Astra carried the bucket of water up the stairs. "All. My. Spells," she said as she tried to keep the bucket from sloshing as she shimmied up the stairs, "And I. Haven't. Thought. To learn. Wingardium freaking Leviosa."

Renelle was to meet her at the Headmaster's office. Honestly, Astra wasn't quite sure which of them would be to blame in this situation. It was the Slytherin who had suggested snooping around a teacher's office, but the Ravenclaw had sealed the deal by suggesting the two eleven year olds break into Solomon Lear's office. And from there, well, it was a snowball headed straight for detention, but Astra would be lying if she said it wasn't the best snowball she'd ever seen.

The pranks were simple: just a bucket over the door trick and a renegade spider (that was what Renelle was bringing).

Astra finally reached the top of the stairs. All those bloody stairs. There was one more spiral flight to go, past the gargoyle who accepted her grumbled attempt at the password (thank you, Roderick).

Her Ravenclaw partner in crime was already there with a jar in hand. Renelle tapped the glass and the black Webber inside jumped. Astra grinned. "Lovely little thing," she said. Renelle nodded with a mischievous look about her as well.

The two prepared to enter the great doors, the shorter one lifting her bucket with careful effort and the tall one twisting the lid of her jar the tiniest bit open.

They stepped into a clean and sparse office. No personal effects, no pictures, only an eerie sense that sent an unwelcome shiver down Astra's spine. She put the thought out of her mind, as she is prone to do with any reasonable thought while she's doing something stupid, and began to look around for something to stand on. "We're two halves of a whole idiot, you know that, right?" Astra said to Renelle as she began to drag over one of the heavy furniture pieces. The noise of wood scraping against stone immediately put her on edge, reminding her of the eerie feeling. "When you've let that spider out, give me a boost?"

Although she wanted to snoop around, she couldn't shake the feeling that she'd find something she wasn't ready for, or worse, even more questions.

This was, without a doubt, Renelle’s best worst idea to date.

Take note that she only said ‘Renelle’ and not her best friend/accomplice/later potential detention buddy Astra as well, because the more ominous part of this plan was entirely due to her. True, it had been Astra who’d brought up the bright idea of snooping around a professor’s office, but taking the level to the headmaster himself, well, she had herself to thank for that. The pranks were credited to both of them, though.

It was good that Astra hadn’t kept her habit of being late to everything this time, the Ravenclaw thought as her friend struggled through the doors, a bucket of water weighing her down, looking exhausted. Quickly, she stepped forward. The girl wasn’t a coward by any means (the fact that she was here at all should prove that), but this office felt rather sinister, for some reason. Too clean. To perfect. Like it was hiding something much more sinister underneath.

Looking at Astra, she frowned. “Why didn’t you use the Levitation charm? You’ve used, like, way harder spells.” But Renelle couldn’t complain, because for one, she wasn’t the one who had to drag the bucket all the way Astronomy Tower, and besides, they wouldn’t even be hear if it weren’t for Astra. Or more specifically, Roderick Norrick, otherwise the bane of her existence. He was always useful when it came to breaking rules though.

“And here’s our dear Webby.” Smirking, the first year held up the jar in her hand, showing Astra the lovely black eight-legged creature inside. She pressed her nose to the glass, cooing, “Ah, Webby. So beautiful. It took me two hours to find him outside; like, you’d think it’d be easier to find a giant arachnid here on school grounds.”

Very carefully, she stepped over to the weirdly bare desk, as Astra dragged furniture around in preparation of the second prank. Renelle pulled open one of the drawers, and carefully screwed the lid of her jar entirely open, slightly tipping it over so that the spider had space to crawl out. It did so, moving all its legs slowly, like some sort of slow-motion dance.

The moment it fully entered, Renelle slammed the draw shut, then immediately wincing at the loud sound it made. Yet she still couldn’t shake off the eerie feeling of being watched. Leaving as soon as possible seemed like a good idea.

