All Aboard!
Date: September 1, 2023 | Dialogue: X
Twinkling stars covered the night sky as wispy clouds danced across the moon. It was a calm night, the cool air seeming to carry a sense of excitement, of anticipation. This was to be expected, the new school year was beginning in a matter of hours. Finley Greer, standing alone, watched as the Hogwarts Express drew closer and closer. Billows of steam trailed behind the engine, students already craning their necks out the window hoping to get a glimpse of what awaited them.

They wouldn’t see the castle, not yet. They had to get through a bit of their boat ride before they would be able to lay their eyes on their new home.

The train came to a screeching halt, and students seemed to explode out of the doors of the train, itching to get off. Most students peeled off and started towards the path to Hogwarts Castle, but a group of the youngest students looked quite lost and confused, and some even looked afraid. Perhaps they should be, as things were awaiting them that even Finley was unaware of.

The caretaker cupped her hands around her mouth, shouting as best she could. “First years, over here! Leave everything behind! Miss Hawkins, you are not a first-year! You take the carriages.” She waited a few moments as the incoming year of students began to congregate around her. She waited a minute or two before repeating herself, wanting to make sure that no one was left feeling confused or left behind.

“Right then, is this everyone? Miss Hawkins, I know that’s just you with a moustache. Go.” She sighed, some of these upperclassmen were beginning to test her patience. “Alright, I’m Miss Finley Greer, the caretaker of Hogwarts Castle. Don’t break everything you touch and it’ll be easy to stay on my good side.” She winked, mostly joking. Mostly. She clapped her hands together, drawing people’s attention once more. “Tonight, you’re getting a special view of where you’ll be spending your next seven years, as we’ll be traveling to the castle by boat. After that, you’ll all be taken to the Great Hall for your sorting ceremony, where you’ll be sorted into one of four houses. I’m sure you all chatted about that on the way here. These two things only happen once during your time at Hogwarts, there are no do-overs. No pressure.”

Finley stepped aside, revealing the wooden boats that would whisk the students to their new home. “Go ahead and pick a boat, sit with whoever you’d like. Just no more than FOUR to a boat. Got that? Four. Alright, off you go!” Fin stepped aside, giving space for the youngsters to mingle and find their boats. She’d offer help to anyone who needed a hand getting into their boat before doing a final head count.

OOC note to all incoming first years:
Welcome to your first-year entrance!

- This is an "open thread", so feel free to join whenever, even if the boats are already on the move (in which case, act like you've been there the whole time). I'll keep the list of boats above up to date so that you know which boats are open for you to join. Please note somewhere what boat you are joining!

- I will be posting in this thread every 2 weeks to do a "mod post", helping facilitate your character's journey! Please do not write beyond what I have described in the mod posts (seeing the castle, the boats moving, etc)

- A helpful tip for a big group thread like this is to tag the people you're interacting with (the people in your boat) so that you don't have to read everyone's posts, only the people you're talking to. To tag someone, put their name between two mention brackets, like so:

Code: Select all

Full Name
- All RPG rules apply. You do not need to be “indexed” to participate in this thread, all are welcome! Word count minimum per post is 200 words of your own work, not including quotes, ooc chat or other people's words. Any "flood" messages (posts under 200 words) will be deleted after a warning owl is sent.

- If you are having a hard time meeting the 200 word count expectation try to be descriptive: How was the trip here? How are you feeling? What boat are you joining and why? If you have any questions about this thread, please don't hesitate to send me an owl!

Lucy was excited. In just a few minutes, she would see Hogwarts for the first time! Sure, she read about it. And her mom told her everything about the big castle. But still, seeing it with her own eyes was something special. She looked around and saw children with similar expressions. They couldn't wait to get in the boats to really start their journey to Hogwarts!

Lucy listened to the caretaker while looking at the Great Lake. She was wondering if the story about a giant squid in the lake was real. Maybe she could ask the caretaker, Finley Greer? She made her way towards her and was about to ask her when everyone suddenly started to get in the boats. Guess I'll have to ask later, she thought to herself and went to one of the boats.
There was already a girl sitting in there, so Lucy asked "Can I sit here?". As she waited for the girl's response, she watched the lake closely. Maybe she could find the squid, if it even exists. But the water was even and showed no sign of a big monster. Lucy thought about the size of the lake and if a giant squid could even fit in there. But then again, she read about how a massive ship once came out of the lake. So everything could be possible.

@Lucy Summer ------------------------------------------------------------Replying as Kit Isabelle Blaine.
Kit could not contain her excitement -... to leave the Hogwarts Express. Janette and Monica were fine enough young ladies, but her (non-existent) claustrophobia was certainly hitting hard. Alright, she'll admit it, 'cause so what if she was excited to be at a freaking school of magic? Her pa had talked so much about Hogwarts that every time, Kit just wanted him to shut up. But now, she seemed to kind of understand why it was such a, well, magical, place. A bemused smile lit up Kit's face as a older student had somehow mingled into their group of first years. 'And what might you be doing here? Kit mused, but the older student either didn't hear or didn't want to.

