Day 2 Spectator

June was not the type to be late for things. In fact, June was the sort of person to consider being 5 minutes early for an event to be “late”. And so showing up at 10:32 am to the dueling club was an absolute disaster in the eyes of the young Slytherin.

She had good reason, though. A morning of broom racing drills had left the captain less than fresh and presentable. A quick trip to her dorm room for sprucing up (and I do mean quick, many a dirty look was thrown her way as she rushed through the halls) had delayed her ever-so-slightly. Her hair was still slightly damp from washing it, pulled up into a bun to keep it out of her face.

“Sorry, excuse me, pardon me.” June slid through the crowd of gathered students as she made her way to an empty spot with a good view of the match she was most interested to observe. While fellow racing captain Starlee was dueling this morning as well (and from the looks of things, was doing quite well), it was the likes of Avery Leveret who would receive June’s focus and attention. She recognized his dueling partner, the pair had somehow ended up working on the welcome wagon for the new cohort of snakes together. June realized she knew far more duelists than she realized, which was odd, as she’d never felt the need to come and observe a match until now.

As June settled in the best spot she could find mid-match, she did her best to catch Avery’s eye. If the first-year spotted June in the crowd, she’d smile and wave. “Show them why they shouldn’t mess with us,” she’d mouth to him with a smirk. This was sure to be entertaining.

Match 2 [ Morning Slot ]

Considering how useful Fowl was during their last duel, he figured he should see how she’s faring without him by her side. It would be hilarious if she lost her duel this time around. Then it would be a possible conclusion that the only factor towards her achievement in winning any duel is if he’s there with her or not. Well, to be fair that was not the exact truth. But when had Hanako cared about honesty? His favourite way of spinning it was whichever reason that pisses off Fowl the most. And him being the reason she ever won anything definitely would anger her.

He hadn’t known when it started. After they went on their disastrous date, he hadn’t really bothered with her much. Perhaps it was true when they said duelling changes you. Having unexpected ways to bring two people who are far from friends to develop some sort of…connection. And when they talked in the hospital bed after their duel ended well..he did seen a few different sides of her. It was too early to tell if that was good or bad. Regardless, the conclusion was similar. It was fun to rile her up.

So he did his best too. Whistling at her and even gaining her attention had him struggling to hold back a chuckle. However, that would be the last time he had an urge to laugh. What were the Hufflepuffs even doing? One shrouded the platform with dense fog while the other was frozen. It was difficult to pin-point their location. This was easier done if he was on the platform, but his heightened senses did not replace his eyesight. Hanako tsked at the scene.

Worst of all? Fowl seemed awfully friendly to her new partner. Another newbie whom Hana hadn’t had the interest of knowing until this moment. Just who was he to skillfully work alongside Fowl as if they had done it before? What the friggin hell? So all she did was give him a hard time when they were partners, but suddenly this guy comes in and she’s actually a decent spellcaster?! Where were the insults? The pesky comments?! An irritated huff escaped him. He was quite glad the fog obscured her vision.

He was not jealous. It’s just that this was a great injustice that this newbie got better treatment than Hanako himself, who on multiple occasions had saved her butt ( except that one time where he let her pass out by fire but whose counting? ). Just who was this kid? Another victim to her charm? Or perhaps a questionable character who happens to be on the same wavelengths as her? Being on the same wavelengths as Pea Elena Fowl…, Hanako had to admit this kid piqued his curiosity somewhat.

His gaze remained on the pair. Or at least.. where he assumed they were underneath the blanket of this fog. His gaze softened to a mildly interested gaze.

We’ll just see how the duel goes~

Valarie had finally decided out of curiosity to watch her first duel. Since Valarie had never seen a duel or been in one, she had no idea what to expect. Walking in, Valarie quickly discovered her cousin, second cousin to be exact, was one of the duelists. Valarie grinned at the sight of her cousin. She would have to wish her a congratulations later. Valarie found a spot along the wall to stand to watch the duel. Valarie scanned the crowd briefly for a familiar face. After her first sweep, there seemed to be no one in the crowd she knew. She looked around again this time more desperate. That’s when she spotted Ava Winchect. Valarie had not seen the Slytherin hardly at all since they first met at the sorting ceremony and once again when they jumped in the lake. Just thinking back at the memory of the freezing cold lake brought chills and guilt to Valarie. With no other option but Ava to watch the duel with, she wandered over to her.
“Hi, Ava! I’m not sure if you remember me, Valarie Song? It’s okay if you don’t. Would you be interested in watching the duel together?” asked Valarie with a nervous tremor in her voice. Prepared for anything, she was ready to walk away at the first sign Ava had no interest in watching with her.

He was good. Quite good. But the victory had been quite empty as it seemed as if the Hufflepuff girls had forgotten to bring their wits with them to the duel. Avery was angry. Oh yes, his face, his movements, his very essence had become sharp, deadly. It was a glorious sight.

June watched as the pair of snakes expertly unleashed a tirade of spells against one of the badgers. A wild look crossed her face as she watched the spells volley back and forth. Oh, this was fun. There was a completely different art to spell casting and strategy when it was the only thing you had to deal with. And while the thrill didn't quite seem as appealing as rocketing through the sky at breakneck speed, it certainly looked powerful. Perhaps June would duel someone next time she had a problem with them instead of attempting to dig up dirt.

Smoke surrounded the piste, shrouding the four students. June heard Avery's voice pierce through the fog, his figure a silhouette against the thick vapor. This kid was quickly climbing the rungs of June's requirements for respect. It was impressive, really.

June cupped her hands around her mouth, if Avery couldn't see her, perhaps she could make her voice heard to show support. "Show them what a Leveret can do!"

While Ava had been focused particularly on Avery in his duel, evaluating his moves to the best of her ability, an old friend has arrived. Ava paid the new arrivals no mind, instead focusing on the duel happening. It was going surprisingly well, and she had the urge to cheer the slytherin duo on, despite one of them being a sort of enemy. She had dueled Avery once, and she recognized the cool calm with which he held his wand. He had a firm stance, and she could see the same calmness now that he had had in her own duel against him.

With a jump, she turned to the voice that had begun talking to her. It was Valarie. She panicked, not having interacted with Val since the beginning of the school year. Ava hadn’t talked to her since…the event. She began backing away, panicked. What did this girl want from her? To yell at her? To pry every detail of that nightmare from her?

No. Ava thought she had moved on. She had learned to avoid. But in her moment of distraction, here came her worst nightmare. A friend, turning on her.

She turned on her heel and ran forward, turning her head so she could keep her eyes on Valarie and make sure she wasn’t chasing her down. and because she couldn’t see anything in front of her, she had the misfortune to run straight into Damion White.
