Really, it was Qrow's own stupid fault for sitting this close to their cousins in the first place, but, in their defence, they hadn't even meant to let go of their spoon.
Effie had been throwing peas at their head from further down the table for most of dinner, and, being utterly sick of it, the first year had jokingly placed carrots on their spoon to threaten her with in a futile attempt to get her to stop.
Unsurprisingly, it didn't work.
Of course, that was all well and good until they let go of said spoon of carrots and, instead of hitting the intended target, the orange vegetables flew past her head and smacked right into a fellow first-year Slytherin.
This was not the plan.
Lucian Mornstern was not somebody that Qrow knew personally—mostly just in passing as they were both pure-bloods, but they hadn’t much interacted—but he also wasn't somebody they could be bothered to get into any form of conflict with, especially knowing how he often got into trouble himself as well as the strong likelihood that his family somehow knew their parents; the last thing they needed was to get a howler.
And so, in all the redheads' infinite wisdom, they ducked under the table and kindly left somebody else to take the fall.
As much as it was unintentional, they couldn't help but think that it was, at least, likely to be funny.

This Was NOT The Plan!
Ava found dinner to be the most relaxing part of the day, sometimes. Especially on days like these when there never seemed to be a break.
The day had been nonstop, the morning just kept feeling earlier. Instead of feeling like she was waking up at a decent, she felt like she was waking up at 3 am. Of course, it wasn’t 3 am. The sun was already rising when she got up in the mornings, and it had long set when she let her weary head rest at night. Maybe spring had thrown off her schedule. After all, the sun did rise earlier now than in the winters.
Morning were the worst. She could write an entire essay about how bad they were. But she didn’t, of course. She was aligned with ‘good’ now (not that she hadn’t been before, that would be ridiculous) and it took all her will power not to say the sarcastic thoughts running through her head. Maybe that was why she was so exhausted. Because she had been taking up so much energy not saying things.
The classes that day had ran late, or maybe she was just slow, but by the time she made it to dinner she hadn’t had time to change out of her robes. Change out of her robes, it was a good thing she didn’t, because she soon saw a massive glob of carrots flying over her head, spraying a little onto her robes, and landing smack dab onto none other than Lucian Mornstern with a ‘SLAP’! Oh c’mon how could she contain herself…She let out an audible snort and quickly turned away from the table so that they couldn’t see the wide smile spreading across her face.

I was trying to have a quiet night. That’s all I wanted. One. Quiet. Night.
I was eating dinner, some nice mash currently being chewed. I was very sad to note that Ava was sat not that far from me, it was making me feel very on edge. Every time I look at her all I see is that night, her looming in my bed.
Splat.
I was brought out of my thoughts when something wet hit the side of my face. I reacted and quickly wiped my cheek only to find out it was carrots. “Who the hell did that?” I demanded, looking around the table. I got a napkin and started to wipe my cheek. I glared at Ava, the girl currently laugh (it didn’t even click that I saw wisps of hair disappear under the table). “I swear to Merlin! Who threw carrots at me?” my tone firm. Not in the mood! Not since two days ago on the 1st.
“Oi, psycho! Was that you?” I asked harshly, glaring at her. I looked around the table to see how everyone was taking this, were there any guilty faces? I did click that there was an odd looking space missing but I was too mad to inquire. “Come on then? Tell me?” I grabbed a handful of mash and smushed it in Ava’s face.
“Someone’s gotta pay,” I muttered, returning to eating.

This Was NOT The Plan!
Most of the kids seemed to be minding their own business, Ava included. She couldn’t be bothered with what was happening around her, instead thinking forward to what she would be doing in a few hours, snuggling up in her bed and reading a nice book, where all the characters didn’t hate her. Heck, they didn’t even know she was there. That would be a nice change from the stares she still received walking down the halls of the castle. So what that she earned herself the reputation? At least she had stopped herself.
Now, I did start paying attention to the slytherin table once I realized that gob of food had gone flying. Who wouldn’t?
Lucian was quick to react to the splatter of food on his ‘perfect’ face. He shouted out a quick question and grabbed a napkin to wipe his cheek. Although Ava didn’t see that, she was too busy shielding her laugh from the rest of the table. She did hear his second question, though. “I swear to Merlin! Who threw carrots at me?” She glanced at him, wondering why he was so angry about a bit of food. Something else had happened--recently--and she was determined to find out what.
“Oi, psycho! Was that you?” He asked Ava rudely, glaring at her. “What do you think?” She said sweetly, rolling her eyes at the same time. Really, this was getting ridiculous. If Ava so much as started a food fight she would be expelled, and she sure as hell was not going to waste her chance on this demon of a boy. “Come on then? Tell me?” He said. “If I really wanted to harm you, don’t you think I would’ve done it in--oh, I dunno--a larger way than a foodfight?” She had just finished her sarcastic statement when he grabbed a handful of food and smushed in into her face. “Oh. My. God. It is so on!” She also grabbed food from her tray and was about to launch it across the table at him when she realized just how severe the consequences would be for her. With a pout on her face, she set the food back on her plate and stood up in search of a staff member to deal with this mess.
With a glance back, Ava realized Lucian had totally returned to eating his food like nothing had happened. “Fuck you,” she muttered under her breath.