Cautiously, she dropped her luggage and followed the crowd of people streaming towards the caretaker - whose name Kit must have learnt, sometime but then forgotten. Once again, she caught the older student by the name of Miss. Hawkins mingling among them, this time with a moustache so asinine Kit had to hold back a giggle. How old did she think she was, to be acting so childish, yet with such confidence? Kit didn't want to know. Amidst the crowd, Kit tried her best to figure out where to sit. She was - believe it or not - one of the students nearest to the boats. When in doubt, get away from the adults. The caretaker seemed to have taken the first boat, so naturally, Kit went for the fifth.

Reluctantly, she settled herself down. She had wanted to get a nice, good look at the Great Lake. Was the squid there? Was it? Was it? Kit would love to meet it. Befriend it? Flirt with it? And pronouns?- he, she, they, it, something else? She was utterly confused, but in a lovely spiral of imagination. Oh, how nice it was to just let her mind wander again. No matter what kind of predicament people are in these days, everyone still feels the pressure of real life. To be honest, Kit felt as if she was getting to philosophical and serious. Just calm down and breathe, she thought to herself.

Suddenly, the future Slytherin was approached by a girl, with wavy brown hair and blue eyes. There was something about blue eyes that was captivating. She wanted to sit with Kit on the boat, which, considering Kit's absolute skill, made well enough sense. 'Ask me when you're cooler,' Kit joked with a playful smirked. She stared at the girl for a while, and if she seemed to not get it, the Scottish witch would add on, 'Come on, aren't you cool enough already? Get on the boat if you want to.' She was excited, but that didn't mean she should joke around as usual.

"Oh, thank you", Lucy mumbled after the girl had told her that she could join her boat. Lucy got inside and sat opposite her. The girl had short brown hair and looked a little mischievous. Lucy wondered what house the girl could be sorted in. She seemed like a Slytherin. After watching her for one or two minutes, Lucy turned her attention to the lake again. But still no Giant Squid in sight. She wondered if the other girl knew about the squid - myth. Maybe she should just ask.
"Soo... have you heard that there is supposed to be a giant squid in here? My mom told me about it, but I don't really believe it. What about you? Do you also think about the squid? Are you from a magic family? And what's your name? I'm Lucinda Andrea Summer, but please call me Lucy", she said quickly. This surprised her, because normally, she was really shy and quit. But Lucy kind of just felt at ease around this girl. Maybe they could become friends? Lucy really hoped, because she only had two friends at the moment, a muggle and a witch from another country. Thinking about it like that made her giggle a little as she waited for the girl to answer.

Ashley Young stood at the edge of the dock and gulped. She loved swimming and boats, but she didn't know what to expect from the magic world. Does it fly? Does it go beneath the waves??
She nervously looked around and hopped into the first boat with @Finley Greer and shyly nodded to her.Ashley became even more nervous, am I the only muggle born here? She wondered and shrank down in her robes. People might think of her as strange, she thought as she rubbed at the paint she had already gotten on one of her shoes.
Ashley then looked around at the lake and tried to make a mental note for later so she could....oh wait! Ashley quickly pulled her sketch book out and started to sketch the lake and boats around her along with the large castle looming in the distance. As she was sketching, she wondered if she'd ever be good enough to create moving portraits like the rumors she heard about Hogwarts.
Ashley giggled to herself imagining the look of surprise from her parents as her portraits moved within the paintings, coming to life before their very eyes! Then she remembered that they were muggles, and she would probably not be allowed to show them. She shook her head and quickly wiped a tear from her eye.

Her first time going into a magic castle..... She was dreading this moment. An 11 year old girl? All alone? Heading to a strange rock brick castle? Cause a letter told her to?

She suppose she is being paranoid, she could've backed out anytime during Diagon Alley, but she didn't. It excited her very much that there's a whole new world out there, but now that she's here she realised she has under planned. For one, there is still too many things she don't know about magic, and two, how many students there are. She is dorming, with magical kids, that knows more about magic than she does.

She does not like making a fool out of herself... and that is also why she chose to slide into Boat 2. People intimidate her, she feels like if she joins one of the boats that have people in them already they would stare at her like she just offended them. It's better to sit on a boat and if people want to join then at least they knew what they were getting into before they sat down...

She sat there with her legs tightly squeezed together, looking around, unsure where to leave her eyes resting on, it can't be a person, cause that'll just make it awkward, but if she keep staring at a bush, the boat, or the river, they might think she's insane. She really can't win here.

