Somehow the year had raced by, and here they were, gearing up for the third and final stage of the duelling season. Each stage was weighted equally but this one felt heavier, the knowledge that this was the last chance to take the championship adding to the general pressure of competing. Two Slytherin matches would be going on next to this one, but at this point the best Bridget could do was wish them luck and focus on moderating this duel. What would happen, would happen.
"Can I please have Evelynn Decipio, Piérre Marchonné, Phaedra Stavrou, and Cassius Eden to the stage?" Bridget waited for the four duellists to take their places and look ready to start. Of all of them, she was least familiar with Cassius. Phaedra she'd seen just last stage in this same position, and she knew both Evelynn and Piérre, though she hadn't faced them on the duelling stage yet.
"Any last questions?" This was the senior league, they all knew what they were doing, but it was always worth the check. With that out of the way, Bridget retreated from the line of fire. This was sure to be an interesting duel: everyone knew Phaedra was a force to be reckoned with, but Cassius was as of yet a wildcard. And Evelynn and Piérre, if she recalled correctly, had been partnered before, so had that established chemistry. It would be interesting to see those dynamics play out.
"Begin!"

"Opportunities multiply as they are seized."~ Sun TzuGrinning broadly as he heard his name called, Piérre traipsed up to the stage alongside Evelynn. They were getting paired up together again, and while their first outing had been a bit rough as a duo, Piérre was now two duels smarter and had a bit of a plan that he had been cooking up alongside the little plot that he had finished executing on his brother and the curious Valentin Schnell..
The results of that outing had been... intriguing to say the least, but well worth the plot twists and the obfuscations that happened along the way. All in all, Piérre believed that it was a total success. Everything that could have happened in the best of ways, did. Everything that Piérre had planned to happen on that day did happen.
And now here he was with a white shirt with harvest gold yellow short sleeves. He was wearing shin-length khakis and ankle-length mustard-yellow socks matched with his extremely scuffed black shoes that had once been shiny when brand new but was now essentially falling to pieces with grass stains and scuff marks thanks to how the kid sometimes dragged his feet on the ground or how he tumbled wildly through the outdoors without a care in the world for how he looked.
He remembered that Evelynn had been paired up with Alan Vanes, another former Quidditch player and an amazing person of an upperclassman; he also remembered that together the two of them had faced off against Dmitri. Piérre didn't quite understand why such an edgy-sounding name as so whispered in fear almost as if he was the same level as Tom Riddle among the individuals of the dueling rule. It was just another name, and to be honest, it wasn't even that good of a name. It sounded boring and almost cliché, because truthfully the first thing he thought of the moment he heard the name was the love interest of Princess Anastasia in Disney's Anastasia and that was just kind of weird. Piérre quite like his middle name much better; Luigi, the Famous Fighter.
But that wasn't the point; the point was that Evelynn and he were going to rock this stage and learn from where they had fallen short the first time... even if they were paired up against an upperclassman that most certainly had a more expansive arsenal than they did. Piérre knew the Confringo spell had slowly been becoming a staple of several of the upper years (including Dmi-forgot-the-I-after-the-D-because-it's-pronounced-like-"Dimitri"-or-"Deemetri"-but-it's-apparently-spelled-"Dmitri"-for-some-strange-and-unintuitive-reason)... and he wasn't really anxious to have a taste of that particular spell this soon in his life if he could help it.
Loose and bouncy, Piérre stretched a little bit before jumping once and twice to test his reflexes. He had not been too great at dodging a lot of the spells that had come at him from his previous Hufflepuff opponents; either it was bad luck or it was just because he had failed to evade because he was bad at it... Piérre was willing to bet it was the former, but he didn't really have a big observational pool to select from, so he couldn't really come to many confident conclusions until he tried dodging more things. A smile to Eve. "I know we've got this one in the bag. You certainly got a better teacher than I ever have... I've been trying to stumble through this as the older person in most of my duels so far!" He laughed a bit, recalling that his previous partners had indeed been 3rd years and that the oldest fellow partner that he had had as of yet was Evelynn herself, a relative Greenhorn to the dueling piste.
However, the two of them had had quite an amazing year, and Piérre was more than sure that with the experiences that they'd each had so far they would blow this match out of the water. "Let's win this bread!" He cheered her on, bouncing once more and then angling his leaf-overgrown wand towards his opponents. "No hard feelings, right? Let's give them a show they won't soon forget!"Doing as Strategized