It was one of those normal days, do your morning routine, go and eat breakfast, do morning classes, lunch, afternoon classes, and now finally dinner. André got some steak and mashed potatoes for it. It was a classic dinner meal, but it was great. Hogwarts food was always great. He was at the hufflepuff table enjoying his meal.
That was until the flying food. Carrots, peas, and now mash. Three was no way. A food fight? A smirk formed on the first years face. Now he wasn't one to normal get in trouble, but come on a food fight? How often could you take part of one of these?
A Slytherin boy seamed to be pretty upset by the flying orange vegetable. André scooped some corn onto his spoon and aimed for this boy. Maybe a bit of corn would lighten his mood? After all this would be fun! Despite the mess it may cause. He pulled back the spoon before letting it fly. Let the fight begin!! Although he thought he had good aim, the corn misses and flew at a Slytherin first year. (Ava) oops.
Ok, not his original target. But still. He at least hit someone! That was still a win. Or was it a lose? It didn't matter. Having his little fun he smiled and went back to eating the mashed potatoes on his plate. It did appear that she was now upset about the food the other boy had thrown at her. Now he was starting to regret his decision. It still did take quite a lot not to scream Food Fight! Like one of those muggle movies.

♡─Meals in the great hall were all more or less the same, the monotony that followed something the first year had grown used to. On the rare occasion that there was the performance of a howler, the fascination held a life of about 3 minutes before reverting back to mindless discussion. That was something in abundance during Hogwarts feasts, hundreds of voices overlapping the other whilst fighting for top volume.
While the constant bore was less than optimal, it was hardly the end of the world. After all, it thankfully wasn't her on the receiving end of those frightening letters. The green and silver embellished table usually did well to maintain conversation anyway, apart from the typical heated debate about blood-purism here and there; if 'here and there' meant always..
It'd been made clear in recent months that some families continued to pass down their prejudice, regardless of the modern age evolving. The idea left Maeve nothing short of bewildered, despite having encountered plenty of the same ideologies in her youth. Ironically another deal, the concept of "blood-traitorism" was used in the same malicious fashion. If the term were to be applied in its ridiculous, yet literal sense, Maeve fit the bill. The idea of open acceptance now a sin, needless to say she would admit guilt every time.
The next sip of her water was interrupted by the sound of a splat just inches away from her. A boy, no older than her clearly distraught from the food that had made impact against him. For a moment Maeve considered asking if he was alright, curious herself as to who the culprit had been. It seemed her chance had been wasted, however, watching as he shoved food onto a fellow Slytherin instead. Were they serious? Perfect way as ever to show just how─ "Foolish." she muttered, eyes now sharp at the sight of their petty squabble.
"Knock it off, will you?" The words were barked out, much harsher than what she had thought capable. "Take your little lover's spat outside." The last comment was added purely out of spite, the idea of the two being 'lovers' far from what she knew to be true.

That psycho had the gall to speak to me in that tone? “Watch your mouth,” I sneered at her, “I see you have to be very careful with what you do. That’s what happens when you nearly murder someone,” the fun I could have with this! The tight robe she is waking ok at the minute as she has just gotten back! Oh I was so mad at her but I think i’ve finally got past the fear. Finally saw past the looming figure with the knife and seeing the mudblood that was too scared to finish the job. “Weak. Pathetic-” I was interrupted by a girl on the table.
“Uh- don’t tell me what to do,” I said back to her, then scoffed as she called us lovers. “Lovers? Bloody lovers?” I picked up a gravy boat and got closer to the Slytherin girl before throwing some gravy all over her. “Take your ‘lovers spat’ with you as you get changed darling,” I said condescendingly, taking my seat again. “If you hadn’t noticed, pretty sure something came flying from over there,” I gestured to the other tables. Oh boy are there some bad excuses for Lions over there! “Maybe it was a Badger. They aren’t all wussies. Same how like how not all Gryffindork’s are brave,” I said loudly, munching on some toast.

