The McDonald's Drive Thru Thread
july 12, 2023 | wexford, irelandxxxNo doubt, the most fantastic thing that the muggle world had to offer was McDonald's. Maggie had taken it for granted, she thought, in her time at Hogwarts. Going through a full school year before being able to consume the greasy, morally questionable morsels that fast food joints could offer. On holidays home, ones like Hanukkah and Christmas, Maggie wasn't allowed such wonderful tidbits. No point in fast food when you had uncomfortable, awkward family dinners. Likewise, the mere mention of such muggle concepts would be enough to strike fury into the Hawkins family.
When June Selwyn was invited to spend the better part of the summer at Maggie's house, she knew exactly what had to happen. June's muggle education. She'd been fed life on a silver spoon, one completely shielded by the pureblood lens. She'd never had McDonald's.
It had taken a week of begging Saoirse to take them, but she relented as soon as their neighbor agreed to watch Tessa for the day. It was go time.
Maggie sat in the back of their car--an old, dingy Pinto--and swung her feet against the back of her mother's seat, beaming as they drove. "Seriously, you're not ready for this. June, if you think the Great Hall meals were good, you're going to be blown away. McDonald's is the best food I've ever had, personally," and she was itching to get her hands on a certain purple milkshake. God, she'd missed the muggle world.
"It's really not that good. June, don't get your expectations too high. Magpie tends to exaggerate," Saoirse offered. June should know full well by now that Maggie's expectations were far too inflated for the circumstances of just about everything, but it never hurt to check.
Maggie hardly noticed her mother's traitorous words, pressing her face and palms up against the car window as they approached the golden arches. It was like being a child at Disneyland. It was more magical than Hogwarts. On a long bench outside the building was a shiny statue, sitting on one end with that devilish red grin, painted on like the world's most sinister circus clown. Which he probably was. Ronald McDonald, shoes big enough to hold host to two bowling balls, sat with that unwavering grin, expression frozen on in a display of horror and shock. Maggie loved him. "That's Ronald McDonald. I've been telling you about him. I love this specific McDonald's because it's got the Ronald statue, y'know?"
All in all, Maggie Hawkins probably needed to be submitted for psychological evaluation.mentioning @June Selwyn.

[quote]If June was the worst month, then July of 2023 was giving it a run for its money. With Phinehas and Louise officially splitting and needing time to deal with lawyers and annulation papers, June was asked where she wanted to spend the first part of her summer holidays. Well, the idea of staying at school for ANOTHER month sounded like a death wish, as June was desperate for a change in scenery. And with the sudden loss of the Bellamy girls, June had but one exuberant, loud, and wonderful place to turn to: Maggie Hawkins' place.
In the muggle world.
June had learned a lot of things in the past week. First, she learned what exactly this "Twilight" was that Maggie had told her so much about. Yes, she had been given descriptions and summaries and such, but Maggie had managed to pin down June and make her watch this movie almost as soon as she had arrived. Apparently, it was about the greatest love story ever told. Was it exactly June's cup of tea? No, but as much as she tried to hide it, deep down she really did enjoy it. And finally understood why Maggie wanted to play baseball at her birthday party last year.
She had also been introduced to the trials and tribulations of a small children's toy named Savannah Reed, who was a dog who went to school with other small toys resembling bug-eyed animals. It was, somehow, much more dramatic than Twilight. Muggle entertainment was certainly... different.
And now, June was learning just how much she disliked cars. They were small and cramped, the air was either frigid cold or hot and muggy, and you could feel the road beneath you, jostling you about. June had been trying to subdue her impulses to get sick in Mrs. Hawkins' car. That would be incredibly rude, probably.
As largely uninterested as June was in most things muggle, and as largely confused as she was for the need of the majority of what she encountered, there was one thing that did pique her interest; food. And Maggie had talked up a big name for Mick Donald's, where all June knew about it was "it's the best", "you're not ready for how good it is", and "I want to eat it every day for the rest of my life". So all in all June felt extremely informed about what kind of cuisine this place offered.
June turned and peered out the window as Maggie called attention to this Ronald figure. Ah yes, June remembered the diety-like figure Maggie had made him out to be. There he sat, a body too shiny with proportions just off and a smile that June could never forget her whole life long even if she tried. Her face scrunched just a tad, thank Merlin that Maggie was too busy looking out the window to notice. "He, um... Well, it's nice to put a face to the name."
Her gaze drifted upwards to the large "M" sign above them. Ah, "McDonald's". It must be Irish. "So, what exactly kind of food do they serve here?"
The car pulled to the side of the building, following signs plastered with the phrase "Drive Thru". June pointed at one, visibly confused. "They spelled 'through' incorrectly."