Plot Hook—Evelynn has wandmaker [Wampus Hair]. You may choose—if you would like to and are interested in additional interaction options—for your character to accidentally share a random thought, phrase or memory telepathically ONCE during this thread. If you do, tag me and make it clear in your post. I will reach out to follow up with these as plot hooks for future RP with you, in addition to having Evelynn react to it in some fashion in the immediate moment. While Marchonné traipsed with that certain aloof air that always seemed to cling about him, the same could not quite be said of Evelynn. Where he smiled and conversed amiably, the lioness looked onward with a purse to her lips, a fine line of cautious deliberation etched between her brows. It could not be said that she was fearful of the match, but neither was she particularly enthusiastic. Thus far, her debut into the dueling scene had been lackluster to say the least. Her performance hadn't exactly been awful, granted. Save for a couple embarrassing moments, her previous matches had been lost with very narrow margins and she had remained standing in near perfect health in both cases.
Still, given that she had always considered herself to be an accomplished and competent caster, the experiences had been more than a little humbling. They harkened to that day against the hag slug. Never before had she felt quite so helpless. So utterly outclassed and as though she faced a wall that simply could not be scaled no matter her efforts. Try as she might to put off such negativity, there were times she questioned whether her pride would have been better served had she maintained her position on the Gryffindor Quidditch team... Which was, of course, when she would remind herself exactly why she had made the transition. It was that acknowledgement of her combative deficits had been the precise push she'd needed to seek improvement through practical exposure.
"Don't be overconfident.." A poorly veiled look of disapproval crossed her features as she looked sidelong towards her partner. On the one hand, his assurance of their victory could be beneficial to elevate morale and prevent a self-imposed defeat. There was little worse than a loss due to loss of will rather than skill. Still, arrogance was hardly helpful either. Nor was it charming. "Stavrou is a more fearsome opponent than even Jones," Evelynn stated quietly without a shred of doubt, tongue tucking the leaf in her mouth into the pocket of her cheek to facilitate speech more clearly. "You would do well to remain vigilant and keen of thought."
And then there was the other one. She almost hadn't recognized him at first, nor could she recall the last time she'd even really seen him. The call of summons, however, had vanquished any doubt. He was the boy from the library a couple years back. He'd been as sharp of mind then as any might expect of an Eagle, and only time would demonstrate whether his casting ability had kept pace. Lids narrowed slightly even as her head tilted, her unblinking gaze sliding slowly over the boy as she came to a stand at her starting position. Fatigue may have settled in the darkened pigment beneath her eyes, but they had lost none of the edge of their sharp appraisal.
A chill silence and statuesque stillness settled over the ex-prefect's figure as she waited for the call to start, even as her partner bounced with uncontainable energy just nearby. His figure sported vibrant colours and an airy outfit scuffed and dirtied with the evidence of his adventures; whereas hers had been robed in floor length black dress wrap, pressed and pristine. Fire danced in his gaze. Her were void of light. His expression, smiling. Hers, a mask. If there was one thing that could be said for certain, it was that there was hardly a duelling team more dynamically opposed in personality than Evelynn and Piérre. She only hoped that difference would amount to a balancing of strengths.

