Beatrice was nervous. If her constant arm swinging, or lip biting didn't say so, then maybe just the outright pacing. This was a stupid idea. She shouldn't have asked June. The Flying Professor might be able to help. aAll these thoughts and more swirled in her head as she waited for June Selwyn to appear at the Outdoor Broom Racing Area.
Bea hadn't fared well in her first real flying experience outside of class, June Selwyn's unofficial broom race. She knew that. Even a toddler would know that. Truth be told, she'd hated the entire experience of racing. Except for hanging out with her best friend Monica. It was only because Monica had asked her to join her team, that Bea had even said yes in the first place. Bea hated flying. Well, maybe that was a strong word, disliked it more than enough to qualify her to never be on one of the blasted things if she couldn't help it, was much for accurate. She much preferred to be on the ground slinging spells. not 10 feet in the air, speeding along for your life on some rickety broomstick trying to duck snowballs, branches and spells! Seriously, there were more ways to die in those races then anywhere else in Bea's opinion!
Because of the whole blasted affair last month, Bea had asked June, the organiser and from what she had later found out, a broom racing captain, to help her. Bea had asked her to come down to the Broom Racing Area on a Saturday to help her learn more about flying. Beatrice knew she could've asked one of her own house captains, but honestly, she cringed every time she thought about it. Hunter was on the broom racing team and there was no doubt he'd hear about her broom struggles and use it against her. She wanted to learn without his influence near her. Her Shooting Star broom in hand, she waited for June.

[quote]June still didn't entirely understand why she of all people was selected to be the new co-captain for the Slytherin racing team. After all, there were surely plenty of people who had far more experience than she did. And yet, here she was, expected to help lead her team to victory.
And that was obviously going swimmingly.
Beatrice Langstreth seemed nice enough. She seemed to get on well enough with Monica, which was surely a testament of good character, right? And though June was impressed at how well the Ravenclaw had done for a novice, it was abundantly clear that she was more than uncomfortable with the whole "flying" affair. June was almost uncomfortable watching her, the poor girl.
Now June was no flying expert (she had, after all, plummeted from the sky during a flying lesson of her own not even a year prior), but she had picked up plenty of strategy during her stint as a racer. So when Beatrice had asked June to help with her flying, June was confident that she'd have something to offer. And, as much as she loved her, June was certainly a better instructor than Maggie was.
June showed up to the club area, Silver Arrow slung over her shoulder, finding a very obviously stressed Beatrice waiting for her. "Afternoon, Beatrice!" June called out with a friendly wave as she approached.
"Had a good weekend so far?" June took off her broom and set it on the ground next to Beatrice's. "That's a Shooting Star, yes? Seems like you've taken quite good care of it."
The Slytherin looked around, ensuring the coast was clear before any flying actually occurred. If flying training is what Beatrice wanted, it was flying training she would get. "Right then, let's hop to it. Would you mind flying a quick lap, just around me? No need to go fast or high or anything, it'd just be helpful for me to see a bit of flying up close."

Beatrice spun around at the sound of June's voice, arms mid-air through a swing. She'd needed to move, her nerves getting the best of her. She was chipper, much chipper than Beatrice was. Her stomach was in knots about the entire experience, and she again questioned herself on why she had even asked June for this practice.
Bea muttered a "Hello," and replied with an answering wave. It definitely wasn't as chipper as June's wave. She chewed her bottom lip, and snagged a look down at her broom. It sat on the ground, staring up at her mocking her. Telling her she would suck at this. There was a reason she was a duellist. The solid ground called to her. She wanted to back out, call this off, but her pride was too much. She sighed, trying to let out all the nerves flying around on the inside. She nodded at June's question, a slight waver entering her voice. "Yeah, it is." Her head ducked slightly at the praise. "Thanks. I could probably still use some tips though... Is that a Silver Arrow?"
At June's instruction Bea grimaced. Giving the instruction for her broom to come up to her, she mounted the broom, took a deep breath to clear her head and set off, zipping around the track, if not a little shakily. The wind blew in her face, flinging red hair out of the braid she'd tied it in for todays flight. Gritting her teeth, she maneuvered herself, flying around the track, just praying she wouldn't crash. At least this time, spells weren't flying every which way at her. She really needed more practice outside of class...

[quote]Small talk and chit-chat was always par for the course, it seemed. June nodded, leaning on her broom. "You'd be right! Good for racing, not so good for learning." Memories of Maggie Hawkins and the hospital wing made June wince. "I thought I'd bring it just in case."
Beatrice was very clearly nervous even before touching her broom. June watched as Beatrice took a lap, observing her form and her technique. She wasn't a terrible flyer, honestly, but her nervousness resulted in a tight grip which resulted in turns that were much, much too sharp, which probably jostled her around and thus made her more nervous. Once Beatrice began flying back in June's direction, she'd offer light applause. "Not bad, Langstreth!" June suddenly felt a well of pressure building up inside of her, the pressure one feels when someone expects you to be able to help. Come on, Selwyn, if you've been able to help Fin with his spellcasting, you can do this just fine. June took her self-affirmation and straightened up, choosing to not linger and remind herself just how... "successful" those tutoring sessions had been.
"Well, you've got the basics down fairly well, you must have paid pretty good attention during Professor Stube's lectures last year." If there was one thing June wanted to help Beatrice within this session, it was her confidence. And with the girl practically vibrating with nerves, step one was to get her more at ease in general. "I'm confident I can help you but, if you don't mind my asking first, what prompted you to ask me to help you with flying? It's a fun skill alright, and I'm honoured, I'm just curious."

She was buzzing. And not in a good way. The nerves were making her shaky as a leaf in Autumn, just ready and ripe for a light wind to blow it to the ground. The wind was quite still today although as Bea zipped around on her practice lap, she couldn't really tell with the air pushing all the loose strands of hair into her face.
The set of eyes focused just one her was a problem, and the attention was eating away at her. She had been nervous for sure during the broom race last month but it hadn't been this bad. Maybe because there had been others that June and spectators were able to focus on. There was just something about having a persons undivided attention that got to her. Made her squirm and wish something could hide her away.
She wanted to be good, great even, but flying was one of her downfalls. Her mother and Nan weren't big fliers, instead opting for floo or apparation, however risky the latter was. There were even times were mother insisted to do things the muggle way, just to help Beas Da out. It was the entire reason the family owned a car, however rarely used it may be. Brooms, although Bea had seen them and had once or twice ridden one with Nans careful eye on her, hadn't really thought about them until coming to Hogwarts. She certainly hadn't been on one nearly as much until school.
Coming to a land just in front of June, Bea bit her lip and squared her shoulders. Even with June's clapping, she was ready for the truth. "You can tell me how bad it was." At June's words, Bea gave a small smile towards the blond. "Yeah I paid attention alright. Enough so I didn't die on one of these things." Bea shook her head, her mouth twisting into a grimace as she looked at her broom. At June's question, Bea turned back to look at her and let her lips curve up into a now full blown smile. "Well...I couldn't ask anyone from the Ravenclaw team. Word might get out to-" she stopped herself before she let Hunters name slip out. She didn't need June to know about her battle with Hunter. Her face blushed at the near slip. The horror that would befall her if Hunter knew she couldn't fly. The advantage on their little war he would take. "Word might just get out. I'm not super close to anyone on the Ravenclaw team. And since you moderated the broom race last month and are a captain," Bea shrugged, "I thought you could help." Which was the truth. June was capable and resourceful and a broom racer. All in all, the best person outside her house to help her get her skills up.