───── The day had turned out to be dull. She had woken up pleasantly, and was in a tranquil mood, humming softly. But, as the day passed, the professors' monotonous lectures nearly put her to sleep. She didn't mind most of her classes, but there was something about today -- it felt like everything was just so sluggish. Each class and lesson taught made her slouch more, and she emitted a generous amount of yawns throughout the day.
Now, it was dinner. She hadn’t found much interesting stuff occurring in the Great Hall which added to her boredom. Lilliana always thought that dinner was generally peaceful, sure there was the occasional incident that caught her attention briefly, but not often. That changed rather quickly.
Lilliana gazed at some carrots as they flew across the table, hitting Lucian’s face with a loud smack!
Lilliana let out a low chuckle, peering at his expression. He demanded who hit him with the carrots, to which he immediately accused Ava. Alright, she couldn't blame him for that, especially after what had happened in the boy's dorm a while back. Then he smashed her face with a fistful of food. Gross, Lilliana thought, wrinkling her nose. The blonde-haired girl hadn’t interacted with Ava really, after their meeting at the end-ish of October. But, she still felt a tad bit sorry for her.
Then, all the way from the Hufflepuff Table, some corn was slingshotted over, hitting Ava! “Yikes,” She mumbled. The first year looked for the person who had shot the corn, her eyebrows shooting up when her eyes landed on them. Oh. She remembered them. They rode the train with her, they were in the same compartment when coming to Hogwarts, right? Indeed, it was. “André?” Lilliana said aloud. She glanced at Ava, “You alright?” She asked them, but she was still biting back a laugh.
Then another Slytherin’s voice joined in, in a sharp, disapproving tone. Lover’s spat? Lilliana didn't even bother to hide her snort.

In just a few minutes, the Great Hall had turned from a reasonably peaceful dinner (or as much as one could be at Hogwarts), to a series of insults and flying food. Both were hurled, and with much venom, but they didn't always land on the intended target. It was utter chaos, complete lunacy, raving madness and Nora? Well, she was blissfully unaware of all of it. She, unlike the other members of her house, wasn't even in the hall.
It was lucky for her that when it was time to go to dinner, she'd been fast asleep. Her pillows had called to her... And who was she to deny them? Unfortunately, her sweet slumber couldn't last forever, and she soon woke up in panic. Nora hated being late for things (even though she always was), and she was definitely behind the others. Blearily, she threw on some jeans, pulled a sweater over her undershirt, and slid on her boots before rushing up to the Hall. And she in no way expected what she ended up seeing when she opened those large, impending doors.
Nora was a bit nervous to, but she went over to sit at her table. Watching the drama, she snickered a bit at some of their 'insults' and 'comebacks'. Like, what were they, third graders? And when another hunk of food found its way into another student's lap, she couldn't help but let out a full blown cackle. It was ridiculous, and she didn't care if her outburst offended anyone. Who were they to talk, in the state that they were in now?

♡─The brown substance splattered against the front of her robes was warm and very, very sticky. Maeve's eyes widened in disgust and soon after, anger. She hadn't been lying when she said that meals were usually uneventful, though this was clearly anything but. Nothing was more obnoxious than an arrogant jerk! A type that seemed to be kept in endless supply in the house she called 'home'. Right about now, the so-called 'wussy' Hufflepuffs sounded like an infinitely better alternative.
"What the hell is wrong with you?!" The voice that spoke was far more raised this time around, true vexation clinging to her thick Irish accent. Now was certainly not the time, nor place, to cause a scene; but by Merlin she'd be lying if she said that cherry pie didn't look tempting.
The sound of giggles filling the table was enough to draw reality back, the ridiculous ordeal clearly humous to the other first years surrounding them. She'd only be adding gas to the fire if retaliation was the route she chose, though still considerably worth it by her standards. If there was one thing Maeve Selwyn was not, it was letting people walk all over her. Brown eyes stared blazingly at the boy once more, her prior sympathy long gone.
"You sure have a way with women, get it from daddy?" A scoff followed, clear two could play this game. "Have fun in detention, asshole." Amongst her best efforts did she speak without quiver, the rare vulgarity escaping her lips almost shocking to Maeve herself. Words like 'shit' or 'fuck' were actively kept out of her vocabulary, seeing no proper use for them in general. Though while the flames continued to rise higher, the insult felt only appropriate. Her head turned back to her own plate, food staying on it. "What a git." She said to whomever had been sitting beside her, the gravy only seeping farther into the fabric.