It was not without a good measure of uneasiness that Cassius took his place amongst his fellow duellists. New to the team and with a year removed from his studies, he looked on with envy at familiar faces seated around the room. Behind many of those faces were students he had been sorted with, now a year more advanced than him. An additional year of knowledge and mastery that could be used against him. The boy scowled, an expression that did not flatter his youthful features. He did not blame his classmates for his predicament. After all, it was not their fault. He resented the school for putting him in this situation and at a disadvantage against those who should be his equal, at least on paper.
Resentment, however, did have its uses. In emotion there is power. Power to aid as much to harm. Controlled it was a boon. Uncontrolled, a liability. In this situation, Cassius’ resentment helped him overcome the nerves he felt for what would be his first official duel at Hogwarts. Channeling that emotion to block out any distractions, he concentrated on remembering his spells, their wand movements, and dueling tactics described in a handful of old tomes he found in the library.
“...and Cassius Eden to the stage.”
The third year Ravenclaw blinked when his name was called, abruptly pulled out of his contemplative daze. He stepped up to the stage with steady legs and took his place beside his designated partner for this duel. He relaxed somewhat when he realized it was his house prefect that he would be dueling beside, a woman he looked up to with a good measure of respect. Cassius offered her a reassuring nod and readied his wand.
Across from them stood two lions. One he recognized as a girl he had spent some time in the library with. The other he had known only by face until the Slytherin announced his name. Was it French or Italian? A disadvantage for him in either case. Both were students he had come to Hogwarts with four years prior and both now stood a year advanced; but, it was no matter, he relished a challenge and would give them and the crowd one hell of a show.

Taking the stage at the moderator's beckoning, a roll of her dominant shoulder eased those troublesome knots. Gryffindor... again? Bummer. She had hoped to learn from Hufflepuff's apparent change in strategy--for the first time in, well, forever, the house of loyalty wasn't dead last. It struck her curiosity, but so had the fresh faces appearing opposite the piste. Decipio and Marchonné. The former shared newspaper and prefect experience, and how could Phaedra ever forget that favour concerning her cousin? Despite being the oldest, she supposed the moral about underestimating the youth could also be said for her ally at her side. Regarding Eden with a reassured acknowledgment, Phaedra too took a readied stance.Doing as strategized (x)

Cassius Eden vs Evelynn Decipio

Auto-Fail Chance (20): [d20: 3] → no auto-fail (Evelynn's Wandmaker)

Evasion Check: [d20: 1] + 15 = 16
14 < 16 → Miss
The duel began in a flurry of spells, though it was one less than expected. And not because someone had opted not to cast--Pierre had expected just as much as any of them to send a curse hurtling across the stage, petrification meant for Phaedra, but instead his wand did little more than fizzle. That was a rough start to a duel, Bridget would know as someone who'd backfired right off the bat.
The youngest player in this match, Cassius, sent his charm at Evelynn, and it would have been a proper nuisance had it hit, but Evelynn--credit to her years in Quidditch, quite possibly--managed to slip away, even if it was a relatively clumsy dodge.
She, in turn, set Cassius on fire. Which was very fun for Cassius. They weren't the brightest flames Bridget had ever seen, but they were clinging greedily to his clothes, so that was going to suck for him.
And as for Phaedra, the objectively scariest person here, she was conjuring a nasty curse for both of the Gryffindors, promises of swollen eyes sailing at Evelynn and Pierre. Evelynn dodged, Pierre did not. It wasn't fire, but where it didn't hurt as much that was going to be an absolute pain in the difficult to see, decidedly uncomfortable sort of way.

