Closed Camp 2023 Summer Duels, Game 2: Slytherin vs Guests

Hadashi could not help but roll his eyes. Did this intolerable little bastard have any friends at all? Hadashi found the odds of it extremely slim. What was he even doing, with that nonsensical hand movement to his neckline? And he couldn't even pronounce Mahoutokoro correctly. How in the world did he become a dueling captain? Hadashi refused to believe that Hogwarts' standards were that low.
He would even rather go and with Narumi and Shamsi than stay with this little asshole.

Hilariously though, despite all that pompous big talk, his spell spread missed completely. This boy, he surmised, was a classic case of all bark, no bite. Hadashi's spell worked beautifully, and already claimed a target!

Hadashi was about to reply that he was speaking of Grindlewald and Voldemort, not fingering Dmitri as a terrorist specifically, but his theory about this half-witted Slytherin was proven when one of his teammates had to pick up his slack with a petrification spell that managed to hit him and Amaury.
Well... Whatever. This was hardly the first time he'd been hit with that spell, he doubted it would be the last. Nothing to do but wait until it wore off.

Doing As Strategized

Of the six spells that had flown from the Viper’s territory, both of Astrea’s had scarcely slid past their targets, the slim margin for error aiming to make a fool out of her between the veritable slew of cast spells. So their foreign opponents had lighter feet than expected, but even clever feats of evasion could not outmatch superior aim and focus. Only a combination of strategical skill and carefully construed luck could aid them now on the path towards utter domination.

The forming crackle of thunder — by now a frequent feature of duels beyond the international boundary — struck true in a feat of early victimisation. Yet even while lightning-marked, the injured Ruby had faced the greatest luck in squarely petrifying two of their targets. Within seconds, the odds had been unevenly stacked against their international guests. Impressive work. Astrea, though lacking in her former captain's clever remarks and historically unwilling to break attention with even incapacitated threats, held only simmering approval at the prompt silencing of their irritable opponent.

Sending a short nod of positive acknowledgement towards her duel partner, she trusted in their capability — whether it appeared as the potential power of upperclassmen duels or competence of far more mundane guarantees.

In a whirlwind of spells, the first round of casting marked itself decisively as Ruby’s least favorite round of any duel she had participated in. The stupid Mahoutokoro kid—who had no retorts this time as he ignored her response to him—had cast the Weather-Modifying Charm, something that, at first, Ruby hadn’t been too concerned about. It had been present in her own duels and duels she had watched, but it rarely caused a lightning strike. It seemed fate was not on her side in this moment, though, as, sure enough, she was instantly struck by a bolt of lightning, and then Amaury hit her with the Pressurized Water Charm almost at the same moment.

“Ow, shit,” she hissed, barely audibly. Her head spun, the pain getting to her. The water dripping off her clothes only made her more uncomfortable and frustrated, which was furthered by the sight of Dmitri and Astrea missing their spells. She wasn’t necessarily annoyed at her teammates for their lack of success—rather, she felt bitter that the other team did so much better than the Slytherins this round. Perhaps she had underestimated the foreigners. Thus far, they were more difficult opponents than any Hogwarts team she had faced, and there was a flash of brief panic that then got replaced with steely determination.

Fueled by irritation and the strong desire to win, she spread a Full Body-Bind Curse that hit both of the boys whose spells had hurt her. She breathed a soft sigh of relief—while she couldn’t relax and underestimate the remaining boy, she much preferred these odds and it was nice to have succeeded at her spell. Astrea’s nod and Dmitri’s approving look soothed her slightly, and she chuckled at Dmitri’s comment. “Certainly won’t miss the sound of his voice,” she agreed, and readied herself for the next round despite the ongoing pain.

The Slytherin players, despite Meenauh expecting full offence, decided to impose even more control. Astrea put Maksim inside the thick fog, obscuring his vision a little. Dmitri conjured the Limbo Mist, Maksim wouldn't feel well in it as he'd feel hanging in the air. Unpleasant. But Maksim did nothing in response. More over, Ruby shot a split Ventus and hit Maksim right inside the thickening fog, and the other split quietly moved the cloud above the Guests' head. Just in time for the two paralysed international guests breaking out of their petrified slumber to see the incoming lightning cloud.

[Spectator Thread: Morning]

RPing as Durmstrang iNPC Maksim Preobrazhensky. All dialogue in italics is spoken in Russian.

Once again, Maksim was reminded as to why Hogwarts was referred to as the finest wizarding school, or whatever nonsense it was. Of course, in his opinion, Durmstrang was far superior, but Hogwarts' duelling quality wasn't something anyone could laugh at. The three intense-looking students across from him looked like they wanted to dismember him from their stares alone, which made Maksim freeze up in mild, casual terror. Why couldn't they sling a few spells that missed by a hair, shake hands, and then leave and grab donuts together? He shot a glance at his two teammates, clenched his jaw, and readied his wand once more. Mamma mia... here we go again.

Ha! No silly spell could hold Amaury down, espcially not one from those Hogwarts swine. It took mere moments after he hit the floor for him to wrestle his way out of the magical binds, and as he got to his feet, he saw his teammate have similar success. Maksim was stock still in, probably, terror, but frankly, Amaury couldn't blame him. The Durmstrang boy was in a tough situation with his favorite French duelling partner out of commission for a moment. But Amaury was back in business, and those Hogwarts snakes had better be trembling in their fashionable boots.

A corner of Dmitri's mouth lifted as he watched the thick fog and mist cover the entirety of the opponent's side of the dueling arena. Try casting through that, the boy thought smugly to himself.

The Slytherin boy knew they had a lot on their plate at that moment, and he desperately wanted to add much more.

Raising his wand once more, he'd quip, "There's more where that came from, and I don't even need to see you to do them."

Singled out by Ruby's clever cast, their international guest faced the Viridian Viper with unenviable odds. With three of Slytherin's best of the senior league against a single victim, it was no wonder that the boy had frozen up with sudden intimidation. Even so, Astrea held little mercy for an opponent so unprepared that even a reflexive incantation could not escape them, instead remaining pitifully vulnerable to open attacks.

How fortunate for the single available target that Astrea deigned not to target them directly, but to burden their future chances. Within seconds, the other side of the piste had been overlaid with two separate casts of fog and their own lightning cloud, stemming any possible retaliation from their newly freed adversaries. A clean round, in Astrea's humble opinion, but one that could not guarantee any leisurely chance of rest.

Within moments, Hadashi broke free of the petrification. As if such a spell could hold him for long.
Upon getting up, he noticed two things. The cloud had moved, and now there was fog everywhere. Hadashi saw through this strategy pretty fast, though.

"Hm. Nothing we can't handle. Keep your heads cool."

Ruby acted quickly while two of the opponents were down, targeting the stupid cloud and the boy who remained standing with a Wind Jinx, watching as it played out exactly as intended. She was pleased to see Astrea and Dmitri’s spells also succeed this time, but apparently facing the Slytherins alone was too much for their opponent to bear, and he didn’t end up casting anything. Unfortunately, though, as she watched the fog roll in, she saw both of the other opponents break free of her perfectly good Petrificus, much to her annoyance. Her attention was momentarily pulled away by Dmitri making a comment about not needing to be able to see, piquing Ruby’s curiosity. Interesting. Was it just one of his typical confident taunts or had he actually learned how to cast well despite the fog in the time she had been away from duelling?
