Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor: Match 5
Lucia's spell failed. Maybe, in the heat of the moment, she'd pronounced the incantation slightly wrong, or she'd made a mess of the wand movement, but either way, nothing happened. "Oh for Merlin's sake!" Rose Moon had just witnessed Lucia fail a spell. Well, at least nobody could say that Lucia was cheating? But then the moderator called for a halt and Lucia paused, holding herself as still as she could. Was something wrong? A few seconds went by before the duel resumed, and it took Lucia off-guard. "What?" Was no explanation going to be given? A shout from the audience - @Lindsey Springhall's voice - further confused Lucia, and although she enjoyed the rush of happiness that came from knowing she had supporters in the stands, she wasn't quick enough on her feet to recover from her moment of uncertaincy. Emma was hit by two more spells and then Lucia pulled herself together. "Hang in there," she muttered to her duelling partner. It wasn't the end yet.

Rose aimed her wand at Emma, and muttered, “Ventus.” A jet of wind shot from her wand towards Emma, catching her in its gusts of wind. Kim’s spell hit Emma, too. She turned and nodded at him, a smile on her face.
However, both of the Hufflepuffs kind of just… stood there. Rose furrowed her brow at them. To simply not do anything could put you at jeopardy, and could be the difference between winning and losing in a duel. What had happened to both of them to make them freeze like that?
Rose shook the thought away. If they weren’t going to cast spells, that wasn’t her problem. All they were doing was helping her and Kim win.
Not that she needed it.

Emma had no idea what had happened. Maybe being the constant target had shaken her, maybe she just had a moment who knew, but she quite literally just froze. Honestly this round was not her best and she hated that it was the last round of the season. There would be no redeeming herself until next year after this and she honestly felt like it was a pretty poor showing on her part. At least Lucia had managed to cast a couple of spells. Realizing she was quickly entering a downward, repetitive spiral, Emma forced herself to smile, just a small one to make sure that it didn’t look….too demented and nodded at her partners encouragement. “Right! Can only go up honestly.” Emma said and then cringed as she realized she may have just jinxed them. And since luck did not seem to be on their side at all, they didn’t need even the hint of bad luck.

| ─── | Once the duel resumed, Kim quickly cast his favorite spell.
There was a reason why one of his nicknames was the Flipendo Prince, and it was quite obvious why. This particular spell was one he was very comfortable casting and usually tended to be able to hit his opponents with it on a regular basis. It was also one of the first spells he'd learned too. The spell was close to his heart, so to speak, and it was never surprising to see it coming from him during matches. In fact if he went through an entire duel without casting it at least a few times, people might wonder whether the duelist they were watching was actually Kim. A smirk came to his lips as Kim's favorite spell hit its intended target... If he had been a spectator, Kim would have felt sympathy for Emma. But he was a duelist and Emma was one of his opponents, so he didn't feel bad at all attacking her right now. After all, there could only be one winner, Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. And he was banking on Gryffindor to win because Kim was a very determined individual and wouldn't give up until the very end. Rose also made contact with her target, which made a very successful round for the Lions. The Badgers weren't doing too well this particular round... It seemed as if the brief respite had done them more harm than good. Because the two badgers didn't even try to avoid the spells coming at them from the twin Gryffindors. Not to mention the fact that both their spells fizzled out before they could even try to get them to work. Was it nerves on their part, or did it have to do with the fact that Emma was probably about to be taken out? |

What Hui-Ming witnessed was likely one of the most unexpected sequence of events he had experienced in an already one-sided match. Knowing that the Gryffindors had been focusing on little Emma, the Hufflepuffs reacted in an unexpected way.
Hui-Ming would have expected Emma to try and dodge out of the way of the incoming spells, while Lucia might mount a counterattack. Instead, the Hufflepuffs had been slow out of the gate when there had been a resumption of the duel, and Lucia reacted defensively, trying to heal her partner. While this might have been a perfectly viable strategy at another time, it also had the unfortunate side effect of forcing Miss Wynn to stand stay put while the healing spell took effect. The younger Hufflepuff burst into motion afterwards, firing off an Incendio while trying to twist out of the way of the inevitable volley coming her way.
Alas, in her attempt to shoot and dodge, the first-year managed to do neither satisfactorily. Emma's Incendio was off the mark, even as Kim connected once again with yet ANOTHER Flipendo. For a moment, it seemed that Emma could have taken in, but then she toppled, falling over like a puppet with their strings cut off. And this was when a spell by Rose made contact. A safety measure, in case her partner had missed, or intentional overkill?
"HALT" Hui-Ming had to pause the duel once again, as the younger badger was taken off the field, leaving the Gryffindors in a comfortable lead.
"Now, if both sides are ready--" there was a hint of rebuke there, for those that had a sharp ear. But the moment passed far too quickly for anyone to comment on it. "You may RESUME."

