From somewhere in the distance, Della saw a jet of light traveling toward her, and she barely managed to miss it. She sent a knockback jinx in return, but Wyatt Starkey was similarly evasive. Then from behind her, a spell did hit. Sending her flying higher, right over the track. Unexpectedly, she realized that Hugh had sent it at her. It wasn't a mistake; this would help her get over the squid (which was unfortunate for other non-race-related reasons). Della decided not to dwell too hard on how her teammate had known that the Slytherin was gaining a lead and where her position was—all while wearing a blindfold. The boy was truly a marvel.

T his was a unique race, that was for sure. June watched as Colin was scooped up by the squid as Vale was knocked off her broom. Drat, their attempt to give the first year a taste of his own medicine had failed miserably.

But considering no one had died, vomited or fallen unconscious, the captain considered it an ongoing success.

Okay... so... as of right now, Wyatt was alive. He'd been a little thrown off by the descendo and was feeling a little sick from such a harsh fall. All things considered, Wyatt was in mostly good health, not to mention still in the lead. He did still, however, have mosps ahead. Wyatt knew from firsthand experience that mosps were not to be trifled with, and he was just a short way from trifling with them by flying past them at high speeds. We'll have to see how that pans out.

----Oh boy, Vale watched as Colin just escaped the grasps of a slimy squid, and the oldest student across both teams just get wrangled into the mess next.

Well, Vale was sure she was definetely not going to be having a lot of luck on her side to get through the mess she's seeing right in front of her. Not good, she thought. The urge to just simply turn around swim instead came through once more before she looked to see her captain. "Maybe it's only nice to snake people!" Vale blurted. Whether or not her mouth would get her into trouble is an entire matter left to fate.

The racers had suddenly spread out magnificently! Two Slytherin lads, Wyatt and Perc, were well ahead; his mate Vale and captain June were a little behind along with all the Gryffindorks. And best of all, Colin was no longer snogging the squid!

He wondered if Clair would kiss him after the race, knowing he'd been slimed all over by the giant squid! He heard Vale call out: "Maybe it's only nice to snake people!"

Colin called back cheerfully: "Dunno about that mate, but the squid isn't who I really wanted a kiss from!"

Della didn't disappear into the sky, so that was good. However, there was still a squid ahead. That was... not so good. For anyone. The Giant Squid was probably the most unpleasant obstacle a racer could come across on the track- which was a saying a lot considering all the nasty overgrowth, beasties, and elements that were often encountered. The squid was sticky, and slimy, and slippery, and getting caught was overall just a very uncomfortable and violating experience- like getting trapped inside the biggest, sweatiest hug. Just downright... nasty.

And yes, that association unfortunately came from personal experience- an experience that Slytherin racer, Colin McCoire, would find himself able to attest to. However, it would look as if he had gotten far worse than Xailah had when she got caught by the squid in her last race. Dear god, what was all this talk about him kissing the squid?!

The only way through the leviathan obstacle was, unfortunately, forward. A term Xailah had already come to face and accept the moment the creature had been spotted as only a small ripple in the lake. So, forward she went; hands bleeding white beneath their gloves due to how firmly they gripped onto Delta for dear life; body lowered to the broom's frame to make herself a smaller target. The lioness shot through the area, weaving between oncoming tentacles and large waves of water, until she was out of reach.

Until she thought she was out of reach. Any relief she had was very short lived as she felt a firm tug at the back of her broomstick. She felt her stomach and spirits plummet as she was immediately yanked downward. Some luck that was.

Ying brought her hands to cover her face like she was washing out her frustration and will to curse out loud. What the hell was going on during that race? Seemed the luck had turn its back completely at the lions' team! Ying just wished she had the real power to do anything to help them, but all she could do was staying at the benches seeing without being able to be more helpful...that was killing her nerves!

Even though it was a strategic move, it unnerved Della to be flying over the course. She should be down there with her team. She couldn't help wincing when she saw the squid snatch a red blur from the sky. Must be Xailah. She knew the sixth-year was more than capable of taking care of herself, but Della took her captain role seriously and she wanted to be there for her teammates.