july 12, 2023 | wexford, irelandxxxWhile being a Hawkins, particularly of the half-blood variety, posed its challenges, Maggie truly didn't know what she'd do if she had been cursed. By cursed, of course, she meant being a Selwyn. Not because of anything against the family (it was as clear as anything that Maggie cared for June far too much to judge her based upon things like blood status), but rather because they'd never experienced the succulent, sweet joy of a good McDonald's burger.
Over the summertime, Maggie had learned that June truly didn't have a single clue about the things otherwise considered culture. She'd never seen Twilight, never watched Scooby Doo, never been entirely enthralled in the world of Littlest Pet Shop toys who were made to fight and gossip like teens in American TV shows.
Obviously, the task of teaching her had fallen upon Maggie's capable shoulders. And boy, did she deliver.
They'd seen just about everything over the summer, foregoing the school festivities they'd partaken in the year prior. Summer camp had been fun, sure, but it hadn't had a TV. Or wifi. Maggie could hardly survive the school year without her electronics, much less a whole summer.
"Uh, mostly burgers. And fries. Chicken nuggets," Maggie shrugged and picked at her thumbnail, painted with chipped pink nail polish that she worked to scrape off. "Ooh! Mom! Momma. Can we have McFlurries?"
Saoirse rolled her eyes and tapped the sides of the steering wheel. "Ten bucks the ice cream machine's broken."
Maybe Maggie wasn't a genius, at least not in the traditional, IQ sort of sense, but she was pretty sure that 'thru' was perfectly acceptable. That had nothing to do with her dyslexia diagnosis. Not at all. "You high or something? I mean, I'm pretty sure that's right--"
She very nearly would've launched into a whole argument had there not been a pounding at the car window.
At first glance, it might've seemed as if the Ronald McDonald statue poised on the bench had decided to make his grand debut as a living, breathing member of society. Why, you may ask? Well, because he was standing right outside the window. Obviously, the statue was still there, sitting unmoving on the wooden bench outside the establishment. Instead, the hastily applied white paint and crudely drawn smile indicated that this was something worse, something more sinister. A cosplayer. The Ronald McDonald wannabe knocked again on the window. "Hey, y'all got Venmo?"mentioning @June Selwyn.

[quote]June's eyes lit up as Maggie described what was quintessentially American cuisine. She'd always been intrigued by the descriptions of Ilvermorny and the curious things its students described when they visited. She began bouncing in her seat, the promise of ice cream only spurring on her excitement. June decided to ignore Maggie's attempt at a spelling bee (June had read Maggie's assignments, it would not have been much of a competition), and instead turn her attention to the large menu posted outside of the building."McDonalds, McFlurries... McDouble? Maggie what even is a 'Mic', and why are there two of them, and why-"
Thud thud.
As if time had slowed down, June's head turned towards the sound. And what she saw terrified her.
The man from the bench had come to life. Everything she had been taught about the muggle world had clearly been a lie because magic had happened RIGHT THERE, bringing this molded abomination to life. Her complexion went ghostly pale as she pressed in next to Maggie for protection (what protection she could offer June wasn't exactly sure of, but her friend had slapped someone on her behalf before). "Maggie," she whispered with a strained voice as Saoirse rolled down the window. "What is a Venmo, do we have one, and can we give it to him so that he leaves us alone?"
But knowing Maggie, she probably hadn't registered anything June said. Knowing Maggie, she was probably bursting at the seams ready to both meet and greet what seemed to be her childhood hero. June gulped. This was entirely unprofessional. Perhaps the McDonalds corporation should be informed of this through means of muggle electronic mail.
Perhaps.
