It wasn't like Astra was actually trying to flipendo something, or someone. She wasn't even trying the spell, which was very unlike her.

Heck, she hadn't even mastered the spell she was supposed to be working on. There was no reason for this little diversion in her learning except that she was bored out of her mind and this looked fun.

So here she was, sitting in the abandoned classroom, where she had only been once before, eyes staring unfocused into the distance. I could be doing homework, she thought lazily, twisting her hair around her finger. But I'm not. That's a stupid idea. I'm going to get behind. Strangely, she found that the potential of getting behind didn't bother her nearly as much as it used to.

Still, she could hear her parents' voices in her head, especially Mum's, telling her to stop dallying and get some work done. After all, what was the point of school if not to learn? So Astra grabbed the textbook she had with her and flipped open to a random page.

The Knockback Jinx
Incantation: Flipendo

Astra perked up a bit, intrigued by this spell. How useful! It sends things flying away from you, she mused. Annoying people, beware.

It shouldn't have been complicated. Maybe the textbook was poorly written, or maybe Astra was just dumb, but no matter how many times she read the instructions, she couldn't seem to replicate the proper wand motion or figure out why the lesson kept using the word "doxies." For thirty minutes she read and re-read, tried to move her wand the right way, and tried to figure out what in the wizarding world doxies were, but the book didn't mention it anywhere else. She sat with her head in her hands, her hair disheveled and pulled in odd angles, and her mind completely blank.

What am I doing wrong? It all comes so easy in Charms class. Why can't I understand these things ahead of schedule in DADA too?
OOC for staff/prefects: Astra will not be learning Flipendo through this thread since she doesn't have that ability, she simply wants to know why she can't seem to understand the lesson.

Maverick was definitely not in his best mood. So far today, he felt that everyone was against him and not giving him things he wanted. Thus, he preferred to just avoid them altogether: better to be alone than to be with those who drove him to anger (six words which translated to "all human beings" in Maverick's current definition).

He had made up his mind about it, and so did not want to spend a long time in the Great Hall for lunch. He grabbed some smoked salmon sandwiches, stored them in his lunchbox, and walked away. He did not want to eat in his dorm or in the Gryffindor common room, and walked fast somewhere else, though without destination: to the first floor, then the second, not toward outdoor.

At the end, his footsteps brought him to an unused classroom. This cheered him up a little, for he thought he could have his meal here without any disruption. Oh, how disappointed the boy was when he found out the room was not empty! Inside was a curly-haired student, a textbook in her hand. Maverick recognised it as the very same Defence Against the Dark Arts textbook he had used the previous academic year; but despite the aforementioned subject being his favourite, he had no interest to linger on today. Instead, he was preparing to take a leave.

Astra looked up from her book in surprise as a boy, brown hair, green eyes, Gryffindor robes. He was carrying a box in his hand and honestly looked pissed. The smell of cooked fish, the kind where you know it's seasoned well and it's not dry and it may possibly be the best tasting thing on the planet, reached her nose and her stomach growled violently. It reminded her of the Pit Bull next door, the one that she used to throw bits of turkey to before her parents caught on and made her stop. Not my fault I hate turkey.

She realized the boy must have heard as her stomach once again made it's presence known with a roaring grumble. "Lunch already? she muttered in confusion, pushing a stray bit of hair out of her face. "Ah, can't be, it's only-" When Astra's eyes fell on the clock, she groaned aloud. It had been two hours since she stepped foot in this classroom and she had literally got one thing done. One.

Poking around her workspace, she looked for her quill and parchment and books. She felt frustration rise up again as she looked at the Defense Against the Dark Arts book. She slammed it closed, muttering "Flipping Flipendo" before placing it with her other books.