"Opportunities multiply as they are seized."~ Sun TzuPiérre liked to think of himself as an evasive kid, but his recent outings in the dueling world certainly did not prove such in the slightest. Not only did his yew wand only offer little more than a cough when he had requested the spell of "Petrificus Totalus!" to be aimed towards the older student (the obvious risk in this situation, he knew), but he was then subsequently shocked when that same older student managed to twin her spell and barely clip him like a young child shooting the wings of a bird in flight.
Almost immediately, he felt the effects of the spell as a severe itching and burning registered around the edges of his eyes. With a small shriek, the kid staggered blindly backwards as his hands flew to his face, wand clutched in one fist as both hands began to scratch and obsess over the pain that was simply in his head. Piérre's eyes were delicate; they were very, very keen and very, very vulnerable to damages. Sight was one of the primary ways that he could take in the world around him, was one of the ways he could see the countless beautiful things that the world had to offer. With that primary sense deprived of him, Piérre was frantic and frightened. Throwing his arms around him to try and use his second favored sense to determine where he was, the kid had squeezed his eyes shut, trying to force out as many tears as he could as the pink-eye like affliction continued to run its course. Another flash of fire, and Piérre yelped again, pain rippling through his mind just as much as it tingled through his entire body.
This was... awful! Who let this spell be legal?! Why couldn't he use the snake summoning charm, but someone could pull this kind of sadistic spell in a totally legal duel?!
Still... he had to stay calm... he had to keep his wits around him. "E-Eve, I can't see." His voice shivered as he spoke, an almost scary statement compared to how he had been acting just moment prior. "Please tell me that you can." His hands were both shaking just as much as his voice, eyes still tightly shut as the disgusting and unpleasant sensations continued.
Well, this was not how he had planned on it going, but he hadn't really been surprised when he had heard that he was faced up against a much more educated duelist older than both him and his partner. He was, frankly, ready for a beating... but he wouldn't make it easy if he could help it. In fact, if he could play his cards right, maybe he could turn it around.
Like a lost butterfly or a tiny eccentric bird, Piérre's empty right hand weaved the air, trying to find something stable to hold onto. Evelynn preferably, but really any part of the stage that would help him to orient himself towards his opponents would suffice. Another feeling of a red-hot poker stabbing their ways through his eye sockets. Piérre grit his teeth. "Can you help me face them? I'm still fighting; they couldn't keep me down even if they killed me." He promised confidently, trying to force a smile on his face. He had to keep the cheer going; that morale boost was so essential... so, so very precious.Doing as Strategized

They had established their plan of attack earlier and so she carried her part through. A streak of light darted forward from he wand at the call for fire, catching hold of the gown of her intended like a spark before bursting into flame. It made her wince internally, knowing the pain that lick would incite, but there were few other spells quite so effective.
It left her open to attach, however, and she barely had a chance to avoid getting hit herself. An arc of her back allowed her to narrowly dodge the return fire and she had to spin with the momentum to dance out of the way of the second line directed from their senior on the stage. Already, her heart hammered with that spike of adrenaline that only combat could bring, sound and sight narrowing its focus to the duelling boundaries and gradually fading the audience from focus. Pierre's call to assistance drew her attention, however, and she saw that he had not been quite so fortunate. Nor was Stavrou incapacitated.
"I am well," Evelynn replied, clicking her tongue while keeping both eyes forward. "Although it seems the same cannot be said of you. Ahead. To your ten and one." Part of her wanted to scold him for allowing himself to be caught off guard, but she knew how little that would help. If she had to be his eyes until they could focus on their own, so be it.

Adrenaline quickly overpowered whatever hesitation and doubt was in Cassius' mind as the initial exchange of spells took place. Alongside his Ravenclaw classmate, the third year spoke the desired incantation and directed his wand movement in Evelynn's direction. He was quick but she was quicker as he felt the impact of her spell on his person with a flash of flames.
The flames, indeed, did suck. Freshly laundered robes were a ripe medium for the fire-making spell his one-time acquaintance had cast at him. The flames on his sleeve were quick becoming a nuisance and he winced at the pain; but, a scion of House Eden would not be so easily bested. He was still standing and he intended to see that it was two Ravenclaws still standing at the end, victorious and resplendent in blue.

Spells flew to Phaedra’s disapproving scrunching of the mouth. Pierre’s attempt to incapacitate her was just that—an attempt, and yet it served as a powerful motivation for vengeance. Given her physical frailness and record experience victimized by binding curses, at the very utterance of Petrificus Totalus from his lips, Phaedra swiftly threw her wielding arm underhand to steal his vision. She’d nearly forgotten Cassius at her side, lit with a small flame. Surely, he could handle it himself?Doing as strategized (x)