Striding over to where Astra had set the heavy furniture under the doorway, she glanced around appraisingly. “Damn, creepy place, huh? Though good job with the furniture, looks like you didn’t need my help after all.” Stepping back, Renelle waited for her friend to get the bucket onto the door. Perhaps it would have made more sense for her to do it, being taller and all, but they both had missions, and this was Astra’s.

Also I’m not sure if we needed to tag the headmaster but it is his office, so just in case

Once again, Astra was posed with a question that had no good answer: why hadn't she learned Wingardium Leviosa? Renelle was right, the first year was already mastering second year spells, so a simple first year spell should've been easy. A breeze. Barely a thought.

But no. She had to be an idiot and learn the second year spells. Of course. It seemed as though her compatriot was not going to give the short redhead a boost, which was fine, she could manage, she'd done harder, but it was bloody difficult.

Sorry, Mum. Really, Roderick's cursing problem rubbing off on Astra was becoming more of an issue every moment. Got to work on that.

The door was already cracked open, and she braced it with her free hand as she heaved the bucket of water up and onto the door. After making sure it was in place, Astra hopped off the chair and dragged it to a totally different place in the office. "Just an extra surprise for our dear Headmaster Lear," she explained. It would probably just annoy him slightly, but Astra was never one to turn down the possibility of annoying someone through pranks.

Now the only issue was getting out. One detail the girls had overlooked was that the door opened inwards, so they couldn't move it at all when getting out. And while both were small due to their youth, and by no means overweight (in fact, Astra would be considered underweight and she was sure Renelle was on the edge of that), it would be a tricky business not bumping the door.

It was imperative that neither be caught in their own prank, as the bucket was half ice. Meaning they would likely catch cold in the chill autumn night and have to return to their dorms soaked. Rather suspicious.

"This may be a bit of a problem..." Astra muttered, going up to the door and examining the gap. She was fairly confident she could get through scot free, but Renelle was taller. "Perhaps I could use the freezing charm on the door so it doesn't move while you slip out? I think I'll be fine."

Renelle couldn’t help but smirk as Astra pulled the chair she had been using to reach the top of the door away, hiding it to a discreet corner of the huge office. Unless you knew exactly where it was, it was quite impossible to pick the piece of furniture out from everything else, although the place was very organised. Of course, the headmaster could probably use some high-level spell to find it in an instant, but being extra mean was always fun.

However, now that everything had been done, it seemed that they were faced with another, daunting challenge- leaving the office. In their haste and foolish, the two first years had completely failed to take into account that if they tried to push open the door even the slightest bit, the bucket placed on top would topple, drenching them with ice-cold water. A bit of an oversight on their part, but nothing could be done about it now.

As Astra started examining the front doors, trying to discover any solution tot heir current predicament, Renelle circled around the office, hoping to find something that would help them; a magic lamp that garnets wishes, maybe, or a time-travel machine.

Having found neither, the Ravenclaw started disappointedly back to the entrance, her heart sinking. “Seriously,” she sulked, “Who has an entire office without a window? That’s like, Office-building 101.”

But seemed like Astra had been more productive than her, for the Slytherin suddenly proposed that she freeze the door as Renelle squeezed through. Peering closer at the gap, she realized that she was, in fact, the one person in the duo who wouldn’t be able to get through without startling the bucket. Really, normally she liked being tall, though she had to admit, there were some downsides.

“Well, I suppose it’s the only way!” Clapping her red-headed friend on the back, Renelle grinned. “You know, I never expected that your obsession with Charms would be useful, but here we are. Do your magic, Red.” Then she quickly stepped back a few paces, just in case Astra’s spell went haywire and accidentally turned her into a squirrel. You never knew, after all.

Astra was thinking the exact same thing, but even if there was a window, the two would have to use the door. It's not like the dynamic duo of Renelle and Astra was the Hogwarts version of Batman and Robin with their fancy gadgets and all. Wouldn't we be a villain duo though? Not Joker and Quinn, but maybe like... another one? She shook her head slightly. Focus, Asa.

Astra turned her attention to the door as Renelle gave her an encouragement, or, well, the Renelle version of one. "If you call me Red I'm calling you Ren again," she said with a gleam in her eye. She was serious, but it was fun to mess with people, and if Renelle wasn't used to mixed signals by now they probably wouldn't be friends. Communication was definitely not Astra's strong suit.

