In comparison to the small town Ciel lived in- the Great Hall was much too loud.
There must've been a few hundred students around, all eager to see her and her peers. Standing tall was the headmaster (his face was rather frightening,) holding a very wiggly hat, and she could even spot a few teachers sat around a table. These were the adults in charge of keeping a whole bunch of 'wizards' and 'witches' in check? Oh boy.
When her mother had told her about her little 'abilities', Ciel really couldn't believe it. Well, yes, that toy chicken doesn't normally grow four sizes- but weird stuff happens all the time! In her small little town, you just shrugged off the weird stuff. At least that's what her mum always told her.
The Sorting Hat looked old. Yes, that was all Ciel could really say. It would definitely look much cooler if it were a cowboy hat- ooh! just like the one she owned at home. Did she pack that before she left? Oh golly, now her thoughts were really running rampant. This ceremony seemed like it would drag on and on and having a last name that started with the letter 'S' really didn't help her long wait.
Eventually though, as more and more of her peers were called forward, the crowd loosened, and the shouting tables got quieter. Maybe they were just as hungry as Ciel was getting. Did this ceremony really ever end-?
"Saskia, Ciel."
Golly! That was her name! Ciel pushed forward the remaining students and stumbled up the stairs. She really couldn't stand the way the whole hall was staring at her, anxious to see what house she would be in. Oh yeah. Houses. She had completely forgotten about that part of this whole school.
The headmaster placed the wiggly hat on her head, and immediately a voice entered her ears. The sensation was weird enough for her to give a small flinch.
"Oh my," it started, the voice was crispy. "you're not the brightest of the bunch, are you-?"
"Don't be mean!"
"-yes, but I sense the utmost kindness in your heart. There are so many places to choose, which one would be right for you?" The hat spoke on for another moment or so, before giving a rather dramatic pause. Talk about thriller.
"HUFFLEPUFF!"
The sudden shouts coming from a particularly yellow-clad table made Ciel think that, perhaps that was the table- her table. The soggy old hat was removed from her head, and she hastily made her way down.
A few of the older students congratulated her, and she gave a small nod. At least the hat didn't bring up the chickens. Anything but the chickens.