Lucia tried her best to heal Emma, but it was no use. Kim's spell slammed into her and she crumpled to the ground - and then Rose followed suit. "What was that Rose?!" Lucia blurted out, horrified at the girl's apparent viciousness. "She was already down, for Merlin's sake!" Just because Rose didn't like Lucia didn't give her the right to take it out on another Blazing Badger. Yet another thing for her to apologise for...

Emma was concerned but trusted that between her and her partner they would find some way out of this snafu. She felt tired, and aches were growing more frequent in various places on her body. Honestly she'd like nothing better than to be in her bed in her dorm, taking a lazy nap, but as they always said, there's no rest of the weary. She did her best to go over her next move in her head, as she waited for Lucia to cast the healing spell on her.
Emma felt a bit of energy hit her as the spell began to work and some of the aches lessened, but she didn't take much more time to think, hurrying to get her spell off, while twisting her body. Unfortunately neither worked well. Emma's last thought before the world went dark was that she really had not saved the best for last and that she now knew how Angelfyre felt in their first duel.

There were 5 more rounds left and anything could happen but the odds were looking in favor of the Lions. Kim wasn't going to let go of this advantage, not if he could help it, he was competitive by nature. If he participated in something where there was a winner, he always tried to be the winner. Or the runner-up. The runner-up was decent enough because it meant he was almost there. Which in turn made him think if he just worked a bit harder and trained a bit longer, he'd become a winner. Winning was the best possible outcome of course. But being runner-up was not something he would be mad at. The position had potential for him.... But if he came in third or last, he'd be really frustrated and mad, not at his opponents but at himself. Since if he got those positions, it meant he sucked and was the worst of them. Of course, this did not apply to everyone, this was merely Kim's own thoughts on the matter. Everyone thought of things differently. As his current spell, the Knockback Jinx again, struck Emma, Kim couldn't help but smirk. He'd come so far from his first official duel, back during the summer. The Knockback Jinx had been his favorite back then as well.... However, he'd ended up missing multiple times in a row. It had been quite embarrassing, especially since that spell had been one of the first ones he'd learned. But now, look at this! He'd casted it twice and he'd hit his target twice in a row! Kim had indeed improved but that was to be expected because he'd trained and practiced for long periods of time. To ensure his spells would go off without a hitch during the real deal. It seemed as if his determination had paid off in the end. Hopefully, his spells would continue to hit his opponents for the remaining rounds. As Rose made contact with her spell too, Kim glanced over at her and nodded. They were on a roll right now. One down. One to go. As long as Rose kept her focus and Kim kept his, they had a good opportunity to win this match. Emma's last spell hadn't managed to hit her opponent and Lucia had decided to try to heal her partner. Even though Lucia was successful with her spell, it wasn't enough to keep Emma on her feet with both the Lions attacking her at the same time. It was a shame but there was always a clear winner in a duel, one side or the other. Unless, it ended in a draw. But that was rare. Ming paused the duel to let Emma be carried off the platform. While this was happening, Kim looked over at Rose. He had an idea as to what to do for the remaining opponent and made eye contact with his partner. |

Rose and Kim both cast the same spell towards Emma. “Flipendo,” she murmured. The spell connected with Emma just seconds after Kim’s did. Rose flinched. Dueling was fun- the exhilarating feeling of winning, of casting spells. But seeing others fall unconscious wasn’t something Rose thought she would ever get used to. Emma would be fine, Rose knew that much. She might have taken a couple of blows to her pride, but nothing that happened in the duel would have been permanent.
Rose brushed it away. Yes, Emma would be fine. Then, she heard Lucia snap at her from across the dueling stage. Rose rolled her eyes. Now who was being the sore loser? Rose wouldn’t just stand by and let Lucia think her actions vicious, though. She had to defend her pride, didn’t she? “I cast my spell before Kim’s even hit her,” she said. It had to be clear that she wasn’t trying to humiliate the badgers or anything- it was a dueling tactic for her and Kim to both cast, in case one of them missed. Lucia was just upset that she was losing, that was all.
The redhead lifted her wand as the moderator spoke up again, preparing to start the duel again. It was time to finish this.

Despite his effort, Kim failed to cast the Blindfolding Spell. Maybe he lost his focus or he just messed up the wand movement, whatever it was, it wasn't good for him. Luckily for the lions, Rose did manage to cast a spell. As the expelliarmus hit Lucia, she would feel her wand fly out of her hand, making her not only without a partner but also without a wand.
However, just before her wand had left her, Lucia had managed to cast a spell of her own. The Wind Jinx the girl had conjured made its way over to Rose. Even though Rose had tried to dodge the incoming spell, it still hit her. However, it seemed like the wind wasn't as strong as it usually was and she had an easier time moving.
