The changing of the seasons brought with it the tell-tale excitement for the Fall Ball and all its festivities. Sabine, while not planning on partaking in such festivities (not when she could spend her time with her beloved Abraxans and Granians, reading them bedtime stories in the gently pressing breeze), quite enjoyed watching the students buzz with excitement and anticipation of the event.

She traversed the grounds with a self-assuredness, wearing a stylish camel colored coat, a beret in cranberry red, and a matching red scarf, feet clad with high black boots. At her sides were two students: one third year, the freshly minted Care of Magical Creatures student Emma Wynn, and one a fifth year of Sabine's very own internship, Opeila Winters. Sabine held an affinity for both students. Emma's demure but sunny disposition, always happy to be there, with a zest for life that only a child could have; and Opeila's helpful hand that ensured Sabine's creatures would always been well cared for.

Sabine was there to accompany the two on the way to the classroom, as Opeila was tasked to assist in a few stable hallmarks and Emma had a litany of questions just waiting to be asked. She had elected to take them on the scenic route, just along the side of the Forbidden Forest, as the trees had begun to turn from evergreen to warm shades of yellow, orange, and red, a forest of fiery passion. "I should have you know, though, that the quickest way to gain a beast's trust is to approach with respect. I consider it the cardinal rule of maintenance," Sabine instructed, pausing when her foot landed on something unknown. It squelched around her toe, and a putrid smell curled up under her nose. Looking down, she saw a bulbous, fleshy plant that appeared like a pomegranate with too much pith. It seemed to be resilient, unscathed by her stepping on it. "Merlin's beard," she whispered, crouching beside the plant, brows furrowed and nose scrunched, "what on earth?"

Emma had been hesitant about having the option to choose classes, unsure of what she wanted to be in the future and not wanting to cut herself off from any options. At the same time there were only so many hours in the day, and so many slots in the timetable. She had panicked slightly and gone for one course she knew she would hopefully be able to ace quite easily, Muggle Studies. Her second choice of Care of Magical Creatures had been a somewhat easy choice only because she enjoyed animals in the muggle world and thought learning about the magical beasts and creatures would be another course where maybe she wouldn’t excel but she might find it easier than maybe Divination or Ancient Runes, at least based on what she knew about them. But she had to admit she was nervous about COMC, as these creatures were quite different than what she had thought. Sure she had read some book about magical creatures, but quickly found herself distracted by those that were typically found in mythical muggle books such as dragons or merpeople. So she had not been as prepared as she would have liked for her new class. Hence why she was out walking the grounds with Professor Blumenthal. She had questions, especially as she didn’t want to embarrass herself in class. She’d rather ask the questions now than look foolish in front of her classmates. At first she had been somewhat nervous about asking her questions in front of the older prefect, who was coming along, but her curiosity and desire to not embarrass herself in front of a whole class of her peers got her over that fear.

She was wearing her school clothes, her robes swishing around her ankles. She had started the walk by looking at her feet, or focusing on the Forbidden Forest that she had heard so much about, namely the spookiness of the whole thing. But now she was focused on Professor Blumenthal’s words, wanting to make note of everything she said. Frowning slightly at the her most recent words, Emma asked curiously “But what about if they’re rather frightening? How do you get past the fear or anxiety to show them respect? Or do you mean, just being respectful of the creature in general, and watching their body language to determine if they’re open to being approached?”

Emma breathed in, her words having gotten faster as she got towards the end of the sentence. Immediately, her nose curled, a rather disgusting smell wafting towards her nose. “I second that.” Emma replied to Professor Blumenthal’s exclamation, forgetting she was with a professor for a moment as she searched out the source of the scent.
Looking towards where the COMC professor kneeled, Emma spotted almost what looked like oozing blood. Her mind immediately began to panic. She squinted, trying to determine what could be bleeding, if it was a creature or something else, but she couldn’t find a head or feet or anything of any sort to show it was a living being. “Is that some sort of creature, Professor? It looks to be injured, though I don’t think I’ve seen blood that’s quite so……thick or jelly looking.” Emma was confused, and slightly panicked, hoping the professor or the other prefect would make sense of it.

About halfway through her fourth year Opeila had decided that she hadn't taken on enough responsibility at Hogwarts... next to prefect and hospital intern. So the offer to become an intern in the stables had been perfect and Opeila hadn't thought twice about signing up. While in her first week back at school she had been concerned that all the extra work would interfere with her studying for O.W.L.s, as she was a Duelling Co-Captain as well now, everything seemed to go alright for now.

So on one Monday, Opeila walked down to the stable, accompanied not only by Professor Blumenthal, but a younger prefect, Emma, as well. Opeila would not say much but let Emma and the Professor do most of the talking, especially as she had the impression that the younger girl was bursting with questions. This was Opeila's third year in care of magical creatures class- she knew the basics by now.

"I assume magical creatures won't be much different from non-magical ones in this way. Try not to show your fear and if a creature absolutely doesn't want to be approached, don't do it and get a professional. I guess it's similar to dogs-", Opeila would begin to voice her thoughts, when a weird noise and the Professor's voice interrupted her. Her first instinct had her extend an arm protectively towards Emma, not touching her, but a clear sign to stay back.

Opeila a bit of distance from the weird thing on the ground as well- she had never seen it before and Professor Blumenthal's reaction wasn't exactly positive either. "No, I think it's a... plant? But why does it smell like that?" Carefully Opeila took a step closer and drew her wand. "Diffindo"
She would point her wand at one of the red bulbs, leaning back a bit in case it would burst with pressure, but it was rather unspectacular. One of the caps cracked and red liquid would leak out. "... What is that?"