Once again, she tried to focus on the door. "Immobulus," she enchanted softly, focusing with all her might on the door.

After a few moments, the Slytherin waved the Ravenclaw forward. Renelle began to inch through the small opening.

At first, all was going well. Then Astra lost focus and Renelle bumped the door. The bucket tilted, and Astra quickly cast the Freezing Charm on it. "Close the door the tiniest bit, Renelle," she said through clenched teeth, her blue eyes glued to the bucket. She just needed the door a few centimeters closed, so that the bucket would be completely stable.

Renelle glared at the redhead. “If you call me Ren, I’m setting a squirrel loose in your dormitory. As to how I’d get there… ” she smirked. “Let’s just say, I have my ways.” Could a student from another house even get into a different common room, even with the password? Well, if Astra continued with the nickname, she was going to find out.

As she watched, her friend casted the freezing spell on the door, giving her to signal to start moving. At first, all seemed well- Renelle was careful, and Astra’s spell held. Alas, she should’ve known that fate wouldn’t let the two girls off that easily. Just as it appeared that the Ravenclaw was going to emerge victorious, she. Bumped. The. Door.

Immediately, Astra- lifesaver, that girl was- shot her wand out once more, stabilising the bucket. Cautiously, Renelle did as she asked, though it was rather awkward, for her position in the wedge between the doorway. As she closed the door, she slipped out as well, though keeping sure that there was just enough space for Astra to get out as well.

Out there in the hallway, Renelle finally let out a deep sigh of relief she hadn’t realised she was holding. “Phew,” she sighed, dramatically brushing away imaginary beads of sweat from her forehead. “You know, for a moment there, I wasn’t sure if we were gonna make it. Like,” she looked at Astra. “I half-expected Lear to suddenly materialise out of thin air and turn us into cockroaches. Or spiders.” Wouldn’t that have been ironic?

Though now that the adventure was over, Renelle wasn’t entirely sure what to do. They hadn’t given much thought to the aftermath of their little trip, and for one, she kind of wanted to see the headmaster stumble upon the delightful surprises the Terrible Two had gifted him, which was the best part of pranks, after all. It wasn’t like they could very well hide in his office until he appeared….

Or could they?

Renelle turned to Astra with wide eyes. “Okay,” her voice was low and rushed. “I just had the most amazing idea ever. ” She paused. “Or possibly the most stupid, I guess it depends, but hear me out. What if… We hid in Lear’s office until he comes back, so we can see his reaction to the lovely things we did for him? Dense, or brilliant?”

"So we've got an understanding then," Astra said before she actually cast. It was weird, the two were best friends but never really had any nicknames, except when they were young and words were far more difficult than they were at this time. Not that either really minded.

Thank Merlin that they had been doing this kind of stuff together for so long. Otherwise this entire thing may have backfired royally and Renelle might've gotten iced and soaked. Urgency in the tone was something both girls could probably convey very well, since they used it so much. Can't get caught, you know.

Astra was easily able to slip out through the opening provided, her thin frame barely an issue and her mop of hair tied back. Out in the hallway with her partner in crime, Astra let out a sigh of relief, laughing at Renelle's words. "Yeah. Nerve-wracking."

As for the idea, Astra was immediately down. The two crouched behind different pillars or juts in the wall, and waited. And waited. And waited some more.

"It's like two a.m., Renelle," Astra finally whispered with a yawn. "He's not coming. And I want to sleep."

Something about never sleeping from the Ravenclaw, but she stood from her spot. The girls walked, parting ways at the Ravenclaw tower. Astra gave a wave and a smile. "See you in the morning."

I wonder what Lear will think when he gets a cold shower tomorrow morning, she thought as she slunk down the stairs (so... many...) and kept low and quiet to avoid detection, going as quickly as she could. Luckily, the portraits were mostly asleep. Even the cat from her sleepwalking episode was dozing.

That was fun, she concluded with a smile as she slipped into the dorms, then her room, and then under her blankets. I wonder what it would be like without her.