Boston literally couldnt believe what was happening. Actually, she could. shes had plenty of dreams like this, as someone who lived in a crowded tight city in America, she would always think aboht bigger open spaces. like a CASTLE for one. and not to mention, this castle involved magic. actual magic. and not the magic you saw on disney channel, but literally form changing magic. Her chemistry teacher could NEVER. Boston was always impressed when they did labs, but she was the most excited for herbology. Boston had a green thumb, and she was excited to show off her knowledge. as she was thinking about it, she realized that the plants here would surely be nothing like what she was used to. suddenly she began to realize this might not be as easy as she thought.

Boston had braided her hair into 2 french braids on the train to contain her excitement,
and now she fiddled with the thin silk ribbons she used to tie the bottom of her braids. Her robes were dark, and in her opinion, depressing. "these robes look like they were designed by a man." she said to some random person next to her, and was answered with a side eye. boston held her hands back in a mini surrender pose. "ok, geez. show a little enthusiasm will you?
She walked away and climbed onto a boat. she looked around and sat happily.

Astra couldn't believe her eyes as she stared across the Great Lake, dark and deep and utterly enchanting, at the huge gothic castle that was to be her second home for the next seven years. Her life had been building up to this moment practically since she was born, especially since her first instance of magic.

She was jostled in a crowd of unfamiliar people, separated from the girls she had sat with on the train. Pity, I wish I wouldn't have to embarrass myself in front of someone new, she thought sarcastically, pushing someone in front of her as they stumbled, treading over her toes.

She saw that most, if not all, of the boats were empty. The first boat held a young girl with paint on her person in various places. She was sketching something in her book. Astra glanced around at the other boats. She didn't really want to sit in an empty boat and leave her travelling mates up to chance, nor the one with three girls in it. There was a girl who looked like a rather pretentious hipster (in Astra's opinion, despite her French braids) sitting happily in a boat by herself, and Astra decided she would rather not sit by her. OOC: in author's opinion, Boston sounds cool but Astra thinks she looks too energetic

Astra noticed there seemed to be a seat saved in the first boat with the artsy girl, hopefully for Mr. Greer. She didn't feel like meeting many new people and she got a good feeling from the artsy girl.

Astra, not very used to boats of any kind, cleared her throat as she came up to the girl. "Terribly sorry to inconvenience, but it might get a little shaky. Just a heads up," she said, before climbing into the boat as carefully as she could. The shaking didn't end up being too bad, in Astra's opinion, but she apologized again nonetheless.

Ashley looked up as a new girl joined her in the boat apologizing as she climbed in.
Unbothered by the moving boat, Ashley shyly smiled at the girl. "Hi..."
she said, looking down at her sketchbook debating if she should try to get enough courage to start a conversation or to continue sketching. After a few minutes, she decided to put her sketchbook down and see if maybe she could get to know this girl, who knows what could happen.
"I'm Ashley, Ashley Smith, what's your name?" She asked, hoping she doesn't look or sound as awkward as she felt. Ashley felt like she was going to have a hard time making friends if she didn't start interacting with people around her.
She noticed one of her braids was coming undone, so she started rebraiding it, hoping to keep a neatish look for the sorting ceremony. "Do you know anything about the sorting?" She asked, "what house do you want? Or want to be in...I mean..." After she asked the question, she stopped and blushed, realizing she's asking a bunch of questions and this girl probably didn't want to talk that much, or isn't interested in interacting at all, and Ashley didn't blame her.

Astra returned the girl's smile. "Hullo, Ashley," she said. "I'm Astra Norrick." Ashley seemed rather shy to her, which Astra supposed that could be said about many people, herself included about 75% of the time.

She noticed that Ashley set her sketchbook aside. She began rebraiding her hair. Astra looked on in awe, she had never quite figured out how to do a good braid despite her hair growing so quickly and being so long. And Ashley's braids looked very nice. "Your hair looks amazing," she said. It was a genuine compliment, something that Astra hadn't given to anyone outside of her family for a few years now. It wasn't that she was trying to be mean, it's just nobody around her was compliment-worthy.

Ashley's questions about the Sorting and houses led Astra to believe this girl hadn't grown up around magic. The blonde girl blushed as she asked these questions, but Astra simply smiled. "Well, from what my family's said, there's a hat that looks through your personality and mind," she says, "to figure out what you value. And based on that, you go into one of the four houses. Slytherin, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff. Personally, I think I'll get Ravenclaw, the wise house. I've had several Ravenclaw family members. But I would be fine with any house.

"How about you?" Astra asked. She felt stupid asking immediately, though, because what if Ashley didn't know the House traits and values? What if Astra was simply setting her up for embarrassment? Astra thought this girl was very sweet and didn't want to do that to her, but the words were already out.
