The bell ran, signaling the end of morning classes.
Wilby jumped up from his desk and bolted to put his books away, in a hurry to make himself scarce. He was as excited as his peopled-out mind could get, ready to go someplace quiet to unwind from this morning's classes. It had not been particularly stressful, but the professors had spontaneously called on him far more than usual. Or was being called on one or two times per class considered normal in this school? There were definitely several things different about this school than his primary school back in Felindre (his home town).
For example, the moving staircases. He had already had to redraw the map in his head twice trying to get to the library, but he eventually made it. He strolled through the shelves, calming down as the buzz of chatty students faded away between the covers of the well-loved books. He arrived at his favorite section: Magical Beasts.
Wilby scanned the shelves, searching for an interesting title. Titles like The Wilderman, Unkempt Curls of Rage and The Scaly Parts of the Deep wandered under his gaze, but Wilby didn't stop his search until he found a thick book that looked like it might crumble if he touched it. The only letters on the weathered binding were W.O.T.N.I.
Curious, Wilby reached for the book, but it was far too high for his short arms. Glancing around, Wilby saw nothing that he could use as a stand.
He studied the shelf for a moment. It was not as thick as the tree behind his home in Felindre, but it seemed sturdy. He climbed the shelves with practiced hands, although it was admittingly harder with a cloak.
There; he was in range now! He reached for the mysterious book...just as the shelf gave way.

[quote]June did not often meet people in typical ways. Assaults into the lake, plummeting from the heights of the quidditch pitch, and being locked inside a bathroom stall were not an ideal way to make first impressions, in June's mind. And with the remnants of an eye for reputation still lingering in the back of her mind from her first year, first impressions were very, very important.

Suffice to say, it was nice to not be on the receiving end of the "wrong end" of an introductory interaction.

Classes had been dismissed for the day, and in typical June fashion, the newly second-year Slytherin was determined to finish her assignments not just for the next week, but the week after that. And maybe also study up on the curriculum for after winter break. And perhaps also review third year's content.

This newest cohort of Slytherin first-years were... loud. Much louder than June's year was, at least it seemed like it. The common room was no longer a place for rest and respite, but ruckus and racket. Thus, June decided to try and adopt the library as her new study spot.

There had to have been a free table or something around a corner, one tucked away from prying eyes and nosy Ravenclaws. June turned down a near-empty isle, save for one Hufflepuff student unknown to her. Perhaps this way? June walked down the isle, watching as the boy began to reach and climb for a certain book. Before June could open her mouth to suggest using the Levitation charm instead of getting shoe prints all over the shelves, there was a loud crack.

Uh oh.

Seemed the Caretaker had a bookshelf she'd need to fix.

June rushed over to the aftermath. "Are you alright?"

Wilby crashed to the ground, the books from the shelf bouncing off his chest and legs and covering him in a whirl of pages. His head and back ached from the impacted and he placed hand on his skull.
Ouch.
“Are you alright?” came an unfamiliar voice.
Wilby shot into an upright position, realizing someone had just witnessed his failed attempt at climbing a library shelf.
“Yeah, sorry, I’m fine,” he said quickly. The librarian must have been nearby to get there so quick — Wilby froze.
It wasn’t the librarian, but a slytherin girl. She was blonde and looked slightly older than Wilby, maybe in her second or third year already. She was carrying an armful of textbooks, the titles of which seemed more advanced than the ones he had.
“Oh. Hi.” He stuck out his hand, regretfully realizing this scene was her first impression of him. “I’m wobbly—I mean Wilby.”
He absent-mindedly began searching around with his free hand for the strange book. Perhaps if he could find it, he could make a getaway to the farthest corner of the library -- or maybe he should just go back to his dorm. No, there would be people there. Maybe the dungeon?
After he cleaned up this mess of course.

[quote]The boy was certainly thrown off by not only such a fall but by the sudden appearance of a stranger. June, observing the boy's bewildered state, was equal parts amused and concerned as the Hufflepuff, Wilby, introduced himself. He hadn't hit his head, had he?

June took Wilby's hand, shaking it with a confidence only a Selwyn could carry. "June Selwyn, a pleasure to meet you." She offered a friendly smile, trying to dissipate the embarrassment in the air. Wilby was clearly looking for something, perhaps whatever book he'd been trying to reach earlier. "Here, let me help," June offered. She pulled out her wand from her robe, aiming at the now-broken bookshelf. "Reparo." the fragmented pieces of wood seamlessly rejoined, leaving no trace of the damage that had befallen the bookshelf. With a satisfied nod, June admired her handiwork. "There we are," she smiled.

Redirecting her attention to the scattered books that lay strewn across the floor, June gently placed her own stack of books onto the ground as she began picking up the mess alongside Wilby. With a gentle smile, she inquired, "You sure were determined to get a book, may I ask what it was you were looking for?"

Wilby's arm was jostled by the girl's firm handshake. "June Selwyn," she introduced herself, "a pleasure to meet you." June smiled warmly.

"You as well," Wilby responded, trying to recuperate. He stood and looked around at the pile of books he was caught in the midst of. He tried scanning the titles, looking for the strange letters he had spotted earlier. What were they again? W.A.T.N...?

"Here, let me help you," June offered, pulling out her wand. "No, no," Wilby protested, "don't bother; I can clean--"

"Reparo." June said confidently, aiming at the shelf. The two broken pieces of wood rose back to their original positions and knitted themselves into one whole piece again. Wilby had never really built up the confidence to use much magic outside of class. His wand was stored and likely collecting dust within the folds of robes.

June smiled and bobbed her head, evidently satisfied with her work. "There we are."

"Thanks," Wilby said gratefully. He bent down and started picking up the books and returning them to the shelf, checking titles as he went. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw June set down her books on the floor and begin helping to return the books. With a small smile, she observed, "You sure were determined to get a book; may I ask what it was you were looking for?"

"Honestly?" Wilby responded, grateful for the conversation, despite how it was brought about, "I was just looking for something new to read. Too many textbooks and not enough story, if you get my meaning." He gave a shy smile at his own comment. "Do you come here often?"

There it was: the book. "Aha!" he exclaimed, snatching it off the ground. "Found it!" The letters on the binding were W.O.T.N.I. and they stood for Wizards Of The Nasidian Isles. What ever that meant. No matter, it was something new to read, so it was just what he was looking for! "I saw this earlier. It's what I was reaching for when -- well, you know. Know anything about it?"