Ugh, my stupid hair- She reached back to put it up but realized she didn't have a hair tie. Used to Renelle or at least another female being around, she asked "Could I borrow a hair tie?" without thinking, turning towards-

Oh Merlin. The boy. She covered her mouth with her hands, causing her stupid thick frizzed up (did she already say stupid?) to fall in her face again. "Nev-nevermind that, hah," she said quickly, shoving the hair out of her face and swiftly returning to her packing up. She didn't recognize the boy, and he didn't quite look to be her age. Way to go, you've made a fool of yourself in front of an older year.

Wait. She glanced over at the boy and, her ever-present and ever-meddling curiosity eating away at her, asked, "I'm sorry, but do you by chance know what a doxy is? I've been trying to figure that out for a while now, but I guess I don't have the right book with me."

The thought of the stubborn Knockback Jinx crossed her mind. "And do you perhaps know how to cast Flipendo? I'm not really trying to cast it, just can't seem to get the wand motion right. Feels off, you know?"

Unfortunately for him, just when he was about to take a figurative flight, he was called. He could ignore the stranger if he thought about it, but he was not really used to do something like that. But perhaps even worse than the fact that this student had called him, was the (his) deduction that she must have been stupid or insane or both.

He meant, what were the chances that she was not? First, she asked if he would be so kind so as to lend her a hair tie. He was so ready to roll his eyes and asked if he looked like a person with long hair, but she quickly told him to forget her words, denying him a chance to speak up his mind. Next, she enquired if he knew what a Doxy was, before finally rambling a request to show her how to cast Flipendo, the knockback jinx.

In other situation, he would have wrinkled his nose at her and walked away, but the last request meant something else: a chance to show off his ability.

"I do know how to cast Flipendo," he said in a tone he believed she would perceive as cool and confident. "I'll show you. It's very easy. But first (he inserted a dramatic tone here)... lunch. Easier to cast a spell when one isn't hungry. And you'd better have some yourself, the break's only an hour, you know that, right?"

And he added inwardly, So I can be free of you for a couple of minutes.

Lunch.

Crap.

She had forgotten to eat. Again. And honestly she was up to her eyeballs in work she was supposed to be doing so that didn't exactly encourage her to go and eat said lunch. "Oh... Yeah..." she mumbled, returning to her open books. "Not really hungry." Plus there was far too much hustle and bustle in the Great Hall, and Astra figured overstimulation would not be good for her right this moment.

So she sat back down where she had been, flipping over to what she was supposed to be reading about, Imps. Ugly little buggers.

Astra nearly forgot about the brown haired boy in the room, the one she had made herself a fool in front of, until she glanced up and saw him doing whatever the heck he was doing at the moment. Probably thinking she was insane or something to that effect.

Good grief, Asa, would it be so hard to have a normal first interaction for once? Luckily, the gift of poker face had been bestowed upon her and none of her racing thoughts passed into her face.

Astra remained silent for fear of making this interaction any weirder than it was already, though she did not leave. Why should she? She was here first, after all. Plus all her books and papers were here, and she was likely to lose at least one piece if she moved to a different room.

"Go," Maverick growled and hissed at the seemingly-younger pupil. "Get your lunch. Or if you don't want, go sit there in the corner and don't make any noise. I need my lunch and my quiet time, and I will not be disturbed or I won't show you how to cast Flipendo. I'll do it whenever I'm ready, so don't even think of calling me, 'Have you finished your lunch? Can you show me to cast it now?'"

Without adding a You understand?, Maverick sat on a desk and took out his lunch. He figured his threat ought to do well. And even if it did not, he was serious with his words. The moment she broke the (one-sided) deal, he would simply ignore her and leave once he finished eating; no, he would not even bother reminding her of the deal and giving her one more chance.

The second year focused on his meal. The smoked salmon sandwiches turned out rather good, and for this reason his mood was lifted up quite a bit. He was hungry, too, and he ate rather faster, finishing one sandwich after another. Washing them with nice, plain water, the part-Veela let out a voice of content and sat calmly, letting his stomach digest everything and converted it to energy.

It must have been fifteen minutes or so before he spoke back at the other person in the room.
