'm sorry. I'm Aurélie Duval, from Beauxbatons. I just saw your drawing, it's really good," said the girl, Aurélie. Ella smiled just a little. She had really been hoping for this! A chance to talk with someone from Beauxbatons! "Oh-!" Ella began, but then she stopped.

Not to say that Ella didn't really like speaking English, she just felt more comfortable talking with someone in French, although she was only prepared for making small talk. So Ella intentionally spoke in French for the first time in a month. "Euh, merci. Je suppose. Au fait, je m'appelle Ella-Margaux, mais je m'appelle Ella." Uh, thanks. I guess. I'm Ella-Margaux, by the way, but I go by Ella.

Ella still hadn't put down her sketchbook yet, but she wanted to wait, just to see how the girl, Aurélie, would react. She vaguely wondered how Aurélie had seen her drawing but didn't dwell on it too long. She sort of hoped that Aurélie wouldn't ask further about Ella's drawings, since she didn't really like talking about them.

Wait. Aurélie couldn't believe it. This girl spoke French? Just like her? For a moment, she thought that Ella, the girl in question, was a Beauxbatons student like her, maybe a first year as well, but one that she hadn't met yet. Then, she looked more closely at the girl.

She had a petite figure and pale skin. Her eyes were a deep blue and her hair dark brown and wavy. But the thing that stood out to Aurélie the most was her Hogwarts uniform. She definitely wasn't a Beauxbatons student, even though she had a French accent and knew the language well. She seemed comfortable speaking it too, as if it was her first language. Could she be a native speaker? One who'd moved from somewhere in France?

More than likely, Aurélie thought. I mean, she speaks French so perfectly.She smiled at Ella, not at all regretting her decision to spontaneously approach the girl, though she did feel bad about scaring her. How lucky she was to have found someone like Ella to bond with.

"Enchantée, Ella. Tu es d'où? Je suis de Paris, mais j'habite Marseille." Aurélie couldn't believe she was asking such stupid questions, but she ignored it, feeling a rush of happiness. Maybe she did have someone to meet.

Ella smiled and, sort of reluctantly, put down her sketchbook. She was trying to put it down more often when having a conversation with somebody. She wondered what the girl, Aurélie, thought of Hogwarts so far, and if she was going to the Lantern ball. Ella still didn't feel like going. She'd much rather talk with this girl than go to any sort of party, anyway.

Aurélie had asked her where she was from. "Je suis originaire de Normandie, mais j'ai déménagé en Ecosse à l'âge de 7 ans," I'm originally from Normandy, but I moved to Scotland when I was 7, Ella said. Then she added, "Je ne suis jamais allé à Marseille. C'est comment la bas?" I've never been to Marseille. What's it like there?" Ella got around a lot and really liked to travel, but there were some places that she'd always wanted to visit.

Ella fondly remembered living by the harbour in France, and when she went to Paris for the first time, too, at 5. She hadn't really liked it, there were way too many smokers. But Aurélie probably thought of it differently, since she was actually from Paris. But Ella had a lot more questions than just that, which was kind of uncharacteristic for her. Ella wasn't going to ask them all at once, though, because that wasn't how a conversation worked. Of course, that should be pretty obvious by now.

Well, that answered her question pretty well, didn't it? Ella was definitely a native speaker, if not a resident of France at the moment. Scotland. She'd never been there herself though she'd daydreamed of visiting such locations plenty of times. Her family wasn't one that travelled regularly unfortunately, and the most Aurélie had seen of the world was her city of origin, Paris, her current home, Marseille, and Beauxbatons. And Hogwarts, she added mentally, remembering that she wasn't in the beautiful school grounds of Beauxbatons, but at Hogwarts instead, which only succeeded in reminding her about where she was supposed to be. The ball. Oh, well, I'm having more fun here anyway.

It was interesting to know about different places and how they were, and based on Ella's question, it seemed that she felt the same. Aurélie smiled at the girl. "Marseille est belle. Il a beaucoup de couleurs et de culture vibrantes. Je me souviens très peu de Paris, mais je me souviens que je l'ai beaucoup aimé là-bas."

Aurélie thought back to her memories of Paris. Her parents had told her many stories about the city from a very young age, so many of her fuzzy memories were backed up only by mental images created through these stories. Still, even the descriptions of Paris that she'd heard from others made her feel excited.

But her heart would always be in Marseille, where she'd lived for the majority of her life. It was where her best friends lived and her family had stayed for years. Aurélie couldn't imagine what life was like anywhere but in her dear home.

"Je ne suis pas allé en Normandie ni en Écosse, mais j'adorerais les visiter. C'est comment là-bas?"

Marseille is beautiful. It has lots of vibrant colors and culture. I remember very little of Paris, but I remember that I loved it very much there.

I haven't been to Normandy or Scotland, but I would love to visit. Is it nice there?
